DEWALT says its DALE robot has saved 190 weeks across 26 data-center construction phases while drilling more than 230,000 concrete holes. The machine is now commercially available for order, according to the company’s July 9, 2026 announcement. But the headline needs a qualification: DALE is designed to accelerate one repetitive task—downward concrete drilling—not to build an entire data center autonomously.
The performance figures are company-reported pilot results, and the available announcements do not include an independent audit, full test methodology, public pricing, or enough baseline data to establish how much the robot reduces total project cost or duration.

What DALE is—and what it is not
DALE is a mobile, autonomous, downward-drilling construction robot developed through a collaboration between DEWALT, a Stanley Black & Decker brand, and August Robotics.
It is built for a narrow but high-volume job: drilling repeated holes into concrete slabs for server-rack stops, structural legs, and supports for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. It is not a humanoid robot, a general-purpose construction machine, or a fully autonomous data-center builder.

Its “fleet-capable” design means multiple machines can be coordinated through shared robotics and fleet-management technology. That is different from simply leaving one machine to drill a localized area. A fleet could, in principle, work across separate zones of a large facility, although DEWALT has not publicly stated how many DALE units can operate simultaneously.
Why repetitive drilling matters on a data-center project
Data centers often contain large floor areas with highly repeated equipment layouts. Those layouts can require thousands of accurately positioned anchor holes and support points. Conventional drilling is flexible, but it also involves physically demanding, repetitive work and coordination between layout, drilling, cleanup, inspection, and installation crews.
A typical sequence looks like this:
- Concrete surfaces are prepared and the drilling plan is validated.
- Required hole locations and depths are marked or provided digitally.
- DALE drills the specified holes and manages dust extraction.
- Dust and debris are removed and the work is inspected.
- Anchors, rack supports, structural legs, or MEP supports are installed.
- Mechanical, electrical, and equipment-installation work proceeds.
Drilling is only one step, but it can be an enabling step. If it sits on the critical path, completing it sooner may allow later trades to start earlier. If it has schedule float, DALE may improve productivity in that work package without shortening the overall facility schedule.

What DEWALT says the robot can do
In its July announcement, DEWALT said DALE can drill at speeds of up to 10 times those of traditional methods. The company also highlighted fast-swap batteries, remote monitoring, automatic dust extraction, and AI-enhanced quality assurance.
Those features could improve machine utilization and reduce the amount of direct handheld drilling required. However, the public release does not specify battery runtime, repositioning time, drill-bit life, operating conditions, supervision requirements, or the technical basis for the AI quality-assurance claim.

“Up to 10×” should therefore be read as a maximum company claim about drilling performance—not as an average result, a full-operation throughput figure, a labor-cost reduction, or a project-level construction multiplier.

The later figures should not automatically be treated as a like-for-like improvement over the January results. They may reflect additional work, a longer pilot, or a broader definition of projects and phases. The releases do not provide enough methodology to determine the precise relationship between the two datasets.
What the evidence proves—and what it does not
The available evidence is primarily vendor-reported pilot data. DEWALT says the work involved a leading hyperscaler or major technology company, but the customer is not identified in the cited announcements. No independent audit or complete test protocol is provided.

The 190 weeks saved figure is an aggregate across 26 construction phases. It is not the time saved on one data center, and the release does not show a controlled comparison against a conventional crew. Schedule results can also be influenced by staffing, sequencing, site access, design changes, and other workflow improvements.

The 99.97% accuracy figure is described in terms of hole location and depth, but the public materials do not define the acceptable tolerance or inspection method. Nor do they state the exact denominator, whether a failure in either location or depth counts as inaccurate, or how corrected and re-drilled holes were treated.
For example, applying 0.03% to 230,000 holes would produce roughly 69 holes, but that is only an illustrative calculation—not an official error count. Without the underlying dataset and definition of accuracy, it would be misleading to present it as one.
Similarly, a meaningful “10×” comparison would need to identify hole diameter and depth, concrete and reinforcement conditions, holes per shift, repositioning time, battery changes, cleanup, supervision, conventional crew size, inspection, and rework. Those details are not included in the cited releases.

One autonomous drill can increase output in a defined work area. A fleet-capable system is intended to extend that benefit across a large, repetitive site.
Multiple robots could be assigned to different zones or work sequences while being monitored through shared orchestration software. That may be particularly useful on large data-center footprints, where a single machine could become a bottleneck. The practical benefit depends on whether the site has enough ready-to-drill work, clear travel paths, compatible digital layouts, and staff able to supervise the operation.
Fleet capability does not remove the need for people. Workers remain necessary for setup, surveying, safety control, battery and bit changes, maintenance, inspection, material handling, anchoring, and exceptions. The available materials do not establish the maximum fleet size, utilization rate, or communications-failure procedure.

Labor and safety implications
DEWALT positions DALE as a way to reduce manual drilling, vibration, dust exposure, and repetitive physical work. That could be valuable where contractors face shortages of skilled labor or need to limit prolonged handheld-tool use.
But automation is not the same as eliminating construction labor or risk. Human crews still need to prepare the site, verify the plan, keep work areas clear, inspect results, and respond when the robot encounters an obstruction or incorrect input.
Autonomous equipment also introduces its own controls, including exclusion zones, machine movement procedures, emergency stops, remote supervision, battery handling, maintenance, and coordination with other trades. The public announcements do not provide quantified injury-rate reductions, exposure measurements, or a third-party safety assessment. A robot may shift some risk from handheld drilling to logistics, maintenance, and jobsite coordination rather than remove it entirely.

The major status change is that DALE is no longer presented solely as a planned pilot technology. DEWALT said on July 9, 2026 that it was commercially available for order.
That does not mean it is a conventional retail product with a published price. The cited materials do not disclose a purchase price, rental or leasing terms, robot-as-a-service plan, software subscription, training cost, maintenance arrangement, or standard deployment package. A prospective customer should expect an enterprise or commercial-sales inquiry rather than an ordinary online checkout.
Before committing to a deployment, a contractor or developer should ask:

Where DALE is likely to fit
DALE is most compelling when a project has tens of thousands of similar holes, broad and accessible concrete work areas, stable digital layouts, and a schedule in which drilling constrains follow-on work.
It may be a poor fit when hole volumes are low, layouts change frequently, surfaces are congested or irregular, access is restricted, or drilling is not on the critical path. A small project may be better served by a conventional crew or specialist drilling subcontractor.
Other workflow choices include semi-automated drilling with digital layout and guided positioning, or designing inserts, sleeves, and anchors into the concrete pour. Pre-pour solutions can avoid some post-pour drilling, but they require earlier design certainty and shift coordination into formwork, reinforcement, procurement, and tolerance control.
The unanswered questions
DALE is a credible example of narrow construction automation, but its public launch materials leave important questions unanswered:
- Who was the unnamed hyperscaler, and what site conditions did the pilot involve?
- What conventional crew and equipment provided the baseline?
- What exactly counts as an accurate hole?
- How much of the reported schedule reduction is attributable specifically to the robot?
- What is the average, rather than maximum, drilling throughput?
- How many machines can operate as a coordinated fleet?
- What are the total deployment and operating costs?
- How does the system perform around reinforcement, embedded services, congestion, and design changes?
- What level of human supervision is required in live construction environments?
The Bottom Line
DALE could make a meaningful difference on large data-center projects with repetitive drilling, digital planning, open work areas, and schedule-critical anchor work. DEWALT’s reported 190 weeks saved, 230,000-plus holes, 99.97% accuracy, and up-to-10× drilling-speed claim are significant signals—but they remain company-reported figures with limited public methodology. The robot can automate a bottleneck; it cannot independently build a data center, and its real commercial value will depend on site conditions, integration, supervision, and undisclosed economics.
