AI-powered computer vision can give construction teams a continuous early-warning layer for selected, visible hazards. It turns camera or sensor data into structured observations: who or what is present, where it is, what it is doing, whether it conflicts with a site rule, and whether the condition lasts long enough to require action.
The practical workflow is camera or sensor → detection → tracking → spatial rules → alert → human intervention → corrective action → analytics. That makes the technology useful for PPE, restricted zones, housekeeping and some worker–vehicle interactions. It does not make a site automatically safe, prove regulatory compliance or replace guardrails, exclusion zones, competent-person inspections, training and other conventional controls.

What AI-enabled computer vision means
Computer vision extracts information from images and video. Machine learning and deep learning provide models that recognise objects, people, PPE, movements and patterns. An AI rules engine converts those detections into site-specific safety events, such as a person entering an active crane exclusion zone.

- Computer vision: identifies visual features, objects, locations and movements.
- Machine learning: learns patterns from labelled examples and other training data.
- Edge AI: processes footage on or near the jobsite, reducing latency and video transmission.
- Generative AI or vision-language models: can summarise incidents, search event histories or draft reports, but require human verification.
- Sensor fusion: combines video with UWB, RFID, GPS, LiDAR, telematics, access-control or environmental data.
Recognising a hard hat is a relatively bounded object-detection task. Judging “unsafe behaviour” or “imminent fall risk” requires time, distance, site geometry, task context and often human review.

How a construction safety system works
1. Capture images and sensor data
Inputs may come from existing IP or CCTV cameras, temporary site cameras, mobile phones, drones, robots, body-worn cameras, LiDAR and worker or equipment-location systems. Camera selection must follow the hazard. A progress camera may be too distant, poorly angled or low-resolution for PPE or proximity monitoring.
2. Detect objects and conditions
Detection models identify people, hard hats, high-visibility clothing, vehicles, barriers, scaffolds, openings and other objects. Outputs commonly include an object class, bounding box or segmentation mask, confidence score, timestamp, camera ID and sometimes a track ID. CNN-based and YOLO-based approaches are common in construction-safety research, including a 2025 systematic review of 122 peer-reviewed studies (systematic review).
AWS also provides a PPE detection API that analyses people in images for items such as head, face and hand protection.
3. Track movement across frames
Tracking links detections over time. This lets a system distinguish a brief false detection from a person who remains inside a danger zone, a vehicle approaching a worker or a worker moving towards an unprotected edge.
Tracking can fail when people are hidden by vehicles or materials, overlap in crowded areas, wear similar clothing, move through dust or darkness, or leave and re-enter the frame.
4. Apply spatial rules
Pixels do not automatically represent real-world distance. Systems may use camera calibration, floor-plane projections, polygonal zones, virtual trip lines, distance thresholds, BIM geometry, depth sensors or LiDAR. AWS describes using projected object positions and relationships with floor markings to determine boundary violations (AWS architecture example).

5. Evaluate site-specific rules
A detection becomes an event only after rules are applied. Examples include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- “Hard hat absent for more than 10 seconds inside Zone A.”
- “Worker enters a crane exclusion zone while lifting is active.”
- “Pedestrian and excavator remain within the configured separation distance.”
- “Walkway obstruction persists for five minutes.”
- “Person detected near an unguarded edge.”
Rules should be configurable by site, area, shift, task, contractor, equipment, weather, work permit and active operation. A zone can be restricted only while demolition, lifting, energised work or material movement is underway.
6. Alert a person who can act
A useful alert states what happened, where and when it happened, which rule was triggered, the severity or confidence, and includes an image or short clip. It should also identify the responsible person, recommended action, escalation status and whether the event was confirmed or dismissed.
Delivery may use a dashboard, mobile app, email, SMS, radio or control-room integration, an EHS platform, a ticketing system or an edge-device alarm. The objective is not maximum alert volume; it is maximum validated, actionable intervention without alert fatigue.
7. Turn events into learning
Aggregated events can reveal repeated PPE issues by shift, blocked routes, high-risk equipment interactions, unresolved corrective actions and risk concentrations associated with particular tasks or work phases. These are leading indicators, not proof that the system reduced injuries.
What construction hazards can AI monitor?
PPE compliance
Systems may detect hard hats, high-visibility vests, safety glasses, gloves, masks or respirators, hearing protection and visible harnesses. AWS’s construction example describes combining site imagery, model training and managed machine-learning deployment for PPE monitoring (AWS and TrueLook example).

However, seeing an object resembling a hard hat does not prove correct fit, certification, condition, rating or suitability for the task. OSHA’s construction PPE rule was revised to require properly fitting PPE, effective January 13, 2025 (OSHA PPE requirements). Ordinary footage generally cannot verify fit or certification.
Fall protection and work at height
Computer vision may flag workers near unprotected edges, missing guardrails, floor openings, unsafe scaffold access, elevated work without visible harnesses, or activity on ladders and platforms. Fall-risk monitoring is a significant research area, but performance depends on camera position, lighting, occlusion and whether the camera can see the relevant edge and connection point (fall-risk monitoring review).
A camera alert is only an additional warning. OSHA’s fall-protection guidance prioritises prevention and protection measures such as guardrails, covers and fall-arrest and rescue systems (OSHA fall-protection guidance).

Vision systems can monitor people entering excavator or dump-truck blind spots, vehicle–pedestrian interactions, crane swing radii, machinery exclusion zones and line-of-fire situations. Vendors such as Intenseye and viAct market these capabilities.
Reliable proximity monitoring requires calibrated cameras, perspective correction, object tracking, zone geometry and a clear definition of dangerous separation. A two-dimensional image can make safely separated objects appear close, while an obstructed view can hide a genuine conflict.
Restricted-area intrusion
Rules can identify entry into excavations, demolition areas, electrical rooms, active lifting zones, concrete-pour areas or heavy-machinery corridors. Dynamic rules are particularly useful because a zone’s status may change by shift or task.

Housekeeping and access routes
Potential detections include blocked walkways, debris, spills, unattended objects, obstructed vehicle routes and missing barricades. AWS describes using spatial relationships with floor markings and persistence logic to reduce transient housekeeping alerts (AWS safety architecture).

Crane, hoist and lifting operations
Computer vision may identify people beneath suspended loads, entry into lifting exclusion zones, hook or load movement and unsafe proximity during hoisting. These are high-consequence uses, but loads and riggers can be obscured. Lift plans, qualified operators, spotters, exclusion zones and communication procedures remain essential.
Ergonomics
Pose estimation can analyse bending, twisting, kneeling, repetitive motion and awkward lifting postures. Unlike PPE recognition, ergonomic risk depends on load weight, repetition, duration, task design and worker context. A posture model is not a medical diagnosis or a definitive injury predictor.
Where AI adds value
- Broader coverage: selected zones can be monitored continuously or repeatedly when safety staff are elsewhere.
- Faster detection: supervisors can be notified soon after a visible condition appears.
- Consistent documentation: timestamped evidence, location, review status and corrective-action history can be retained.
- Less repetitive administration: automated observations can reduce manual footage review, provided alert volume is controlled.
- Better inspection targeting: safety professionals can focus on recurring violations, high-risk areas, new work phases and unresolved events.
The complete value chain is detection → human verification → intervention → corrective action → closure → learning. Detection alone is not prevention.
Important limitations
- Blind spots: cameras cannot see behind equipment, around corners, inside trenches, within confined spaces or under an obscured suspended load.
- Environmental conditions: night work, glare, rain, fog, dust, shadows and changing daylight can materially affect results.
- Occlusion and perspective: people and PPE may be hidden, and image distance may not equal real-world distance.
- Construction-stage drift: cameras, barriers, materials, subcontractors, PPE and work zones change throughout a project.
- Context limits: the model may not know whether a worker is authorised, trained, correctly connected to a lifeline or performing a task that requires particular PPE.
- False positives: bright materials may resemble high-visibility clothing; shadows may resemble holes; debris may resemble obstructions.
- False negatives: missed events can create misplaced confidence, especially in crowded or poorly lit areas.
- Base-rate problems: rare serious events can generate many false alerts even from a model that performs well on a balanced test set.
Research is developing, but much of the evidence still comes from retrospective datasets, laboratory validation or narrowly defined tasks. Reviews identify generalisability, environmental variability, privacy, workflow integration, metric inconsistency and limited long-term field validation as recurring obstacles (2025 monitoring review; digital OHS evidence review).
AI does not replace conventional safety controls
Computer vision should sit inside the hierarchy of controls, not above it. A software warning is weaker than eliminating a hazard or physically preventing exposure.

How to evaluate a vendor
- Define the hazard: Is it visible, frequent, objective and actionable? Start with one use case, not a promise to detect every unsafe behaviour.
- Audit cameras and conditions: Check resolution, frame rate, field of view, night performance, mounting, vibration, weather, power, connectivity and occlusion.
- Demand operating-condition results: Ask for precision, recall, false alerts per camera-hour, missed-event rate and latency by lighting, weather, camera angle, density and site phase.
- Inspect the workflow: Confirm alert confirmation, dismissal reasons, assignments, escalation, audit logs, evidence review and closure tracking.
- Clarify architecture: Edge processing can reduce latency, bandwidth and video transmission; cloud processing supports central management, updates and multi-site analytics. A hybrid approach may be best.
- Check integration: Ask about existing CCTV or ONVIF/IP cameras, EHS tools, BIM or digital twins, telematics, access control, mobile apps, APIs, webhooks, single sign-on and data exports.
- Price the whole deployment: Include installation, camera moves, edge hardware, connectivity, cloud inference, storage, rule configuration, model tuning, support and reconfiguration.
- Set privacy boundaries: Establish whether faces are blurred, identity recognition is disabled, raw footage leaves the site, how long data is retained and who can access it. Safety monitoring does not inherently require facial recognition.
- Test vendor claims: Treat claims such as “90% risk reduction,” “high accuracy” or “OSHA compliant” as incomplete until the vendor defines the baseline, event type, site conditions and evaluation method.
Worker communication is part of deployment. Digital surveillance can affect privacy, autonomy, trust and perceptions of safety (U.S. Government Accountability Office report). Prohibit undisclosed productivity surveillance and avoid automatic discipline based solely on an unverified alert.
How to run a responsible pilot
- Select one measurable hazard: Suitable starting points include hard-hat compliance at an entrance, excavator proximity, restricted-zone entry, walkway obstruction or crane-zone intrusion.
- Establish a two-to-four-week baseline: Record manual observations, event frequency, detection and correction times, camera coverage, near misses and supervisor workload.
- Run silent mode: Let the system generate alerts without changing operations. Compare them with human-reviewed footage and calculate true positives, false positives, false negatives and missed coverage.
- Introduce controlled alerts: Begin with low-risk notifications, human confirmation, clear escalation and no automatic disciplinary action.
- Measure operational value: Track response time, confirmed violations, corrective-action closure, alert volume, system uptime, workload, worker understanding and performance as the site changes.
- Scale only with governance: Document approved and prohibited uses, retention, permissions, human review, performance thresholds, worker communication, vendor accountability, data portability and deletion.
Commercial options
AWS building blocks suit organisations with cloud, engineering or data-science capability. AWS provides flexible model training, deployment, video, edge, storage and analytics components, but a buyer must build or integrate camera ingestion, zones, rules, workflows and support. The reviewed AWS material does not establish a complete construction-safety deployment price.

viAct markets a construction-focused platform covering PPE, work at height, restricted zones, equipment proximity, cranes, housekeeping, scaffolding, edge AI, LiDAR, drones, wearables and reporting (viAct construction platform). It is more relevant to buyers seeking a broad, configurable deployment than to those wanting a narrowly benchmarked, self-service product.
Intenseye Core AI markets more than 50 safety-indicator categories, including PPE, housekeeping, crane areas, machine-area controls and vehicle interactions, alongside EHS analytics and task management (Intenseye Core AI). Its enterprise and multi-site orientation may be excessive for a small project.
Protex AI focuses on existing-CCTV integration, unsafe-event detection, PPE, rule-building, ergonomics and EHS analytics. An AWS Marketplace listing showed, at the time of the August 16, 2026 commercial snapshot, $45,000 per site for 12 months plus $2,500 per camera, with additional AWS infrastructure costs. Marketplace pricing and contract terms should be rechecked before purchase (Protex AI listing).
NAVA Vision AI SafetyView markets PPE, unsafe behaviour, restricted zones, near misses, existing CCTV/IP-camera integration and enterprise-system integrations. Its AWS Marketplace listing promotes a zero-cost proof of concept and directs buyers to a private offer; it does not establish public production pricing (NAVA SafetyView listing).

Generative AI can summarise event histories, answer questions about reviewed incidents and draft reports. It should not invent unseen facts, infer intent, make unreviewed regulatory findings or trigger disciplinary decisions. For safety-critical work, a person must verify the evidence and the resulting action (research on responsible AI in construction safety).
