Designing Cozy Spaces for Restful Play: A Builder’s Guide to Connected Retreats

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A child who steps away from energetic play may not be finished. A small retreat can let them recover from noise, movement, thinking or social pressure while they watch what is happening and choose when to return. The best cozy space is intimate without being cut off: it sits near the action, remains in a caregiver’s sightline and offers enough comfort and privacy for a genuine pause.

For a home, childcare setting or play landscape, build the retreat as part of the play route rather than as a separate destination. Use the guidance below to select a location, size and level of enclosure, then check how children actually use it. The aim is a place to regulate and observe, not a place that forces isolation.

Why a quiet pause can still be play

Chad Kennedy’s American Society of Landscape Architects article describes a four-year-old who left a crowded bounce house, watched from a small enclosed spot and later returned to the activity. The child was not necessarily bored or finished. The retreat created time to recover from stimulation and to decide whether rejoining felt right.

This distinction matters when you are planning or building a play area. Adults often read withdrawal as a request to end the activity, then remove the child or redirect them. A connected cozy space offers another option: the child can remain part of the social scene at a tolerable distance. Watching, listening, touching a comfortable surface or simply sitting can all be meaningful participation.

Private space also supports reflection and identity. Kennedy attributes this statement to Louis Torelli: “Being alone provides time essential for reflection and growth…Private spaces…support the development of the young child’s self-concept and personal identity. They assist all ages in understanding the ‘I’ in relation to the ‘Thou.’” The quotation appears in Kennedy’s 2014 article, which cites Torelli’s 1992 chapter; it is not a current regulation or clinical standard.

Five design principles for a connected retreat

1. Keep the caregiver’s view open

Place the nook where a caregiver can see the child directly from the normal supervision position. Sightlines should not depend on standing on tiptoe, walking around a structure or opening a door. A low wall, open front, window, gap between uprights or transparent panel can create a sense of boundary without hiding the occupant.

Walk the proposed route at a child’s height as well as an adult’s. Check the view from seating, from the main play area and from the place where a caregiver is most likely to pause. Recheck after adding cushions, planting, storage or seasonal shade; those additions can obscure a previously clear view.

2. Put it near activity, but outside the traffic lane

A retreat should be close enough for a child to follow the game and return without crossing a hazardous or congested route. Set it beside, rather than inside, the path used for running, wheeled toys or equipment queues. Kennedy specifically identifies distance from high-traffic lanes as a consideration.

Map the busiest movements at different times of day. A location that is calm in the morning may become a shortcut later. Leave a readable approach so a child can enter and leave without squeezing between moving players. The retreat should feel connected, not like an island at the edge of the site.

3. Create intimacy without making access difficult

Children often prefer a small, bounded place that feels secure. A roof, side panels, a curved wall, a recess or a change in level can provide that feeling. Avoid turning the enclosure into a dead end or a locked compartment. A child should be able to enter, exit and rejoin play independently whenever the setting and supervision plan allow.

Think in terms of perceived isolation rather than maximum enclosure. Two sides may be enough for one child; a shallow alcove may suit another. The right degree of separation varies with age, temperament and the intensity of nearby play.

4. Add physical comfort and something to notice

Kennedy lists tactile contact as a useful feature. A back rest, foot rest, broad ledge or textured surface can make a short pause more comfortable. Interesting textures or a small, safe activity give the child something to explore while observing.

Comfort does not require elaborate equipment. A firm seat, a warm-to-touch material in cool weather, a shaded surface and a place to lean may be sufficient. Select finishes that can be cleaned in the intended setting and inspect them for splinters, sharp edges, trapped fingers and other site-specific hazards before use.

5. Offer more than one way to watch

Children differ in how close they want to be, how much they want to see and whether they prefer to sit high or low. Provide variety in location, elevation and size when the project permits. One child may choose a low nook beside the sand area; another may prefer a raised perch with a broad view.

How large should a cozy space be?

Kennedy reports observations by Gary Moore suggesting that cozy-space groups are fewer than five children, most often two or one, and gives a size of 36–60 square feet. This figure was reported in the 2014 article, not established as a building code, universal standard or independently verified current finding. Treat it as a planning reference, then adjust for the intended users, furniture and circulation.

Planning question How to use the reported guidance
Typical social scale Plan first for solitary use or a pair; a group of fewer than five is the reported upper pattern, not a required capacity.
Area reference 36–60 square feet is the range Kennedy attributes to Moore’s observations. It is a recommendation reported in that article, not a code minimum.
Furniture and movement Subtract the footprint of seats, cushions or built-in features from usable standing and exit space; do not fill the entire area with objects.
Adaptation Use a smaller or larger footprint when the child’s age, accessibility needs, supervision arrangement or site circulation calls for it.

For a construction drawing, show the retreat’s inside dimensions, entry width, clear approach and caregiver viewing points. The useful measurement is not just floor area; it is the amount of comfortable space left after the child sits, turns and leaves.

Formats that can deliver the same function

The source names several physical expressions of the idea, from landscape elements to manufactured furnishings. The comparison below uses the article’s decision axes rather than ranking products.

Format Visibility and access Comfort or exploration Best planning use
Open alcove or low-wall nook Usually offers the clearest view and easiest entry. Add a back rest, ledge or varied texture. Indoor rooms, covered patios or play areas where supervision is constant.
Bench with side panels Front remains visible while the sides create a boundary. Seat and foot support are built in. A durable pause point beside, but not in, a circulation route.
Cubby or short tunnel Can feel secure; openings must face the supervision position. Curved surfaces and changing views invite observation. Sites that need a more enclosed retreat without a closable room.
Grouping of boulders or landscape forms Visibility depends on height, spacing and planting. Natural textures and varied elevations provide tactile interest. Outdoor landscapes where the retreat should blend into the setting.
Loose blankets or boxes Children can reconfigure the boundary, but adults must monitor the arrangement. High imaginative value and easy change. Homes or programs where loose materials are available; they may not be practical in public play settings.
Child-sized play tent Potentially private, so place the opening toward the caregiver and keep the structure accessible. Soft enclosure can make a brief rest inviting. One possible implementation of the concept, not a source-endorsed product or required solution.

Step-by-step planning and construction process

1. Observe the existing play pattern

Watch where children run, queue, gather and retreat before fixing the location. Note when crowding or noise peaks. Identify the supervision point used in practice, not merely the point shown on a plan. Record the view from that point to the proposed retreat.

2. Mark activity and traffic zones

On the plan, draw the active-play footprint and the high-traffic lanes around it. Reserve a calm edge for the retreat, with a direct approach that does not require crossing the main running line. If the site has more than one activity zone, choose a position that lets a child watch at least one familiar activity.

3. Choose the enclosure level

Start with the least enclosure that gives the desired sense of security. Test a low wall, side screens, a roof or a recess in a temporary mock-up. Confirm that a seated child remains visible and that an adult can reach the space without dismantling anything.

4. Set the footprint and elevations

Use the 36–60-square-foot observation as a reference only, then draw the actual seat, back support, foot rest and entry. If you provide more than one retreat, vary the size or height so children can choose between a low, close view and a broader, slightly elevated view. Keep the approach and exit legible at every level.

5. Select materials for the setting

For a permanent installation, choose robust surfaces appropriate to the interior or exterior location and detail edges so they are comfortable to touch. For a home or supervised program, blankets and boxes can create a changing nook. In a public setting, loose materials may be unavailable or difficult to manage, so built-in benches, cubbies or landscape elements may be more workable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Build in shade and thermal comfort

Where possible, place the retreat in shade or provide overhead protection that does not block the caregiver’s view. Check the surface and seat at the hottest and coolest times of the day. A retreat that is technically available but uncomfortable will not serve its purpose.

7. Walk the finished space from three viewpoints

  1. Child’s viewpoint: sit or crouch inside and confirm that nearby play is visible without being overwhelming.
  2. Caregiver’s viewpoint: stand at the normal supervision position and verify an unobstructed view of the child’s face and entry.
  3. Moving-player viewpoint: follow the busiest route and check that runners do not collide with the retreat or its approach.

8. Observe use and adjust

After installation, watch whether children choose the space alone, in pairs or not at all. Look for patterns: a retreat may need more shade, a clearer opening, a different distance from the loudest activity or another size option. Adjust movable elements first; alter permanent construction only after the use pattern is clear.

Details that preserve connection

  • Open the view toward the action: orient the broadest opening toward the activity a child is most likely to observe.
  • Protect the quiet side: use a wall, planting or a change in orientation to soften passing movement without hiding the child.
  • Provide a comfortable contact point: a back rest or foot rest can turn a short stop into a usable pause.
  • Keep the entry obvious: a child should not need to climb over furniture or ask an adult to release them.
  • Use texture intentionally: contrast in surface, temperature or pattern can support quiet exploration, provided the material is suitable for the environment.
  • Design for more than one occupant when appropriate: a pair-sized seat can support companionship, while a smaller nook preserves the option of solitude.

Home, childcare and public settings

At home

A blanket draped over sturdy furniture or a cardboard-box nook can be changed as interests shift. Keep the opening visible from the room where supervision normally occurs, and move the materials if they begin to obstruct a doorway or busy route. The informality is a benefit: children can help build and redesign the retreat.

In childcare or supervised indoor play

Use a durable, cleanable structure with a clear view from staff positions. Provide more than one option if several children may need a pause at once. Make the retreat part of the room’s activity map rather than placing it behind storage or at the end of a corridor.

In public play landscapes

Loose blankets and boxes may not be available, so use fixed features such as a bench, cubby, tube or grouping of boulders. Grade, planting, shade and elevation can create intimacy, but each feature must be checked from the actual supervision points. A landscape retreat should be easy to find, easy to leave and close enough to the play area to retain its social connection.

What this guidance establishes—and what it does not

Kennedy’s article, first published in an O’Dell Engineering February 2014 mailer and posted by ASLA on April 8, 2014, is professional design guidance. It is not a current regulation, a clinical guideline or a population-level study. The 36–60-square-foot figure and the fewer-than-five group pattern are attributed observations, and the cited Moore article and Torelli anthology were not independently reviewed for this article. Use the ideas to frame design decisions, then apply the rules, inspections and accessibility requirements that govern your particular building or play setting.

The practical test is straightforward: can a child pause in a space that feels small and secure, still see or hear the play they may want to rejoin, and remain within a caregiver’s dependable view? If the answer changes with the time of day, season or crowd level, revise the location, enclosure or number of retreat options rather than assuming the child has lost interest.
