They did find that some children’s mattresses emit semivolatile chemicals and that several compounds were more concentrated close to children’s sleeping surfaces than in the surrounding bedroom air.
That is a legitimate exposure concern, especially for infants and young children, but it is not proof of brain injury, developmental damage, or a dangerous risk from every mattress. Here is what the research actually found and how parents can respond without compromising safe sleep.

What the two studies actually found
The headline appears to combine real findings about chemical exposure with a conclusion the research did not establish. The studies found that children’s mattresses can emit semivolatile chemicals and that concentrations of some compounds may be higher close to the sleeping surface than elsewhere in a bedroom. They did not test children’s brains, development, behavior, blood, or urine.
Study 1: emissions from 16 new children’s mattresses
In the first 2025 study, Vaezafshar and colleagues tested 16 newly purchased children’s mattresses in the laboratory. They looked for 45 semivolatile organic compounds, or SVOCs, in four broad groups:
#1 Best Overall
- Pressure Relieving Plush Contouring Memory Foam: Designed for use over your existing mattress, high‑density gel‑infused plush memory foam hugs your body curves to minimize pressure points for restful sleep. Plus, each topper comes with a limited warranty, giving you lasting comfort and peace of mind for years to come
- Easy Setup & Versatile Use: Vacuum-compressed for convenient delivery and storage. Simply unroll and allow 24–48 hours for full expansion in a ventilated area before use. Perfect for upgrading various standard existing mattresses, delivering enhanced comfort and support. This topper is designed solely as a mattress overlay and cannot be used alone as a standalone bed
- ortho-phthalates, which can be used as plasticizers;
- organophosphate esters, which may be used as flame retardants and/or plasticizers;
- benzophenones; and
- salicylates and related additives.
Twelve compounds were detected under room-temperature conditions. When the researchers simulated body temperature, the number rose to 20. When they simulated both body temperature and body weight, 21 compounds were detected. The purpose of those simulations was to examine how conditions at the sleeping surface could affect emissions; they were not measurements of what a particular child absorbed.
One mattress exceeded a Canadian regulatory limit for di-n-butyl phthalate. Several others exceeded 0.1% for phthalates regulated in children’s toys under the Canadian framework used by the researchers, although those limits did not specifically apply to mattresses. The study concluded that mattresses can contribute to chemical exposure in a child’s sleeping microenvironment.
That is an exposure finding, not a diagnosis. The experiment did not measure children’s health, neurological development, cognition, behavior, or disease. It also involved only 16 mattresses, so it cannot establish that every children’s mattress emits the same substances or at the same level.
Study 2: chemical measurements in children’s homes
The companion study examined real sleeping environments rather than mattresses in a laboratory. Researchers recruited 21 parents and 25 children between 6 months and 4 years of age in the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa. The homes were studied during 2022 and 2023.
For seven days, passive samplers were placed in three locations:
- the general bedroom air;
- on the mattress in the child’s sleeping area; and
- under the sheet, representing the sleeping microenvironment closest to the child.
The researchers analyzed 51 semivolatile compounds. They detected:
| Sampling location | Compounds detected |
|---|---|
| Bedroom-air samplers | 28 |
| Sleeping-microenvironment samplers | 31 |
| Mattress samplers | 30 |
Several phthalates and organophosphate esters were present at higher concentrations in the sleeping microenvironment than in room air. The mattress samplers also suggested that mattresses were a source of some compounds.

However, the study did not show that the mattress was the only source. Bedding, textiles, foam-based products, flooring, furniture, and other bedroom items can also contribute chemicals to indoor environments. The researchers’ results support the idea that the area immediately around a sleeping child may have a different chemical profile from the wider bedroom, but they do not assign all of that exposure to one product.
Do these studies show that mattresses damage children’s brains?
No. Neither study measured brain injury or neurological outcomes. They did not test cognition, attention, behavior, brain structure, developmental milestones, or diagnoses such as ADHD or autism. The in-home study measured chemicals in environmental samplers, not chemicals in the participating children.
There is a broader scientific reason to study some of these chemical groups. Reviews of organophosphate esters and certain flame-retardant chemicals describe evidence from animal research and some human studies suggesting possible effects involving neurodevelopment, cognition, behavior, endocrine function, respiratory health, and other outcomes. But those findings vary according to the particular chemical, the dose, the route and timing of exposure, and the study design. Evidence about a chemical class cannot automatically prove that a specific mattress caused brain damage.
Four terms help keep the evidence in proportion:
| Term | Meaning here |
|---|---|
| Hazard | Whether a chemical can cause harm under some conditions. |
| Exposure | Whether a child encounters a chemical, by what route, and at what dose. |
| Risk | The likelihood of harm at the actual exposure level. |
| Causation | Evidence that a particular mattress caused a particular health outcome. |
The two mattress studies provide useful evidence about potential exposure and possible sources. They do not establish mattress-specific risk or causation of neurological injury.
Why researchers pay particular attention to infants and young children
Concern about early-life exposure is biologically plausible even though these studies did not demonstrate harm. Infants and young children may spend more time close to indoor surfaces than adults, have frequent hand-to-mouth behavior, and have developing physiological systems. A sleeping child’s face and breathing zone may also be close to the mattress and bedding for many hours.
The in-home study focused on children from 6 months to 4 years, an age range in which those exposure pathways are relevant. That makes the research worth following. It still does not prove that the measured environmental concentrations caused developmental problems in the children who participated.
What kinds of chemicals were detected?
The labels used in the studies describe broad chemical groups, not single toxicity profiles. Two mattresses that both contain an “organophosphate ester,” for example, may contain different compounds with different uses and toxicological evidence.

It is not accurate to describe every detected compound as equally toxic, or to treat the detection of a compound as proof that it is present at a harmful dose. Compound-specific exposure and toxicity information would be needed to make a more precise risk assessment.
What U.S. crib-mattress rules do—and do not—mean
In the United States, crib mattresses are subject to mandatory product-safety requirements. These rules address issues including firmness, dimensions, entrapment hazards, labeling, lead, phthalates in applicable child-care articles, and flammability.
Those requirements are important, but they are not the same thing as a guarantee that a mattress has zero chemical emissions. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission rules are principally product-safety and fire-safety standards. A compliant mattress is not necessarily free of every semivolatile compound, and compliance alone does not establish that a product has no possible health risk.
The Canadian findings also should not be presented as proof that the same mattresses violate U.S. law. Regulations differ by country, product category, chemical, and intended use. The Canadian study’s comparison with toy-related phthalate limits is a regulatory context for that research, not a direct legal conclusion about every mattress sold in the United States.
What parents can do without creating a new safe-sleep hazard
The evidence does not justify throwing away every child’s mattress or panicking about ordinary use. A sensible response is to put established sleep safety first, then consider emissions and materials when buying or replacing a product.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Preserve the fundamentals of safe sleep
- For an infant crib, use a mattress that is firm and flat.
- Verify that it fits the crib correctly, without dangerous gaps at the edges.
- Use a product intended and approved for that crib and sleep setting.
- Do not replace a firm crib mattress with a soft, improvised, ill-fitting, or heavily padded surface because of chemical concerns.
A chemical-reduction strategy that increases suffocation, entrapment, overheating, or fall risk is not an improvement.
2. Look for specific, verifiable information when buying
Do not rely only on phrases such as “natural,” “clean,” “eco-friendly,” or “non-toxic.” Check the exact model’s current certifications, materials, fire-barrier construction, and safe-sleep compliance.
Rank #4
- foam mattress topper
A GREENGUARD Gold crib mattress may be a useful product category to investigate because GREENGUARD Gold addresses tested chemical emissions from the finished product and uses more stringent criteria intended to account for sensitive populations, including children. It does not mean that every chemical is absent, that the mattress is made entirely from natural materials, or that the product is risk-free. Verify that the certification applies to the exact model and not merely to a product line or a different size.
An organic crib mattress may appeal to parents who want particular materials or manufacturing standards, but “organic” does not by itself establish low emissions, proper crib fit, or the absence of all chemicals. GOTS, GOLS, and MADE SAFE address different aspects of materials, processing, or chemical restrictions. They are not interchangeable with finished-product emissions testing. Read what each certification actually covers.
3. Read the full materials disclosure
Ask what the mattress core, cover, adhesives, waterproofing layer, and fire barrier contain. A mattress can have a low-emission certification while still containing polyurethane foam or other synthetic materials. Conversely, a mattress marketed around organic materials may not provide finished-product emissions data.
Neither construction material nor a certification label should be treated as a complete health verdict. The most useful combination is a correctly fitting, appropriately firm mattress; a clear materials disclosure; and independent, model-specific testing where available.
4. Ventilate a new mattress according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Allowing a new mattress to air out in a suitable, well-ventilated space may reduce odors and some emissions. The studies do not establish a universal airing-out period that makes every mattress safe, and ventilation should not be advertised as removing all phthalates, flame retardants, or other additives.
Do not place an infant on a mattress before following the manufacturer’s setup instructions, and do not use heat, solvents, sprays, or other DIY treatments to try to remove chemicals.

5. Treat protectors as safety-critical accessories
A waterproof cover can make cleaning easier, but it must not create softness, bunching, overheating, or gaps between the mattress and crib. If you buy a crib mattress protector, check that it is designed for the exact mattress and crib, remains tightly fitted, and does not alter the firm, flat sleep surface. The in-home study found that bedding and other materials can contribute to the sleeping environment, so the protector’s own materials and any chemical-emissions claims deserve scrutiny too.
6. Do not mistake an air monitor for a chemical test
Common consumer indoor-air monitors may measure particles, carbon dioxide, humidity, total VOC proxies, or selected gases. They generally cannot identify the specific phthalates, organophosphate esters, benzophenones, or salicylates examined in these studies. A normal reading therefore cannot confirm that a mattress is free of the compounds studied, and an odor does not quantify exposure.
7. Replace a mattress for established safety reasons
Consider replacement if the mattress is damaged, no longer fits correctly, has lost the required firmness, has been recalled, or is not approved for the child’s sleep setting. The 2025 studies do not provide a basis for a blanket recommendation that all existing mattresses be discarded solely because they may emit chemicals.

Claims the evidence does not support
- “The study proves mattresses damage children’s brains.”
- “Every children’s mattress is toxic.”
- “Airing out a mattress removes the chemicals.”
- “Organic means chemical-free.”
- “GREENGUARD Gold means zero chemicals.”
- “A particular mattress prevents ADHD, autism, asthma, cognitive impairment, or brain injury.”
Those statements go beyond the research. The defensible conclusion is narrower: children’s mattresses and nearby bedroom products can contribute to exposure to semivolatile chemicals, young children may warrant particular attention because of how they sleep and interact with indoor surfaces, and the possible health implications require further compound-specific and health-outcome research.

What research would answer the remaining questions?
The current studies establish that emissions and exposure exist, but several questions remain open. Researchers would need larger and more representative samples of mattresses and homes, repeated measurements over time, compound-specific dose estimates, and biological samples from children. Longitudinal studies would also be needed to examine whether measured exposures are associated with later developmental or neurological outcomes while accounting for other household and environmental factors.
Until that evidence exists, parents should neither dismiss chemical exposure research nor turn it into a claim of proven brain damage. The most rational approach is layered protection: use a safe sleep surface first, choose transparent products when replacing a mattress, consider credible finished-product emissions certification, and avoid health promises that the studies cannot support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do these studies prove that children’s mattresses cause brain damage?
No. The studies did not measure children’s brains, neurological development, cognition, behavior, blood, or urine. They measured chemicals emitted by mattresses and detected in bedroom sleeping environments. Nothing in the research supports discarding every children’s mattress.
Does GREENGUARD Gold mean a crib mattress is chemical-free?
Not necessarily. GREENGUARD Gold indicates that a finished product has been tested against chemical-emissions criteria, but it does not mean that every chemical is absent or that the product has zero health risk. Confirm that the certification applies to the exact mattress model.

Ventilation may reduce odors and some emissions, but the studies do not establish one airing-out period that removes all phthalates, flame retardants, or other additives from every mattress. Follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions and do not use DIY chemical treatments.
Can I use a mattress protector in an infant’s crib?
Only if it remains firm, flat, tightly fitted, and approved for the crib. A protector must not create gaps, softness, bunching, or overheating. Check the accessory’s fit and materials rather than assuming any waterproof cover is suitable.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2025 research found chemical emissions from some children’s mattresses and higher concentrations of some compounds near sleeping surfaces. It did not show that mattresses harm children’s brains. Keep safe-sleep requirements—firmness, flatness, and correct fit—at the top of the list, then consider exact-model emissions certification and full materials disclosure when shopping.
