Do not put the garment in a heated dryer until you have checked that the stain is gone.
That method is not appropriate for every garment. Dry-clean-only clothing, leather, suede, fur, embellished or structured garments, heat-sensitive synthetics, vintage pieces, and anything with an unclear care label should generally go to a professional cleaner rather than being treated with a household iron.

Before you start: identify the garment’s limits
Check the care label before scraping, ironing, pretreating, washing, or drying. The label determines whether the garment can be washed, which temperatures are permitted, and whether it may be ironed. A “Dryclean Only” instruction is not an invitation to try a careful home-washing method; it means the garment should not be washed at home.
Do not use the home iron method on garments with:
- a dry-clean-only or dry-cleaning recommendation;
- leather, suede, fur, or delicate specialty materials;
- sequins, beads, glued decorations, delicate trims, or appliqués;
- heat-sensitive synthetic fibers or finishes;
- tailored construction that could lose its shape;
- a missing, contradictory, or unreadable care label.
For those items, carefully remove only loose surface wax and tell a professional dry cleaner what caused the stain. Candle wax is a stain that professional cleaners commonly handle, and they can choose a process suited to the fiber, dye, finish, and decoration.

What you need
- A dull knife, spoon, or other blunt-edged tool
- Clean, unpatterned paper towels or plain brown paper, as appropriate for the method
- A dry household iron, only if the care label permits ironing
- Liquid laundry detergent or a suitable liquid stain pretreatment
- A soft-bristled toothbrush, optional
- A clean towel or cloth to protect the work surface
Do not use a sharp blade, high heat, steam, or an untested solvent. If the wax is colored, the color may leave a separate dye or oily residue after the solid wax has been removed.
How to get wax out of washable clothes
1. Let the wax harden
Do not rub fresh wax. Rubbing can spread it farther through the fabric and push it into the fibers. Leave the garment undisturbed until the wax is firm.
If you need to speed this up, placing the garment in a freezer can make the wax brittle enough to snap off. Keep the garment protected from food or other contaminants, and do not use freezing as a substitute for checking the care label—some delicate materials and finishes need special handling.
2. Lift away the solid wax
Lay the garment flat. Use the edge of a spoon, a dull knife, or another blunt tool to lift the hardened wax from the surface. Work slowly from the outside of the deposit toward the center.
Use light pressure. The goal is to lift the wax, not cut the fabric, stretch a knit, disturb a finish, or pull at the fibers. Remove as much of the raised wax as you can before addressing the thin residue that remains.

3. Decide whether a paper-and-iron transfer is safe
For an iron-safe, washable garment, place clean, unpatterned absorbent paper over the remaining wax. If practical, place another layer beneath the stained section so softened wax has somewhere to transfer. A plain brown paper bag may be suitable when the product or garment instructions call for it, but avoid printed or strongly colored paper.
Set the iron to a low, dry, non-steam setting. Touch the paper briefly and move the iron rather than holding it in one place or pressing aggressively. As wax transfers into the paper, shift to a clean section or replace the paper. Continue only while wax is actually transferring.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsImportant limitation: some fabric-care guidance warns that ironing wax between paper can drive the stain deeper into certain fabrics. Skip this step if the garment is delicate, heat-sensitive, unpredictably dyed, difficult to identify, or not clearly approved for ironing. Even on an iron-safe garment, use the lowest permitted heat and stop if the fabric changes appearance or the wax spreads.
4. Test a pretreatment in a hidden spot
After the visible wax has been removed, a greasy, dull, or colored mark may remain. Before applying detergent or stain treatment, test it on an inside seam, hem allowance, or another hidden area. Let the test area dry and check for color loss, bleeding, texture change, or a ring.
Manufacturer instructions for wax stains name liquid laundry detergent or a liquid stain pretreatment for this stage. These are examples—not guarantees for every wax formulation, dye, fiber, or finish. If the test causes any change, stop and use a professional cleaner.

For the remaining residue, a product such as liquid laundry stain pretreatment—including Tide Ultra Stain Release Liquid, which its manufacturer names for pretreating wax-related residue—can be used if the care label and the product label permit it. Apply it to the mark, work gently with your fingers or a soft toothbrush, and follow the product’s stated contact time. Do not assume a branded product is safe for every fabric simply because it is designed for laundry.
5. Wash according to the care label
Wash the complete garment using the warmest water allowed by its care instructions. Use the recommended amount of detergent and the cycle appropriate for the fabric. Do not wash only a small treated patch if doing so could create uneven color or a visible ring.
For a washable, colorfast garment, a color-safe stain remover such as Clorox 2 for Colors is another manufacturer-recommended option for residual wax marks. Follow that product’s label exactly, including its stated pretreatment time. It is an alternative, not a universal solution, and should not be used unless the garment and product labels are compatible.
6. Air-dry and inspect before using a heated dryer
Air-dry the garment after washing, then inspect it in good light. Heated drying can set some stains and make another treatment more difficult. If any wax, oily halo, or dye mark remains, do not tumble-dry it; repeat the compatible pretreatment and wash, or take the garment to a cleaner.
Once the stain is gone, dry the garment in the way its care label allows. If the label permits ironing, check the fabric again before applying heat.
What to do when the stain does not come out
There is still solid wax
Let the garment cool and harden again, then lift away more of the deposit with a blunt edge. If the garment is iron-safe, you may cautiously repeat the low, dry transfer step with fresh paper. Do not raise the temperature to force faster transfer.

A colored halo or oily mark remains
The solid wax and the residue are different problems. Test a suitable liquid pretreatment, apply it as directed, wash according to the care label, and air-dry for inspection. Colored candles may leave dye that does not respond like plain wax. Do not escalate automatically to bleach: any bleaching product must be explicitly compatible with both the fabric and its color, and treating only one area can create uneven color.
The garment cannot be ironed
Skip the paper-and-iron step. Remove only the hardened surface wax, test a compatible liquid pretreatment if the care label allows washing, and launder as directed. If the label prohibits washing, or if the fabric is delicate or valuable, use a professional cleaner.

The stain was already put through the dryer
Do not keep applying hotter heat. Let the garment cool, inspect it, and use only a care-label-approved pretreatment and wash. Because heat can set residue, several treatments may not restore the original appearance. A cleaner is the better next step for expensive, delicate, dyed, or structured garments.
The care label is missing or unclear
Do not guess based only on how the fabric feels. The wrong temperature, solvent, or washing process can cause permanent damage. Remove loose wax without heat and take the item to a professional cleaner, explaining that the stain is candle or other wax.
How to prevent wax spills on clothing
- Keep candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from clothing and places where they can be knocked over.
- Use a tray or protective covering beneath candles and wax-melting projects.
- Keep napkins or washable coverings between clothing and candle wax during meals or events.
- Do not brush or rub a fresh spill. Let it harden so it can be lifted with less spreading.
- Deal with the spill before washing or drying the garment, and always inspect it before applying heat.
Quick decision guide
| Garment or stain condition | Safest next step |
|---|---|
| Washable garment; care label permits ironing | Harden, scrape gently, use low dry heat with fresh absorbent paper, pretreat, wash, and air-dry for inspection. |
| Washable garment; ironing prohibited | Harden and lift the wax, then use only a tested, label-compatible pretreatment and wash. |
| Dry-clean-only, tailored, embellished, leather, suede, fur, vintage, or valuable item | Remove loose surface wax only and use a professional cleaner. |
| Unknown or damaged care label | Do not experiment with heat or chemicals; consult a cleaner. |
| Residue remains after washing | Do not heat-dry. Repeat a compatible treatment or escalate to professional cleaning. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put clothes with candle wax straight into the washing machine?
It is better to harden and lift off the solid wax first. Pretreat any remaining oily or colored residue, then wash according to the care label. Inspect and air-dry before using a heated dryer.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What if the candle wax is colored?
After the solid wax is removed, a dye or oily halo may remain. Test a compatible liquid pretreatment, follow the garment and product labels, wash as directed, and air-dry for inspection. Do not assume bleach is safe; it can damage fabric or create uneven color.
Should I use a sharp knife to scrape off wax?
No. Use a spoon, dull knife, or another blunt edge and work gently. A sharp blade can cut or pull the fabric.
The Bottom Line
Remove wax in stages: harden it, lift it gently, use low dry heat and absorbent paper only when the garment allows it, pretreat the remaining residue, and wash according to the care label. Air-dry and inspect before using a dryer. When the garment is dry-clean-only, delicate, valuable, embellished, or unidentified, professional cleaning is the safer choice.
