A September 2025 Google Home app leak revealed three upcoming wired products: the Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen), and Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen). Google officially launched them on October 1, 2025. Existing battery-powered Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell models remain available, so Google has not made the entire Nest range wired-only.
For homeowners and installers, the important change is practical: these models need continuous electrical power, Wi-Fi, and—if you want extended history or 24/7 recording—potentially a Google Home Premium subscription.

What the Google Home app leak revealed
Analysis of Google Home version 3.40 in September 2025 found images and setup references for three products before Google announced them publicly. The discovery was useful evidence that a refresh was coming, but an app teardown is not the same as a product launch.
App files can reveal product names and approximate designs, but they do not necessarily confirm final specifications, prices, availability, or whether a product will ship. In this case, the leak showed:
#1 Best Overall
- Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Indoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Kids are playing soccer in the living room”[3]; and get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Google Nest Cam Indoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; and with a wider, taller field of view, you can see even more of a long hallway or large room[1]
- Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)
- Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen)
- Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen)
- Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen)
The leak correctly indicated that the new launch cycle would focus on wired products. It did not establish that Google had discontinued battery cameras.
The original September 2025 report is best understood as a preview of the lineup, not a complete specification sheet.
The products Google actually launched

What “wired-only” means
Here, “wired” refers to electrical power—not necessarily a wired network connection. These are Wi-Fi-connected Google Home devices. They still depend on a suitable wireless network for app access and cloud-connected features unless Google explicitly specifies otherwise.
A wired installation means the camera remains connected to power rather than periodically recharging an internal battery. That makes it a better fit for a fixed location, but it also makes planning more important.

Advantages of continuous power
- No charging visits or battery replacement.
- Less risk of downtime from a depleted battery.
- More predictable live viewing and event capture.
- Better suitability for locations where battery charging is difficult.
- Eligibility for 24/7 video history on compatible wired devices and the appropriate plan.
Trade-offs for a construction or renovation project
- The installation needs a practical route from the camera to an outlet or existing wiring.
- Outdoor cable runs may require drilling, weather sealing, conduit, and careful excess-cable management.
- A visible cable can affect appearance and may create a tampering risk.
- A power outage can interrupt the camera, router, and cloud connection.
- Renters or homeowners who cannot drill may find a battery model easier.
For an outage-resistant setup, backing up the camera alone is not enough. The router and relevant networking equipment must also have backup power, such as a properly sized UPS.
What the 2K upgrade actually tells you
“2K” is a product label rather than one universal resolution standard. For the new Indoor Cam, Google specifies a 2560×1440 sensor and video up to 2K at 30 frames per second. It also lists HDR, night vision, 6× digital zoom, a 152-degree diagonal field of view, and two-way audio with noise cancellation.
That does not mean the camera will always deliver twice the usable detail of a 1080p camera. Real-world clarity also depends on lens quality, lighting, subject distance, field of view, compression, bitrate, and whether digital zoom is being used. A wider image can cover more space while showing less detail on a distant face or license plate.

The advertised resolution also needs to be separated from the recorded result. Maximum live-video output, stored event clips, compression, and subscription features can differ. Check the applicable Google specifications and plan terms rather than treating “2K” as a guarantee of identical quality in every mode.
Google Home Premium changes the ownership calculation
The hardware is only part of the cost for buyers who want substantial video history. Google renamed second-generation Nest Aware as Google Home Premium on October 1, 2025.
| Service level | Announced U.S. price | Relevant camera storage |
|---|---|---|
| No subscription | No recurring fee | Live streaming and 10-second event-video previews stored for six hours |
| Premium Standard | $10/month or $100/year | Five-minute event recordings stored for 30 days |
| Premium Advanced | $20/month or $200/year | Five-minute event recordings stored for 60 days; 24/7 video history for 10 days on compatible wired devices |
Live video and basic operation do not require a paid plan. The subscription becomes important if you want longer event history, searchable history, AI-generated descriptions and notifications, or continuous recording.
Google AI Pro includes Standard, while Google AI Ultra includes Advanced. That can make the new cameras more attractive to households already paying for one of those services. For a buyer starting from zero, however, a $99.99 indoor camera can become a $100- or $200-per-year service commitment if the included storage is not sufficient.
Eligible new cameras and doorbells may include a one-month Google Home Premium trial. Eligibility and availability vary by account and country, and the trial can auto-renew at the applicable paid rate unless it is canceled. Confirm the terms during setup. Google’s plan comparison contains the current feature and regional qualifications.

Installation considerations before buying
Indoor camera
Confirm that the chosen position has a nearby outlet or a clean route to one. Plan how the cable will be concealed or secured, especially in homes with children, pets, or high-traffic areas. The new wired Indoor Cam reuses the previous wired Indoor model’s wall-mount holes, which may simplify replacement work.
Outdoor camera
Before drilling, identify the power source, cable route, wall construction, exterior weather exposure, and sealing method. The new wired Outdoor Cam reuses the existing drilled mounting holes from the previous wired Outdoor model. Google also says it needs a smaller wall hole when routed through an indoor outlet than the previous wired Outdoor model or a battery camera using an optional cable.
Do not bury or expose the cable in a way that defeats its weather rating. Where a route passes through an exterior wall, use an appropriate weatherproof entry and seal the penetration. If the work involves new electrical wiring rather than simply connecting an approved device, use a qualified electrician and comply with local requirements.
Wired Doorbell
The wired Doorbell is for an existing compatible doorbell wiring arrangement, not simply any convenient low-voltage cable. Turn off doorbell and chime power at the breaker or fuse box before removing the old device. Google says the new model is compatible with the second-generation wired Doorbell backplate, potentially reducing patching and re-drilling during an upgrade.

Wired Nest versus battery Nest
Choose the new wired models when the camera will stay in one place, reliable power is available, and you want to avoid charging or potentially use 24/7 history. They are especially logical for a permanent exterior location or a wired Doorbell replacement.
Choose an existing battery Nest Cam or battery Nest Doorbell when installation flexibility matters more than continuous recording. Battery models can be easier for renters, temporary sites, seasonal properties, or locations without an accessible outlet. The trade-off is charging, possible cold-weather battery drain, and no 24/7 video history simply because a battery device is connected to optional wired power.
Google’s support documentation lists battery-powered Nest products separately from the new wired refresh. The accurate conclusion is therefore “the new refresh was wired-only,” not “Google abandoned battery cameras.”
Is wired better for security?
Not automatically. Wired power removes one failure mode—battery depletion—but introduces dependence on the electrical supply and the cable route.
A cut cable, unplugged adapter, damaged outlet, failed transformer, or power outage can disable monitoring. Continuous recording may also increase privacy concerns because more footage is retained in the cloud. Cable placement should be considered as part of the security design, not treated as an afterthought.
Google says these new connected-home products receive security updates for at least five years from the date Google began selling them through the U.S. Google Store. For this generation, that minimum period runs from October 1, 2025 through at least October 1, 2030. “At least five years” is a minimum support commitment, not a promise of indefinite feature or Gemini compatibility.
Who should buy the new wired Nest cameras?
- Buy them if you already use Google Home, Pixel, or Nest products and have reliable power at the installation point.
- Buy them if avoiding battery maintenance is more important than installation flexibility.
- Consider Premium Advanced only if 24/7 history, longer retention, or its advanced AI features justify $20 per month or $200 per year.
- Choose battery Nest instead if you cannot drill, route cable, or provide permanent power.
- Consider another ecosystem if you need local storage, Ethernet or PoE, solar options, professional monitoring, or a system that does not depend heavily on Google’s cloud plans.
Potential alternatives include Ring for Amazon Alexa households, Arlo for a broad range of subscription-backed cameras, Eufy for buyers investigating local-storage options, Reolink for wired Ethernet/PoE and local recording, and Blink for battery-oriented Amazon-compatible setups. Features and prices vary by model, so these are ecosystem alternatives rather than blanket claims that one is universally better.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe bottom line
The September 2025 app leak was accurate about the immediate direction of Google’s Nest camera refresh: the three new products are wired. But it was not evidence that battery Nest cameras had disappeared. The real decision is whether continuous power, Google Home integration, and optional 24/7 recording outweigh the installation work, outage and cable considerations, Wi-Fi dependence, and recurring Google Home Premium cost.
