Ecoregional Green Roofs in Western North America: Applying Regional Ecology to Design

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a green-roof plant community by ecoregion and roof conditions—not by a generic “native plants” list. Bruce Dvorak’s Ecoregional Green Roofs: Theory and Application in the Western USA and Canada shows how climate, nearby reference habitats, growing media, water, maintenance and wildlife objectives can be considered together. It is a professional reference and collection of case studies, not an engineering code or a universal planting prescription.

What “ecoregional” means on a green roof

An ecoregion is a geographically coherent area with characteristic climate, landforms, soils and biological communities. An ecoregional green roof uses that setting as a design starting point. Instead of choosing a plant palette solely because a species is drought-tolerant or widely sold, the designer asks which plant community belongs to the project’s region, what conditions the roof can actually provide, and what the roof is intended to accomplish.

The book’s central contrast is with the low-diversity sedum mixes common on many modern roofs. Those mixes often contain plants originating in Europe or Asia. The volume documents western North American projects where native species have thrived, while stopping short of claiming that every sedum roof fails or that native plants succeed on every roof. Performance still depends on exposure, substrate depth, drainage, water, provenance and care.

“Native” also needs a precise definition. The project describes planting categories that range from vegetation native to the site or nearby ecoregions to combinations that include introduced vegetation. Ecoregional design therefore does not automatically mean a strictly local-only list. State whether the palette is site-native, regionally native, a nearby-ecoregion blend or a deliberate combination, and explain why that category fits the roof.

What the book contains

Published by Springer Nature in 2021, the 619-page volume has 11 chapters and 251 color illustrations. Its three parts move from theory and ecoregion context, through regional case studies, to an overview and future outlook. Chapters address tallgrass prairie, shortgrass prairie, desert southwest, intermontane semi-arid grassland, California coastal, Puget Lowland, Willamette Valley, Fraser Lowland and Vancouver Island ecoregions.

The case studies discuss design concepts, materials, watering and maintenance, wildlife, plant species and lessons learned. That combination makes the book useful during concept design and precedent review: a plant choice can be considered alongside the substrate, irrigation approach and management burden that made it viable.

The American Society of Landscape Architects’ 2021 Professional Awards entry reports that the project examined 73 green-roof case studies in 20 western North American ecoregions and assembled a baseline dataset of 830 plant taxa and 357 genera. The entry also reports visits to 26 conservation sites and more than 140 green roofs, with information gathered through site visits, interviews with owners, designers and managers, and reviews of literature and online sources. These are project-reported counts and methods. They do not mean that all 830 taxa were planted on roofs, performed equally well or suit a particular building.

The ASLA Awards Jury called the volume a “highly compelling one-stop shop for baseline green roof standards” and said it lets professionals “reference and compare a host of diverse environmental conditions in a single source.” Those are the jury’s evaluative words, not a designation by a formal standards or code body.

How to apply the ecoregional method

1. Locate the project in an ecoregion

Start with the site’s actual location, elevation, exposure and local climate records. Ecoregion boundaries are broad; a roof can sit near a transition, in an urban heat island or in a valley that differs from surrounding uplands. Record the nearest natural or restored reference habitats, seasonal rainfall pattern, frost exposure, wind, heat reflected from adjacent walls and any unusual salt or pollution exposure. If several classifications overlap, document which one is being used and why.

2. Define the reference habitat and the project goal

“A native roof” is not a sufficient brief. Decide whether the priority is habitat resemblance, visual character, stormwater interception, thermal buffering, pollinator resources, educational value, low irrigation demand or a combination. A coastal reference meadow, prairie analogue and desert planting will imply different forms, seasonal appearance and maintenance. Write the goal before selecting species so that a visually tidy roof is not evaluated by the same criteria as a habitat roof.

3. Choose a plant community and provenance

Use regional vegetation information to define a community rather than assembling unrelated “native” plants. Check whether seed, plugs or cuttings come from the same ecoregion or a climate comparable to the roof. Provenance affects flowering time, dormancy, cold tolerance and establishment. Nursery availability may require a nearby-ecoregion source or an introduced companion; record that decision instead of presenting the palette as purely local.

Specify the intended layers or functional groups—such as ground cover, bunch-forming plants, seasonal forbs or low shrubs—only when the roof depth, wind and maintenance can support them. The book supplies examples and case contexts, but it does not replace a current plant survey, nursery confirmation or a roof-specific horticultural review.

4. Match the roof assembly to the plants

Plant selection and construction detailing are inseparable. Confirm structural capacity, waterproofing protection, root resistance, drainage, filter layers, growing-medium depth, edge restraint and safe access with the architect, structural engineer and roofing professional. A species that survives in a deep, moisture-retentive medium cannot be transferred to a shallow extensive assembly simply because both sites share an ecoregion.

Map the roof’s microhabitats: full sun and shade, parapet shadows, wind-scoured corners, areas beneath mechanical equipment, slopes and places where water collects. Use those zones to distribute plants and to identify where a single uniform mix would create predictable failures. Materials should be selected as a system; changing the medium or drainage layer after planting decisions can invalidate the original assumptions.

5. Design establishment watering and long-term maintenance

Separate establishment from routine maintenance. Newly installed plugs or seeded areas may need reliable irrigation until roots are developed, even in a dry ecoregion. After establishment, the target may be rainfall-only, seasonal supplemental watering or permanent irrigation, depending on the community and roof exposure. Define who will inspect, weed, repair irrigation, clear drains and replace failed plants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write maintenance triggers rather than relying on a generic calendar: bare areas that invite erosion, blocked outlets, invasive volunteers, failed emitters, excessive woody growth or declining cover. Keep records of weather, watering, mortality and reseeding. Adaptive maintenance lets the manager distinguish a one-time establishment problem from a plant that is fundamentally mismatched to the roof.

6. Include wildlife objectives without creating conflicts

Wildlife value depends on more than a plant’s native status. Flowering sequence, structural variety, nesting or refuge opportunities, pesticide policy, water availability and connections to surrounding habitat all matter. State which groups the roof is intended to support and how people, maintenance access, fall protection and mechanical equipment will be protected. A biodiversity goal should not be used to justify unsafe access or unmanaged vegetation around drains and roof edges.

7. Test the design against comparable cases

Use the book’s case studies as comparisons, not guarantees. For each precedent, record ecoregion, roof type, medium and depth, irrigation, plant source, maintenance regime, wildlife objective and observed lesson. A case from the same broad ecoregion may still be a poor analogue if its roof is deeper, less windy or irrigated year-round. Identify which variables match your project and which do not before borrowing a palette or detail.

Regional lenses in the volume

The regional chapters provide a way to ask better design questions. They do not establish one mandatory list for every roof in a named region.

Ecoregion chapter Questions to resolve on a project What the palette decision must account for
Tallgrass prairie How will the roof support a prairie-like community while accommodating wind, mowing restrictions and access? Seasonal structure, rooting volume, establishment water and the height the assembly can safely carry.
Shortgrass prairie Which low-growing forms fit the roof’s exposure and limited growing environment? Wind, drought periods, shallow media and the desired balance between cover and seasonal diversity.
Desert southwest How will intense heat, aridity and episodic rainfall shape establishment and survival? Water delivery, heat-reflective surroundings, drainage after storms and protection from overwatering.
Intermontane semi-arid grassland What combination of cold, dry conditions and elevation affects dormancy and establishment? Winter exposure, provenance, freeze-thaw resilience and access for supplemental watering.
California coastal How do maritime exposure, seasonal dryness and nearby coastal habitats inform the target community? Salt or wind exposure, summer irrigation expectations and habitat connections.
Puget Lowland Which roof conditions resemble local lowland habitats rather than a generic Pacific Northwest palette? Wet-season drainage, summer-dry establishment, shade patterns and invasive-species control.
Willamette Valley How should a roof reflect valley reference habitats while coping with urban heat and seasonal moisture shifts? Seasonality, irrigation transition, soil volume and maintenance access.
Fraser Lowland What does the local moisture regime mean for drainage, plant health and winter exposure? Waterlogging risk, wind, cold events and species provenance.
Vancouver Island How can coastal-island conditions and nearby habitats guide a resilient roof community? Maritime weather, wind, seasonal moisture and long-term maintenance logistics.

These questions are deliberately diagnostic. Confirm answers with local ecologists, horticulturists and the project’s roof consultant rather than treating a chapter heading as a specification.

Native plants, sedums and mixed palettes

Sedums remain one possible tool, especially where shallow media, intense exposure or limited irrigation constrain the palette. The book’s point is not to ban them; it is to challenge automatic use of a low-diversity mix when a regional community could better meet the project’s ecological and visual goals.

A mixed palette can be appropriate when it is intentional. For example, a project might combine regional natives with introduced plants that provide reliable cover during establishment, or use different categories in separate roof zones. Label each category, explain the ecological trade-off and set performance criteria. Avoid calling a blend “native” without specifying the geographic basis.

Construction coordination and risk controls

Green roofs add dead load, saturated load, retained water and maintenance demands. Structural design, waterproofing, fire considerations, fall protection, access routes, drainage and local approvals must be handled by qualified professionals under the rules applicable to the building’s jurisdiction. The book is not a substitute for structural calculations, roofing warranties, current building codes or permitting advice.

During construction, protect the waterproofing membrane, keep drains and inspection chambers accessible, prevent construction debris from contaminating the medium and verify that irrigation components are installed before planting. Commission the roof after installation: check drainage, leak protection, edge conditions, irrigation coverage and safe access, then document the as-built assembly for future managers.

How to turn a case study into a project brief

  1. Describe the site: address, ecoregion, elevation, roof orientation, slope, shade, wind and reference habitats.
  2. State objectives: habitat, appearance, water management, education, thermal goals or other measurable purposes.
  3. Set assembly limits: allowable loads, medium depth, drainage, waterproofing constraints, access and irrigation.
  4. Define the palette category: site-native, nearby-ecoregion native, mixed or introduced, with provenance requirements.
  5. Plan establishment: planting season, watering responsibility, inspection frequency and replacement strategy.
  6. Set success measures: survival, cover, flowering sequence, invasive control, drain function and wildlife observations.
  7. Review and adapt: compare results with the closest case studies and change management only after diagnosing the cause of failure.

Who will benefit from the book

Landscape architects, ecologists, roof designers, contractors, owners and facilities teams will find the greatest value when they need regional precedents rather than a single generic detail. Its breadth is useful for comparing climates and plant communities, while the case-study format helps a team discuss materials, watering and maintenance before construction.

Springer Nature lists three formats: softcover ISBN 978-3-030-58397-2, hardcover ISBN 978-3-030-58394-1 and eBook ISBN 978-3-030-58395-8. Availability and current pricing vary by seller and were not established here, so verify the edition before ordering.

Limits to keep in view

The volume is a 2021 professional reference. It does not independently validate every roof described, provide current permitting requirements for each municipality, or guarantee that a plant will perform on a new project. Local climate records, current nursery stock, structural analysis, roof-system specifications and maintenance capacity still control the final decision.
