Duvet Size Guide 2026: How to Find the Right Duvet and Tog for You

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The quickest way to choose the right duvet is to separate size from warmth. Measure the mattress, check the duvet’s actual dimensions, buy a cover with matching dimensions, and choose tog according to bedroom temperature and how warm you sleep. UK labels such as “double” and “king” are useful guides, but retailer measurements vary.

The right duvet depends on three separate measurements: the mattress, the duvet and the duvet cover. They are related, but they are not the same size. In the UK, for example, a standard double mattress is typically 135 × 190cm, while a standard double duvet is commonly 200 × 200cm. That extra fabric provides overhang at the sides.

Before buying, measure or check the dimensions of your mattress, decide how much drape you want, then match the duvet cover to the duvet’s exact centimetre measurements. Do not rely on “double”, “king” or “super king” alone: retailers use slightly different dimensions.

UK duvet sizes at a glance

UK label Typical duvet size Typical mattress reference Important buying note
Cot bed 120 × 140cm About 70 × 140cm Use age-appropriate child bedding and follow current safety guidance.
Single 135 × 200cm or 140 × 200cm 90 × 190cm Check whether the duvet and cover are 135cm or 140cm wide.
Double 200 × 200cm 135 × 190cm The square shape usually gives useful side coverage for two people.
King 225–230 × 220cm 150 × 200cm Match a 225cm duvet with a 225cm cover and a 230cm duvet with a 230cm cover.
Super king 260 × 220cm 180 × 200cm One of the more consistently specified adult sizes, but still verify the listing.
Emperor 290 × 235cm 200 × 200cm A specialist oversized UK option rather than a standard size.

These are typical UK reference sizes, not a guarantee that every retailer uses the same measurements. In particular, single duvets may be 135cm or 140cm wide, and king duvets may be 225cm or 230cm wide.

If you already know your bed size, compare the listing dimensions before ordering a double duvet 200 x 200cm, king size duvet 225 x 220cm or super king duvet 260 x 220cm. The labels are useful starting points; the numbers determine whether the duvet will fit your cover.

Duvet size is not mattress size

A mattress-size chart tells you the area on which you sleep. A duvet-size chart tells you the finished blanket size. A duvet is normally wider and sometimes longer than the mattress so it can cover the sleeper and hang over the edges.

For example, a 135 × 190cm double mattress does not normally need a 135 × 190cm duvet. A 200 × 200cm double duvet is designed to provide additional coverage. Likewise, a 150 × 200cm king mattress is commonly paired with a duvet around 225–230 × 220cm.

How to measure and choose

  1. Identify the mattress category. Check whether it is a small single, standard single, small double, double, king or super king. A “small double” is not the same as a standard double.
  2. Measure the mattress if you are uncertain. Measure width and length, and note whether a deep mattress or mattress topper changes the amount of side coverage you need.
  3. Decide how much overhang you want. The usual matching category is a sensible starting point. A larger duvet can give more side drape, but it can also be heavier, harder to wash and more difficult to keep inside a smaller cover.
  4. Check the duvet’s actual dimensions. Record the width and length in centimetres, including whether the product is 225cm or 230cm wide.
  5. Buy the cover to those measurements. A cover described as “king size” by a different retailer may not fit unless its centimetre dimensions match.

Never assume an imported or IKEA product follows standard UK naming. Some brands use their own labels or dimensions. US bedding terminology is particularly easy to confuse with UK sizing: a 220 × 240cm duvet is more commonly associated with a US queen-sized product than with a typical UK double or king. Check the country and the centimetre measurements before buying.

For a replacement cover, look for a matching king size duvet cover, 135 x 200 duvet cover or 260 x 220 duvet cover only after confirming that the anchor dimensions match your duvet. The cover should not be selected by colour or bed label alone.

What does tog mean?

TOG is a measure of thermal resistance, or how well the duvet traps air and insulates you. It is a warmth rating, not a direct measure of weight, thickness or quality. Two duvets with the same tog can feel different because their fillings, construction and casing differ.

Tog range Typical use Best suited to
2.5–4.5 tog Summer or cool, lightweight use Warm bedrooms and people who sleep hot.
7–10.5 tog Moderate warmth Spring and autumn, or year-round use in many homes.
13.5–15 tog Winter warmth Cold bedrooms and people who tend to sleep cold.
All-season Separate layers used alone or joined Households wanting one adaptable system through the year.

These are shopping bands, not a universal prescription. Bedroom temperature, sleepwear, sheets, mattress protectors and personal preference all affect comfort. A 13.5 tog duvet is not automatically better than a 10.5 tog duvet: it may simply be too warm for some sleepers.

Which tog should you buy?

If you sleep hot

Start with a 2.5–4.5 tog duvet, particularly if the bedroom is warm. Look for a lightweight, breathable construction and avoid choosing a high tog simply because a thick duvet feels luxurious in the packaging. Wool, silk and some specialist fibres are marketed for temperature-conscious sleepers, but check the care requirements and product claims rather than assuming a particular filling will solve overheating.

If you sleep cold

Consider a 10.5–13.5 tog duvet, depending on bedroom temperature and how much bedding you use. A warmer bedroom layer or sleepwear may be more comfortable than moving straight to the heaviest available duvet. If your needs change substantially between seasons, an all-season combination is usually more flexible.

If you want one duvet for the whole year

A 7–10.5 tog single duvet can be a reasonable compromise, but it may be too warm in summer and not warm enough in winter. A two-part all-season duvet gives you more control: use the lighter layer alone in warm weather, the warmer layer during transitional seasons and both layers together in winter.

A common configuration is 4.5 tog plus 9 tog, producing approximately 13.5 tog when joined. Another is 4.5 tog plus 10.5 tog, producing approximately 15 tog together. Check how the layers fasten and whether both parts use the same finished dimensions before buying an all-season duvet or 4.5 plus 10.5 tog duvet.

If two people prefer different temperatures

Upsizing the duvet does not solve different warmth preferences. Better options include two separate single duvets, a dual-tog design or a “yours and mine” duvet. These let each person choose a more suitable warmth level without one sleeper having to share a very hot or very light duvet.

An all-season system can also help if both sleepers are happy with the same layers but need more flexibility. If the preferred tog levels are different, compare a dual tog duvet or yours and mine duvet instead.

All-season versus single-tog duvets

Option Advantages Limitations
single summer duvet Light, simple and usually easier to wash. May not provide enough warmth outside summer.
single winter duvet Warm and straightforward for cold sleepers. Can be uncomfortably hot in warmer months.
medium single duvet A simple compromise for moderate conditions. Less adaptable across seasonal temperature changes.
All-season combination Separate or join layers for different seasons. More expensive initially, bulkier to store and potentially heavier when joined.
Dual-tog or separate duvets Useful when partners have different warmth preferences. May require a different bed-making arrangement or two covers.

For a general household, the strongest flexible choice is usually a 4.5 + 9 tog or 4.5 + 10.5 tog all-season system. That is a recommendation for versatility, not a claim that it is the best option for every sleeper.

Choosing a duvet filling

Filling What to consider
Synthetic microfibre or hollowfibre Often practical, widely available and easier to wash. Some products are sold in anti-allergy variants, but check the individual manufacturer’s claim and care instructions.
Down and feather Often light and lofty for a given warmth. Compare the down-to-feather ratio, sourcing information, casing and cleaning requirements.
Wool Commonly marketed as breathable and temperature-regulating. It may need more careful care and can feel different from synthetic or down fillings.
Silk or specialist fibres Potentially useful for lightweight or temperature-conscious sleepers, but usually more niche and often more demanding to care for.

Fill weight is not the same as tog. A heavier-looking or heavier-feeling duvet is not necessarily warmer, and a high-loft filling may provide substantial insulation without the same physical weight. Compare tog, filling type, construction, casing and washing instructions together.

Children and cot-bed duvets: an important safety distinction

Do not use a duvet or pillow for a baby under 12 months. The safety guidance reviewed for this guide recommends age-appropriate bedding after that point, following the product instructions and current national guidance. A cot-bed duvet is not automatically suitable for a younger baby simply because it is smaller than an adult duvet.

For an older child, check the recommended age, size, tog, washing instructions and fit for the cot or cot bed. Avoid choosing adult bedding solely because it is cheaper or already available.

Common duvet-buying mistakes

  • Assuming all king-size duvets match. A 225 × 220cm king duvet and a 230 × 220cm king duvet need covers with corresponding dimensions.
  • Buying a cover from a different retailer without checking the numbers. Retailer labels are not a substitute for centimetre measurements.
  • Choosing by thickness or packet size. Use tog and filling information instead; packaging bulk does not tell you how warm the duvet will be.
  • Assuming a higher tog is always better. Excess warmth can be as uncomfortable as insufficient warmth.
  • Upsizing to solve a temperature mismatch. A wider duvet gives more coverage, not necessarily a cooler or warmer sleeping environment.
  • Ignoring the washing machine and drying space. Check the care label and whether your machine and dryer can handle the finished duvet safely.
  • Using adult bedding for a baby. Follow the under-12-month safety restriction and use appropriate bedding thereafter.
  • Applying US sizes to a UK bed. Confirm the country of the size chart and compare the actual dimensions.

Buying checklist

  1. Write down the mattress width and length.
  2. Confirm whether the bed is a small double, standard double, king or another less common size.
  3. Choose the amount of side and bottom drape you want.
  4. Select a tog based on bedroom temperature and sleeping preference.
  5. Choose the filling and check its care requirements.
  6. Verify the duvet’s finished dimensions in centimetres.
  7. Buy a cover with the same finished dimensions, not merely the same bed-size label.
  8. Check the duvet’s washing, drying and storage requirements before committing.
  9. For couples, consider separate, dual-tog or all-season options if warmth preferences differ.
  10. For children, verify age suitability and follow current safety guidance.

If you are replacing a complete set, prioritise the duvet and cover dimensions first, then compare tog and filling. For a flexible household, an all-season duvet is the most useful general product category. For a hot sleeper, begin with a lower-tog summer duvet; for a cold sleeper, compare medium-to-winter options rather than assuming the thickest product is best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a duvet be the same size as the bed?

Usually, choose the duvet category that corresponds to your mattress, then verify the duvet’s actual dimensions. The duvet is normally larger than the mattress to provide side coverage. You can choose a larger duvet for extra drape, but make sure the cover matches it and consider the added weight, bulk and washing difficulty.

Is a higher-tog duvet heavier?

A higher tog is not necessarily heavier. Tog measures thermal resistance and warmth; the filling, construction and loft determine the duvet’s physical weight and bulk. Two duvets with the same tog can feel different.

What is the best all-year tog?

A 7–10.5 tog duvet can be a practical compromise, but a two-part all-season duvet is more adaptable. A 4.5 tog layer can be used alone in warmer weather and joined to a 9 or 10.5 tog layer when more warmth is needed.

Can a baby use a duvet?

No. Babies under 12 months should not use duvets or pillows according to the safety guidance reviewed for this guide. Use age-appropriate bedding after that point and follow current product and national safety guidance.

Why do king-size duvet dimensions differ?

Retailers use slightly different product dimensions, especially for king duvets. One king may be 225 × 220cm while another is 230 × 220cm. Match the cover to the actual duvet dimensions rather than relying only on the word “king”.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a US queen duvet the same as a UK double?

A US queen duvet is not a reliable equivalent for a UK double or king. US and UK bedding conventions differ, so check the country of the size chart and compare the width and length in centimetres.

How should a duvet be washed and stored?

Check the care label before washing. The duvet’s size, filling and construction determine whether it can be washed at home or needs specialist cleaning. It must also be thoroughly dried before storage or use to prevent damp-related problems.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Measure the mattress, choose the duvet for the desired coverage, and match the cover to the duvet’s exact centimetre dimensions. For warmth, use tog as an insulation guide rather than a weight or quality score. A 4.5 + 9 or 4.5 + 10.5 tog all-season system is the most flexible choice for many households, while hot sleepers, cold sleepers, couples and children may need more specific solutions.
