There is no universal winner. The better garage heater depends on your local electricity and gas prices, the heat loss of the space, whether an adequate circuit or gas connection already exists, the heater’s rated efficiency and output, installation work, and how you use the garage. Electric resistance heat avoids combustion and onsite carbon-monoxide production, while a gas appliance requires correctly designed fuel supply, combustion air, venting, clearances, and maintenance.

Compare both options in delivered heat rather than by the price printed on an electric bill or gas bill. Then add installation, permits where required, maintenance, and the hours you actually heat the garage. The sections below show how to make that comparison and how to avoid common safety and sizing mistakes.

What “electric” and “gas” mean in a garage

“Electric heater” and “gas heater” describe energy sources, not a guaranteed level of comfort or performance. This comparison focuses on electric resistance heaters and fuel-burning gas garage heaters. A particular model may use a fan, radiant elements, a thermostat, electronic controls, or a combination of these, so compare the model’s specifications rather than relying on the fuel label.

Characteristic Electric resistance heater Gas combustion heater
Heat source Electric resistance elements convert electricity to heat at the point of use. Burns natural gas or another approved fuel and transfers combustion heat to the garage.
Onsite combustion None. Present; incorrect installation, poor maintenance, blocked or defective venting, and misuse can create carbon-monoxide hazards.
Energy comparison Use the electricity rate and the heater’s delivered output; point-of-use conversion is near one unit of heat per unit of electricity. Use the fuel rate, the unit’s rated efficiency, and any electricity used by the fan and controls.
Venting Resistance units do not need a combustion flue. Portable units still need safe placement and a suitable outlet. Requirements depend on the appliance design. Open-combustion natural-draft equipment draws combustion air from the room; sealed-combustion and direct-vent designs operate differently.
Existing infrastructure May require a dedicated circuit, wiring, disconnect, and electrical-panel capacity. May require a gas line, shutoff, regulator, vent system, combustion-air provisions, and electrical power for controls or a blower.

Do not assume that gas always heats faster, that electric heat is always cheaper, or that one fuel is safer in every garage. Those claims require a controlled comparison of specific models, installation conditions, and operating settings. The available official guidance does not provide a garage-specific head-to-head test of warm-up speed, heat distribution, or comfort.

Which heater is cheaper to run?

Start with your own utility rates and compare the cost of the same amount of delivered heat. The U.S. Energy Information Administration warns that prices expressed in different units cannot be compared meaningfully without converting their heat content. Its published conversion factors are 1 kilowatthour = 3,412 Btu and 1 therm = 100,000 Btu.

Step 1: Gather the inputs

  • Your electricity price per kilowatthour, including applicable delivery charges.
  • Your gas price per therm (or the local unit on your bill), including delivery charges.
  • The heater’s rated efficiency and output from its installation or specification sheet.
  • Fan, pump, ignition, and control electricity used by the gas appliance, if specified.
  • Expected hours of operation and whether you heat the entire garage or only a work area.

Use a current bill or utility tariff for the rate. A national household fuel comparison is not a personal garage estimate: housing size, weather, insulation, air tightness, equipment, and efficiency all change the result. EIA’s Winter Fuels Outlook 2026–27, published October 6, 2026, makes that limitation explicit.

Step 2: Convert each fuel to heat input

For electricity, multiply the price per kilowatthour by 3,412 to obtain the cost of one kilowatthour’s heat input in Btu. For natural gas, multiply the price per therm by 100,000 to obtain the cost of one therm’s heat input in Btu.

Then account for the equipment’s conversion efficiency. A resistance heater’s point-of-use conversion is near one unit of heat for one unit of electricity, but that does not make electricity automatically less expensive. A gas heater delivers only the fraction of its fuel input represented by its rated efficiency, and its fan and controls may add a separate electrical cost.

Step 3: Use delivered-heat formulas

These formulas let you compare options without inventing a generic cost-per-hour figure:

  • Electric cost per delivered Btu = (electricity price per kWh × 3,412) ÷ electric heater efficiency
  • Gas cost per delivered Btu = (gas price per therm × 100,000) ÷ gas heater efficiency + auxiliary electricity cost

For an electric resistance unit, use the manufacturer’s stated efficiency when available; do not substitute a heat-pump efficiency or a gas rating. For gas, use the exact model’s rated efficiency and add the cost of the blower or controls if the documentation provides it. Keep the units consistent when comparing the results.

Step 4: Add ownership costs

Fuel is only one line in the total-cost comparison. List these separately rather than hiding them in an assumed operating rate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Heater and thermostat purchase price.
  • Electrical circuit, wiring, disconnect, and panel work.
  • Gas piping, shutoff, regulator, venting, combustion-air work, and electrical connections.
  • Permits and inspections where your jurisdiction requires them.
  • Professional installation and commissioning.
  • Annual inspection, cleaning, and other maintenance.
  • Repairs or replacement of fans, igniters, controls, or vent components.

Obtain local quotes for these items. The available evidence does not support a universal installation price, and a quote can change substantially when a panel, gas main, roof penetration, or new vent route is involved.

Step 5: Model your actual use

Heating a garage for a two-hour project is a different load from maintaining a set temperature every day. Estimate the hours you will operate the heater, the thermostat setting, and how often the overhead door opens. Intermittent spot heating may favor a different design from whole-space heating, even when the fuel calculation points in the same direction.

Safety: combustion, carbon monoxide, and installation

Any fuel-burning heater can produce carbon monoxide (CO). The Consumer Product Safety Commission identifies incorrect installation, poor maintenance, blocked or defective venting, and misuse as hazards. Install and operate the appliance exactly as its manufacturer specifies, follow local building and mechanical codes, and have the heating system professionally inspected and serviced annually.

How combustion air affects risk

Open-combustion natural-draft equipment draws combustion air from the surrounding room. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that pressure conditions can cause backdrafting, pulling combustion products, including CO, into the building. Sealed-combustion and direct-vent appliances use a different combustion-air and exhaust arrangement; do not apply open-combustion assumptions to every gas model. The appliance listing and installation manual determine the required air path and vent configuration.

Venting and flue checks

A gas heater that requires venting must have the specified vent materials, routing, termination, slope, and clearances. Before each heating season, and whenever the system is serviced, check chimneys and flues for blockage, corrosion, disconnection, or loose connections. Do not improvise a vent, cap an opening, or share a flue unless the appliance instructions and code expressly allow it.

CO alarms

Install CO alarms in locations recommended by your local authority and the alarm manufacturer. CPSC describes an alarm as added protection, not a substitute for correct installation, proper use, and maintenance. An alarm cannot make an improperly vented or poorly maintained heater safe.

Garage-specific clearances and ignition sources

Garages can contain gasoline vapors, solvents, paints, and other flammable materials. The 2022 Oregon Mechanical Specialty Code illustrates the type of restriction that may apply, but it is a jurisdiction-specific example rather than a nationwide rule. In that code, appliances regulated by the code must be listed and labeled for their application. Ignition sources in private garages generally must be elevated at least 18 inches above the floor unless the appliance is listed as flammable-vapor-ignition-resistant. The code also specifies a 6-foot minimum installation height for appliances in private garages, subject to a stated vehicle-impact exception, and requires the manufacturer’s or listing clearances from combustible construction.

Do not use those Oregon numbers as a permit decision for another state or city. Verify the code adopted where you live, local amendments, the appliance listing, and the installation instructions. A licensed contractor or the local building department can confirm which requirements apply before work begins.

Electrical-heater safety

Portable resistance heaters

For a portable electric heater, CPSC says to plug the unit directly into a wall outlet, never into a power strip. Keep the cord out from under rugs and carpeting, maintain the clearances in the heater’s instructions, and place the unit where it cannot be struck by a vehicle or tipped by stored materials. Stop using a heater with a damaged plug, cord, housing, or overheating receptacle.

Permanently installed electric units

A hard-wired or permanently mounted heater still needs correct circuit sizing, overcurrent protection, grounding, disconnecting means, and installation under local electrical rules. The sources do not establish one universal circuit size; the required amperage depends on the heater’s rated load, voltage, duty, wiring method, and code requirements. Have an electrician verify panel capacity and voltage before buying the unit. Do not use an extension cord as a substitute for a required circuit.

Performance and comfort: what to compare

Fuel type alone does not tell you how quickly a garage warms, how evenly heat reaches the floor, or how comfortable the space feels. Compare the actual model’s rated heat output, control range, delivery method, fan operation, required clearances, venting, and documented sound level.

Air circulation versus radiant delivery

Fan-forced units move heated air through the room. Radiant units warm people, tools, and surfaces in their line of sight and may be useful when you occupy one work area rather than the entire garage. These are different outcomes, so do not treat local radiant warmth as equivalent to raising the temperature of all the air in the space.

Output and controls

Check the rated output in Btu per hour or watts, the available heat settings, thermostat compatibility, minimum and maximum operating temperatures, and whether the fan continues after the burner or element cycles off. A model with a wider control range may match changing loads more closely than a single-output unit. Verify that the thermostat is approved for the appliance and located where drafts, sunlight, and vehicle exhaust will not distort its reading.

Noise and placement

Blowers, burners, and sheet-metal enclosures can produce different noise levels. Use a manufacturer-documented sound rating when one is provided rather than assuming electric means silent or gas means loud. Placement affects air pattern, clearance, vehicle impact exposure, and access for service; follow the installation diagram exactly.

What size garage heater do you need?

Choose capacity from the garage’s heat loss and the heater’s rated output, not simply from floor area. Relevant factors include climate, insulation in the walls and ceiling, air leakage, slab and door condition, ceiling height, window area, the frequency of overhead-door openings, and the indoor temperature you want to maintain.

Use a heat-loss calculation

For a permanent system, ask a qualified HVAC professional to calculate the design heat loss for the structure and select a listed appliance whose output and controls match that load. Provide the garage dimensions, construction layers, insulation levels, door and window sizes, desired indoor temperature, and the cold outdoor design condition used locally. A heater that is too small may run continuously without meeting the set point; an oversized unit can cycle frequently and may distribute heat poorly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the model’s installation limits

  • Compare rated output with the calculated heat loss, not only the input rating.
  • Confirm the required voltage, amperage, gas pressure, vent diameter, combustion-air provisions, and clearances.
  • Verify that the appliance is listed for garage installation and for the fuels available at the property.
  • Check minimum and maximum mounting heights and whether the installation is protected from vehicle impact.
  • Leave access for inspection, filter or burner service, and emergency shutoff.

If you only need warmth at a bench for short periods, discuss a properly placed radiant or local-output solution instead of sizing a whole-garage system for continuous operation. That choice changes the comfort goal and the load calculation.

Installation process: a practical sequence

  1. Inspect the space. Record dimensions, insulation and air-sealing conditions, doors, windows, stored fuels, vehicle paths, and the intended thermostat location.
  2. Confirm the fuel and service. For electric, have an electrician verify voltage, available panel capacity, and the circuit required by the selected model. For gas, have a qualified installer verify fuel type, line capacity, pressure, shutoff location, vent route, combustion air, and any required electrical supply.
  3. Obtain the appliance documentation. Keep the installation manual, listing information, clearance diagram, wiring diagram, and maintenance schedule on site.
  4. Check the authority having jurisdiction. Ask the building or mechanical department which code edition, permits, inspections, garage clearances, ignition-source rules, and vehicle-impact protections apply. Do not assume the Oregon example applies in your location.
  5. Prepare the envelope. Seal obvious air leaks and improve insulation where practical before final sizing. These measures reduce the heat load but do not replace a calculation or justify changing a listed installation.
  6. Install the heater and controls. Follow the manufacturer’s mounting, clearance, wiring, fuel, vent, combustion-air, and thermostat instructions without substitutions.
  7. Commission the system. Test ignition or element operation, thermostat cycling, airflow, shutoffs, vent termination, and alarm placement. Confirm that no vehicle, storage item, or combustible material can enter the required clearance zone.
  8. Document maintenance. Record the installation date, model and serial information, service provider, inspection findings, and any replacement parts so future servicing follows the manufacturer’s schedule.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing a kWh price with a therm price

Problem: The units contain different amounts of heat. Correction: Convert both to Btu, divide by the actual equipment efficiency, and include auxiliary electricity.

Using a residential average as a garage forecast

Problem: A national household expenditure or fuel average does not describe your garage’s envelope, weather, equipment, or thermostat use. Correction: Use your utility bills, local rates, calculated heat loss, and expected operating hours.

Assuming every gas heater has the same venting

Problem: Open-combustion, natural-draft, sealed-combustion, and direct-vent designs have different air and exhaust requirements. Correction: Follow the exact model listing and manual, and have the installation inspected.

Putting a portable heater on a power strip

Problem: The strip or its connections can overheat under the heater’s load. Correction: Plug directly into a suitable wall outlet and keep the cord out from under rugs or carpeting.

Ignoring vehicle and flammable-vapor exposure

Problem: A heater can be struck by a vehicle or become an ignition source near stored fuels and solvents. Correction: Choose a garage-listed appliance, respect mounting and clearance requirements, and keep flammable materials outside the protected zone.

Buying by floor area alone

Problem: Two garages with the same floor area can have very different heat losses. Correction: Use a heat-loss calculation and compare the appliance’s rated output, controls, and installation limits.

Choosing between electric and gas: a decision framework

Electric resistance is often the simpler fit when

  • The garage has adequate electrical capacity or a practical route for a new circuit.
  • You want to avoid onsite combustion, gas piping, and combustion venting.
  • Use is intermittent and the local electricity rate produces an acceptable delivered-heat cost.
  • A listed wall-mounted or portable unit can meet the calculated load and clearance requirements.

Gas may fit when

  • A correctly sized gas connection and compliant vent route already exist or can be installed economically.
  • The selected listed appliance matches the garage’s heat-loss requirement and fuel type.
  • You accept the added design, inspection, and maintenance obligations of combustion equipment.
  • Local fuel and electricity rates, after efficiency and auxiliary power are included, favor gas for your expected hours of operation.

Either option may be wrong until the envelope is addressed

A drafty overhead door, unsealed penetrations, missing insulation, or frequent door openings can dominate the load. Improve practical air sealing and insulation first, then recheck the required capacity. Do not use a heater to compensate for a dangerous vent, an overloaded circuit, or a garage that is not approved for the appliance.

Questions to answer before buying

  • What are my current electricity and gas rates, including delivery charges?
  • How many hours per week will the garage be heated, and will I heat the entire space or one work area?
  • What heat-loss calculation and rated output does the model support?
  • Is the appliance listed for garage installation and compatible with my fuel and voltage?
  • What circuit, gas line, vent, combustion-air, mounting-height, and clearance work is required?
  • Which permits and inspections apply in my jurisdiction?
  • Who will install, commission, and annually service the system?
  • Where will CO alarms be located if any fuel-burning appliance is installed?

Use the answers to request comparable bids that separate equipment, installation, permits, electrical or gas work, venting, controls, and expected maintenance. A clear scope makes the delivered-heat and total-ownership comparison more reliable than a fuel-only guess.

Bottom line for a U.S. homeowner

Choose the heater that meets the calculated garage load, is listed and code-compliant for its location, and has the lowest acceptable total cost for your actual use. Electric resistance avoids combustion and venting but can require substantial electrical work and may cost more or less to operate depending on local rates. Gas can be economical where fuel service and rates support it, but it adds combustion-air, venting, CO, clearance, inspection, and maintenance responsibilities. Compare delivered heat with your own rates, obtain installation-specific quotes, and treat safety and code compliance as requirements rather than optional features.
