How Much Does It Cost to Heat a Garage? A Practical Calculation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no reliable single monthly price for heating a garage. Your cost depends on the garage’s size and air leakage, outdoor temperature, thermostat setting, heater output and efficiency, local energy rates, and how long the heater actually runs. The most useful answer is a calculation based on your marginal utility rate and the heater’s real duty cycle—not a national “average garage bill.”

Use the method below to estimate operating cost, then compare installation expense and safety requirements. A heater that is inexpensive to run can still be the wrong choice if its installation cost is high or the garage is used only occasionally.

What determines a garage-heating bill?

Heating cost is the energy required to replace heat escaping through the garage envelope, multiplied by the price of that energy. Five factors control the result.

Heat loss through the envelope

The garage door is often the largest exposed surface. Unsealed door edges, thin or missing insulation in the walls and ceiling, leaky windows, and penetrations for wiring or plumbing let heated air escape. Lennox’s April 27, 2026 garage-heating guide specifically identifies the door, walls, ceiling, and gaps as major heat-loss locations. A leaky garage can run a heater much longer than a tighter garage of the same floor area.

Outdoor temperature and your set point

The colder it is outside—and the warmer you want the garage—the larger the indoor-outdoor temperature difference. A garage maintained at 60°F on a freezing night requires more heat than one maintained at 45°F. There is no universal dollar adjustment for climate because construction, wind exposure, and weather vary by site.

Heater output, efficiency, and fuel price

Electric heaters are rated in watts or kilowatts. Gas and propane equipment is usually rated in BTU per hour, while fuel is billed by therm, cubic foot, gallon, or another local unit. Compare the cost of useful delivered heat using your actual utility rate and the heater’s stated efficiency. A higher output does not automatically mean a higher monthly bill: an oversized unit may cycle more often, while an undersized unit may run nearly continuously.

Schedule and thermostat duty cycle

Elapsed time in the garage is not the same as heater runtime. If a thermostat reaches its set point and cycles the heater off, the duty cycle is less than 100 percent. Estimate hours per day, days per week, heating-season length, and the fraction of those hours the heater is energized.

Upfront installation

Keep operating cost separate from equipment and installation. A permanent system may require a new circuit, gas line, venting, combustion-air provisions, permits, or professional labor. No geographically representative installed-price range is established here, so obtain local quotes rather than applying a national figure.

Calculate your operating cost step by step

  1. Record the heater’s input rating. For electric equipment, convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000. For fuel-burning equipment, use the nameplate input BTU per hour and its listed efficiency.
  2. Estimate energized hours. Multiply hours per day by days used per week, then by weeks in the billing period. Apply a realistic duty cycle if a thermostat cycles the unit.
  3. Apply your marginal rate. Use the additional electricity, gas, or propane rate that appears on your bill, including variable delivery charges that rise with consumption. Do not use an average household bill.
  4. Add fixed or one-time costs separately. Include equipment, wiring, venting, permits, maintenance, and installation in a payback calculation rather than hiding them inside monthly energy use.
Input What to enter Why it matters
Heater rating kW for electric, or BTU/h input for combustion equipment Determines energy consumed while operating
Hours per day Your planned occupied or scheduled hours Sets potential runtime
Days and season Days per week and weeks or months used Converts a daily estimate to a billing period
Duty cycle 0 to 1, such as 0.60 for 60% Accounts for thermostat cycling
Marginal energy rate Your current local price per kWh, therm, gallon, or other unit Converts consumption to money
Efficiency Use the listed value for fuel-burning equipment Separates fuel input from useful heat delivered

Electric example (illustrative assumptions)

Suppose a 5-kW electric heater is scheduled for four hours a day, 30 days per month, and a thermostat produces a 60% duty cycle. Runtime is 5 × 4 × 30 × 0.60 = 360 kWh. At an illustrative marginal rate of $0.18 per kWh, the operating estimate is 360 × $0.18 = $64.80 for that month. This is a worked example, not a forecast for your utility bill. Substitute your heater’s rating, schedule, duty cycle, and rate.

Fuel-burning example method

For a gas heater, first calculate input energy: BTU per hour × runtime hours. Divide BTU by 100,000 to convert to therms, then apply the local price per therm. If the heater’s efficiency is used to compare useful heat with an electric unit, divide input energy by the stated efficiency to identify the useful-output relationship. Propane calculations use the appliance’s BTU input and the price per gallon; the appliance label and supplier’s energy-content assumption determine the conversion. Because rates and efficiency vary, a local bill and the exact model’s data plate are more reliable than a generic online number.

Electric, natural-gas, or propane: which approach fits?

Lennox’s April 27, 2026 guide describes electric radiant heaters as suitable for smaller spaces or quick warmth, natural gas as an option for larger or regularly used garages, and propane as a portable choice for part-time use. Those are general manufacturer recommendations, not a guarantee of the lowest cost. Evaluate local delivered-heat cost, installation, use frequency, portability, and code requirements together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Approach Where it can fit Cost variables Installation and safety considerations
Electric radiant or forced-air Small garages, spot heating, quick or occasional use kW rating, electricity rate, runtime, thermostat cycling May need a dedicated circuit; maintain listed clearances and keep combustibles away
Natural gas Larger or frequently occupied garages where a gas supply is available BTU input, listed efficiency, gas and delivery rates, runtime Gas piping, venting, combustion air, permits, and professional installation may be required
Propane Portable or part-time heating where cylinders or a tank are practical BTU input, delivered propane price, runtime, refill charges Follow the product listing for indoor use, ventilation, cylinder storage, clearances, and local code

Why operating cost alone can mislead

A low fuel price may not repay the cost of a gas line, vent, and installation if the garage is heated only a few weekends each winter. Conversely, an electric heater with higher energy cost may avoid major construction work and be economical over a short ownership period. Compare total cost over the years you expect to use the system, using your own schedule.

Size the heater without treating a rule of thumb as a load calculation

Lennox gives a rough sizing guideline of about 50 to 60 BTU per square foot. Applying that guideline to a 400-square-foot garage produces approximately 20,000 to 24,000 BTU. The figures are manufacturer guidance, not an engineered heat-loss calculation.

Actual sizing also depends on insulation, ceiling height, climate, exposed walls, door opening frequency, air leakage, and the temperature you want. A local HVAC professional can calculate heat loss and verify that the appliance, venting, electrical service, and controls are appropriate. Do not select a larger unit solely to compensate for an unsealed door or poorly insulated ceiling; fixing the envelope may reduce required capacity and runtime.

Reduce demand before buying a larger heater

  • Inspect the garage door. Check perimeter seals, the bottom seal, panel joints, and whether insulation is continuous. A damaged seal can admit cold air even when the door appears closed.
  • Seal penetrations. Address gaps around wiring, pipes, windows, and framing with materials suitable for the location and local fire rules.
  • Insulate walls and ceiling. Missing or compressed insulation increases heat loss and can make a heater run continuously.
  • Control door-opening losses. Limit unnecessary opening time and consider a separate work area if the whole garage does not need to be heated.
  • Maintain the heater. Clean filters, inlets, reflectors, and burner areas as the manufacturer directs. Restricted airflow can reduce performance and create a safety problem.

These measures do not guarantee a particular percentage savings; their effect depends on the original condition, weather, and how the garage is used.

Garage-heater safety and code requirements

The U.S. Fire Administration warns: “Garage fires tend to spread farther and cause more injuries and dollar loss than fires that start in all other areas of the home.” Its garage and basement guidance, last reviewed April 1, 2023, advises keeping burnable materials away from appliances and storing oil, gasoline, paints, propane, and varnishes in a shed away from the home.

Common estimating mistakes and how to correct them

Calling a calculator result “typical”

Garage Heat Lab’s calculator page, updated October 1, 2026, presents scenario estimates based on heater output, energy-price references, hours, days, season length, and duty cycle. It also notes that weather, insulation, thermostat settings, ventilation, and local utility rates change the result. Treat every displayed number as an estimate with its assumptions shown—not as a national average.

Using whole-house energy statistics

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Winter Fuels Outlook, released March 10, 2026, reports national household seasonal expenditure estimates for November through March. Those figures cover whole-house household fuel use and cannot be converted into a garage-heating bill without garage-specific assumptions.

Assuming nameplate hours equal energized hours

Multiply scheduled hours by the thermostat duty cycle. If the garage loses heat rapidly, the duty cycle may approach 100%; if it is well sealed and used intermittently, it may be much lower.

Ignoring installation economics

Record equipment, wiring, gas work, venting, permits, and labor as separate line items. A system with lower energy cost may have a longer payback than a simple electric unit.

A decision checklist for your garage

  1. Measure floor area, ceiling height, door size, windows, and exposed walls.
  2. Inspect and improve seals and insulation before final heater sizing.
  3. Choose a target temperature and write down hours per day, days per week, and season length.
  4. Record the heater’s input rating, listed efficiency, and installation requirements.
  5. Use your marginal local energy rate and a realistic duty cycle in the calculation.
  6. Get installation quotes where electrical, gas, venting, permits, or combustion-air work is involved.
  7. Confirm clearances, fuel storage, ventilation, listing, and code compliance before operating the equipment.
