That does not mean every existing device stopped working immediately. Google says existing Nest Protect units remain supported, and existing Nest x Yale Locks can continue using supported Google Home features. The important distinction is between product-line retirement and service shutdown.
Nest Protect owners should check each alarm’s 10-year replacement date, while Nest x Yale owners can keep using their locks for now but should plan carefully before buying replacement hardware. The most direct Google-supported alarm replacement is the First Alert SC5 Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm. For the discontinued lock, Yale’s current Google Home-oriented successor is the Yale Smart Lock with Matter.
What Google discontinued—and what it did not
Google announced on March 28, 2025, that it had stopped manufacturing the 2013/2015-era Nest Protect and the 2018 Nest x Yale Lock. Retail sales were expected to continue while remaining inventory lasted. The Google Store later marked Nest Protect as unavailable for sale while continuing to list it as supported.

The announcement was a hardware manufacturing and sales decision, not a universal end-of-support date for every unit already installed. Google’s 2025 Google Home updates documented continued functionality for Nest Protect and Nest x Yale Lock devices. Owners should therefore avoid two opposite mistakes:
- Do not assume an existing device failed simply because it is discontinued.
- Do not assume discontinued hardware will receive indefinite support or remain available when it eventually needs replacement.
Later reporting indicated that the Nest x Yale Lock was removed from the U.S. Google Store on July 2, 2026, after remaining stock was exhausted. That later store removal is separate from the original March 2025 discontinuation announcement.

Nest Protect: the 10-year expiration date matters more than the sales status
The most important issue for Nest Protect owners is not whether Google still sells the alarm. It is whether a particular unit has reached the end of its certified service life.
A second-generation Nest Protect must be replaced 10 years after its manufacture date. Its carbon-monoxide sensor has a limited certified life of up to 10 years, so an alarm that still powers on should not be treated as dependable long-term safety equipment after its replace-by date.
Check every unit individually. The manufacture and replace-by information may be shown on the device, its packaging, or in the Nest or Google Home experience, depending on the model and account setup. Do not rely only on the date you installed it: a unit may have been manufactured months before purchase.
What to do if a Nest Protect is expired
- Identify the manufacture date or replace-by date for each Nest Protect.
- Mark any second-generation unit that has reached its 10-year replacement point.
- Replace expired alarms promptly rather than treating the old unit as a temporary long-term solution.
- Choose a battery or hardwired replacement that matches the existing installation.
- Follow the replacement manufacturer’s instructions and applicable state, regional, and local fire and electrical requirements.
Smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms are life-safety equipment. A replacement should be selected and installed according to current manufacturer instructions and local requirements, not solely because it fits a particular app ecosystem.
The clearest Nest Protect replacement: First Alert SC5
Google specifically identifies the First Alert SC5 Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm as a compatible replacement path for second-generation Nest Protect owners using Google Home. The Google Store describes the SC5 as suitable for expanding an existing system or replacing expiring Nest Protect units, and says it is designed to use the existing Nest Protect base plate.
The SC5 is available in battery and hardwired versions. Depending on the model and configuration, its listed smart features include Google Home and First Alert app access, mobile smoke and carbon-monoxide alerts, remote testing or silencing, and interconnection with compatible First Alert/BRK alarms and Nest Protect devices.

If you are replacing an expiring alarm, compare the First Alert SC5 Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm versions carefully. A battery model is not automatically interchangeable with a hardwired model, and a hardwired installation may involve electrical-box, wiring, interconnection, and code requirements that do not apply to a battery alarm.
Can any smart smoke alarm replace Nest Protect?
No. A generic smoke-and-CO alarm may provide basic local protection, but it should not automatically be assumed to preserve Google Home integration, app alerts, or alarm-to-alarm interconnection.
Alarm manufacturers can use proprietary detection algorithms and communication interfaces. Google’s wireless-interconnect guidance warns against mixing products from different manufacturers unless the combination has been appropriately tested. The SC5 is a specifically identified compatible partner for the Nest Protect transition; an unrelated alarm found through a retailer search is not automatically equivalent.
Battery versus hardwired SC5
| Situation | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Replacing a battery Nest Protect | Confirm the battery SC5 model, mounting arrangement, battery requirements, and local placement rules. |
| Replacing a hardwired Nest Protect | Confirm the hardwired SC5 model, wiring compatibility, electrical-box requirements, interconnect limitations, and local code requirements. |
| Keeping existing Nest Protect units in the system | Verify the specific Google Home and First Alert compatibility described for the current product generation; do not infer that every older alarm combination is supported. |
The existing Nest Protect base plate may help with the physical transition, but it does not remove the need to follow the SC5 installation instructions. Before working on a hardwired alarm circuit, use a qualified installer where required and comply with applicable electrical regulations.

The Nest x Yale Lock was a key-free smart deadbolt with a keypad, remote locking and unlocking, custom passcodes, activity alerts, and automatic locking features associated with the Nest ecosystem.
Google’s updated Home app added full support for the Nest x Yale Lock and passcode management. That means existing owners should not be told that manufacturing ended and the lock consequently became unusable. If the lock is installed and functioning, owners can generally continue using its supported Google Home features while those services remain available.

However, discontinuation changes the buying and repair outlook. New units are no longer being manufactured, remaining stock has become limited, and used-market listings may have uncertain condition, missing components, outdated batteries, or unclear return and support expectations.
What current owners should do
- Keep the lock installed if it is working and meeting your needs.
- Confirm that you can still manage the lock and passcodes in the Google Home app.
- Keep a physical-key or other permitted entry plan available for emergencies.
- Do not buy old stock solely because it carries the Nest name.
- Before purchasing used hardware, verify the model, included mounting parts, keypad condition, return policy, and expected app compatibility.
Yale Smart Lock with Matter: the current replacement direction
Google and Yale now position the Yale Smart Lock with Matter as the Google Home-oriented successor product. Yale’s current model is designed for Google Home and supports Matter over Thread, app control, custom guest passcodes, real-time alerts, an activity feed, and physical-key backup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is important to understand what that means: the Yale Smart Lock with Matter is not a software update, retrofit module, or replacement keypad for an existing Nest x Yale Lock. It is a separate deadbolt installation with its own exterior keypad, interior lock, DoorSense sensor, adjustable deadbolt, mounting plate, key, and four AA batteries.
For Matter-connected operation, Yale says the lock requires a compatible Matter hub and Thread border router. Google-side devices identified as compatible infrastructure include the Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer 4K. Compatibility can depend on the exact device, software, network, Matter configuration, and desired feature, so check the current Yale and Google requirements before buying.
Yale Smart Lock with Matter replacement checklist
- Measure the door and existing deadbolt. Confirm that the lock’s physical dimensions and backset work with the door.
- Check the door condition. A binding, sagging, or misaligned door can cause problems for any motorized deadbolt.
- Confirm Matter infrastructure. Verify that you have—or are prepared to add—a compatible Matter hub and Thread border router for the connected features you want.
- Check Google Home compatibility. Confirm the current app, account, regional, and feature requirements before installation.
- Plan for access during the changeover. Keep the existing key, temporary access method, or another entry option available until the new lock has been tested.
- Treat it as a new installation. Do not assume the old Nest x Yale mounting hardware, settings, or passcodes transfer directly.
The Yale Smart Lock with Matter is Yale hardware designed for Google Home—not a new Google-manufactured Nest lock. That distinction matters for future support, app ownership, and product comparisons.
Legacy Nest x Yale owners and Nest Connect
Some legacy Nest x Yale configurations used Nest Connect as the bridge between the lock and the Nest service, particularly in configurations affected by the retirement of Nest Secure. If an existing lock is having connection problems, first determine whether the system uses Nest Connect, a compatible Google Home setup, or another supported arrangement.
A used Nest Connect may appear in resale listings, but it should be considered a legacy troubleshooting component, not a replacement lock. Availability, condition, account compatibility, and support expectations can vary. Confirm the exact Google-supported configuration before spending money on old bridge hardware.

| Working Nest Protect, less than 10 years from manufacture | Continue normal testing and monitoring; record the replace-by date. | Replacing it solely because manufacturing ended. |
| Expired second-generation Nest Protect | Replace it with an appropriate current alarm, with the First Alert SC5 as the specifically identified Google-compatible path. | Keeping an expired unit as a permanent safety device. |
| Working Nest x Yale Lock | Continue using it while supported Google Home functions work; make a backup entry plan. | Assuming discontinuation means immediate remote shutdown. |
| Failed or unavailable Nest x Yale Lock | Compare a new Yale Smart Lock with Matter and other compatible deadbolts; verify door and Matter requirements. | Assuming the Yale Matter model is a drop-in replacement module. |
| Hardwired alarm installation | Match the electrical model and follow local code and manufacturer instructions. | Mixing alarm brands or changing wiring without checking compatibility. |
Construction and installation considerations
For builders, remodelers, landlords, and homeowners managing several properties, this retirement is a useful reason to inventory installed smart-home hardware before an emergency replacement is needed.
- Record each Nest Protect’s location, generation, power type, manufacture date, and replace-by date.
- Record which alarms are hardwired, which are battery-powered, and how any interconnection is configured.
- Keep photographs of mounting plates, electrical boxes, and wiring before ordering replacements.
- Verify local requirements for alarm placement, interconnection, hardwiring, battery backup, and permits where applicable.
- For smart locks, record door thickness, backset, handing, deadbolt condition, hub availability, and emergency access procedures.
- Use current manufacturer installation documentation rather than assuming the discontinued product’s instructions apply to its successor.
Local fire and electrical rules can be stricter than the product’s minimum installation requirements. When replacing hardwired alarms or altering a door and deadbolt assembly, use the appropriate licensed trade or qualified installer for the jurisdiction and project.
Bottom line for owners
Google’s March 28, 2025 announcement retired the Nest Protect and Nest x Yale Lock product lines, but it did not create an automatic shutdown of every installed device.
Nest Protect: keep supported units in service only until their individual replacement date. Replace a second-generation unit 10 years after manufacture, and use the First Alert SC5 as the clearest Google-identified compatible replacement path. Match battery or hardwired models and do not mix alarm systems casually.
Nest x Yale Lock: existing locks can continue working with supported Google Home features. If replacement becomes necessary, the Yale Smart Lock with Matter is a separate installation that requires checking door fit and, for Matter-connected features, compatible hub and Thread border-router infrastructure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Google shut off Nest Protect alarms in 2025?
No. Google discontinued manufacturing and sales of the Nest Protect line, but its support material says existing Nest Protect devices remain supported. Owners still need to replace second-generation units 10 years after manufacture because the carbon-monoxide sensor has a limited certified life.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Did the Nest x Yale Lock stop working?
Not automatically. Discontinuing manufacturing does not by itself disable existing locks. Google added full Nest x Yale Lock and passcode support to the redesigned Google Home app, although future availability and support should not be assumed indefinitely.
Is the Yale Smart Lock with Matter a drop-in replacement for Nest x Yale?
No. It is a separate Yale deadbolt installation with new hardware, batteries, keypad, DoorSense sensor, and mounting components. Matter-connected features also require compatible Matter and Thread infrastructure.
Can Nest Protect and another brand of smoke alarm be interconnected?
Do not assume so. Alarm manufacturers may use proprietary detection algorithms and communication interfaces. Use a combination specifically identified as compatible by the manufacturers, and follow current installation instructions and local code.
The Bottom Line
In short: Google retired these products as items for sale, not as an immediate universal service shutdown. Check Nest Protect’s 10-year expiration date, replace expired alarms with a properly matched model such as the First Alert SC5, and treat the Yale Smart Lock with Matter as a new installation—not a plug-in replacement—for a discontinued Nest x Yale Lock.
