You may need a reverse-osmosis (RO) purifier only when your water report or test identifies a contaminant or quality problem that the exact RO model is certified to reduce. RO is not an automatic requirement for every home. Start with evidence about your water, then select treatment that addresses the documented concern.
For a utility-supplied home, begin with the current consumer confidence report. For a private well, or whenever no useful report is available, arrange appropriate independent testing. The result should guide the purifier, installation location, operating requirements and ongoing replacement-filter budget.

What an RO purifier does—and what it does not prove
Reverse osmosis is a point-of-use drinking-water treatment method. A pressurized feed stream passes through a semipermeable membrane; treated water goes to a dedicated drinking tap while a separate reject stream carries concentrated dissolved material away. Most household RO installations are located beneath a kitchen sink or at another drinking-water tap, so they treat water for drinking and cooking rather than automatically treating showers, toilets, laundry or outdoor fixtures.
That distinction matters on a construction project. A point-of-use system can solve a drinking-water concern without changing the plumbing for the whole building. It does not, by itself, make every fixture safe for every use, and it should not be specified as a whole-house remedy unless a separately designed treatment system addresses the wider distribution system.

An RO system’s certification also has a defined meaning. NSF/ANSI 58 applies to point-of-use reverse-osmosis drinking-water treatment systems. It covers materials safety, structural integrity, total dissolved solids (TDS) reduction, efficiency and recovery ratings, contaminant-reduction performance, and information supplied to end users. Certification to that standard does not mean the system reduces every contaminant. The exact model must list a reduction claim for the substance found in your water.
Begin with a water report or a properly chosen test
Municipal or other utility water
Ask the water provider for its latest consumer confidence report, also called a water-quality report. It describes results for the regulated system as a whole, not necessarily the water at your individual tap. Read the report for contaminants and parameters relevant to your property, the reporting period and any notices about treatment changes or violations.
A report is a starting point, not a substitute for judgment. Plumbing materials, building age, stagnant water and storage tanks can affect water at the tap. If the report does not answer the concern you have, obtain testing that is appropriate for the suspected contaminant and the location where water will be consumed.

Private wells
Private-well owners do not receive a municipal consumer confidence report. Arrange independent testing through a qualified laboratory or local health authority, using sampling instructions for the contaminants of concern. Test after events that can change well water, such as flooding, construction near the well, a change in taste or odor, or a change in the well’s operation.
Do not choose an RO unit because a well is private. Test results should identify the issue. Depending on the result, the correct remedy could be disinfection, sediment treatment, iron or manganese treatment, a softener, a whole-house process, or a point-of-use purifier. RO is one option among these, not a universal well treatment.
When no report is available
If a report is unavailable, incomplete or too old for the decision you must make, commission independent drinking-water testing. Tell the laboratory whether the sample is from a private well, a utility tap, a storage tank or a point-of-use faucet. Sampling method and location affect what the result means, so follow the laboratory’s instructions precisely.

Match the treatment to the documented concern
NSF’s consumer guidance puts the sequence plainly: “Based on the water report or your water testing results, you can decide what contaminants you want to reduce in your drinking water.” Use that sequence rather than starting with a purifier’s marketing list.

| Water evidence or objective | Question to answer | Likely treatment scope |
|---|---|---|
| A named contaminant appears in a report or test | Does the exact model have a verified reduction claim for that contaminant? | Point-of-use RO may be appropriate when the model’s claim matches the result. |
| Only elevated TDS is documented | Does the system meet the applicable TDS-reduction requirement, and is taste or scaling the actual problem? | RO is a possible drinking-water option; investigate the cause of high TDS before specifying equipment. |
| Concern affects bathing, laundry or all fixtures | Would treating one drinking tap leave the main concern unchanged elsewhere? | Evaluate whole-house or building-level treatment rather than relying on point-of-use RO. |
| No reliable water evidence | What contaminant or quality issue are you trying to correct? | Test first. Selecting a purifier without a defined target is not a defensible specification. |
Systems vary. Some target a single contaminant; others address several. A long list of possible reductions is useful only when the listed claim applies to the exact model, configuration and replacement components you will install.
What NSF/ANSI 58 certification tells you
TDS reduction is required by the standard
NSF/ANSI 58 requires a TDS-reduction performance claim for certified point-of-use RO systems. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2024 WaterSense supporting statement describes the standard test requirement as at least 75% TDS reduction. That is a performance requirement used in the standard’s testing; it is not a promise that every system removes every contaminant a household may care about.
Other contaminant claims are optional
Claims for substances such as lead, nitrate or nitrite, fluoride and arsenic are optional under the standard. A system can be certified to NSF/ANSI 58 without carrying each of those claims. Check the model’s certification record and performance data for the specific substance named in your water report or laboratory result.
Certification is not a blanket guarantee
NSF’s standards guidance cautions that certification to a standard or protocol does not mean a filter or treatment system reduces all possible contaminants. Read three items together:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The standard to which the system is certified.
- The exact contaminant-reduction claim listed for the model.
- The conditions and replacement components required for that claim to remain valid.
Do not infer an arsenic, nitrate, fluoride or lead reduction claim from a TDS claim alone. TDS is a broad measurement of dissolved material; it does not identify which substances are present or establish that a particular health-relevant contaminant is reduced.

A practical decision process
- Define the water source. Record whether the property is served by a utility, a private well or a storage system. Note the sampling point and any recent changes in the water.
- Collect the best available evidence. Obtain the current utility consumer confidence report, or arrange appropriate independent testing when the report is unavailable or the property uses a private well.
- List the actual concerns. Separate measured contaminants from non-health complaints such as taste, odor, hardness, staining or scaling. A purifier should be selected for a stated objective.
- Decide the treatment boundary. If the objective concerns drinking and cooking water, a point-of-use installation may fit. If it concerns water used throughout the building, assess broader treatment.
- Check the exact model. Verify NSF/ANSI 58 certification where relevant and confirm a contaminant-specific claim for every substance you intend to reduce.
- Check operating conditions. Review feed-water requirements, available pressure, drain connection, storage capacity, faucet compatibility and any required pretreatment in the manufacturer’s installation information.
- Price the complete life cycle. Include the purifier, installation, compatible replacement filters and membrane, service access and any components needed to protect the system from the documented water condition.
- Document the specification. Keep the report or test result, the model number, the certification information, the installation date and the replacement schedule with the building’s maintenance records.
Planning an RO installation during construction or renovation
Choose the point of use
Coordinate the purifier with the drinking-water tap it will serve. An under-sink reverse-osmosis system normally needs a cold-water feed, a treated-water faucet or connection, a drain route for reject water and enough space to remove filters and the membrane. Exact connection details vary by model, so the selected installation information should control rough-in work.
Reserve service clearance
Do not bury the equipment behind a fixed panel or tightly pack it beside a disposal, water heater or other appliance. Installers need room to shut off the feed, remove cartridges, inspect tubing and sanitize or service the assembly. A cabinet plan that fits the equipment but blocks filter removal creates avoidable maintenance failures.
Coordinate with the sink and countertop
Confirm whether the sink or countertop has an unused opening for the dedicated faucet. If a new opening is required, establish its location before fabrication. Keep treated-water tubing away from sharp edges, heat sources and moving hardware, and protect it from kinks during cabinet installation.

RO reject water must be routed according to the selected system’s instructions. The drain connection should remain accessible for inspection and should not be improvised in a way that can leak into the cabinet. If the project uses unusual plumbing, confirm compatibility before walls or cabinets are closed.
Consider access in multi-unit or commercial work
In apartments, offices or other multi-user buildings, identify who will replace filters, who can isolate the unit and how maintenance records will be retained. A point-of-use purifier installed for one break-room tap should not be represented as treatment for every fixture in the building.
Maintenance, replacement parts and operating cost
RO performance depends on maintenance. NSF advises following the selected model’s instructions and including compatible replacement-filter costs in the budget. The replacement interval is model-specific and can depend on water quality, usage and the system’s design; do not substitute a generic schedule for the manufacturer’s instructions.

- Record the installation date and the model number of every cartridge and membrane.
- Use replacement filters and membranes identified as compatible with that model and configuration.
- Inspect tubing, shutoff valves, the faucet and the drain connection when servicing the unit.
- Watch for changes in taste, flow, production rate, leaks or unusual noise and investigate rather than continuing indefinitely.
- After a long vacancy, follow the manufacturer’s procedure for flushing or sanitizing before drinking the water.
Include recurring parts in the owner’s maintenance budget, not just the initial equipment price. A low purchase price can be misleading if compatible cartridges are difficult to obtain or service access is poor. Conversely, a system that fits the documented water concern and can be maintained safely may be more useful than a larger unit with unverified claims.

When RO is not the right first choice
The concern is not identified
Without a report or test, there is no contaminant-specific target to match. Start with water evidence rather than buying a purifier based on a general claim about “cleaner” water.
The issue is building-wide
A point-of-use RO unit treats only the tap or taps connected to it. If the documented concern affects water used for bathing, laundry, food preparation at several locations or equipment protection throughout the building, assess a treatment design at the appropriate point in the plumbing system.
The system lacks the needed claim
If the exact model does not list a verified reduction claim for the contaminant found in the test, select a different treatment approach or obtain professional advice. Do not treat a standard number as evidence of an unlisted reduction.
Pretreatment is required
Some water conditions can shorten membrane or cartridge life or interfere with operation. If the model’s instructions specify pretreatment, provide it as part of the design. A membrane installed without required upstream protection may not deliver the expected performance or service life.

| Comparison axis | Questions for the specification |
|---|---|
| Contaminant match | Does the exact model have a verified claim for each contaminant identified by the report or test? |
| Treatment scope | Is a drinking tap the correct boundary, or does the concern require treatment of more household water? |
| Certification | Which standard applies, and are the relevant claims listed separately rather than implied by a general certification? |
| Capacity and installation | Will the feed, drain, faucet, pressure and cabinet space meet the model’s installation requirements? |
| Maintenance | What filters and membrane must be replaced, how will service be accessed, and who is responsible? |
| Recurring cost | What do compatible replacement parts cost, and are they available for the expected service life of the building? |
| Documentation | Can the owner retain the certification information, installation instructions and maintenance record? |
There is no sound model-by-model ranking without matching each system to the reader’s water. The best choice is the one whose documented claim, treatment boundary, installation requirements and maintenance plan fit the measured problem.

Troubleshooting after installation
Low or declining flow
Check whether a scheduled filter or membrane replacement is due, whether the feed shutoff is fully open and whether tubing is kinked. If the issue began after construction work, inspect the feed and drain connections. Follow the model’s service instructions before replacing parts.
Unexpected taste or odor
Confirm that the system was flushed or sanitized as instructed after installation or a long vacancy. Check cartridge age and verify that replacement parts match the model. If the problem persists, retest the water and have the installation evaluated rather than assuming the membrane is reducing the intended contaminant.
Leaks or a wet cabinet
Close the system’s feed shutoff, dry the cabinet and inspect fittings, tubing and the faucet connection. Do not leave an active leak unattended. Replace damaged components with compatible parts and verify the drain connection before returning the system to service.
The test result does not improve
Review the laboratory sample location, the contaminant claim for the exact model, the installation configuration and the replacement status of the filters and membrane. A TDS result alone cannot confirm reduction of a particular contaminant, and an unlisted contaminant claim cannot be inferred from certification.
Questions to settle before approving the work
- What water report or laboratory result justifies treatment?
- Which contaminant or quality characteristic is the purifier intended to address?
- Is the proposed system point-of-use, and does that match the area of concern?
- Where is the exact model’s NSF/ANSI 58 certification and contaminant-specific claim documented?
- What feed, drain, faucet, pressure and cabinet provisions are required?
- Who will replace filters and membranes, and where will the maintenance record be kept?
- What recurring replacement parts and service costs should the owner expect?
The decision in one sentence
Choose an RO purifier when documented water evidence identifies a drinking-water concern and the exact point-of-use model is certified to reduce that concern; otherwise, test first or select treatment whose verified scope matches the problem.
