Hisense’s L9Q Google TV Projector Hits a Blistering 5,000 Lumens

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—the Hisense L9Q is genuinely exceptionally bright. Hisense rates this 4K triple-laser ultra-short-throw projector at up to 5,000 ANSI lumens, while ProjectorCentral measured 5,185 ANSI lumens in its Vivid picture mode. That makes the claim credible, but it does not mean every mode delivers 5,000 lumens or that the L9Q becomes immune to sunlight.

The L9Q is best suited to buyers who want a huge 120- to 200-inch image in a living room, sports area, or multipurpose space where some ambient light is unavoidable. In a fully dark theater, its brightness premium may be less valuable than better black levels, a lower-priced projector, or a better screen.

What is the Hisense L9Q?

The L9Q is a premium “Laser TV” rather than a conventional long-throw home-theater projector. Its ultra-short-throw design uses a 0.18 throw ratio, allowing it to sit close to the wall or screen while producing an image from 80 to 200 inches.

  • RGB triple-laser light source using Hisense’s LPU Digital Laser Engine 2.0

  • 80- to 200-inch rated image size
  • Google TV on the U.S. version

Hisense announced the L9Q at CES on January 3, 2025. The U.S. model combines the projector, smart-TV functions, and substantial built-in audio in a television-style package, although the screen may be sold separately.

Is the 5,000-lumen claim real?

There are two separate facts to keep in mind:

  1. Hisense’s specification: up to 5,000 ANSI lumens.
  2. Independent measurement: ProjectorCentral recorded 5,185 ANSI lumens in the L9Q’s Vivid mode.

The independent result slightly exceeds the advertised figure, so describing the L9Q as a 5,000-lumen projector is fair. The important qualification is that ProjectorCentral’s measurement was taken in Vivid mode—the brightest setting, not necessarily the most accurate or most comfortable for film viewing.

Brightness normally falls when using more restrained picture modes or calibrating the image for accurate color. A better interpretation is that the L9Q has unusually high light output and significant headroom, not that every movie, HDR scene, or picture preset will appear at 5,000 lumens.

ProjectorCentral also measured BT.2020 coverage at 95.6% using the xy method and 97.17% using the uv method. Hisense’s separate claim of 110% BT.2020 uses a different reporting convention, so the figures should not be treated as directly equivalent or contradictory.

Read ProjectorCentral’s independent L9Q measurement.

What does that brightness mean in a real room?

High output is most useful when the image is large or the room is not fully dark. It can help sports, games, live television, and daytime viewing retain more punch than they would on a dimmer projector. It also provides useful headroom when the projector is paired with an ambient-light-rejecting, or ALR, screen.

However, 5,000 lumens does not defeat physics:

  • Direct sunlight falling on the screen can still wash out the image.
  • A bright projector cannot produce OLED-like blacks.
  • A white wall is not equivalent to a properly matched ALR screen.
  • Vivid mode may be unnecessarily bright and less cinematic in a dark room.

TechRadar identifies brightness as one of the L9Q’s major strengths in rooms with ambient light, while noting that dark-room buyers may get better value from the cheaper Hisense PX3-Pro.

Picture quality beyond brightness

The L9Q supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. Hisense also claims 5,000:1 native contrast and 110% BT.2020 color coverage. Its triple-laser design is intended to deliver a wide color gamut without relying on a traditional lamp.

Brightness should not be confused with overall cinema performance. Projection systems remain dependent on room reflections, screen quality, viewing angle, and black-level limitations. In a dark theater, a lower-output projector can sometimes look more natural because it does not overwhelm the viewer and because contrast and black-level behavior become more important than peak light output.

The L9Q’s rated laser life is 25,000 hours. The specification sheet defines that figure as the expected point at which the light source has fallen to approximately 50% of its original luminance, rather than a promise that it will maintain full brightness for that entire period.

Google TV and connectivity

The U.S. L9Q runs Google TV, with access to services including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Hulu, and Disney+, subject to the usual app and regional availability. It also supports Chromecast and AirPlay, plus Google Home and Alexa compatibility.

Other listed features include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, HDMI connectivity with eARC support, and a built-in TV tuner. TechRadar reports ATSC 3.0 support for the U.S. version.

Do not assume that every international L9Q has the same software. Some non-U.S. listings use Hisense’s VIDAA platform instead of Google TV. Check the regional model number and product page before buying.

Built-in audio is a major part of the package

Hisense equips the L9Q with a 6.2.2-channel audio system rated at 116 watts. It includes up-firing speakers, Dolby Atmos support, and tuning developed with Devialet; Hisense also references tuning associated with the Opéra de Paris.

This makes the L9Q more self-contained than many projectors. It can deliver a much more substantial soundstage than a typical projector speaker and may be sufficient for television, sports, and casual movie nights.

A separate sound system can still provide deeper bass, clearer surround separation, greater placement flexibility, and a better upgrade path. Buyers who already own an AV receiver and speakers should treat the built-in audio as a convenience rather than a reason to pay twice for equipment.

Screen and installation requirements

UST projectors are less forgiving about their surroundings than their simple placement suggests. The L9Q needs a flat, rigid, carefully aligned screen. Small waves or surface imperfections can become visible because the light reaches the screen at a very shallow angle.

An ALR screen is the appropriate premium partner for a bright-room installation. It can reject some light from the room and improve perceived contrast, although high-gain and ALR materials may introduce viewing-angle limits, texture, hotspotting, or brightness nonuniformity.

The 200-inch specification is a maximum, not a universal recommendation. The best size depends on seating distance, screen gain, room lighting, HDR preferences, image uniformity, and how much brightness the viewer finds comfortable. For many homes, 100 to 120 inches will be easier to align and more balanced than pushing to the maximum.

U.S. price and availability

As observed on August 18, 2026, Hisense’s U.S. direct listing showed the standalone L9Q at $4,999.99, reduced from a listed regular price of $5,999.99. Best Buy also listed it at $4,999.99. Prices, stock, promotions, warranty terms, and bundle contents can change, so treat these figures as dated observations rather than permanent pricing.

Hisense listed an ALR-screen bundle from $6,799.99 and a three-piece projector, screen, and HT Saturn soundbar bundle at $7,599.99 when checked; the latter was marked sold out. A screen and installation can materially change the total cost of ownership.

Who should buy the L9Q?

  • Viewers seeking a 120- to 200-inch image.
  • Households watching sports, games, or television with daylight or room lighting.
  • Buyers who want Google TV integrated into the U.S. model.
  • People who value unusually capable built-in audio.
  • Those prepared to budget for a suitable ALR screen and precise installation.

Who should skip it?

  • Dedicated dark-room theater owners who prioritize black levels over peak brightness.
  • Anyone planning an image below about 100 inches.
  • Value-focused buyers who do not need 5,000 lumens or 200-inch capability.
  • Owners who already have an excellent screen and external sound system.
  • Buyers expecting a television-like setup without alignment, furniture, or screen compromises.

Alternatives worth considering

Model Best suited to Main trade-off
Hisense PX3-Pro Lower-cost UST buyers and darker rooms 3,000 ANSI lumens and a 150-inch maximum
Hisense XR10 Buyers wanting conventional placement, lens shift, optical zoom, and a larger image Not UST; uses VIDAA rather than Google TV
Hisense C2 Ultra Large-screen buyers prioritizing price and placement flexibility Not the same UST Laser TV package or integrated audio system
Hisense M2 Pro Buyers seeking a much cheaper route to a large 4K image Far less brightness and a less premium feature set

The L9Q’s premium is easiest to justify when its brightness, UST convenience, Google TV integration, and built-in audio all solve real problems. If only the large image matters, a less expensive conventional projector may deliver better value.
