Efflorescence is the white powder or crust left when water carries soluble salts through brick, block, pavers, or concrete and then evaporates. Start with a dry, nonmetal brush; use water only as a gentle escalation; reserve chemical treatment for a confirmed, compatible substrate. If the deposit returns, the priority is finding the moisture source—such as rain entry, cracks, failed flashing, condensation, or ground contact—rather than repeatedly cleaning the symptom.
What efflorescence is and why it appears
Efflorescence is usually a white deposit of soluble salts and bases on masonry or concrete. Three conditions have to coincide: soluble material in or behind the substrate, water to dissolve and transport it, and a route that lets the solution reach the surface. When the water evaporates, the salts remain as powder, crystals, or a harder crust. As the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) puts it, “If any one of these conditions is eliminated, efflorescence will not occur.”

In cement-based masonry, calcium hydroxide can move with water and react with carbon dioxide at the surface, forming calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate is also a common deposit on concrete. The exact chemistry varies by material, so appearance alone cannot identify every white mark.

Do not assume every white substance is efflorescence. Paint residue, mortar smears, hard-water scale, mold, and other contamination can look similar. A loose, dry powder that follows damp paths is more consistent with efflorescence than a greasy film or a biological growth. If you cannot identify the material or the substrate is valuable, obtain a masonry assessment before using acid or abrasive equipment.

Inspect the surface before choosing a cleaning method
Identify the substrate and finish
Record whether you are cleaning clay brick, concrete block, a paver, uncolored concrete, colored concrete, or a finished masonry surface. Concrete and masonry do not all react the same way to acids, pressure, or scrubbing. Colored concrete deserves particular caution because acid can change its appearance.
Study the deposit pattern
- Loose and dusty: begin with dry brushing.
- Thin film after brushing: try clean water and light scrubbing.
- Hard crust: use only a controlled escalation after testing a hidden area.
- Broad, even deposits on new masonry: normal early water loss may be involved, and the material may weather away.
- Streaks below joints, corners, or isolated wet areas: investigate water entry, rather than treating the pattern as a simple cleaning problem.
Take a photograph before work and note whether the area is dry or damp. Check the same location after rain and after a dry spell. A deposit that repeatedly reappears in one location is useful evidence about water movement.
How do I remove efflorescence?
Use the least aggressive method that suits the identified surface. Work on a small, inconspicuous test area first, allow it to dry, and compare the result with the surrounding finish.
- Brush off loose material while dry. Use a stiff nylon or other stiff fiber masonry brush. Brush away from clean areas and collect the powder so it is not redistributed. Avoid a steel wire brush on masonry: broken or shed metal particles can remain in the surface and later rust, creating a second stain.
- Try clean water and light scrubbing. If a dry brush leaves a thin residue, dampen a small area with clean water and scrub lightly with the same nonmetal brush. Use only enough water to remove the deposit. Excess water can enter porous masonry and contribute to another cycle of salt movement.
- Escalate to limited waterblasting only when appropriate. The Concrete Society lists scrubbing with water and light waterblasting as possible approaches. Keep pressure and water volume as low as practical, maintain a consistent distance, and avoid forcing water into open joints, cracks, or wall edges. Stop if the surface erodes, the finish changes, or water begins entering the assembly.
- Consider a compatible chemical treatment only for a resistant deposit. Some salts become water-insoluble and may require a dilute acid treatment. Acid is not a universal efflorescence solution. It can alter concrete appearance, especially on colored concrete, and acid-based cleaners can affect acid-sensitive materials such as concrete, limestone, marble, and travertine. Read the specific product directions, confirm that the substrate is listed, dilute exactly as directed, and test discreetly before treating a visible area.
- Rinse and protect surrounding materials. Chemical and physical cleaning can damage glass, metal, wood, landscaping, adjacent masonry, sealants, and coatings. Mask or wet-protect nearby surfaces as the cleaner instructions require. Rinse with clean water as directed, collect runoff where necessary, and keep people away from the work area until residues and hazards are gone.
Never mix cleaners or improvise stronger acid concentrations. If the deposit is extensive, the surface is historic or highly finished, or water is visibly entering the wall, use a qualified masonry professional.

Choosing among removal methods
| Method | Best fit | Aggression and main risk | Decision point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry stiff nylon or fiber brushing | Loose powder or light crystals on masonry and concrete | Lowest aggression; a steel brush can leave rust-causing particles | Use first when the deposit is dry and loose |
| Clean water with light scrubbing | Residue that remains after dry brushing | Low aggression; added moisture can feed recurrence | Use a small amount of water and allow the area to dry before judging the result |
| Light waterblasting | Suitable, sound surfaces with deposits that resist hand scrubbing | Greater risk of erosion and water penetration | Use conservative pressure only after testing the substrate |
| Dilute acid treatment | Some water-insoluble salts on a confirmed compatible substrate | Highest chemical risk; can change color or damage acid-sensitive materials | Follow the product and substrate instructions exactly and test first |
The right comparison is not simply “which cleaner is strongest.” Consider whether the deposit dissolves in water, how sensitive the substrate and its color are, what nearby materials could be harmed, and whether the moisture source has been corrected.
Why does efflorescence keep coming back?
Cleaning removes the visible salts but does not remove the ingredients that produced them. Recurrence means water is probably still dissolving material and carrying it toward the surface, although the exact cause requires inspection. Potential sources include:
- Wind-driven rain entering porous brick, block, or pavers.
- Incomplete or deteriorated mortar joints.
- Cracks in masonry, concrete, sealants, or adjacent construction.
- Weak, damaged, or poorly detailed flashing.
- Roof drainage or gutters discharging onto the wall.
- Interior vapor condensation in a cold wall or enclosed space.
- Construction exposure before wall tops were covered.
- Ground moisture affecting walls that contact soil or lack adequate drainage.
Inspect roof edges, gutters, downspouts, copings, wall tops, joints, penetrations, flashing transitions, cracks, and the ground line. Look for dampness, peeling finishes, moss, staining, or deposits that align with a joint or opening. These clues identify where to investigate; they do not by themselves prove a particular defect.
Use the pattern as a diagnostic clue
CMHA notes that uniformly distributed deposits on new masonry can reflect normal water loss and may weather away. Concentrated streaks below joints or deposits limited to one area are more suggestive of localized water entry and corrective work. Treat both observations as clues, not a diagnosis. A building professional may need to trace the path of water behind the visible surface.

Preventing new deposits
Moisture reduction is the central control strategy. Repair the path that allows water to reach soluble material, then clean remaining deposits with the least aggressive suitable method.
- Keep roof drainage, gutters, and downspouts from wetting masonry.
- Repair cracked joints, failed sealants, and openings that admit wind-driven rain.
- Check flashing and transitions at roofs, windows, copings, and wall intersections.
- Address ground contact and drainage where walls meet soil.
- During construction, protect masonry materials from rain and cover unfinished wall tops.
- Allow new masonry and concrete to dry as intended before trapping moisture behind finishes.
No single coating or cleaning step guarantees permanent prevention. A coating that traps moisture, is incompatible with the substrate, or is applied before the source is repaired can leave the underlying problem unresolved.
Surface-specific cautions
Brick and concrete block
Use a stiff nylon or fiber brush rather than steel. Pay close attention to mortar joints and wall tops, where water can enter and travel behind the face. Keep rinsing controlled so porous units do not absorb unnecessary water.

Pavers and hardscape
Check the joints, edges, drainage falls, and contact with soil. A deposit that follows a low point or edge may reflect water movement through the bedding or adjacent ground. Avoid flooding the area during cleaning, and verify that runoff will not carry cleaner onto plants or other finishes.

The powder returns within days
Stop repeating the cleaning cycle. Photograph the recurrence, check for recent rain or irrigation, and inspect drainage, joints, cracks, flashing, and ground contact. Continued moisture movement is the issue to resolve.
Water does not remove the crust
Some salts become water-insoluble. Confirm that the deposit is actually efflorescence, then review a substrate-compatible dilute acid option with a controlled test. Do not increase concentration or dwell time beyond the product instructions.
A wire brush left dark or orange marks
Embedded metal particles can rust and stain masonry. Discontinue the wire brush, document the affected area, and seek advice on removing the secondary stain without further damaging the substrate.

Acid changed the surface color
Rinse and stop further chemical treatment according to the product directions. Colored or acid-sensitive surfaces may require professional restoration; additional acid can enlarge the affected area.
No obvious water source is visible
Moisture can travel behind finishes or arrive as condensation, so a dry-looking face does not rule it out. If deposits are heavy, localized, or persistent, arrange a qualified inspection rather than applying stronger cleaner.
Is efflorescence harmful?
Ordinary efflorescence is often an appearance problem rather than a structural failure. Persistent or excessive deposits, however, can signal a moisture condition that deserves attention. The practical distinction is between a small, one-time deposit that dries and weathers away and a recurring pattern accompanied by dampness, cracking, damaged joints, peeling finishes, or visible water entry.
