Fire-station requirements are driven by the department’s mission, apparatus fleet, operating procedures and locally adopted codes—not by one nationwide dimensional standard. Size bays, doors, clear heights and circulation around the largest current or planned vehicle; control diesel and gasoline contaminants at the source; separate industrial, clean-equipment and living functions; and obtain approval from the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before fixing dimensions.
What a fire station must support
A fire station is both an operational workplace and a continuously occupied residence. Its layout must let crews respond immediately while supporting vehicle maintenance, protective-equipment care, training, administration, meals, hygiene and sleep. The Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG) identifies four recurring program groups: apparatus bays, apparatus support and maintenance, administration and training, and residential areas.

Typical functional areas
- Apparatus operations: vehicle bays, turnout-gear storage, hose and equipment storage, driver controls and direct paths to the crew exit.
- Support and maintenance: vehicle-service areas, SCBA cleaning and maintenance, protective-clothing care, medical-supply storage, tool storage and drying rooms.
- Administration and training: offices, briefing or training rooms, meeting space and public-facing functions where required.
- Residential functions: dormitories, day room, kitchen, showers, toilets, laundry and fitness areas.
The exact program changes with staffing, call volume, mutual-aid responsibilities, apparatus mix, maintenance practices and whether the station is staffed around the clock. Reserve space for future vehicles and facility changes without blocking response paths or compromising required separations.

How to determine apparatus-bay dimensions
There is no single nationwide minimum bay width, depth, door size or clear height established by the sources reviewed. Use the department’s actual apparatus schedule and dimensional drawings, then test the largest current and anticipated vehicle in every operating position. The WBDG principle is to size the room to the largest vehicle in the fleet or the largest vehicle reasonably anticipated.

| Design element | What should control it | Information to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bay length | Overall vehicle length, front and rear working zones, door position and circulation to equipment or crew areas | Manufacturer drawings for every vehicle, including future replacements |
| Bay width | Vehicle body and mirror envelope, neighboring apparatus, personnel movement and required working clearance | Maximum operating width with mirrors, compartments and stabilizers deployed |
| Clear height | Vehicle height, roof equipment, aerial or mast components, door hardware, sprinklers, lighting and structure | Highest vehicle configuration and the lowest overhead obstruction |
| Door clear opening | Vehicle envelope plus safe lateral and overhead margin; door operation must not obstruct response | Clear opening, not nominal door size, under the adopted building and fire codes |
| Turning and circulation | Site geometry, drive-through or backing movements, pedestrian routes and emergency departure sequence | Vehicle turning templates, civil drawings and department operating procedures |
Clearance around a fire truck
One cited regulatory example is Washington State. WAC 296-305-06509 requires at least three feet (0.91 m) around apparatus at qualifying fire stations built after December 17, 1977, and requires that clearance to remain free of storage or obstruction. The same section addresses clean, slip-resistant apparatus floors and hazards such as grease, oil and water. This is a Washington requirement, not a universal national minimum; another jurisdiction may adopt a different rule or enforce additional clearances.
Even where a code gives a minimum, the department may need more room for opening compartments, removing ladders, deploying stabilizers, donning PPE, connecting chargers, washing equipment or moving personnel safely. Draw the actual operating envelope rather than measuring only the parked vehicle body.
Doors and overhead conflicts
Bay doors must accommodate the largest vehicle and its roof-mounted equipment. Coordinate the clear opening with structural headers, tracks, operators, lighting, sprinklers, exhaust drops and any overhead door-warning devices. Provide a manual opening method for power failures, as recommended by the WBDG. Document who operates the manual release, where it is located and how it remains accessible when the station is dark or occupied by smoke.
Drive-through versus back-in bays
Where the site permits, WBDG states: “Ideally, the site will accommodate drive-through bays.” Drive-through arrangements can reduce reversing and simplify departure, but they consume more site depth and require two coordinated doors, drainage and secure circulation. Back-in bays may fit constrained sites, yet they demand a disciplined backing procedure, sightlines, warning systems and protected pedestrian routes. Neither configuration is automatically compliant; the AHJ and department must approve the operational plan.

Ventilation and exhaust-control requirements
Running engines inside a station introduces carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, diesel particulate matter, fuel vapors and other contaminants. Exhaust control should prevent contaminants from reaching dormitories, offices, kitchens, hygiene rooms and clean-equipment areas. A general carbon-monoxide alarm is a warning device; it does not replace source capture, exhaust ductwork or engineered ventilation.
Source capture and general ventilation
Coordinate a mechanical design that reflects the actual apparatus, engine locations, idling practices and door cycles. Source-capture systems may connect directly to tailpipes or exhaust outlets. General exhaust and makeup air address residual contaminants and support acceptable indoor air quality. The design team must select fan capacity, control logic, filtration where applicable, discharge locations, noise limits, freeze protection and backup or fail-safe features under current codes and standards.
The sources reviewed do not establish one universal air-change rate for ordinary apparatus bays. Do not copy an air-change number from another station without confirming its vehicle mix, climate, operating pattern and governing standard. A mechanical engineer should document the design basis and commission the system after installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApplicable guidance and alarms
The WBDG calls for vehicle-exhaust removal in apparatus bays and good ventilation in industrial areas. An archived 1997 Air Force guide says ventilation should prevent fuel vapors and exhaust fumes from migrating into administrative and personnel living spaces and recommends carbon-monoxide alarms and automatic ventilation in apparatus bays. Washington requires new fire stations to conform to American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) recommended criteria for internal-combustion-engine exhaust ventilation; it also requires fixed internal-combustion equipment to exhaust outdoors. The Washington rule states: “All new fire stations must be designed and constructed to conform to ACGIH ventilation recommended criteria for exhaust of internal combustion engines.” Verify the current adopted rule and edition for the project.

Separate dirty, clean and occupied functions
Use the apparatus bay as a controlled transition between industrial support spaces and clean or occupied areas. Pressure relationships, vestibules, self-closing doors, durable finishes and dedicated exhaust can reduce contaminant migration, but the architect and mechanical engineer must coordinate them as one system.
Contaminated protective equipment
Washington rules require contaminated or potentially contaminated protective clothing and equipment to be excluded from kitchens, living rooms, sleeping areas, hygiene areas and other nonwork spaces. Cleaning areas must be physically separated from food preparation, hygiene, sleeping and living functions. Drying areas for protective clothing must be well ventilated. These provisions are jurisdiction-specific examples, so confirm their applicability and any stricter local requirements.
SCBA and clean-equipment rooms
SCBA maintenance and other clean-equipment areas need protection from vehicle exhaust, cleaning chemicals, soot and contaminated gear. Provide a defined dirty-to-clean workflow: receive and isolate used equipment, clean it in the designated area, dry it with suitable ventilation, inspect it, then store it in a protected clean zone. Keep vehicle maintenance, fueling-related tasks and chemical storage out of that clean path.
Sleeping-area, fire and life-safety provisions
Sleeping quarters require particular attention because occupants may be asleep when an apparatus starts, an alarm activates or contaminants enter the building. Washington’s cited requirements separate sleeping areas from vehicle storage areas with assemblies having at least a one-hour fire-resistance rating and require smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors. The exact assembly, detection, sprinkler, egress and accessibility requirements depend on the locally adopted building and fire codes and the building’s classification.

Site access and fire-department circulation
Station-site design must work before a vehicle reaches the bay. Confirm public-road geometry, driveway grades, turning radii, gate operation, queuing, pedestrian crossings, apparatus staging and access for mutual-aid units. Obtain the department’s vehicle turning templates rather than relying on a generic passenger-car diagram.
California’s 2025 Fire Code provides a current example of a fire-service access rule: Chapter 5 includes an approved apparatus-access-road provision with a stated 150-foot (45,720 mm) access-distance rule and exceptions. That figure concerns fire-apparatus access roads, not bay depth or a universal requirement for every jurisdiction. Local adoption, amendments and AHJ interpretation control.
Compare layout options against the real mission
| Decision axis | Drive-through bays | Back-in or side-access bays |
|---|---|---|
| Response movement | Can reduce reversing and provide a direct exit when both doors remain clear. | May require controlled backing, spotters, cameras or warning systems. |
| Site demand | Needs additional depth, a second door line and coordinated drainage. | Can fit tighter sites but may shift circulation and maneuvering into the apron. |
| Door resilience | Two door systems require maintenance; each needs a manual power-failure method. | Fewer bay doors may simplify maintenance, but the single exit path is critical. |
| Contamination control | Through-ventilation can help, but exhaust discharge and makeup air still require engineering. | Less opening area does not remove the need for source capture and separation. |
| Future flexibility | Can support changing fleet directions if the site and structure allow. | May preserve site area, but later vehicle growth can make backing clearances inadequate. |
Evaluate both options for compatibility with the largest current and future vehicle, unobstructed response circulation, safe personnel clearances, manual door operation, exhaust-capture effectiveness, maintenance access, resilience, expansion potential and AHJ acceptance.

Counting a CO alarm as ventilation
Failure: Alarms are installed without source capture or adequate exhaust. Correction: Treat alarms as supplementary warning devices and provide an engineered exhaust and makeup-air system.
Allowing storage to consume clearance
Failure: Hose, carts or spare parts occupy the area needed to mount, dismount or service apparatus. Correction: Mark no-storage zones on plans, use dedicated storage rooms or wall systems, and inspect them operationally.
Ignoring power failure
Failure: Motorized doors, controls or exhaust depend on normal power with no documented fallback. Correction: Provide manual door release, emergency-power strategy where required, and written procedures that crews can use in darkness or smoke.

Decision rule for a safe, buildable station
Approve a fire-station layout only after the largest current and anticipated apparatus can enter, park, deploy equipment, exit and be serviced without obstructing required clearances. The project should control exhaust at the source, maintain separation between contaminated industrial work and clean or occupied spaces, protect sleeping areas, and satisfy the codes adopted where the station will be built. Washington’s three-foot example and California’s 150-foot access-road example demonstrate why numbers must remain tied to their jurisdiction and subject. The final dimensions belong in coordinated architectural, structural, civil and mechanical documents reviewed by the AHJ.
