Electric Fireplace Insert vs. Gas Fireplace Insert: Costs, Heat, and Installation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an electric insert when avoiding gas piping and combustion venting is the priority; choose a gas insert when you have suitable fuel, venting, and a need for higher rated heat output. The practical decision depends on the fireplace opening, electrical capacity, fuel availability, local code, and the complete installed quote—not on a blanket claim that one fuel is always cheaper or warmer.

Heat figures are model-specific. For example, Regency lists its Ei29LCD electric insert at 5,000 BTU on 120 volts (1,400 watts) or 9,500 BTU on 240 volts (2,800 watts), while the separate Regency U31 gas insert manual lists 30,000 Btu/h. Those are different products, not a controlled comparison. Use the exact model manual and sizing guidance for your room.

Electric vs. gas at a glance

Factor Electric insert Gas insert
Example rated heat Regency Ei29LCD: 5,000 BTU at 120 V/1,400 W or 9,500 BTU at 240 V/2,800 W. Regency U31 manual: 30,000 Btu/h.
Combustion venting The cited Ei29LCD is described by its manufacturer as no-vent. Requires the fuel connection and venting specified for the exact model.
Primary site checks Opening dimensions, clearances, circuit capacity, voltage, and finish details. Fuel type, gas supply, vent route, clearances, liner or chimney condition, and code.
Installed price evidence No current, comparable all-in price was established. No current, comparable all-in price was established.
Operating cost Model input multiplied by your electricity tariff and actual run time. Model input multiplied by your natural-gas or propane tariff and actual run time.

The table is a decision framework, not a promise of room performance. Heat delivered to a room also depends on insulation, air leakage, climate, thermostat settings, appliance placement, and whether the insert is supplemental or primary heat.

How much heat can each type provide?

Electric output varies with voltage and model

The cited Ei29LCD has two electrical configurations: 5,000 BTU with a 120-volt, 1,400-watt input, or 9,500 BTU with a 240-volt, 2,800-watt input. A 240-volt version may require a dedicated circuit and different wiring, so do not assume an existing receptacle can support it. Confirm voltage, amperage, breaker size, plug or hard-wire requirements, and clearance rules in the current installation manual.

An electric insert converts electricity to heat at the appliance, but its listed BTU figure is still a product rating rather than a guarantee that a particular room will reach a target temperature. A large, drafty room can feel under-heated even when the appliance operates normally. Ask the manufacturer or installer what room area and insulation assumptions support the model’s published guidance.

Gas ratings are also model-specific

The cited U31 gas-insert manual lists 30,000 Btu/h. That figure cannot be compared directly with the electric examples as a universal electric-versus-gas result: the products, configurations, and test conditions differ. Gas models may also have minimum and maximum input ratings, altitude adjustments, and fuel-specific requirements. Read the manual for the exact natural-gas or propane version before ordering.

Use output ratings for sizing, not marketing labels

Before selecting either type, document the room’s floor area, ceiling height, connected spaces, insulation level, window area, climate, and whether the insert will supplement another heating system. Have a qualified installer reconcile that information with the manufacturer’s sizing instructions. Oversizing can cause short cycling or uncomfortable temperatures; undersizing can leave the room cold and encourage unsafe attempts to modify the appliance.

Installation: what changes between electric and gas

Electric installation requirements

  1. Measure the opening. Record width at the front and rear, height, depth, hearth dimensions, and any irregular masonry. Compare every dimension with the insert’s cut sheet, including required air space.
  2. Verify the circuit. Identify the circuit serving the proposed location, its breaker rating, conductor size, outlet position, and whether other loads share it. A 240-volt configuration may require new wiring from the panel.
  3. Confirm clearances and finish materials. The manual controls spacing from combustibles, mantel projections, trim, flooring, and side walls. Do not infer clearance from another model that looks similar.
  4. Prepare the cavity. Remove or isolate the old appliance as specified, repair masonry or framing, and provide a level, load-bearing surface. A no-vent appliance may not need a chimney connection, but the existing opening still has to meet the product’s installation instructions.
  5. Install and commission. Connect power as directed, secure the unit, fit the surround, test every heat and control function, and keep the manual and electrical information with the home records.

No-vent does not mean no requirements. Electrical protection, clearances, structural support, and local electrical rules still apply. A plug-in unit is not automatically safe in an undersized cavity or on an overloaded circuit.

Gas installation requirements

  1. Identify the fuel. Confirm natural gas or propane before purchasing. Orifices, regulators, pressures, and conversion procedures are model-specific.
  2. Assess the existing fireplace and chimney. The installer must determine whether the opening, hearth, smoke chamber, and chimney can accept the listed vent system. A damaged or incorrectly sized chimney can add repair or relining work.
  3. Plan the gas route. Verify meter or tank capacity, shutoff location, pipe sizing, sediment trap requirements, and access for service. Never run an unapproved flexible line or conceal a connection contrary to code.
  4. Install the specified venting. Use only the vent components, termination locations, liners, and vertical or horizontal configurations allowed by the manual. A decorative gas log arrangement is not interchangeable with a sealed insert vent system.
  5. Complete safety and combustion checks. The qualified installer should test gas pressure, leak-tightness, ignition, flame appearance, vent operation, carbon-monoxide protection, and any required inspection before handover.

The U31 manual is the controlling starting point for that model and references applicable gas-installation requirements. Local building, mechanical, fuel-gas, and fire codes can impose additional rules. Confirm who obtains permits and who schedules inspection before work begins.

What installation costs actually include

There is no defensible national installed-price winner from the available figures. The final bill can include the appliance, demolition, masonry repair, electrical or gas work, venting, chimney work, surround fabrication, permits, inspection, delivery, and commissioning. Two homes with identical inserts can have very different totals because their openings and utilities differ.

Historic chimney-cost context

A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency FAQ gives a historic chimney-related installation range of $600–$1,200. The publication year is not established on the retrieved page, and the figure is not a current all-in price for either an electric or gas insert. Treat it only as historical context for one part of a project; do not use it as a 2026 quote.

What current cost guidance does—and does not—say

An Angi 2026 cost guide identifies room area, desired heat output, and professional installation as cost drivers, but the available result does not establish separate, substantiated totals for electric and gas inserts. A contractor’s itemized proposal is therefore more useful than a generic online range.

Request comparable, itemized quotes

Ask each installer to price the same scope and identify exclusions. Require separate lines for:

  • Insert, surround, trim, remote, and accessories.
  • Removal, disposal, and preparation of the existing fireplace.
  • New circuit, receptacle, disconnect, or panel work for electric.
  • Gas branch line, shutoff, regulator, conversion, or propane equipment for gas.
  • Chimney inspection, liner, cap, repairs, and vent components.
  • Masonry, framing, hearth, mantel, drywall, painting, and finish work.
  • Permit fees, inspection charges, delivery, startup, and commissioning.
  • Warranty terms, service access, and the price of later maintenance.

Have the installer state assumptions about concealed damage, asbestos or lead-containing materials, chimney access, and electrical-panel capacity. Those assumptions determine whether a low initial bid is genuinely comparable.

How to calculate running cost in your home

Electricity calculation

Use the appliance’s input in kilowatts, multiply by hours operated, then multiply by your utility’s delivered price per kilowatt-hour:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

running cost = input kW × hours of use × electricity rate per kWh

For the Ei29LCD examples, 1,400 watts is 1.4 kW and 2,800 watts is 2.8 kW. A two-hour session would therefore consume 2.8 kWh at the 120-volt configuration or 5.6 kWh at the 240-volt configuration, before applying your tariff. These are energy-use calculations, not a claim about a particular bill; taxes, demand charges, tiered rates, and thermostat cycling can change the result.

Gas calculation

Use the exact input rating, the appliance’s actual duty cycle, and your gas or propane price. For a model rated at 30,000 Btu/h, one hour at full input is 30,000 Btu. Convert the fuel’s billed units using your supplier’s stated Btu content, then apply the unit price:

running cost = fuel used × local gas or propane rate

Do not calculate from the visible flame alone. A thermostat may cycle the burner, and pilot, blower, venting, and service costs can affect ownership. Propane prices also vary more by delivery timing and tank arrangements than a simple per-unit comparison suggests.

Why local prices decide the result

The Electric Power Research Institute notes that an electric fireplace can be less expensive to operate depending on local electricity and gas prices. That means a national ranking is misleading without a location, tariff, input rating, run time, and duty cycle. Gather a recent utility bill and the manufacturer’s input data before comparing annual costs.

Fit, controls, and everyday use

Electric strengths and trade-offs

  • No combustion fuel line or flue connection for a model designated no-vent.
  • Usually simpler installation when the opening and circuit already comply.
  • Heat output is limited by the electrical configuration and circuit capacity.
  • Operation during a power outage is generally unavailable unless the home has suitable backup power.
  • Controls, flame effects, fan noise, and thermostat behavior vary by model; inspect them in the manual rather than assuming they are standard.

Gas strengths and trade-offs

  • Potentially higher rated heat output, illustrated by the 30,000 Btu/h U31 example.
  • Requires compatible fuel, approved venting, combustion-air provisions where specified, and professional commissioning.
  • Chimney or liner condition can add work before the insert is usable.
  • Fuel supply, vent termination, gas pressure, and annual safety checks remain part of ownership.
  • Operation may still depend on electricity for ignition, controls, or a blower, depending on the model.

Safety, permits, and maintenance

Electrical safety

  • Use the specified circuit and protection; do not use an extension cord or power strip unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
  • Keep combustibles outside every clearance zone, including rugs, trim, curtains, and mantel decorations.
  • Install over-current protection and grounding exactly as required by the electrical code and manual.
  • Have a licensed electrician correct warm outlets, nuisance breaker trips, aluminum-wiring concerns, or undersized conductors before installation.

Gas and carbon-monoxide safety

  • Use a qualified gas-appliance installer to connect, pressure-test, and commission the unit.
  • Install carbon-monoxide alarms as required by local law and the appliance instructions, and test them regularly.
  • Keep the vent termination clear of windows, doors, air intakes, walkways, and snow accumulation according to the manual.
  • Stop using the appliance if you smell gas, see soot, observe an unstable flame, or hear unusual combustion noise; follow the fuel supplier’s emergency procedure.

Permits and inspections

Permit rules depend on jurisdiction and the scope of work. Electrical circuits, gas piping, structural changes, chimney liners, and vent terminations may each trigger different permits. Put responsibility in writing: the contract should name the permit holder, inspection schedule, required certificates, and the remedy if work fails inspection.

A practical decision process

  1. Start with the site. Measure the opening and inspect the hearth, chimney, framing, and available utilities.
  2. Define the heating job. Decide whether you need supplemental comfort, backup heat, or a major room-heating source, then document room and building conditions.
  3. Shortlist compliant models. Compare only units approved for your opening, fuel, vent configuration, voltage, and clearances.
  4. Obtain equal-scope quotes. Give each installer the same specification and require the itemized categories listed above.
  5. Compare operating cost locally. Use your electricity, gas, or propane tariffs and realistic hours, not national averages.
  6. Verify the installer. Confirm licensing, insurance, appliance experience, permit handling, commissioning, warranty support, and service availability.
  7. Keep the documentation. Save the model and serial numbers, manuals, permits, inspection approvals, wiring or gas diagrams, and maintenance records.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Comparing unmatched BTU numbers

A 5,000-BTU electric model and a 30,000-Btu/h gas model do not prove that gas is six times better in a room. They are different products with different installation and test conditions. Compare models intended for the same space and operating role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming an existing chimney is ready

Old masonry, liners, caps, and clearances may not satisfy a new gas insert. Schedule an inspection before ordering and budget for concealed defects.

Treating electric as universally plug-and-play

Voltage, amperage, circuit sharing, cavity dimensions, and combustible clearances still govern installation. A 240-volt model can require substantial electrical work.

Using a generic annual-cost estimate

Without local tariffs, input ratings, run time, and cycling assumptions, an annual number is false precision. Use your own bill and the formulas above.

Accepting a vague quote

A quote that says installation included may omit permits, venting, chimney repair, finish work, or electrical upgrades. Make every inclusion and exclusion explicit before signing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which insert is right for your project?

Select an electric insert when your priority is avoiding fuel piping and combustion venting, the model’s rated output suits the room, and the required circuit can be provided economically. Select a gas insert when the property has suitable natural gas or propane, a compliant vent path, and a justified need for the model’s higher rated output. In both cases, the exact manual, local code, and itemized installation quote control the decision.
