Where the two Buda projects are planned
The sites are separate: the H-E-B is planned along the I-35 corridor at 15300 South IH 35, and Layne’s Chicken Fingers is planned at 381 Old San Antonio Road, in a former Zaxby’s restaurant space. MySA reported the locations on October 4, 2026 (MySA).

H-E-B: a new store on the I-35 corridor
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation’s project record, TABS2027001661, lists “H-E-B New Store – Buda” as new construction for a 132,563-square-foot grocery store. The filing gives an estimated project cost of $61,249,595 and a status of “Project Registered.” It schedules construction from May 1, 2027, through June 12, 2028; those dates are filed estimates, not confirmation that work has started or that the store will open by the scheduled completion date (TDLR project record).

A March 11, 2026 joint release from Buda EDC, the City of Buda, Hays County, and Hays County ESD No. 8 describes the store as part of redevelopment of a long-dormant landfill site north of Main Street, on the southbound I-35 access road. The release says H-E-B will fund roadway improvements informed by a Traffic Impact Analysis along the IH-35/Main Street corridor, including the Old San Antonio Road connector. It estimates remediation costs at $30 million and says public partners committed a combined $20.1 million incentive package over 30 years (joint release).

What happens to Buda’s existing H-E-B site?
The same release says H-E-B committed to redeveloping its existing Buda grocery location after the new store opens. The stated commitments are to repurpose at least 60% of the former property for retail sales-tax-generating businesses within 18 months after the new store opens and create at least 50 new full-time-equivalent jobs within one year of opening. These are commitments in the release, not reported completed results (joint release).
Layne’s Chicken Fingers: planned renovation of a former Zaxby’s
MySA reports that Layne’s is planned for 381 Old San Antonio Road in a former Zaxby’s space. A September 2026 Zabalist project record reproducing the TDLR filing lists an 850-square-foot project, an estimated cost of $400,000, and scheduled construction from November 9, 2026, to January 8, 2027. The tracker cautions that filed dates do not establish whether work started or finished; the filing does not state an opening date (Zabalist project record).

The filed costs and areas describe different scopes—a new grocery store and a renovation of an existing restaurant space—so they are not like-for-like measures of construction cost or project value. The H-E-B figures and status come from the TDLR record; the Layne’s figures and milestones are reproduced in the Zabalist record.
