Sometimes. Rain can wash away some surface dirt, but it does not guarantee clean, fully productive solar panels. Pollen, dust, mineral residue and other deposits may remain after repeated rainfall. The sensible decision depends on the material on your panels, local weather, panel angle, measured or suspected performance loss, the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and whether the likely energy recovery exceeds the cost and safety risk.
Does rain clean solar panels?
Rain is a natural rinse, not a universal cleaning program. Drops can remove loose particles, especially when wind and rainfall reach the module surface at a useful angle. Rain may leave behind fine dust, pollen films, bird residue or minerals, however. A light shower can also redistribute contamination rather than remove it completely.

Whether a panel becomes cleaner after rain depends on the deposit and the site. A dry, loose particle may be scoured away. A deposit that has mixed with moisture and adhered to the glass can remain through several storms. Panel tilt matters because it controls how quickly water drains and whether dew or rain sits on the surface. Humidity, nearby vegetation, agricultural activity, roads, construction and unpaved ground all change the result.

There is no evidence establishing a universal rainfall amount or number of rainy days that makes manual cleaning unnecessary. Instead of using a rain total as a rule, inspect the modules and consider the system’s production data.

What happens in rainy climates
Pollen can persist despite frequent storms
A December 2023 National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) report examined five utility-scale solar plants in four North Carolina counties. During peak spring pollen season, measured performance fell by as much as 15%. Rain removed some pollen but did not restore the plants to their pre-soiling performance.
The plants had operated for more than seven years without manual cleaning. Based on the study’s data and setting, NREL estimated that annual production losses without planned cleaning could be on the order of 10%. After mechanical wet-brush cleaning, measured performance increased by 5% to 11% at the studied sites.
Those figures are evidence of what can happen at particular utility-scale plants in a pollen-heavy region. They are not a guaranteed loss or cleaning gain for a residential rooftop. Roof pitch, module design, surrounding vegetation, weather and electricity value can be very different.
“Regular rainfall is not sufficient to assume that solar plants are fully cleaned in certain environments,” NREL quoted research engineer Matthew Muller as saying.

Seasonal soiling may matter more than annual rainfall
A location can receive substantial rain overall yet experience a short period when pollen or biological material accumulates faster than storms remove it. If output drops during that season and recovers after an appropriate cleaning, a seasonal service may make more economic sense than either never cleaning or washing on a fixed monthly schedule.
Why dust behaves differently
Loose dust versus bonded deposits
Dust is not one uniform substance. Wind and rain may remove loose particles, while fine mineral material can collect in a film. NREL describes a process in which overnight cooling and morning dew contribute to “cementation”: particles become more strongly attached as moisture evaporates and minerals bind together.
“Once it goes through the cementation process, it can become much more difficult to remove to where even a strong rain won’t remove it,” NREL quoted senior scientist Lin Simpson.

Sandia technical modeling guidance likewise treats soiling losses as dependent on the type and accumulated amount of particulate. Precipitation naturally removes some forms of soiling; other deposits require manual washing. A dusty inland site, a coastal site with salt, and a home beside a construction area can therefore need different decisions even if their rainfall totals are similar.

Panel angle, dew and drainage
Steeper modules generally shed water more quickly, while low-slope arrays can retain moisture and residue for longer. The exact effect depends on the deposit and module surface, so tilt alone cannot predict whether cleaning is needed. Look for persistent streaks or films after the surface has dried rather than judging the system immediately during a storm.
How to decide whether cleaning is worth it
NREL’s operations-and-maintenance guidance recommends a site-specific cost-benefit assessment. The relevant comparison is the expected value of recovered electricity against cleaning expense, water and equipment requirements, access risk and the possibility of module damage.
Check the evidence at your site
- Review the monitoring record. Compare current production with your system’s normal output under similar sunlight and temperature conditions. A single cloudy day is not proof of soiling; look for a sustained change or a repeatable seasonal pattern.
- Inspect from a safe location. Note continuous films, pollen bands, dust accumulation, bird deposits or mineral spotting. Visible dirt does not provide a precise percentage loss, but persistent deposits are a reason to investigate.
- Identify the likely material. Ask whether the problem follows pollen season, nearby earthmoving, harvest activity, dry winds, salt exposure or bird activity. The chance that rain will remove the material depends on this diagnosis.
- Read the module and inverter documentation. Use the cleaning method, water quality and detergent specified by the manufacturer. Warranty terms may also set limits.
- Estimate the payback. Compare the cost of an approved cleaning with the value of the production you could reasonably recover during the affected period. Include professional access or fall-protection costs when the array is on a roof.
If the evidence is inconclusive, continue monitoring and ask the installer or monitoring provider whether they can calculate a soiling ratio. The cited guidance does not establish one residential production-loss percentage at which every system should be washed.

How to clean panels when the manufacturer allows it
The NREL O&M guidance says to follow the photovoltaic module manufacturer’s recommendations. It describes plain demineralized water and a mild detergent recommended by the manufacturer. An economical example uses a bucket, strip cleaner and squeegee. This is guidance for compatible equipment, not permission to use any household cleaner or tool on any module.
- Confirm the approved procedure. Obtain the module manual or written instructions from the installer. Check water quality, detergent, temperature, timing and whether cleaning should be performed by a service technician.
- Plan for safe access. Do not climb onto a roof or wet module surface unless you have appropriate training and fall protection. If you cannot reach the array from a safe position, arrange qualified help.
- Choose suitable water and detergent. Use demineralized water and only the mild, manufacturer-recommended detergent described in the instructions. Avoid assuming that tap water is acceptable; dissolved minerals can leave spots.
- Remove material gently. Follow the approved sequence with the specified strip cleaner or other tool. Do not improvise with abrasive pads, solvents or unapproved chemicals.
- Rinse and remove remaining water as directed. A compatible squeegee can limit drying marks when the manufacturer permits it. Do not apply force that could damage the module surface, frame or seals.
- Document the result. Record the date, conditions and any visible change. Compare subsequent production with comparable weather so you can decide whether the cleaning delivered worthwhile recovery.
Methods to avoid unless the manufacturer explicitly approves them
- High-pressure water
- Generic brushes or abrasive tools
- Solvents
- Abrasive cleaners
- Harsh detergents
NREL’s utility-scale study used mechanical wet-brush cleaning to measure performance recovery. That intervention should not be turned into a blanket recommendation for homeowners: the equipment, scale, controls and access conditions were different, and the module manufacturer’s instructions govern.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often should solar panels be cleaned?
The available evidence does not support a universal weekly, monthly or annual interval. NREL’s guidance says an interval may be seasonal and can depend on rainfall and dust characteristics. A spring pollen event, a prolonged dry season or nearby construction can justify a different response from a relatively clean site with regular useful rain.
Use a condition-based schedule instead:
- Inspect after the local season that produces the heaviest pollen, dust or other deposits.
- Check monitoring data for a sustained change rather than reacting to one low-production day.
- Reassess after major construction, landscaping, harvest activity or unusual wind events near the array.
- Record cleaning dates and production before and after them to learn your site’s pattern.
That approach avoids paying for unnecessary washing while reducing the chance that a persistent deposit remains for an entire high-production season.

Warning signs that rain has not done enough
- A visible film or band remains after several storms and the modules are dry.
- Dust or pollen repeatedly returns in the same season.
- Production is consistently below the system’s normal weather-adjusted pattern.
- Mineral spots, bonded dirt or bird deposits remain in the same areas.
- A nearby activity, such as earthmoving or agricultural work, has changed the amount of airborne material.
These signs call for an inspection and a cost-benefit decision, not an automatic order to wash. Electrical faults, shading, inverter problems, snow and temperature can also reduce output, so do not attribute every decline to dirt.
Roof and electrical safety come first
Cleaning is not worth a fall or electrical injury. The cited technical guidance does not provide a complete residential fall-protection or electrical-isolation procedure. Homeowners who cannot safely access the modules should use a qualified professional rather than climbing onto a roof with a bucket or hose.
Never assume that switching off an inverter makes roof work risk-free. Follow the system owner’s documentation and local safety requirements, and keep water and tools away from electrical equipment unless the approved procedure specifically addresses them.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell a homeowner
The strongest numerical evidence here comes from five utility-scale plants in North Carolina during a pollen-heavy period: up to 15% seasonal performance reduction, an estimated annual loss on the order of 10% without planned cleaning, and 5%–11% measured increases after mechanical wet-brush cleaning. Those numbers show that rainfall can fail to remove biologically active soiling; they do not predict the result for every home.
For residential systems, the defensible conclusion is narrower: inspect the actual deposit, use monitoring as supporting evidence, follow the module maker’s method, and compare likely recovered production with cost and access risk. Neither a rainy forecast nor a dusty climate by itself determines the correct cleaning decision.
