No—not as a dependable weed-control method. Baking soda may injure plant foliage, but leaf damage does not show that a weed’s roots or underground stems have been killed. Extension guidance also warns that household products used this way can harm desirable plants, turf and soil. There is no supported baking-soda weed-control dose in the sources cited here.
Why baking soda may damage a weed without killing it
Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is often promoted as a homemade herbicide. UC Weed Science classifies it among home-remedy substances used as contact treatments: they act on the plant tissue they reach rather than moving through the plant to underground structures. That distinction matters because a weed can lose or damage its leaves and still regrow from surviving roots, rhizomes or tubers. UC Weed Science’s 2015 discussion of homemade herbicides explains why visible injury is not the same as lasting control.

UConn Extension makes the same broader distinction when discussing homemade pesticide remedies: contact injury does not necessarily control roots, so plants may return. That is general context, not a baking-soda-specific weed-killing trial. UConn Extension’s homemade-pesticide guidance was updated in July 2024.

Baking soda is not evaluated or labeled as a weed killer in the Wisconsin Extension guidance. Household products used as weed-control remedies can harm turf, other non-target plants and soil, and the guidance does not establish a safe baking-soda application rate. A substance that injures a weed may also injure plants you want to keep.

Sodium bicarbonate also has uses unrelated to weed control. The University of Florida IFAS discusses it as a fungicide for plant diseases and notes that concentrated or repeated use can damage foliage. That is evidence of potential plant injury, not evidence that baking soda reliably kills weeds. UF/IFAS’s overview of natural products for managing landscape and garden pests covers that different use.
What to do instead
For an isolated weed
Hand removal is a practical option when there are only a few weeds. Remove as much of the plant and its root system as practical, especially for established weeds that may regrow from underground parts. A December 2025 UC Cooperative Extension newsletter discusses hand removal in greenhouse weed management; that supports manual removal as an option, not a head-to-head trial for home gardens. Read the UCCE Winter Extension Newsletter 2025.

- KILLS WEEDS AND GRASSES: Use on driveways and walkways, and around fences, trees, flower beds, shrubs and other listed areas
- ACCUSHOT SPRAYER: Includes continuous power sprayer with extendable wand
- KILLS THE ROOT: Visible results as fast as 3 hours — replant new flowers, trees and shrubs the same weekend
- RAINFAST: Rainfall or watering 15 minutes after application will not wash away effectiveness
For broadleaf weeds in a lawn
First identify the weed and confirm that any treatment is labeled for both that weed and the lawn site. Wisconsin Extension describes iron HEDTA products for certain broadleaf lawn weeds. This is not a universal lawn treatment: the permitted weeds and use sites depend on the specific product label. Follow that label. Wisconsin Extension’s broadleaf lawn weed guidance, published October 1, 2026, discusses these choices.

- A reliable baking-soda method for killing weeds or preventing their return.
- A safe or effective baking-soda dose for lawns, garden beds or other sites.
- An efficacy percentage, success rate or controlled trial showing baking soda kills weeds.
Because those points are not established, a recipe or rate would imply a level of effectiveness and safety that the cited sources do not support.
