Electric vs. Diesel Construction Equipment: Costs, Performance, and Best Uses

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery-electric construction equipment is already workable for several jobs, but it is not automatically cheaper or more productive than diesel. Electric machines usually cost more to buy and may need chargers or electrical upgrades. In return, they can reduce energy and routine-service costs, eliminate exhaust at the machine, and operate more quietly. The financially and operationally better choice depends on machine size, duty cycle, shift pattern, local energy prices, charging capacity, battery and resale risk, and how consistently the equipment is used.

Compare the complete cost over a stated service life—not the purchase price alone—then test whether the machine can meet your actual shift and charging requirements. The evidence below includes field deployments and modeled comparisons, but no single result applies to every excavator, loader, contractor, or site.

What you are really comparing

An electric machine replaces the diesel engine and fuel system with a battery, electric motors, power electronics and charging equipment. Many working systems, including hydraulics, remain broadly familiar. That means the decision is not simply “new technology versus old technology”; it is a comparison of energy supply, uptime, capital, service support and site constraints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diesel has a mature fueling and dealer network and can usually be refueled quickly wherever fuel trucks or tanks are available. Battery-electric equipment shifts part of that logistics problem to electrical capacity, charger placement and charging schedules. A machine that fits the workload but cannot recharge between shifts is not a productive asset.

Total cost of ownership: the numbers that matter

Build a cost model for the exact machine class and work cycle. Include each of the following over a defined holding period and number of operating hours:

  • Purchase price for equivalent-size equipment.
  • Financing cost and interest.
  • Charger hardware, design, installation, trenching, transformer work and any electrical-capacity upgrades.
  • Diesel consumption or electricity consumption measured or estimated for the actual duty cycle, including idle time.
  • Demand charges, time-of-use electricity rates and charging losses where applicable.
  • Scheduled maintenance, consumables, tires, hydraulic service and technician labor.
  • Battery warranty coverage, health testing and the possible cost and timing of a replacement battery.
  • Downtime, spare-machine requirements and any battery-swap equipment.
  • Expected resale value at the end of the planned holding period.

Use local prices and state the assumptions beside every percentage. A short, high-utilization project can produce a different result from a lightly used machine held for ten years.

What one modeled loader comparison found

EECA and MartinJenkins modeled a 20-tonne electric loader against a diesel equivalent over eight years and 16,000 operating hours. The model estimated 5% lower total cost of ownership for the electric loader at 16,000 hours. It included energy, maintenance, the charger and installation, used 8% purchase-finance interest, 2022 New Zealand commercial electricity rates, diesel at NZ$1.90 per litre, and a fast charger shared across 2.5 machines. The supplier vehicle quotes were dated 2023, and the model assumed no battery replacement. The result is a scenario, not a current quote or a market-wide average. See the EECA electric-loader case study for the source assumptions.

Within that same model, electricity and fuel spending was about 73% lower for the electric loader and maintenance about 11% lower. Those percentages only describe the modeled assumptions; changing rates, utilization, charger sharing or battery costs changes the outcome.

A field operating-cost comparison with a size mismatch

EECA’s Leach & Co. case reported roughly 40% lower fuel costs after using a 20-tonne electric loader in place of a 15-tonne diesel loader. Because the machines were different sizes, this is an operating case rather than a controlled, like-for-like test. It is useful evidence that energy costs can fall in practice, but it should not be used as a universal saving percentage.

Purchase-price observations

EECA’s 2024 decarbonisation report records interviewees’ observations that electric construction machines capable of most of a full day’s work generally cost two to three times comparable diesel machines at publication time, with some instances reaching five times. These are market observations gathered through interviews, not audited price benchmarks. The same report says the battery can represent 40–60% of an electric machine’s total cost. Ask for a current quote, battery warranty and financing terms for the specific model rather than applying those ranges automatically.

Charging, power and uptime

Charging is part of the production plan. Confirm the available connection, charger output, charging window, number of machines sharing the equipment and what happens when a shift runs long.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: the EECA loader setup

In the EECA case, a 90 kW charger took four hours to fully charge the loader for an eight-hour shift. Operators could top up during breaks. This describes that loader and its configuration, not every electric excavator or wheel loader. A different battery, charger, ambient temperature or duty cycle will change the time.

A practical site-power check

  1. Measure the work cycle. Record operating hours, idle hours, attachment use, travel and the highest-load tasks for representative shifts.
  2. Obtain the machine’s usable battery capacity and charging curve. Ask the manufacturer how much energy is available in the normal operating window, not only the nominal pack capacity.
  3. Map charging windows. Identify overnight, lunch-break and shift-change opportunities and whether another machine will occupy the charger.
  4. Have the electrical service assessed. An electrician or utility representative should confirm available capacity, protection, cable routes, transformer needs and permitting.
  5. Set a contingency. Define a safe reduced-power mode, mobile charging option, battery swap or backup machine for an unexpected long shift or charger outage.
  6. Price the tariff correctly. Include energy, fixed charges and demand charges at the times the equipment will charge.

Eric Souchon, chief executive of Leach & Co., summarized the planning issue in the EECA case study: “Understanding the electricity capacity you have available on site is critical to the whole process.” Treat that as a project-planning requirement, not a substitute for a site electrical assessment.

Performance and productivity evidence

Electric drive systems can deliver the required digging, lifting and travel performance, but useful runtime depends on battery size and the intensity of those tasks. Compare cycle times, breakout force, hydraulic flow, lifting limits and attachment requirements for the exact configuration.

Three years of contractor monitoring

TNO monitored six 17-tonne mobile excavators and one 35-tonne crawler excavator for three years at seven contractors working in forestry, rail maintenance and demolition. The Construction Site of Tomorrow project reports successful deployment across those applications. Early configurations needed battery swaps in some work, while larger optional battery configurations allowed near-continuous operation without those swaps.

The TNO page reports annual savings of approximately 21 tonnes of CO₂ and 18 kilograms of NOx for its monitored mobile machine, and 34 tonnes of CO₂ and 105 kilograms of NOx for its crawler machine. These are project-specific estimates. In one passage the page labels a machine “mobile crane” even though the project description concerns excavators; verify the underlying report before using that label in a formal specification or claim.

Productivity questions to put in a demonstration

  • Can the machine complete the longest planned shift without a charge or swap?
  • What is the measured energy use per hour while digging, loading, travelling and idling?
  • Does fast charging reduce the available operating window or require a lower state-of-charge limit?
  • Can the hydraulic system run the attachments you actually use at the required flow and pressure?
  • What happens to range and charging time in cold, hot, wet or dusty conditions?
  • Is a dealer technician available during the hours and in the region where the machine will work?

Emissions and noise: separate the claims

Battery-electric equipment produces no exhaust emissions at the machine while it is operating. That matters where workers or the public are close to the equipment and where local rules restrict combustion emissions. It does not mean the equipment has zero lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions.

Whole-life emissions include electricity generation, battery production, manufacturing, transport, maintenance and end-of-life treatment. The result depends strongly on the electricity mix and the machine’s lifetime utilization. SINTEF found substantially lower total greenhouse-gas emissions in the Norwegian cases it studied. TNO reports emissions savings for its monitored Dutch machines and describes the electricity-mix context on its project page. Use the geography and assumptions when presenting those findings.

Electric machines are generally quieter because they lack a running diesel engine, but the remaining hydraulic, cooling, travel and attachment noise still matters. Verify the measured sound level and site-specific requirements rather than promising silent operation.

Where electric equipment is a strong candidate

Electric machines deserve early consideration when their operational advantages have a clear value:

  • Indoor work: zero machine exhaust reduces the need to manage diesel fumes in enclosed spaces.
  • Underground construction: eliminating tailpipe emissions can reduce ventilation demand, subject to the project’s safety rules.
  • Emission-controlled urban areas: local restrictions may make zero-exhaust equipment easier to permit or deploy.
  • Noise-sensitive work: residential areas, hospitals, schools, parks and night work can benefit from lower equipment noise.
  • Predictable shifts: regular hours and known breaks make overnight or opportunity charging easier to schedule.
  • High utilization: more operating hours spread the higher capital and charger costs over more productive work and expose energy savings sooner.

Volvo Construction Equipment identifies low-emission zones, noise-sensitive areas, underground spaces and indoor environments as potential applications, with manufacturer examples including a pressurized underground rail project, a London emissions-controlled demonstration and landscaping inside the Eden Project biomes. These are manufacturer case examples, not independent performance tests; details are available in Volvo CE’s electric-construction guide.

Where diesel may remain the practical choice

Diesel can be the lower-risk option when shifts are long or unpredictable, the site is remote, grid capacity is inadequate, or charging would interrupt production. A diesel machine may also fit a contractor that relies on a mature dealer, rental and used-equipment network and cannot justify dedicated electrical work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are screening factors, not blanket rules. A remote project with a reliable generator and high fuel cost could favor a different answer, while an urban project with expensive grid upgrades could favor diesel. Compare the actual machine, duty cycle and site logistics.

Maintenance, battery life and resale

Electric motors generally need less routine service than diesel engines because there is no engine oil, oil filter or diesel after-treatment system. Hydraulic systems, undercarriage, tires, cooling circuits and attachments still require normal inspection and maintenance. Electric equipment is not maintenance-free.

EECA’s 2024 report identifies the large battery as the unfamiliar component. Interviewees raised concerns about battery care, service support, battery life and residual value in relatively new operating conditions. Before purchase, request:

  • Battery warranty length, coverage limits and the state-of-health threshold for a warranty claim.
  • Routine battery inspection and thermal-management requirements.
  • Diagnostic reports that can be supplied to a future buyer.
  • Expected replacement price, lead time and installation process.
  • High-voltage safety training and the dealer’s emergency response time.
  • Parts availability and support after the initial warranty period.
  • Comparable used-machine sales or a guaranteed residual-value arrangement, if offered.

Battery replacement is the largest uncertainty in long-life cost models. If a model assumes no replacement, show a second scenario with a replacement during the planned ownership period and a third with lower resale value. Do not hide that risk inside a single average maintenance figure.

Current examples and availability caveats

Battery-electric machines listed by Caterpillar

A Caterpillar page dated June 20, 2025 lists four battery-electric products: the Cat 301.9 Mini Excavator, Cat 906 Compact Wheel Loader, Cat 320 Excavator and Cat 950 GC Wheel Loader. The page describes flexible charging and zero exhaust emissions. Product specifications, sales regions, delivery timing and dealer stock must be confirmed locally; the listing does not establish that every model is orderable in every market. See Caterpillar’s sustainability page.

Hyundai HX230e concept

Hyundai Construction Equipment announced the HX230e on April 7, 2025 as a concept. The company states a 25-tonne machine, a 420 kWh battery, up to eight hours of autonomy and an optional 503 kWh battery, with production expected by the end of 2027. It is a future manufacturer-stated concept and schedule, not evidence of a currently orderable production machine. The announcement is at Hyundai Construction Equipment Europe.

Electric and diesel compared by decision axis

Axis Battery-electric Diesel Check before deciding
Upfront investment Often higher; charger and electrical work can add cost Established purchase and fueling setup Equivalent-machine quotes, installation, incentives and financing
Energy cost Depends on tariff, demand charges and charging schedule Depends on diesel price and consumption Local rates and measured consumption for the duty cycle
Maintenance No diesel engine oil or filter service; battery and high-voltage support matter Engine and exhaust-system service with a familiar dealer ecosystem OEM schedule, warranty, parts and technician availability
Runtime and productivity Depends on battery capacity, duty cycle, charging and possible swaps Refueling is generally flexible where fuel is available Shift duration, idle time, task intensity, charging windows and backup plan
Emissions and noise Zero machine exhaust during operation; electricity determines lifecycle emissions Exhaust emissions and typically greater operating noise Separate on-site exhaust from lifecycle emissions and check local rules
Residual value Battery health and a developing second-hand market add uncertainty Used-equipment market is more established in many regions Resale evidence, battery-health reporting and expected holding period

A purchase process that limits surprises

  1. Define the job. Write down material, attachment, cycle time, working hours, travel distance, site temperature and the longest uninterrupted shift.
  2. Shortlist equivalent machines. Compare operating weight, lift or digging limits, hydraulic specifications and attachment compatibility before comparing energy systems.
  3. Collect operating data. Use telematics or shift logs from a comparable diesel machine and obtain electric-machine energy data for the same tasks.
  4. Design the charging system. Get a written electrical-capacity assessment, charger quotation, installation schedule and utility approval requirements.
  5. Model three cases. Use base, high-utilization and difficult cases that vary electricity and diesel prices, charging access, battery replacement and resale value.
  6. Run a representative demonstration. Test the machine on the actual material, attachments and shift pattern; record production, energy, charging and downtime.
  7. Audit support. Confirm technician training, high-voltage isolation procedures, parts stock, software support and response times.
  8. Set a go/no-go rule. Proceed only when the machine meets the required production rate, the site can supply energy safely and the modeled cost remains acceptable under the difficult case.

Questions to put in every supplier proposal

  • What is the usable battery capacity and expected energy consumption for my stated duty cycle?
  • What charging power, connector, installation and protection equipment are required?
  • How does charging behavior change at high or low temperatures?
  • What battery state-of-health data will be provided at service intervals and resale?
  • What are the warranty exclusions for battery, charger, software and high-voltage components?
  • What is the expected lead time for a replacement battery, inverter or charger?
  • Which dealer locations can perform high-voltage service, and what is the response time?
  • What production and runtime data support the claimed autonomy?
  • What happens if the machine arrives with less than the expected battery capacity or the charger is unavailable?
  • Can the supplier provide references using the same machine class and duty cycle?

Bottom-line decision

Choose battery-electric equipment when the work has predictable shifts, practical charging access, high utilization and a clear value from zero on-site exhaust or lower noise. Validate the electrical connection and include battery and resale scenarios before signing.

Choose diesel when remote or variable work makes charging unreliable, when long shifts leave no practical charging window, or when the required electrical upgrades and support arrangements outweigh the operating savings. In either case, base the decision on measured productivity and a local total-cost model rather than a headline purchase price or a generic percentage.
