Yes—citronella can repel mosquitoes, but it usually protects for less time and less consistently than DEET. How well it works depends on the product formulation, mosquito species and conditions such as heat, sweat, water and rubbing. A citronella spray, candle and wristband are not interchangeable: evidence for one format does not establish that another works.
How long does citronella keep mosquitoes away?
Duration is citronella’s main limitation. A 2011 review of 11 controlled studies found that citronella products generally provided a shorter period of protection than DEET. In the review’s comparisons involving Aedes mosquitoes, mean protection was 86.28 minutes for citronella alone and 342.73 minutes for DEET. The pooled difference was 253 minutes shorter for citronella (95% confidence interval 169–336 minutes). These are study averages, not a guarantee for any particular product or outing. Results also differed by mosquito species and test setup. In studies included in that review, citronella-alone protection lasted at least 1.5 hours against Aedes, about 3 hours against Anopheles and about 5 hours against Culex. Some room studies reported complete repellency for at least 3 hours. Those findings should not be treated as a single universal duration: species, formulation and whether the test was conducted in a room or on skin all matter.
A 2026 review of human studies reported that natural essential-oil repellents, including citronella, commonly provided 2–4 hours of complete protection, while DEET products commonly provided 5–9 hours. These are broad ranges across products and studies, not a citronella-specific promise. Check the individual product label for its stated protection time.

Is citronella as effective as DEET?
For duration of protection, the evidence favors DEET. The 2011 review concluded that citronella products were less effective than DEET products in how long they protected against bites. That does not mean citronella has no repellent activity; it means a person relying on it may need to manage shorter and less predictable coverage.
Some citronella formulations containing vanillin protected longer than citronella alone in several comparisons, but the evidence was limited and not uniformly conclusive. Do not assume a combination product lasts longer unless its own label supports that expectation.

“Natural” is not a measure of how long a product protects. For prolonged outdoor exposure or situations where mosquito bites carry disease risk, compare label-backed protection times and choose an EPA-registered repellent labeled for the intended use. Registration and the product label are more useful than an ingredient’s natural or synthetic origin when judging a specific repellent.

Evidence for a topical product depends on the precise formulation, concentration and method of application. In one controlled trial, a product containing 0.05% citronella provided less protection than the mineral-oil moisturizer tested alongside it. The result cautions against assuming that any product containing citronella will repel mosquitoes effectively; it does not establish that all citronella skin products perform the same way.

Protection can also change during use. The CDC says efficacy and duration vary with the active-ingredient concentration, mosquito species, temperature, perspiration, water exposure and rubbing. Follow the product label, including its instructions on how often to reapply; do not reapply more often than it allows. CDC Yellow Book: Insect Avoidance
Do citronella candles, incense or wristbands work?
Spatial products and wearable products should be assessed separately from skin-applied repellents. A result from a topical trial does not show that a candle protects a patio, and evidence for a candle does not show that a wristband prevents bites.

Candles and incense
A field study in Ontario tested candles containing 3% citronella and incense containing 5% citronella against Aedes mosquitoes. Those specific tests address those products and conditions; they do not establish the protection offered by every candle or incense product, or that either gives a person the same coverage as an effective topical repellent. Field study of citronella candles and incense
Wristbands
In a controlled trial, citronella wristbands did not protect beyond the area immediately around the application site. A wristband therefore should not be treated as whole-body protection against bites.

How to choose and use a mosquito repellent
- Match the product to the exposure. For a brief period outdoors, a short-duration option may be sufficient if its label meets your needs. For longer exposure, compare stated protection times and select an EPA-registered product labeled for repellent use.
- Check the exact format and label. A topical product, candle, incense and wearable device serve different purposes; do not transfer a claim from one format to another.
- Account for conditions. Heat, sweating, water and rubbing can affect how long protection lasts. Follow label directions, including any reapplication interval.
- Do not rely on a repellent claim beyond its evidence. A product that repels mosquitoes for a time is not, on that basis alone, proven to prevent mosquito-borne disease.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Controlled studies and reviews support citronella’s ability to repel mosquitoes, while consistently identifying shorter or more variable duration than DEET. The findings do not establish one protection time for every citronella product, every mosquito species or every real-world setting. Treat the ingredient as a possible short-duration option, not an all-night guarantee, and use the product label to guide a decision about a particular formulation.
