Identify the brand and model first, then use that manufacturer’s recovery instructions. If recovery is unavailable and the lock remains closed, replacing it may be the practical option.
Forgotten combination or changing a known combination?
These are different problems. A reset changes the combination when the lock is already open and in the required reset state. Recovering a forgotten code means finding out what combination opens the lock; a reset procedure does not necessarily do that.

There is no universal reset sequence for three-digit locks. Mechanisms and steps vary by brand and model, so do not apply instructions for one lock to another.
What to do if the lock is closed
- Identify the lock. Look for the brand and model number on the lock, packaging, or instructions. Check the manufacturer’s website for the exact model’s recovery guidance.
- Check for a serial number. For Master Lock products, the official lost-combination support page says a serial-numbered lock may be eligible for combination recovery through a distributor or by submitting a photo using its contact process. Master Lock says it cannot find combinations for locks without a serial number. This is that manufacturer’s policy, not a rule for every brand.
- If official recovery is not available, consider replacement. If the lock cannot be opened, a compatible replacement may be more practical than attempting a reset that requires access to the open lock. A replacement lock does not recover the forgotten code on the existing one.
Use the manufacturer’s current support page for its contact process and eligibility details, which can change. Avoid assuming that a default code will work on a used lock: a factory preset applies only where the instructions specify it for that model and condition.

If the lock is already open and you know its current combination
Find the exact model’s reset instructions and follow them in order. The steps are not interchangeable: for example, Master Lock’s instructions for models 175, 176, 177, and 178 require the lock to be open and use the reset tool packaged with those models. The instructions require opening it with the previous combination, or with the factory-set combination if it is new. Master Lock states, “Note that the shackle must be open to reset the combination.” That requirement applies to those models; check your own lock’s instructions.
Why model-specific instructions matter
Even locks from the same manufacturer may use different mechanisms. Master Lock’s 2013 instruction sheet for model 4692D gives 0-0-0 as the preset for a new lock and advises confirming that it opens and closes before setting a personal combination. That preset is not evidence that 0-0-0 will open a used lock whose combination has been changed.

A separate Master Lock instruction sheet describes a different sequence for the 4688 family: align the preset, remove the cable tip, set the digits while operating the button, and reinsert the cable tip. These are examples for specific models, not instructions for an unidentified three-digit lock. Verify the model and its applicable instructions before attempting a reset.
