How Battery Energy Storage Systems Work with Solar and the Power Grid

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A battery energy storage system (BESS) stores electricity electrochemically and releases it later under the direction of inverters and control software. With solar, it can absorb excess daytime generation and supply electricity after sunset, during a demand peak, or when the grid is unavailable. A grid-connected system can also charge from the utility and export power when its controls and interconnection agreement allow it. The trade-off is that charging and discharging are not perfectly efficient: some energy is lost in conversion and retrieval.

What a battery energy storage system does

A BESS is a coordinated system rather than a battery pack alone. Its principal elements are electrochemical cells, a battery-management system, power-conversion equipment, protection equipment, meters and a controller. Together they determine when energy enters the battery, how much can be stored, when it is released and which electrical loads receive it.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules produce direct-current (DC) electricity. Most buildings, construction sites and utility networks use alternating-current (AC) electricity, so inverters convert between the two forms and regulate voltage, frequency and power flow. The battery stores energy electrochemically; it does not store electricity in the same form in which a PV panel produces it. During discharge, power electronics convert the battery’s DC output into AC for loads or the grid.

The U.S. Department of Energy summarizes the central limitation this way: “Although using energy storage is never 100% efficient—some energy is always lost in converting energy and retrieving it—storage allows the flexible use of energy at different times from when it was generated.” The useful result is time-shifting: generation and consumption no longer have to happen simultaneously.

How electricity moves through a solar-plus-storage system

Solar production

PV modules generate DC whenever sunlight reaches them. Output varies with time of day, season, clouds, shading, module temperature and the array’s operating conditions. At midday, a solar array can produce more power than a building is using or more than an inverter can pass to the AC side.

Conversion to building or grid power

An inverter converts PV DC to AC for normal loads and, when permitted, for export to the utility. The inverter also controls how much power is sent to a battery, the building or the grid. A battery system may use a separate battery inverter or a hybrid inverter that manages both PV and battery conversion.

Charging and storing

When the controller calls for charging, electricity is routed through power-conversion equipment into the battery. The battery’s cells convert electrical energy into chemical energy. Charging can come from PV, the grid or both, depending on the equipment, programmed operating mode and interconnection rules.

Discharging

When the controller calls for discharge, the cells release DC electricity. The inverter converts it to AC and sends it to selected building loads, a construction-site distribution system or the utility grid. Every conversion step consumes some energy, and the battery may retain an operating reserve that is not available for normal use.

AC-coupled and DC-coupled architectures

The coupling arrangement determines where conversion occurs and which equipment must be coordinated. Neither architecture is universally best; the appropriate choice depends on whether the project is new or being retrofitted, the PV inverter and battery inverter specifications, the desired operating mode and interconnection requirements.

Characteristic DC-coupled PV and battery AC-coupled PV and battery
Electrical path The battery connects on the PV array’s DC side, commonly through a hybrid or bidirectional inverter. PV is converted to AC by its PV inverter; AC is converted to battery DC for charging and back to AC for loads or export.
Potential advantage Can capture array power that would otherwise be clipped when PV output exceeds inverter nameplate capacity, subject to operating settings. Can be added alongside existing AC PV equipment, which may simplify some retrofits.
Conversion path May avoid one AC conversion when solar energy goes directly into the battery, depending on the design. Charging and discharging generally require conversion between AC and DC through battery power electronics.
Compatibility requirement Requires a compatible hybrid or bidirectional inverter and coordinated controls; not every inverter supports this operation. Requires compatible AC inverters, protection, controls and interconnection settings.
Main design question How much PV can be captured, and how will the hybrid inverter manage PV, battery and loads? How will separate PV and battery inverters coordinate power flow, protection and grid behavior?

In NREL’s System Advisor Model documentation, a DC-connected model assumes a bidirectional or hybrid inverter for modeling purposes. That assumption should not be treated as proof that a selected commercial inverter can perform bidirectional operation. Verify the manufacturer’s specifications and the project’s approved electrical design before choosing equipment.

Energy capacity, power capacity and duration

Two ratings answer different questions. Energy capacity is how much energy the battery can store, normally expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh) for smaller systems or megawatt-hours (MWh) for larger systems. Power capacity is how quickly the system can charge or discharge, expressed in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW).

Term What it answers Construction or facility example
Energy capacity (kWh or MWh) How much energy is available over time. Whether the system has enough stored energy to support selected site loads through a planned operating period.
Power capacity (kW or MW) How much load can be served at one moment. Whether it can start or run the site’s largest simultaneous electrical loads without exceeding the inverter rating.
Duration Usable energy divided by sustained power, after accounting for reserves and operating limits. How long supported loads could run at a specified, steady demand; it is not a single universal number for the system.

For example, a system may have substantial kWh capacity but an inverter that cannot deliver the instantaneous kW needed by a large motor. The reverse is also possible: a high-power system can support a large short-duration load but run out of usable energy quickly. Published nominal capacity may exceed the energy available to the operator because controls preserve a reserve and because temperature, voltage, state of charge and degradation affect operation.

How the controller decides when to charge or discharge

A BESS controller follows a dispatch strategy. It measures PV production, facility demand, battery state of charge, electricity prices and grid conditions, then sends commands within the limits of the inverters, battery and interconnection agreement.

Solar self-consumption

The controller directs surplus PV into the battery instead of exporting it or curtailing it. Later, it discharges to serve on-site loads. This is useful when solar production and the site’s highest demand occur at different times, such as a facility that produces most of its PV energy during the day but continues operating after sunset.

Peak shaving

The system discharges when facility demand approaches a chosen threshold. Reducing the highest demand interval can lower a demand charge where the tariff includes one. The controller must retain enough power and energy to respond when the peak occurs; a battery that was depleted earlier cannot shave a later peak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time-varying price response

When electricity prices vary by hour, the controller can charge during lower-price periods and discharge during higher-price periods, subject to its programmed limits. Some systems use automatic dispatch; others use a manual schedule. The financial result depends on the tariff, losses, degradation, export rules and the cost of operating the system, so no universal payback period follows from the technology alone.

Grid services and solar smoothing

A front-of-meter BESS can be dispatched for services such as shifting energy into an evening demand period, responding to short fluctuations or reducing curtailment when generation exceeds what the grid can accept. At a solar site, rapid battery response can smooth transient changes caused by passing clouds. These services require controls, communications and market or utility rules that match the system’s capabilities.

Can a BESS send power back to the grid?

Yes, if the system is designed, approved and configured for export. A front-of-meter plant may sell energy or provide grid services through its market participation arrangement. A behind-the-meter system may export excess PV or battery energy when the utility allows it. Export is not automatic: the inverter, protection settings, metering, control software and interconnection agreement must all permit the operating mode.

A project can also be configured for zero export, in which controls keep power behind the meter and reduce charging or generation when export would exceed the permitted limit. The applicable utility requirements and local electrical rules determine which settings and studies are required.

What happens when the grid goes down?

Most grid-tied solar inverters shut down when utility power is lost. This anti-islanding behavior helps prevent a customer’s equipment from energizing lines that utility workers believe are de-energized. Solar panels alone therefore do not normally provide outage power.

A solar-plus-storage system can provide backup only when it includes the necessary islanding and control functions. During an outage, a properly configured system:

  1. Detects that utility service has failed.
  2. Disconnects the supported electrical system from the utility grid.
  3. Establishes a stable local electrical reference through a suitable inverter.
  4. Supplies only the loads included in the backup design, within the battery’s power and energy limits.
  5. Re-synchronizes and reconnects when utility service returns, following the approved control sequence.

Backup may cover a selected-load panel rather than an entire building. Construction managers should identify the circuits that must remain energized, the starting demand of motors and other equipment, and the expected outage duration before sizing the battery and inverter. A system configured for resilience may reserve energy for an outage instead of using all capacity for peak shaving or price response.

Grid-forming inverters can allow sufficiently large solar-plus-storage systems to help restart portions of a grid, but that is a specialized, system-level capability. It is not a promise that an ordinary building battery can restart the public network.

What determines real-world performance?

Conversion losses

Energy is lost whenever electricity changes between AC and DC and whenever the battery charges or discharges. A round trip therefore returns less energy than was initially put in. The loss depends on the conversion equipment and operating conditions; a generic efficiency percentage would be misleading without a specific model, test method and configuration.

Temperature and voltage

Battery behavior varies with temperature, voltage and operating state. Modeling tools account for these variables because they affect available energy, power and losses. Equipment installed on a construction project must be operated within the manufacturer’s environmental and electrical limits.

Degradation and cycling

Repeated cycling changes battery performance over time. The rate depends on chemistry, depth of discharge, temperature, voltage and the dispatch pattern. A design that cycles aggressively for daily price response may have different degradation assumptions from one reserved mainly for infrequent outages.

Operating reserves

Controls may hold part of the nominal capacity in reserve for backup, grid response or battery protection. Consequently, the energy shown on a nameplate, the energy available to the controller and the energy delivered to a load are not necessarily identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery chemistries and why there is no single best choice

NREL’s System Advisor Model includes lead-acid, lithium-ion, vanadium redox flow and all-iron flow batteries. Each chemistry has different characteristics, including how it responds to power demands, how it stores energy, how it degrades and what balance-of-system equipment it requires. The cited material does not establish a universal ranking or a single best chemistry for every solar, building or grid application.

When comparing proposals, evaluate the chemistry together with the intended service, usable energy and power ratings, coupling architecture, inverter compatibility, efficiency assumptions, degradation model, temperature range, operating reserve and local operating requirements. Comparing chemistry names alone can conceal important differences in system design.

A practical design checklist for a solar or construction project

  • Define the service: backup, solar self-consumption, peak shaving, price response, grid services or a combination.
  • List the loads: identify continuous demand, motor-starting demand and circuits that must remain energized during an outage.
  • Separate kW from kWh: size inverter power for simultaneous load and battery energy for the required operating period.
  • Map the electrical path: document PV DC circuits, PV inverters, battery converters, switchgear, meters and the point of interconnection.
  • Choose AC or DC coupling: consider whether the project is new construction or a retrofit, possible PV clipping and conversion paths.
  • Verify bidirectional capability: confirm that the selected inverter and controls support the intended charging and discharging modes.
  • Set dispatch priorities: decide how much capacity is reserved for outages or grid services before allowing routine economic dispatch.
  • Check export and islanding rules: obtain utility approval and verify protection, metering and reconnection requirements.
  • Review operating assumptions: require documented assumptions for temperature, voltage, degradation, reserves and usable capacity.

Common misunderstandings to avoid

  • “A bigger kWh rating will run any load.” Not if the inverter’s kW rating or surge capability is insufficient.
  • “Solar panels keep working automatically during an outage.” A normal grid-tied inverter shuts down unless an approved islanded system provides the required controls.
  • “All stored energy comes back out.” Conversion losses, reserves and operating limits reduce deliverable energy.
  • “Every inverter can charge a battery.” Bidirectional operation requires compatible equipment and controls.
  • “One chemistry is best everywhere.” The right choice depends on service, architecture, operating conditions and project requirements.
  • “A battery creates additional energy.” It shifts energy through time; it cannot create energy and loses some during the cycle.

Bottom line for project owners and builders

A BESS makes solar and grid electricity dispatchable: it charges when energy is available or economically favorable and discharges when the building, site or grid needs power. The essential design decisions are the electrical path, the inverter’s power rating, the battery’s usable energy capacity, the dispatch strategy and the approved behavior during an outage or export event. Treat AC/DC coupling, bidirectional compatibility, reserves, losses and degradation as engineering decisions rather than assumptions, and size the system around the specific loads and service it must deliver.
