They work best in an enclosed tent, van, RV, boat cabin, truck sleeper, bedroom zone, or outage cooling room where you can route hot exhaust outdoors. What qualifies as a battery-powered air conditioner?
A genuine portable AC uses a compressor refrigeration cycle to remove heat and moisture. It normally needs an intake and hot-air exhaust path. That is different from:

- A battery fan: improves perceived comfort but does not lower the room’s air temperature.
- An AC powered by a power station: the setup is battery-powered even when the air-conditioner chassis contains no battery. WAVE 2 is a prominent example.
Can one cool an entire room?
Usually only a small, enclosed room or personal zone. EcoFlow presents WAVE 2 for approximately 107–110 square feet, while ZERO BREEZE lists roughly 100–150 square feet for Mark 3. These are manufacturer guidance, not guarantees. Outdoor temperature, humidity, insulation, solar load, occupants, air leaks and exhaust routing can change the result substantially.

An open campsite, large uninsulated room or sun-heated vehicle is a poor match. A sealed sleeping area or cabin is much more realistic.
Cooling capacity: how many BTUs do you need?
The headline figures below are rated manufacturer capacities, not a promise that each unit performs like a similarly labeled conventional portable AC in every room.

Prioritize the unit’s ability to maintain a comfortable temperature in a sealed space, not just the coldness of air at the outlet.

The Mark 3 combines a relatively light AC chassis with a removable 1,022-Wh battery. Its dual-hose design separates intake and exhaust, and the system supports wall, vehicle and solar charging, pass-through charging and sequential battery use. Optional vehicle, boat, tent and universal window venting kits help adapt it to different shelters.
The important portability figure is the complete core package: about 22 lb for the AC plus about 14 lb for one battery, or approximately 36 lb before hoses, chargers and adapters. The product page also lists an active drain system and automatic pump.
It is a strong fit when mobility and modular batteries matter. It is a poor fit if you need the lowest total cost, large-room cooling or a simple plug-in appliance.

Best higher-output smart option: EcoFlow WAVE 3
WAVE 3 has the highest stated cooling output in this comparison at 6,100 BTU and also provides 6,800 BTU of stated heating capacity. EcoFlow lists app control, an insulated exhaust duct and a 1,024-Wh LFP add-on battery, with up to eight hours of wireless use depending on mode and conditions.

The battery is an add-on rather than an assumption that the base AC is cordless. This model makes the most sense for buyers already using EcoFlow power equipment or those who value heating and smart controls alongside cooling. The reviewed official page did not provide a current price, so do not infer one.
When the EcoFlow WAVE 2 still makes sense
WAVE 2 remains relevant for its 5,100-BTU cooling, 6,100-BTU heating, app and EcoFlow power-station compatibility. EcoFlow lists 44–56 dB depending on operating conditions, and the AC unit weighs about 32 lb without its battery.
The U.S. product page showed $599 for an AC-only configuration and $799 for a battery bundle, with higher charging bundles also listed. It showed those configurations as sold out when checked on August 18, 2026. Treat those figures as dated page observations, not a promise of current stock or price. A remaining unit at a substantial discount may suit an existing EcoFlow owner; buyers needing an included battery, immediate availability or a light complete setup should look elsewhere.
Battery runtime: use watt-hours, not marketing maximums
A practical estimate is:
Runtime (hours) ≈ usable battery watt-hours × inverter/DC efficiency ÷ average AC watts
For illustration, a 1,024-Wh battery at 85% usable efficiency powering a 300-W average load gives about 2.9 hours. At a 150-W average load, it gives about 5.8 hours. These are examples, not test results. Compressor cycling, ambient heat, set temperature, fan speed, battery age and simultaneous charging all matter.

EcoFlow advertises up to eight hours for WAVE 3 and WAVE 2 with their add-on batteries. ZERO BREEZE lists a 1,022-Wh battery and sequential battery support. “Up to eight hours” should be read as a manufacturer-stated, mode-dependent maximum—not eight hours of continuous maximum cooling.

Every compressor AC must reject the heat it removes. A hot exhaust hose dumping into the same enclosure can erase much of the cooling benefit.
Tent
Use a dedicated tent port or compatible adapter, keep the enclosure as sealed as practical and place intake and exhaust paths so hot air cannot recirculate.
Van, RV, boat or truck
Plan a window, wall or custom panel for ducting. Keep the exhaust away from interior openings and allow room for the battery, hoses and drainage.
Bedroom or outage room
Use a window insert or other outdoor exhaust route. “Installation-free” means no permanent installation; it does not mean efficient refrigeration without heat management.
Humidity, condensation and drainage
Cooling and heating can create water. EcoFlow says WAVE 2’s no-drain cooling function applies when humidity is below 70%; heating still needs drainage. ZERO BREEZE advertises an active drain system and automatic pump. In humid weather, prepare a drain hose, container or safe discharge route and check the unit during overnight use. Never assume “no drain” means no condensation in every climate or operating mode.

Practical buying checklist
- Confirm whether the battery is included, removable and replaceable.
- Calculate the full carry weight: AC, battery, ducts, adapters, charger, drain hose and case.
- Identify exactly where hot intake and exhaust air will go.
- Plan condensation drainage for your humidity and operating mode.
- Estimate required hours using watt-hours and average watts rather than the maximum-runtime headline.
- Check AC, vehicle and solar charging compatibility, including pass-through operation.
- Measure and insulate the cooling zone; account for sunlight, occupants and air leakage.
- Add the price of batteries, vent kits, solar equipment, chargers, replacement batteries, shipping and taxes to the AC price.
- Verify current stock and bundle contents, particularly for WAVE 2.
Using one during a power outage
- Choose one small enclosed room or cooling zone, prioritizing anyone medically vulnerable.
- Pre-cool it while grid power is available.
- Close blinds, doors and other heat-gain paths.
- Route exhaust outdoors before switching to battery operation.
- Use sleep or eco mode when acceptable.
- Monitor battery state and condensate drainage.
- Keep a low-power fan available as a fallback.
These systems provide localized relief, not whole-home cooling. Keep batteries protected from excessive heat and moisture and follow the manufacturer’s charging and operating-temperature limits.

Recommendations by buyer
- Tent, van, boat or overlanding portability: ZERO BREEZE Mark 3, provided the roughly 36-lb AC-and-battery core package plus accessories is acceptable.
