Electrical wire colors are conventions, not a universal code or a safety test. Their meaning depends on the country, the wiring’s age and whether you are looking at a flexible cord or fixed cable. Treat unfamiliar conductors as potentially live: never use insulation color alone to decide what is safe to touch, cut or reconnect.
What wire colors can—and cannot—tell you
Within a particular wiring system, colors help distinguish conductor functions. Common terms include live or active/phase for a current-carrying conductor, neutral or grounded conductor for the neutral function, and protective earth or equipment grounding conductor for a safety connection. Neutral and protective earth/ground have different functions; they are not interchangeable.

There is no single mapping that applies worldwide, and colors can change between installation eras. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) warns: “However, there are many standards used around the world, and you should never assume that a cable of a particular colour is at a particular voltage.” A color also cannot confirm that a conductor is de-energized or that an installation is wired correctly.

Examples by jurisdiction and cable context
These are bounded examples from official or safety-focused sources, not a complete code guide. Do not apply a chart to a different country, cable type or installation era without checking the applicable local requirements.

United States: OSHA conductor identification
In OSHA’s construction electrical-safety explanation, a grounded conductor—commonly called the neutral—is identified by continuous white or natural gray insulation. An equipment grounding conductor is identified by continuous green, green with one or more yellow stripes, or bare. OSHA’s construction regulation says: “A conductor used as a grounded conductor shall be identifiable and distinguishable from all other conductors.”
This describes the cited OSHA workplace and construction requirements; it is not a complete residential color chart for every US jurisdiction. The cited material does not establish black and red as the only possible ungrounded, or “hot,” colors. Applicable local rules and the electrical system matter.

- ★【GAUGE SYSTEM EXPLAINATION】-AWG is a standardized system that measures wire diameters larger numbers indicate smaller wire sizes, with the smallest being 40 and the largest 0000 (4/0).
- ★【GAUGE RULES AND CONVERSIONS】-Every 6-gauge decrease results in a doubled wire diameter, while every 3-gauge decrease doubles the cross-sectional area, providing essential conversion insights.
- ★【DETAILED PROPERTIES】-The posters feature load-carrying capacity, resistance, and skin effects for copper conductors, offering a comprehensive view of electrical performance.

United Kingdom: appliance plug colors
| Function | Current appliance-plug color | Older appliance-plug color |
|---|---|---|
| Live | Brown | Red |
| Neutral | Blue | Black |
| Earth | Green/yellow | Green |
Electrical Safety First gives these colors for appliance plugs and says to unplug before removing a plug cover. The HSE confirms that British wiring colors changed in 2004. This plug example should not be treated as a complete guide to fixed-installation wiring.

WorkSafe New Zealand’s homeowner wiring code distinguishes cable contexts. Its examples for flexible cords show newer and older colors, while its older TPS cable example is listed separately. The codes cited are older editions hosted by WorkSafe, so their diagrams provide context rather than proof of the requirements for every current installation.

| New Zealand cable context | Active (phase) | Neutral | Earth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newer flexible cord | Brown | Light blue | Green/yellow |
| Older flexible cord | Red | Black | Green |
| Older TPS cable example | Red | Black | Green or green/yellow |
WorkSafe’s appliance-repair code also lists brown, light blue and green/yellow for new flexible cords, and red, black and green for old flexible cords. It says cords and fittings should suit the environment and expected physical conditions. Do not collapse cord and fixed-cable examples into one universal New Zealand chart.
How to respond when a wire’s identity is uncertain
- Do not infer voltage or isolation from color. A familiar color does not establish that the conductor is safe or correctly installed.
- Do not touch, cut or reconnect an unfamiliar conductor based on a chart. The source examples are limited by jurisdiction, era and cable type.
- Use a competent electrical person when you cannot safely establish the facts. HSE advises people who are not competent to check whether power is off to ask a competent person. Its guidance says: “If you are in doubt STOP WORK and consult a competent person.”
- For a UK appliance plug, unplug it before removing the cover. This is the specific precaution given by Electrical Safety First; it does not make other electrical work safe.
Why the exact installation matters
A reliable interpretation starts with the applicable jurisdiction and rules, then considers installation era and cable context before assigning a conductor function. The examples above cover only selected US OSHA identification requirements, UK appliance plugs and New Zealand cord/cable examples. They do not establish complete, current charts for every locality or for countries not covered here. If the applicable rules or the installation’s history are unclear, a chart is not a substitute for competent verification.
