How Often Should You Wash Your Sheets? The Medically Informed Answer

For most adults, wash your sheets and pillowcases once a week. Every two weeks can be a reasonable compromise for someone who sleeps alone, does not sweat much, has no pets in the bed, and has no relevant allergies or skin conditions. Wash more often—sometimes every few days—when bedding is exposed to heavy sweat, pets, illness, vomit, diarrhea, significant body fluids, or dust-mite allergens.

There is no single medical rule that dictates the exact laundry calendar for every household. Weekly is the strongest all-purpose default; the right interval depends on what accumulates in your bed and how your skin, lungs, and household respond to it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The short answer: wash sheets once a week

During sleep, bedding collects sweat, body oils, shed skin cells, saliva, skin-care and hair-care products, outdoor dirt, allergens, and—if pets share the bed—hair and dander. Washing removes that buildup and helps keep bedding comfortable and dry.

Weekly washing is also the schedule most relevant to people trying to reduce exposure to dust-mite allergens. Mayo Clinic recommends washing bedding weekly, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences gives similar advice for dust-mite control.

That does not mean that sleeping on sheets for eight or 14 days automatically makes a healthy person ill. Cleveland Clinic describes weekly washing as the medical recommendation while also acknowledging that changing sheets every one to two weeks may be reasonable for some people. The most useful way to reconcile that guidance is:

  • Weekly: the best general default for most people.
  • Every two weeks: potentially reasonable for a low-exposure sleeper with little sweating, no pets in bed, and no relevant allergy or skin concerns.
  • Every few days: appropriate to consider when sheets become damp, sticky, odorous, visibly soiled, heavily exposed to pet dander, or contaminated by illness or body fluids.

In other words, “weekly” is a practical baseline—not a cleanliness test or a universal clinical threshold. Cleveland Clinic’s bedding guidance and the household-care recommendations summarized by Real Simple both support adjusting the routine to the sleeper and the bed.

Your ideal schedule depends on five factors

Use the weekly default, then move the schedule earlier when one or more of these factors applies.

  1. How much you sweat: Night sweats, hot weather, heavy exercise, or a humid bedroom can leave fabric damp and increase odor and discomfort.
  2. Whether pets sleep in the bed: Pets add hair, dander, outdoor dirt, and possible allergens.
  3. Whether you have allergies or asthma: Dust-mite allergen control is more important when it triggers symptoms.
  4. Whether you have eczema, sensitive skin, oily skin, or acne: Sweat, product residue, fragrance, and rough or poorly rinsed fabric can irritate some people.
  5. Whether someone has been sick or the bedding is contaminated: Vomit, diarrhea, wound drainage, incontinence, and some infestations call for immediate or disease-specific laundering—not the ordinary weekly routine.

How often to wash every part of your bedding

“Sheets” can mean several different items. A fitted sheet covers the mattress; a flat or top sheet lies between the sleeper and the blanket; pillowcases cover the pillows; and a duvet cover encloses a duvet or comforter insert. A comforter or duvet insert, mattress protector, pillow insert, bedspread, and mattress each have different cleaning needs.

The intervals below are practical starting points, not universal medical mandates. Always let the care label, filling, construction, and actual exposure control the wash method.

Item Practical starting schedule Wash sooner when
Fitted and flat sheets Weekly; every two weeks may be reasonable for a low-exposure sleeper There is heavy sweating, pet exposure, illness, visible soil, or a dust-mite allergy
Pillowcases Weekly with the sheets There is oily skin, heavy hair or skin-product use, frequent sweating, drooling, or acne-prone skin; every two to four days is a reasonable trial
Duvet cover Every one to two weeks if it directly touches the sleeper; about monthly when protected by a top sheet and lightly used Pets sleep on it, someone is ill, there is heavy sweating, or no top sheet is used
Comforter or duvet insert Every two to three months, or according to its care label It touches bare skin regularly, becomes soiled, is exposed to pets, or is used during illness
Mattress pad or protector Every three to four months, or according to its care label There are spills, heavy sweating, incontinence, illness, or visible soil
Washable pillow insert Every four to six months, or according to the manufacturer’s instructions It has sweat, drool, stains, odor, or illness-related contamination
Mattress Spot-clean spills and soil as needed; occasional surface cleaning is optional There is a spill, mold concern, infestation, or visible contamination

These ranges reflect the practical housekeeping guidance summarized by Real Simple and the broader ranges discussed by the Sleep Foundation. They are not evidence that every duvet insert, mattress pad, or pillow must be washed on a precise calendar date.

Do pillowcases need to be washed more often than sheets?

Not necessarily for everyone, but pillowcases deserve priority because they stay against the face, scalp, and hair for hours. They collect facial oil, saliva, sweat, hair products, skin-care products, and shed skin cells.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical sleeper, changing pillowcases weekly with the rest of the bedding is reasonable. If you have oily skin, use leave-in hair products, sweat heavily, drool, or tend to develop breakouts, try changing the pillowcase every two to four days and see whether it improves comfort or reduces product residue on the fabric.

That is a practical experiment—not a proven acne treatment. Cleveland Clinic recommends regularly cleaning items that contact the face, but a 2023 dermatology letter reported that its literature search found no supporting evidence that weekly sheet changes prevent acne. A clean pillowcase may reduce exposure to oil and product residue, but it should not replace an evidence-based acne routine or treatment from a clinician.

If changing the entire bed is difficult, prioritize the pillowcases and fitted sheet first. That is a useful household shortcut, not a formal medical protocol. Do not treat acne as proof that your bedding is dirty or that you need to launder it multiple times a day.

What dirty sheets can—and cannot—do to your health

Supported concerns: allergens, irritation, odor, and discomfort

Sheets can become damp, sticky, odorous, or irritating before they are visibly stained. Regular washing removes sweat, oils, skin cells, dirt, outdoor allergens, pet dander, and product residue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dust mites are a particularly important consideration for people with allergies or allergic asthma. They feed on shed skin and commonly live in mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets, and curtains. Their bodies and fecal particles are primarily an allergen concern; finding dust mites does not mean the home is dirty, and they are not the same as biting pests. See guidance from NIEHS and the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Qualified concerns: eczema and sensitive skin

Sweat, detergent residue, fragrance, dyes, rough fabric, heat, and individual allergens can aggravate eczema or sensitive skin. Dirty sheets are not usually the underlying cause of eczema, which is multifactorial, but bedding can be one source of irritation or exposure.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends fragrance-free, dye-free detergent for children with eczema and advises hot-washing bedding where the fabric and care label permit. “Fragrance-free” is preferable to merely “unscented”: unscented products may still contain masking fragrances. Use the correct amount of detergent, rinse thoroughly, and avoid strongly scented beads, fabric softeners, or dryer additives if they trigger symptoms.

What not to overstate: infection, acne, and bed bugs

Ordinary unwashed sheets are not routinely a serious infection hazard for healthy households. Even in healthcare settings, the CDC says reports of disease transmission through laundry are rare when routine control measures are followed. Clean bedding improves hygiene and comfort, but it does not need to be sterile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Acne is not simply caused by dirty sheets, and frequent laundering has not been established as an acne-prevention treatment. Similarly, bed bugs are not caused by dirty bedding. They are attracted to warmth, blood, and carbon dioxide—not dirt. If you see live bugs, shed skins, fecal spots, or unexplained blood spots, investigate for an infestation rather than assuming that more frequent sheet washing will solve it. Consult the EPA’s bed-bug myth guidance and the CDC’s bed-bug information.

Does showering before bed let you wash sheets less often?

An evening shower can reduce the dirt, pollen, sunscreen, and other material transferred to bedding. It does not eliminate overnight sweating, body oil, shed skin, saliva, or hair and skin products.

Therefore, showering is one factor in the decision, not a reason to abandon the weekly default. If your sheets remain dry, comfortable, and odor-free and you have no allergy or skin concerns, you may be comfortable extending the interval toward two weeks. If they become damp or sticky, wash them sooner regardless of when you shower.

What changes if pets sleep in the bed?

A pet-sharing the bed adds hair, dander, outdoor dirt, and possible allergens to fabric that already collects human sweat and skin cells. For a heavily used shared bed, washing sheets every three to four days is a reasonable starting point, particularly when someone has allergies or asthma.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More frequent washing is not the only—and may not be the most direct—allergen-control measure. If pet dander triggers symptoms, keeping the animal out of the bedroom reduces exposure more directly than simply laundering sheets more often. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology includes bedroom and pet-exposure reduction among allergy-control measures.

Wash pet bedding according to its care label and clean accidents immediately. A mattress protector can reduce transfer into the mattress, but it does not keep the fitted sheet clean.

What changes for night sweats, hot weather, or a humid room?

There is no scientifically established rule that summer automatically means a certain number of extra washes. Instead, use the condition of the bedding as your guide:

Warm, humid conditions can support dust-mite growth and also make people sweat more. If the room is humid and you have dust-mite allergy or asthma, weekly washing becomes more important; it still will not remove mites from the mattress and pillow by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have dust-mite allergies or allergic asthma

Washing weekly is only one part of bedroom allergen control. A more complete plan includes:

  • Wash sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and bedcovers weekly.
  • Use allergen-impermeable encasements for the mattress and pillows.
  • Keep indoor relative humidity at or below about 50%.
  • Reduce dust-collecting furnishings in the bedroom where feasible.
  • Use appropriate vacuum filtration and clean the room regularly.
  • Keep pets out of the bedroom if pet dander is a trigger.

Mayo Clinic and NIEHS commonly specify washing bedding in water at least 130°F (54.4°C), with NIEHS describing approximately 130°F to 140°F (54.4°C to 60°C). But do not raise your household water heater to reach that number. The AAAAI dust-mite practice parameter warns about scalding risk and notes that cooler washing and mechanical action can still remove substantial allergen.

These recommendations concern dust-mite control, not a requirement for ordinary household hygiene. A 2008 laundry study found that washing at 60°C killed all tested mites, while 30°C and 40°C killed only a small fraction; remaining allergen levels also varied with temperature and rinsing. That is laboratory evidence about mite survival and allergen removal—not proof that every household needs a particular wash temperature for routine cleanliness.

What changes for eczema or sensitive skin?

Keep bedding clean, but focus as much on the laundry products and rinsing as on the calendar:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose fragrance-free and dye-free detergent.
  • Use the amount specified on the detergent label; more is not cleaner.
  • Consider an extra rinse if residue appears to irritate the skin.
  • Use fabrics and water temperatures permitted by the care label.
  • Avoid strongly scented fabric softeners, dryer sheets, and laundry additives if they are triggers.
  • Change bedding when sweat, body fluids, or product buildup makes it irritating, even if that is more often than weekly.

If a new rash persists, spreads, becomes painful, or does not improve after removing suspected irritants, seek medical advice rather than assuming the sheets are the cause.

When to wash bedding immediately after illness or contamination

Disease-specific situations are different from ordinary sheet washing. Follow these handling steps:

After a flu-like respiratory illness

Wash used sheets and towels with normal laundry detergent and dry them according to the fabric label. A CDC home-care guide commonly advises using a hot dryer setting when appropriate. Avoid damaging delicate items by ignoring their care instructions.

After vomiting or diarrhea

Remove contaminated linens as soon as practical. Wear disposable gloves, do not shake the laundry, and place it carefully into the washer. The CDC’s norovirus guidance recommends washing with detergent and hot water on the maximum available cycle length, then machine-drying at the highest heat setting. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the linens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For scabies

Scabies requires treatment of the affected person and appropriate contacts; laundering alone will not treat the infestation. Wash clothing, towels, and bedding used during the three days before treatment began. The CDC recommends hot washing and hot drying, or dry-cleaning. Items that cannot be treated can be sealed for several days to a week, according to the CDC’s instructions.

Change bedding immediately after significant wound drainage, incontinence, a pet accident, or another visible body-fluid contamination. Wear gloves when appropriate, avoid shaking the material, and follow medical-care or public-health instructions if the fluid may contain an infectious disease.

How to wash sheets correctly

1. Read the care label first

Temperature and cycle instructions vary by fabric, dye, elastic, stitching, and filling. Cotton often tolerates warm or hot washing, while silk, satin, bamboo, wool, and some linen products may require cold or gentle cycles. The Federal Trade Commission’s care-labeling rules explain how textile-care instructions communicate safe cleaning methods. The label on your specific item takes priority over a generic laundry recommendation.

2. Separate sheets from towels and bulky items

Wash sheets separately from towels when possible. Towels can create lint and friction, while a bulky comforter can prevent sheets from moving freely and rinsing properly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Do not overload the washer

Sheets need room to circulate through water and detergent. An overloaded drum can leave sweat, oils, and detergent residue behind. If the load is tightly packed, divide it.

4. Use the warmest safe water

For ordinary washing, choose the warmest temperature the fabric and manufacturer safely permit. Hotter is not automatically better: excessive heat can fade colors, shrink fibers, weaken elastic, and damage delicate materials. For dust-mite allergy, follow your clinician’s or allergy organization’s advice while avoiding unsafe household water-heater settings.

5. Use the right amount of detergent

Use the amount specified on the detergent label and choose fragrance-free, dye-free detergent if you have eczema or sensitive skin. Overdosing can leave a coating that irritates skin and makes sheets feel stiff or greasy. An additional rinse may help when residue is a recurring problem.

6. Dry the bedding completely

Transfer sheets promptly after washing and dry them fully according to the care label. Damp bedding can develop odor and is less hygienic than thoroughly dry bedding. Use a tumble dryer or line-dry as permitted, and do not put sheets back on the bed while they are still damp.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Keep a second set available

Two or more sheet sets make weekly washing easier. Rotation also reduces the temptation to put incompletely dried bedding back on the bed or postpone laundering because the bed has no clean replacement.

Hot water, disinfecting, and what you do not need

Routine sheet washing is primarily about removing soil, sweat, oils, allergens, and odors. It is not the same as sterilizing bedding, and most weekly loads do not require bleach, laundry disinfectant, vinegar, baking soda, or a sanitize cycle.

Use a special product or cycle only when the fabric label and the situation justify it—for example, a specific contamination event or a clinician’s instructions. Never mix cleaning products, and do not sacrifice fabric safety for an unnecessarily aggressive wash.

For dust mites, distinguish among three different goals:

  • Killing mites: strongly affected by wash temperature and drying conditions.
  • Removing allergen: affected by washing, rinsing, temperature, and mechanical action.
  • Reducing exposure: also requires encasements, humidity control, and bedroom cleaning.

That is why “hot water kills bacteria” is too broad to be useful. A temperature that affects dust mites is not automatically a guarantee against every pathogen, and a setting that is useful for contaminated laundry may damage a delicate fabric.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until sheets look dirty: sweat, oils, odor, and allergens can accumulate before stains appear.
  • Using maximum heat on every fabric: follow the care label to prevent shrinkage, fading, and fiber damage.
  • Overloading the machine: poor movement reduces cleaning and rinsing.
  • Using too much detergent: residue can irritate skin.
  • Leaving wet sheets in the washer: rewash if they develop a musty odor, then dry them completely.
  • Changing only the pillowcase when the fitted sheet is heavily soiled: this is only a partial reset.
  • Assuming a mattress protector replaces sheet washing: it protects the mattress but does not prevent soil on the sheet.
  • Treating acne as a laundry problem: a clean pillowcase may reduce residue but is not a substitute for proven acne treatment.
  • Trying to solve bed bugs with more frequent washing: inspect and treat the infestation instead.
  • Raising the water heater to 130°F: this creates a scalding hazard and is not a general dust-mite recommendation.

A simple decision guide

Situation Recommended direction
Healthy adult, sleeps alone, little sweating, no pets Wash weekly; every two weeks may be acceptable if the bed stays dry and comfortable
Two adults sharing a bed Prefer weekly; shorten the interval if either person sweats heavily or uses the bed frequently
Pet sleeps in the bed Consider every three to four days, especially with allergies or asthma
Night sweats or hot, humid bedroom Wash whenever bedding is damp, sticky, odorous, or visibly soiled—often more than weekly
Dust-mite allergy or allergic asthma Wash bedding weekly, use encasements, control humidity, and reduce bedroom allergens
Eczema or sensitive skin Wash weekly or when soiled; use fragrance-free, dye-free detergent and rinse thoroughly
Acne-prone or oily skin Weekly sheets; try changing pillowcases every few days, without treating this as an acne cure
Recent flu-like illness Wash used bedding after illness according to the care label
Vomiting or diarrhea Handle immediately with gloves and no shaking; hot-wash and high-heat-dry as directed by the CDC
Scabies Treat the person and contacts; wash bedding used during the three days before treatment
Incontinence, wound drainage, or heavy body-fluid exposure Change immediately and follow appropriate medical-care guidance
Bedbug suspicion Inspect and treat the infestation; routine sheet washing alone is not enough
Silk, satin, bamboo, wool, or specialty bedding Follow the care label even when that requires a cooler or gentler wash

Bottom line

Wash your sheets and pillowcases once a week as a dependable all-purpose routine. Every two weeks may work for a low-sweat, pet-free sleeper without allergies or skin concerns. Move to every few days when sweat, pets, product residue, allergies, or skin irritation make the bedding dirty or uncomfortable, and wash immediately after vomit, diarrhea, major body-fluid contamination, or an infestation-related exposure.

Use the warmest safe setting allowed by the care label, do not overload the washer, use appropriate detergent, and dry everything completely. For dust-mite allergy, combine weekly washing with encasements and humidity control; for acne or eczema, do not mistake laundry frequency for medical treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it unhealthy to wash sheets every two weeks?

Not necessarily for every person. Every two weeks can be a reasonable routine for someone who sleeps alone, sweats little, has no pets in the bed, and has no relevant allergy or skin condition. Weekly remains the stronger general default, especially for dust-mite allergy or allergic asthma.

Should I change my pillowcase every day if I have acne?

Usually, daily changes are not necessary. Try changing pillowcases every two to four days if oil or hair and skin products build up, but frequent laundering is not a proven acne treatment. Use an appropriate acne-care routine and consult a dermatologist if breakouts persist.

Do I need to wash sheets in 130°F water?

Some dust-mite allergy guidance recommends washing bedding at about 130°F to 140°F (54.4°C to 60°C), but do not raise your household water heater to reach that temperature because of scalding risk. Use the hottest safe machine setting allowed by the fabric and manufacturer; cooler washing and mechanical action can still remove substantial allergen.

Does a shower before bed mean I can wash my sheets less often?

A shower can reduce dirt, pollen, and products transferred to the bed, but it does not prevent overnight sweat, oil, shed skin, or saliva. Use the condition of the bedding and your allergy or skin needs—not showering alone—to decide whether to extend the interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will washing sheets get rid of bed bugs?

No. Bed bugs are not caused by dirty sheets, and routine laundering alone will not eliminate an infestation. If you find live bugs, shed skins, fecal spots, or unexplained blood spots, inspect the room and follow professional or public-health pest-control guidance.

The Bottom Line

Weekly is the best all-purpose sheet-washing schedule. Every two weeks can be reasonable for some low-exposure sleepers, while people dealing with heavy sweating, pets, allergies, sensitive skin, or illness should wash bedding more often. Follow the care label, use the warmest safe setting, and reserve disease-specific hot-wash procedures for actual contamination events.
