It is the name of the blue finish applied to the metal roofing across the Center for Courageous Kids in Scottsville, Kentucky. The color is the first major visual cue many visitors encounter: it is set against white building exteriors and repeated across a medical-camp campus created for children whose medical challenges may prevent them from attending a traditional camp.
The campus used a coordinated roofscape of more than 50,000 square feet of 24-gauge Snap-Clad panels. The result is a practical building envelope and a recognizable identity for the campus. Descriptions of activities, operating patterns and camper totals are historical case-study information, not confirmation of the Center’s current programs.

What “Award Blue” means in this project
The headline refers to a roofing finish, not to an award ceremony. Award Blue is the selected color for metal roof panels on the Center for Courageous Kids campus. White walls and blue roofs create a deliberately simple palette that can be recognized from a distance and repeated from one building to the next.

That visual decision matters more on a multi-building campus than it would on a single structure. A consistent roof color can make separate buildings read as one place, while the contrast with white exteriors keeps roof forms legible. In this case, the color was chosen as part of the Center’s identity rather than as an afterthought to the construction package.

A medical-camp setting shaped the design
The Center was founded by Betty Turner Campbell, who converted her father’s farm into the camp. Sherwin-Williams describes a setting intended to offer activities such as swimming, horseback riding, boating and fishing at no charge, together with an on-site medical center. Those descriptions explain why the campus needed more than a conventional recreation building: lodging, activity spaces and medical support had to coexist in one environment.
The Center is characterized as a place for children whose medical challenges might keep them from attending a traditional camp. That mission gives the exterior palette a human purpose. A campus can be technically successful yet feel institutional; a bright, coherent color scheme can signal welcome before a visitor reaches an entrance. Color alone is not established to improve medical outcomes or accessibility, but the documented intent was to make the facility feel cheerful rather than clinical.
Why the white-and-blue palette was selected
Roger Mutie, identified in the Sherwin-Williams case study as the Center’s president, connected the palette directly to the organization’s character. He said, “The Center is a happy place, and we’re happy to have our facility represent that.” Mutie described Campbell’s decision: “She decided on the white and blue combo because it was cheerful, happy and crisp.”
Those comments describe an architectural brief in plain language. White provides a clean field for doors, windows and landscape to stand out; blue roofs supply a repeated accent that distinguishes the campus from an ordinary institutional complex. Because the roofs are visible on multiple buildings, the color does identity work at a larger scale than a painted sign or entrance feature.

No color-rendering study, visitor survey or comparative analysis of alternative palettes is published. The evidence supports a more precise conclusion: the owners selected white and Award Blue to express a happy, crisp character, and the construction team carried that choice across the campus roofing.
What was installed on the buildings
Snap-Clad panels at campus scale
PAC-CLAD identifies the roofing system as Snap-Clad and specifies 24-gauge panels in Award Blue. More than 50,000 square feet were used across multiple buildings. That quantity indicates a coordinated, project-scale procurement rather than a small accent roof. Repeating one panel system and finish helps separate structures retain a common visual language even when their plans or functions differ.
“24-gauge” is the supplied specification for the metal sheet; no converted thickness, substrate description, seam details or attachment schedule are provided. Those omissions matter when another project team attempts to reproduce the work. Gauge alone is not a complete roofing specification: deck conditions, underlayment, slope, flashing, edge treatment, drainage and installation requirements would still need to be established in the construction documents.

Sherwin-Williams identifies the coating as Fluropon and highlights ultraviolet protection, stain resistance and durability as product attributes. These are manufacturer claims, not independently reported performance tests for this campus. No measured color-retention data, maintenance records, warranty terms or post-occupancy inspection are provided.

For an owner, that distinction is practical. A finish may be selected for its stated resistance properties, but the contract should still identify the exact product, color, warranty conditions, cleaning requirements and approved repair methods. Exposure, detailing and workmanship influence how any roof performs over time.
How the project team was organized
The credits identify Hardaway Construction in Nashville for design/build work, Petersen Aluminum as panel supplier, and Gunter Construction Roofing and Geoghagen Roofing as roofing contractors. The spelling and location details associated with Geoghagen differ slightly, so the name should be checked against the contract or final project documentation when the credit is reused.
A multi-building roof package places unusual importance on coordination. The design/build contractor must align roof geometry and penetrations with several building programs; the panel supplier must maintain finish and fabrication consistency; and roofing contractors must sequence installation around other trades. No schedule, change-order history or installation method is published, so no claim about schedule performance should be inferred. What is documented is the division of responsibility and the decision to carry one finished-panel system over multiple buildings.
Understanding the acreage discrepancy
The two principal manufacturer accounts describe different land areas. Sherwin-Williams calls the original farm 168 acres, while PAC-CLAD describes a 140-acre campus. These figures should not be merged into a single acreage claim. They may refer to different boundaries—the farm acquired by the founder versus the developed or identified campus—but the difference is not explained.

Use the figure that matches the question being answered: 168 acres when discussing the farm described by Sherwin-Williams, and 140 acres when citing the PAC-CLAD project description. Treating either number as a surveyed current property total would go beyond what is documented.

Design and Build With Metal reported a $16.3 million facility cost in a 2010 account. That is a historical project figure, not a current replacement cost or a bid benchmark for comparable construction. Inflation, code requirements, labor rates, site work and program changes make direct present-day comparisons unreliable without a new estimate.
Sherwin-Williams also reports that nearly 18,000 campers had been served since the Center’s founding. This is a cumulative historical figure from an undated case study. It should not be read as a current annual attendance number, proof of present operation or a forecast of future demand.
What this case teaches building teams
Make identity part of the envelope decision
The roof is often treated as a performance layer first and a visual element second. This project shows how a finish can serve both roles. Selecting the color early allows the owner, architect, supplier and installers to coordinate one recognizable appearance instead of trying to match buildings later.

Repeat a palette where the site has many structures
On a campus, consistency can be more valuable than novelty. Repeating white exteriors and blue roofs helps visitors understand that separate buildings belong to one organization. The approach is especially useful where the site includes different functions but needs a shared identity.
Document product claims separately from verified results
Manufacturer literature can explain why a coating was selected, but it does not replace independent testing or project records. A specification should distinguish stated attributes—such as UV protection, stain resistance and durability—from measured results, warranty obligations and observed maintenance performance.
Preserve context in project credits
Names, dates and quantities are easy to flatten when a case study is summarized. Keep each figure tied to its attribution, retain the distinction between farm acreage and campus acreage, and identify whether a cost is historical. That discipline prevents a visually appealing project story from becoming an inaccurate construction reference.

What is and is not established about the Center today
The Center’s founding, campus and historical activities are documented, but they do not establish current operating status, current program availability or present-day camper numbers. They also do not establish current stock of Award Blue panels, present warranty terms or any purchasing channel.
Anyone planning a visit, partnership or new work should confirm those details with a current official Center source. The architectural facts remain useful as a record of the campus project; they should not be presented as a current program guide.
Why the roof is central to the project story
At the Center for Courageous Kids, the roof finish carries the project’s most visible message. Award Blue links separate buildings, contrasts with white exteriors and expresses the cheerful character described by the Center’s leadership. The documented construction choices—Snap-Clad panels, a 24-gauge specification, a Fluropon finish and coordinated installation across multiple buildings—show how an envelope system can become part of an institution’s identity.
The strongest conclusion is also the most bounded one: the project is a documented example of using a consistent metal-roof finish to give a medical-camp campus a welcoming, recognizable presence. The documented material supports the design intent and basic construction facts; it does not provide independent performance comparisons, current operating information or a universal prescription for every facility.
