Honolulu Design Center’s façade uses custom reflective red and silver aluminum-composite panels to turn a three-story building into a visual story about Hawaii’s volcanic and ocean landscapes. RIM Architects shaped the exterior as a flowing wave, while the red “Honolulu Red” finish suggests lava cooling as it reaches the sea and the silver cladding reads as reflected water.
A façade designed as a landscape in motion
Honolulu Design Center is not a conventional box wrapped in a decorative skin. RIM Architects designed its exterior as a curving, undulating form that translates two of Hawaii’s most recognizable forces—volcanic lava and moving ocean water—into architectural geometry.

Matthew Gilbertson, principal at RIM Architects, developed the wave-like exterior for a three-story, 80,000-square-foot center at 1230 Kapiolani Boulevard in Honolulu. The building combines contemporary furniture retail with a gathering place for Honolulu’s contemporary arts community. Its public identity therefore depends heavily on the façade: visitors encounter the building as a large-scale piece of visual communication before they enter it.

Red panels represent lava cooling toward the ocean
The project’s most distinctive finish is a custom pearlescent color called “Honolulu Red.” Under changing light, the surface can shift visually from orange to bright red and gold. That variation is central to the concept: the panels are intended to recall molten lava as it cools while flowing toward the sea, not simply to provide a permanently uniform red surface.
Because metallic and pearlescent finishes react to viewing angle, daylight, cloud cover and nearby reflections, the façade changes as people move past it. A panel that appears orange from one position may read as red or gold from another. This optical movement reinforces the building’s larger theme of flowing natural forces.
Silver panels create a reflected wave
Silver metallic panels form a convex element described in the project material as a “reflected wave.” Their role is to suggest water at the edge of the shore, where the ocean catches and returns the surrounding light.
The red and silver areas are therefore not unrelated color fields. Red establishes the heat and movement of volcanic material; silver supplies a cooler, reflective counterpoint associated with the sea. The curved geometry links them, making the building read as one continuous landscape rather than a collection of signs.

How the metal-panel façade manages water
Elward’s record describes a Secondary Guttered Rainscreen system. In a rainscreen assembly, the visible cladding is separated from the backup wall so that water reaching the panel joints can be collected and drained instead of being treated as though the outer skin were the building’s only waterproof barrier.
Internal gutters carry water to weep points
For this project, the panel system uses internal gutters. Water is directed down those concealed channels toward the bottom of the wall, where it can exit through weepage points. The approach is especially relevant to a façade with many curves, joints and changes in plane, because the drainage path has to remain predictable even where the outer surface is visually complex.

Final weather protection still depends on the complete wall assembly, including the backup wall, flashings, membranes, sealants, joints and penetrations.
Route-and-return fabrication makes the curves possible
Elward also describes route-and-return fabrication. In this process, the aluminum-composite material is routed from the back to create controlled folds, then returned or bent to form edges and three-dimensional shapes. That method allows flat stock to become the sweeping profiles seen from the street while preserving a finished exterior face.
Curved architectural panels are not produced simply by ordering a standard sheet in a special color. The fabricator must coordinate panel dimensions, fold locations, edge returns, attachment points, joint layouts and the intended viewing direction. Small errors in those decisions can interrupt the visual continuity of a wave or create drainage problems at a transition.

Why the finish and form work together
A red rectangular panel would communicate very little about lava. The Honolulu project depends on the interaction between finish and shape. The undulating surface gives the color a changing angle to the sun, while the pearlescent coating supplies shifts in hue that make the surface appear active.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The same principle applies to the silver portion. A flat silver wall might resemble a typical metallic façade, but a convex “reflected wave” creates gradients of brightness and shadow. As daylight moves, the panel can appear to swell, recede or catch a sharp highlight, producing an impression closer to water than to a static wall.
This is a useful lesson for designers: a material concept should be tested against the geometry that will carry it. Color samples viewed on a flat board cannot fully predict how a metallic or pearlescent finish will behave across a curved elevation.
What the historical specification actually says
Elward’s project record identifies both colors as 4 mm PE & Plus Core ALUCOBOND. That wording is the historical project specification reported for the Honolulu Design Center. It should not be silently replaced with the name of a current product formulation.
Current ALUCOBOND PLUS information from 3A Composites describes a flame-retardant mineral core and highlights properties such as flatness, formability, weather resistance and ease of processing. Those present-day descriptions provide useful product context, but they do not prove that the 2010 façade used an identical core, coating package or certification.

Elward’s current system information also uses names such as EV-A.50 Guttered and Gasketed Dry System and lists 4 mm or 6 mm aluminum-composite material for several system types. The available project record does not establish that EV-A.50 was the designation used for the Honolulu installation. A current specification must therefore be confirmed through a manufacturer’s submittal and project-specific review.

How to specify a similar façade today
A new project inspired by Honolulu’s façade should begin with a performance brief, not with a color name. The appearance is only one part of the specification; the panel core, fire behavior, geometry, drainage and attachment method determine whether the design can be built and approved.
1. Define the visual objective
Decide whether the design requires a genuinely pearlescent shift, a more stable metallic red, or a custom coating developed for a particular light environment. Record the intended appearance at key viewpoints and under daylight conditions. Require large samples or mock-ups when the façade relies on color movement, because small swatches cannot show how a finish behaves across a curve.
2. Select the core and verify fire performance
Identify the exact core construction and its tested fire classification for the jurisdiction and building type. Do not assume that two panels with similar trade names have the same reaction-to-fire performance. The architect, façade consultant, code professional and manufacturer should review the complete wall assembly, not just the panel sheet.
3. Establish thickness and structural criteria
Panel thickness affects stiffness, fold behavior, weight, attachment details and the maximum practical panel size. A 4 mm panel is documented at Honolulu Design Center, but that historical value is not a universal recommendation. Wind pressure, building height, support spacing, seismic movement, thermal expansion and local code requirements must be calculated for each project.

- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete

4. Test the geometry with the fabricator
Provide the fabricator with the desired curves, radii, transitions and joint rhythm early. Route-and-return work can produce expressive forms, but every return consumes material and influences the edge detail. A digital model should be coordinated with shop drawings so that the architectural surface, substructure and drainage paths agree.
5. Design drainage before finalizing the skin
Map where water collected behind the outer panels will travel. Internal gutters, joints, flashings and weep outlets need a continuous path to the exterior. Curved corners and changes in slope deserve particular attention because they can concentrate water. Review the rainscreen as a complete system rather than treating gutters as an isolated accessory.
6. Coordinate interfaces and maintenance access
Resolve transitions at roofs, parapets, doors, glazing, signs, lighting and service penetrations. Metallic finishes can make dirt, scratches and inconsistent replacement panels more visible than matte surfaces, so the specification should address cleaning methods, replacement-panel color matching and access for inspection.

What is and is not known about buying the same material
The evidence identifies a custom architectural installation fabricated for a specific building. It does not establish that the exact Honolulu Red finish, historic PE & Plus Core formulation or complete guttered rainscreen assembly is sold today as a ready-to-buy consumer product.
Aluminum-composite panels are available in many markets, but a small panel listing is not equivalent to the engineered façade installed at Honolulu Design Center. A buyer would need to verify the current manufacturer, panel size, core, fire documentation, finish availability, fabrication limits and suitability for the intended use. The project’s color name alone is not enough to reproduce its appearance.
Why the project remains useful to construction professionals
Honolulu Design Center demonstrates how a façade can carry cultural and geographic meaning without relying on literal imagery. There is no printed picture of lava or a wave. Instead, the designers use curvature, reflectivity, color shift and controlled water drainage to make the building perform as an abstract landscape.
It also shows the value of aligning design intent with fabrication expertise. RIM Architects established the concept; Elward translated it into routed, returned panels and a guttered rainscreen; and the construction team had to coordinate a complex outer skin with the building behind it. The result depends on all three layers—design, fabrication and installation—working together.
The takeaway
The “fiery” metal panels at Honolulu Design Center are a custom architectural interpretation of Hawaii: pearlescent red panels evoke molten lava cooling toward the sea, while convex silver panels suggest reflected waves. The documented 2010 installation used 4 mm PE & Plus Core ALUCOBOND in a Secondary Guttered Rainscreen system fabricated by Elward. Anyone adapting the idea today should preserve the design logic while rechecking current core technology, fire classification, coating availability, fabrication capabilities and project-specific drainage requirements.
