How Much Mulch Should You Put Over Cardboard in a Garden?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most cardboard-covered garden beds, spread about 3 inches of mulch on top of wet, overlapping cardboard. If you are smothering an existing lawn to create a new bed, use the heavier sheet-mulching approach: extension guidance commonly calls for 4 to 6 inches of total mulch. Those depths serve different purposes, so the lawn-conversion figure is not a requirement for every bed.

Use plain, non-waxed cardboard, close every gap by overlapping sheets, wet the material as you install it, and keep both cardboard and mulch clear of plant crowns and stems. Because cardboard can slow water movement, check the soil beneath the mulch after irrigation.

Choose the depth for the job

Garden situation Recommended mulch depth What the guidance is intended to do Planting timing
Cardboard over soil or an existing bed About 3 inches Cover the cardboard, conserve moisture and suppress weeds without creating an unnecessarily thick layer Usually compatible with normal bed preparation once the soil is workable and moisture is reaching it
Lawn-to-bed conversion or heavy vegetation suppression 4 to 6 inches of total mulch Provide a deeper smothering cover over the cardboard Penn State says four to six months is usually sufficient for the vegetation to die; local climate and conditions determine the actual planting date
General mulch use without cardboard 2 to 4 inches Iowa State’s general range; coarser materials belong toward the deeper end Depends on the plants and site

The practical starting point for an ordinary cardboard-covered bed comes from recommendations such as the UC Master Gardener Program of Contra Costa County’s sheet-mulching method, which uses an optional compost layer followed by at least 3 inches of mulch. Penn State’s lawn-to-garden procedure and UC Davis’s lawn-removal example both describe a 4-to-6-inch cover. Select the row that matches your objective rather than automatically using the largest number.

Why cardboard and mulch depths vary

Cardboard is a temporary sheet barrier. It blocks light from reaching weeds while it breaks down, but it also adds a layer that water and air must cross. Mulch is the protective surface layer above it. The thicker the combined barrier, the more carefully you need to manage irrigation and planting timing.

Material texture changes how a depth behaves. Large wood chips and bark pieces leave more air space than fine, dense material, so coarse mulch is generally placed toward the deeper end of the usual 2-to-4-inch range. A 3-inch layer of chunky chips does not behave exactly like 3 inches of fine, compacted material.

Purpose matters most. Covering an already-prepared bed needs enough mulch to hide and hold down the cardboard. Smothering turf requires a deeper cover and a waiting period while roots and crowns die underneath. Treating both situations as identical is the main reason gardeners either use too little for lawn removal or too much for a simple weed barrier.

Prepare the site before laying cardboard

Cut the vegetation short

Mow or cut unwanted grass and weeds as close to the ground as practical. Short vegetation lies flatter, leaves fewer air pockets and is easier to cover evenly. Remove bulky stems or woody growth that could lift the sheets and create light gaps.

Choose safe sheet material

Use plain, non-waxed corrugated cardboard. Strip off packing tape, shipping labels, plastic film and staples. Avoid glossy or slick coated sheets. These finishes do not fit the straightforward breakdown that sheet mulching depends on.

Plan around plants you are keeping

Mark existing perennials, shrubs and young trees before covering the bed. Cardboard should not cover a plant’s crown or trunk base. Cut openings large enough to leave the plant’s growing point completely clear; do not rely on mulch to protect a stem that is already buried.

Install cardboard and mulch step by step

  1. Clear and level the area. Remove large debris and cut the unwanted vegetation. You do not need to excavate healthy topsoil simply to place the barrier.
  2. Lay one or two cardboard layers. Use enough material to make a continuous sheet, but do not build an unnecessarily thick stack. Iowa State warns that excessive paper or cardboard can restrict water and air movement.
  3. Overlap every seam. Place sheet edges over one another so daylight cannot pass through joints. Stagger seams between layers when using two layers. Small uncovered strips can become easy escape routes for grass and weeds.
  4. Wet the cardboard as you work. Water helps the sheets conform to the ground and keeps wind from lifting them. Saturate each section before moving on rather than waiting until the entire area is covered.
  5. Add optional compost where appropriate. The Contra Costa County method places 1 to 2 inches of compost below the final mulch layer. Keep that layer out of direct contact with plant crowns and stems.
  6. Spread the mulch evenly. For a regular covered bed, begin near 3 inches. For a lawn-conversion sheet mulch, build the total cover to 4 to 6 inches, using bark mulch or wood chips among the suitable choices listed by Penn State.
  7. Water and inspect. Irrigate the finished surface, then move a small amount of mulch aside and feel the soil below. Adjust watering if the soil remains dry.

Keep mulch away from stems and crowns

Leave a visible, unmulched ring around every stem, trunk and crown. Piling wet organic material against plant tissue keeps that area constantly damp and can encourage decay. The same rule applies to plants set into holes cut through cardboard: the opening should expose the crown, and mulch should stop short of it.

When a bed contains established plants, use the general-bed depth rather than automatically applying the 4-to-6-inch lawn-conversion depth. Deep sheet mulching is intended to smother vegetation before planting; it is not a reason to bury the bases of plants that are already growing.

Make sure irrigation reaches the soil

Cardboard can slow water from reaching the ground. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension notes that overhead watering may need to run longer when cardboard is used as a weed barrier. A longer run time is not automatically correct for every sprinkler, so verify the result instead of relying on the clock.

A simple moisture check

  1. Water the mulched area normally.
  2. After the water has had time to move through the mulch, pull back a small patch without disturbing the whole bed.
  3. Feel the soil directly beneath the cardboard. It should be damp to the depth relevant to the planted roots, not merely wet on the mulch surface.
  4. If the soil is dry, extend the next irrigation cycle or apply water slowly enough to soak through. Recheck rather than continually increasing the mulch depth.

Water that pools for long periods, runs off the surface or leaves the soil dry beneath intact cardboard indicates a barrier or drainage problem. Thin an overly dense top layer, open blocked seams around plants and correct the watering pattern before adding anything else.

How long to wait when converting lawn

A lawn-conversion bed is not ready simply because the mulch has been spread. Penn State’s sheet-mulching guidance says four to six months is usually enough time for existing vegetation to die under the cover. UC Davis describes the same 4-to-6-inch approach in its lawn-removal example.

That interval is a planning guide, not a guaranteed calendar. Temperature, rainfall, grass species, the condition of the cardboard and the date you installed it all affect decomposition. Wait until the local planting window, then inspect by opening a small area: the original turf should be dead and the soil should accept water. If live crowns remain, extend the waiting period or address those spots before planting.

Do not assume deeper is better

Iowa State’s mulch guidance gives 2 to 4 inches as a general range and lists several risks of excess mulch: waterlogging, reduced soil oxygen, shallow roots and soil that stays too warm in winter. Thick paper or cardboard can further restrict air and water movement.

Those risks are why a 3-inch top layer is a sensible default for a typical bed. Add depth only when the purpose is the more intensive lawn-smothering method, and still keep the total cover within the cited 4-to-6-inch range. If the surface has settled, measure before adding more; do not top-dress by guesswork.

Select a mulch that suits the cover

Mulch material Where it fits the guidance Handling notes
Wood chips Suitable for sheet mulching and lawn conversion Chunkier pieces are generally suited to the deeper end of a normal mulch range; spread them evenly so cardboard seams remain covered
Bark mulch Suitable for sheet mulching and lawn conversion Use a consistent layer and keep it clear of plant bases
Other organic mulch Can be used when its texture and condition allow water to pass through Fine or compacted material should not be piled to the same depth as loose coarse chips without checking infiltration

Penn State specifically lists bark mulch and wood chips for the lawn-to-bed method. Whatever material you choose, the cardboard preparation rules still apply: plain sheets, overlapped seams, wet installation and openings around plants.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using only a single narrow strip of cardboard: Overlap sheets so no light reaches the soil through seams.
  • Leaving tape, labels or glossy coatings attached: Remove those materials before installation and use plain, non-waxed cardboard.
  • Installing dry sheets on a windy site: Wet each section as it is laid, then cover it promptly with mulch. Landscape staples may help hold cardboard in place, as Iowa State notes.
  • Putting the full lawn-conversion depth around existing plants: Cut generous openings and stop mulch short of crowns and stems.
  • Assuming a wet mulch surface proves irrigation is working: Check the soil beneath the cardboard; the barrier can leave the root zone dry.
  • Adding more material whenever weeds appear: First inspect for open seams, surviving turf crowns or poor moisture penetration. More depth is not a substitute for closing gaps or correcting irrigation.
  • Planting immediately into a fresh lawn conversion: Allow the cited four-to-six-month breakdown period where conditions require it, and follow the planting window for your climate.

A practical decision rule

Start by naming the job. If you are covering an existing garden area with cardboard, use about 3 inches of mulch and concentrate on continuous coverage and irrigation. If you are replacing lawn or suppressing dense unwanted vegetation, use the 4-to-6-inch sheet-mulching cover, then wait for the vegetation to die before planting. In either case, keep the cardboard layer sensible, protect plant bases and verify that water reaches the soil.
