Short answer: In the United States, a home elevator usually starts in the tens of thousands of dollars, a sauna in the low thousands, and a steam shower in the mid-thousands. The advertised starting price is not an all-in project budget: an elevator may exclude the hoistway, a sauna may need new electrical and moisture-control work, and a steam-generator kit is only one component of a steam-ready shower.
The figures below are planning estimates from manufacturer guidance and national cost guides published in June and July 2026. Your final price depends on the house, location, finishes, structural work, local labor, permits and inspections. Ask for a written scope that separates every one of those items before comparing bids.

At-a-glance U.S. cost comparison
| Project | Published planning figure | What the figure does and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Two-stop home elevator | $30,000–$40,000 starting price for a standard cab and manual gate; premium configurations can reach $75,000 or more | Savaria’s manufacturer guidance includes local elevator installation but excludes the general contractor’s hoistway construction. It is not an independent national survey. |
| Home sauna | $2,500–$7,000 typical; $3,100 average in HomeAdvisor’s guide; custom work can exceed $10,000 | Angi and HomeAdvisor cost-guide estimates. Electrical, plumbing, ventilation, moisture control, site work and indoor renovations can be additional. |
| Prefabricated steam shower | $2,800–$7,100 professionally installed; $4,300 average; custom designs can reach $25,000 | Angi and HomeAdvisor guide figures. Confirm whether the example includes the enclosure, waterproofing, generator, controls, power, plumbing, permits and finish work. |
These projects are not substitutes. An elevator addresses movement between floors; a sauna creates a heated room; a steam shower combines a sealed wet area with a steam-generation system. Their cost drivers and construction risks are different.
Why an advertised starting price is not your project total
Construction quotes often combine a product price with only the work needed to install that product. Existing homes may require framing, demolition, finish repairs, new circuits, plumbing changes, waterproofing, ventilation or engineering before the equipment can be used safely.

Require each bidder to show separate line items for:
- Equipment, controls, accessories and finish options
- Delivery, hoisting and disposal
- Installation labor
- Structural framing, floor openings, shaft or enclosure construction
- Electrical service, circuits, disconnects and panel upgrades
- Water supply, drains and steam piping
- Waterproofing, vapor-resistant construction, tile and finish repairs
- Ventilation, humidity control and drying provisions
- Design, permits, inspections and any required engineering
Local licensing and inspection rules vary. A low equipment-only number is not comparable with a bid that includes construction and code work.
Home elevator cost and scope
What the $30,000–$40,000 starting figure covers
Savaria’s U.S. FAQ places a standard two-stop home elevator with a standard cab and manual gate at approximately $30,000–$40,000 to start. The manufacturer also describes a typical home elevator as starting at about $30,000 including local installation. Those figures exclude the general contractor’s hoistway construction, so they should be treated as elevator-equipment and elevator-installation guidance rather than a complete room-to-room renovation price.

Ask whether a proposal is for two stops only, and identify every landing the equipment must serve.
Space and structural planning
A retrofit may need approximately 16–25 square feet per level for a hoistway, according to Savaria. One through-floor Luma lift configuration uses an approximate 38-by-47-inch floor cut-out; the exact opening depends on the model and site. A contractor must verify clearances, framing, landing access and the path for delivering equipment before ordering.
Hoistway construction can involve floor and ceiling openings, framing, shaft walls, landing doors, finish repairs and sometimes changes to nearby mechanical or electrical systems. Because those items are outside the quoted elevator starting figure, have the general contractor price them as a separate package.

Installation and safety
Savaria states that a home elevator is not a do-it-yourself project. Its guidance identifies trained elevator mechanics as installers and notes that local licensing requirements differ. Use an authorized local dealer or another qualified elevator professional for the equipment, then coordinate the hoistway and finish work with a licensed general contractor.

Home sauna cost and the choices that move it
Typical U.S. range
Angi’s July 8, 2026 U.S. guide reports that most home saunas cost $2,500–$7,000, while custom builds may exceed $10,000. HomeAdvisor’s June 19, 2026 guide reports the same typical range and a $3,100 average. These are cost-guide estimates, not guaranteed prices for a particular room or region.
Prefabricated versus custom
A prefabricated cabin or kit generally offers a defined interior, heater location and assembly method. It can be a practical choice when the room, electrical capacity and ventilation strategy already suit the product. Check the manufacturer’s capacity, indoor or outdoor rating, required circuit, shipping terms and whether setup is included; a product listing alone does not establish an installed project price.
A custom sauna is built around the room and can include unusual dimensions, built-in benches, specialty wood, glass, lighting or a conversion of an existing space. The additional carpentry and finish work are why custom projects can exceed $10,000.

Angi says indoor saunas can cost around $3,000 more than outdoor saunas because an indoor installation may require renovations to manage moisture and humidity. That is a broad guide estimate, not a fixed surcharge. Indoor work may involve wall and ceiling protection, ventilation, adjacent-room repairs and coordination with an existing bathroom or finished interior.

- 【Convenient Design】There are pockets inside the sauna room that can be used to store mobile phones and other small items. The zippered transparent window allows you to stick your head out for air at any time. The double pull zipper allows you to unzip and exit the steam room.
- 【2 Steamer】2 high-power steamers can quickly generate steam and shorten the preheating time. The two steamers also keep the temperature in the sauna room high. X-Vcak steamer has dry burning and leakage functions, allowing you to enjoy the sauna with more peace of mind.
- 【Portable & Time-Saving】 You can move the sauna tent to your room, living room, bathroom or other places for use. If you need to take the steam tent to a further location, it can also be folded for easy portability. With this portable sauna, you can steam at home anytime and anywhere, saving time in going to the steam room.
Outdoor placement can avoid some indoor renovation, but it still requires a suitable base, weather protection, delivery access and an electrical route. Price those site conditions rather than assuming an outdoor cabin is plug-and-play.
Electrical, plumbing and moisture allowances
Angi identifies electrical work, plumbing, labor and possible panel requirements as additional budget considerations. Its guide gives broad allowances of $300–$800 for electrical work and $350–$1,750 for plumbing. Those figures are planning ranges, not universal allowances; distance from the panel, service capacity, local labor and the sauna design can change them substantially.
Sauna projects also need a plan for ventilation and moisture. Confirm where heated, humid air goes, how surrounding finishes are protected and how the room will dry after use. If the room is part of a bathroom or basement, include waterproofing and any required repairs in the same scope as the sauna.

For comparison only, SaunaCentral’s 2026 guide gives these United Kingdom all-in examples. They are in pounds, apply to UK projects and should not be combined with the U.S. dollar figures:
| UK project example | Published all-in range |
|---|---|
| Freestanding cabin in an existing room | £3,000–£7,500 |
| Built-in sauna during a bathroom refit | £6,000–£15,000 |
| Sauna in an already waterproofed basement | £5,000–£12,000 |
| Garage conversion including the sauna | £15,000–£35,000 |
Steam shower cost: generator versus complete installation
Published installation range
Angi’s July 10, 2026 U.S. guide reports $2,800–$7,100 for professional installation of a prefabricated steam-shower unit, with a $4,300 average. HomeAdvisor’s June 19, 2026 guide reports the same range and average. Both guides say shower size and tile or material selection affect price. Custom designs can reach $25,000.
Confirm what each guide example includes. A quote for a prefabricated unit may not cover demolition, a new shower base, tile, waterproofing, electrical service, plumbing changes, ventilation or repairs outside the stall.

A generator kit is not a steam shower
A steam generator and control are only part of a finished system. Sauna & Steam Center’s installation guidance says a steam-ready project needs:
- A fully enclosed shower sized for the equipment
- An appropriately sized generator
- Dedicated electrical power
- A water supply and steam piping
- Controls located according to the manufacturer’s instructions
- Service access so the generator can be reached later
- Vapor-resistant construction and a waterproof enclosure
- A method for ventilating and drying the bathroom after use
Exact requirements depend on the manufacturer, room volume and local code. A generator can be purchased before the room is ready, but it cannot compensate for an enclosure that leaks steam or lacks waterproofing and service access.
What raises the price
- Larger shower volume requiring a higher-capacity generator
- Custom tile, stone, glass or unusual stall geometry
- Demolition and reconstruction of an existing bathroom
- Relocating water lines, drains or electrical circuits
- Creating a vapor-resistant ceiling, walls and door system
- Adding ventilation and a practical drying strategy
- Limited access for equipment delivery and future servicing
Questions before choosing a kit
The useful first question is not simply which kit to buy; it is whether the bathroom can contain, produce and manage steam. Have the installer calculate the enclosure volume, verify power and water requirements, identify the control location and show how the generator will be serviced without opening finished walls.

| Planning issue | Elevator | Sauna | Steam shower |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Vertical access between floors | Dry or humid heat in a dedicated cabin or room | Steam inside a sealed shower enclosure |
| Structural work | Often substantial: hoistway, floor openings and landings | Ranges from assembly to room construction and site work | Usually enclosure, waterproofing and finish alterations |
| Electrical needs | Equipment-specific service and controls | Heater circuit; a panel upgrade may be needed | Dedicated generator power and controls |
| Water and plumbing | Not normally the core system, but surrounding work can affect utilities | May be needed for the room or site; guide allowances vary | Essential: water supply, steam piping and drainage |
| Moisture and ventilation | Not the defining issue | Humidity protection and ventilation are important, especially indoors | Critical: sealed enclosure, vapor resistance and post-use drying |
| How standardized the purchase is | Equipment can be standardized; hoistway is site-specific | Cabins are more standardized; custom rooms are not | Generator packages exist, but the finished shower is construction-intensive |
How to obtain a dependable budget
- Document the existing conditions. Photograph the proposed area, note floor-to-floor dimensions, measure doorways and identify the electrical panel, water lines, drains and ventilation routes.
- Define the performance and layout. For an elevator, list stops and landing access. For a sauna, specify indoor or outdoor placement, capacity and heater type. For a steam shower, provide enclosure dimensions and the desired control location.
- Have the site assessed before selecting equipment. The elevator footprint and cut-out, sauna electrical capacity and steam-shower volume determine which models are suitable.
- Request itemized bids. Require separate prices for equipment, delivery, labor, structural work, electrical, plumbing, waterproofing, ventilation, permits and inspections.
- Compare equal scopes. A manufacturer’s starting price, a cost-guide average and a general contractor’s complete proposal measure different things. Ask each bidder to state exclusions and allowances.
- Confirm responsibility and approvals. Put the installer, permit applicant, inspection coordinator, warranty contact and service provider in writing.
- Allow for site-specific changes. Keep the proposal open to documented conditions such as concealed framing damage, inadequate electrical service or required moisture remediation rather than accepting an unexplained contingency.
Common budgeting mistakes
- Using the elevator price as the whole project budget: the quoted starting figure excludes hoistway construction.
- Assuming a sauna kit needs no building work: indoor humidity control, electrical capacity, ventilation and finish repairs may be significant.
- Buying a steam generator before designing the enclosure: generator sizing and controls depend on the room, and service access must be preserved.
- Comparing averages without checking geography and date: the cited guides are U.S. estimates from June or July 2026, while the pound figures are UK examples.
- Leaving permits and inspections out of the contract: local requirements and licensing differ, so assign responsibility before work starts.
- Accepting a single lump sum with no exclusions: you cannot tell whether a cheap bid omits structural, electrical, plumbing or moisture work.
What a complete proposal should tell you
A usable proposal identifies the exact equipment or model class, quantity and finish; shows labor and construction separately; states assumptions about the existing structure and utilities; lists permits and inspections; and explains exclusions, allowances, warranty coverage and service access. It should also identify who coordinates trades when a product installer and a general contractor are involved.
Because the published numbers are estimates rather than guaranteed quotes, obtain site-specific pricing before ordering equipment or opening floors, walls or ceilings. Recheck current manufacturer requirements and local code at the time of permitting.
