Creating Brick Patios: A Complete Plan for Base, Drainage, and Paver Installation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a brick patio as a compacted, drained assembly—not as bricks laid on soil. Set the footprint and finished elevation, excavate for the pavers plus bedding and base, compact a suitable aggregate subgrade, screed an even bedding layer, place and cut the units, secure exposed edges, and fill the joints with a compatible product. Soil, climate, drainage, expected loads, and whether you are using clay brick pavers or concrete pavers determine the details, so the dimensions below are guidance for particular installation systems rather than a universal design.

Decide what you are building before you dig

Choose the paving unit and its installation system

“Brick patio” can describe two different products. Clay brick pavers are fired masonry units; concrete pavers are molded paving units. They may look similar, but their dimensions, thicknesses, allowable joint widths, edge details, and manufacturer instructions are not interchangeable. The Brick Industry Association’s technical note, dated May 2017, specifically addresses clay pavers installed on a sand setting bed: Technical Notes on Brick Construction: Paving Systems Using Clay Pavers on a Sand Setting Bed.

Decision point Clay brick pavers Concrete pavers
Intended use Confirm that the selected clay unit is rated for exterior paving and the loads expected on your patio. Use a unit and installation system identified by its manufacturer for outdoor paving and the planned loading.
Dimensions and thickness Not stated as a universal value; use the dimensions of the specified clay product. Not stated as a universal value; use the dimensions and thickness in the selected concrete-paver system.
Color and finish Choose from the actual fired color and surface finish; samples can vary by product. Choose the actual molded color and finish; product-specific appearance and weathering information applies.
Pattern and cuts Plan the bond, border, and cuts around the unit size before excavation. Plan the pattern, border, and cuts around the unit size before excavation.
Joint material Use a jointing product compatible with the specified joint width and clay-paver system. Use the concrete-paver manufacturer’s compatible jointing product and installation method.
Base design Design for the soil, drainage, climate, and use; the BIA note covers a sand-setting-bed assembly. Follow the chosen manufacturer’s system; guidance from Belgard and QUIKRETE uses different assumptions and dimensions.

Do not combine a clay-paver specification with a concrete-paver bedding or edge detail simply because the units have a similar appearance. Keep one coherent system from the paver manufacturer or technical guidance, then adjust it for your site.

Set the footprint, height, and water destination

Measure and mark the patio, including borders and any areas around steps, posts, drains, or walls. Establish the finished surface in relation to door thresholds, steps, paths, and adjacent ground before removing soil. Decide the pattern and edge treatment at this stage; doing so shows where full units end and where cuts will be needed.

Plan where runoff will go. The QUIKRETE patio guide illustrates a fall of 1/4 inch for every 12 feet away from structures: Building a Paver or Natural Stone Patio. That is an example from that guide, not a universal prescription for every property. Preserve the planned fall through the compacted base, bedding, and finished surface, and make sure the low side does not discharge toward a foundation or another problem area.

Check local requirements for utility locating before excavation; the process and notice period vary by location. A difficult site—weak or wet soil, a retaining condition, or drainage close to a building—may require advice from a qualified local designer or contractor.

Understand the patio layers

A durable patio is a stack of functions:

  • Prepared subgrade: native soil with vegetation and unsuitable material removed and the surface shaped to the planned grade.
  • Compacted aggregate base: the structural layer that spreads loads and provides a stable platform.
  • Bedding sand: a thin, even setting layer; it is not a substitute for a properly graded and compacted base.
  • Surface units: the clay brick pavers or concrete pavers that form the visible pattern.
  • Edge restraint: a perimeter component that limits lateral movement at exposed edges.
  • Joint material: sand or another compatible product swept into the gaps between units.

The total hole must accommodate every layer. Excavation depth is therefore not the same thing as compacted-base thickness.

How deep should you excavate?

There is no single depth that fits every soil and paver system. The following figures are source-specific examples and must not be added together across systems.

Guidance Stated figure What the figure means
QUIKRETE illustrated approach 4 to 7 inches of excavation An example total excavation range that accounts for a 2-to-4-inch compactable aggregate base, 1-to-2-inch paver-sand layer, and the paver thickness. Publication year was not stated in the cited search result.
QUIKRETE aggregate layer 2 to 4 inches Example compactable base thickness in that guide, not a universal structural design.
QUIKRETE bedding sand 1 to 2 inches Example paver-sand thickness in that guide.
Belgard typical base 4 to 6 inches Typical compacted granular aggregate statement, qualified by soil type and application; publication year was not stated in the cited search result.
Belgard bedding At least 1 inch Minimum bedding-sand statement in its installation guidance, subject to the selected system.

The difference between the two base ranges is not an error to average. It reflects different products, site assumptions, and installation approaches. Use the paver manufacturer’s details and account for soil, climate, drainage, and expected traffic. Measure the actual paver thickness and include it when calculating the cut depth.

Materials and tools checklist

Assemble the system before delivery so the work does not stop with an open excavation. A source-based list from QUIKRETE includes:

  • Outdoor-rated patio pavers appropriate to the selected system
  • Aggregate base material
  • Bedding sand
  • Compatible jointing sand or other specified joint product
  • Edge restraint and stakes
  • String and layout stakes
  • Shovel, level, carpenter’s square, and boards for screeding
  • Tamper for compacting the base
  • Hammer and chisel for planned cuts; larger projects may require different cutting equipment
  • Rubber mallet
  • Hose with a spray attachment
  • Gloves and safety glasses

This is a planning list, not a claim that every patio needs every item. Project size, the number of cuts, and the compaction equipment permitted by the selected system can change it. Pavers and aggregate are bulky; arrange deliveries and a staging area that will not damage the prepared subgrade.

Build the patio step by step

1. Lay out the work

Stake the corners and run string lines to show the finished edges. Check the diagonals or use a carpenter’s square so the layout is truly square where intended. Mark the finished elevation at the house, steps, and low edge. Include the width of borders and the locations of fixtures or obstacles. Dry-plan enough of the pattern to expose awkward slivers before you excavate.

2. Excavate to the calculated depth

Remove turf, roots, organic soil, and any material that cannot support the assembly. Excavate to the planned total depth, not merely to a guessed base thickness. Leave the subgrade at a consistent elevation that allows the aggregate, bedding, and paver layers to finish at the marks. Avoid disturbing firm soil below the design level; if it is disturbed, remove the loose material or recompact it according to the site requirements.

3. Shape and check the subgrade

Use a level and the string lines to establish the intended fall away from structures. The grade should be continuous rather than a series of depressions. Soft or wet spots need to be addressed before aggregate is placed; burying unsuitable soil under stone transfers the problem upward.

4. Place and compact the aggregate base

Spread the selected aggregate to the thickness required by the chosen system. QUIKRETE’s illustrated instructions use a 2-to-4-inch aggregate layer, while Belgard describes a typical 4-to-6-inch compacted granular base and explicitly says depth depends on soil and application. These are not interchangeable specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compact the aggregate thoroughly and maintain the planned slope as you work. On a larger patio, place manageable lifts rather than trying to compact the entire depth at once. Recheck elevations after compaction; the surface must be firm, even, and correctly graded before bedding sand is added.

5. Install edge restraint and verify the drainage line

At exposed edges, install a restraint suited to the paver and base system, using the specified stakes or fasteners. Its job is to resist outward movement of the field; it is not a replacement for a compacted base. Keep the restraint at the correct finished elevation so it does not create a trip edge or hold water.

Run a straightedge or string from the high side to the planned outlet and verify the fall before covering the base. Correcting grade now is far easier than correcting a low spot after the units are installed.

6. Screed the bedding layer

Spread bedding sand and pull a straight board across guides to create a uniform plane. QUIKRETE’s example uses 1 to 2 inches; Belgard calls for at least 1 inch. Use the dimension specified for your system. Do not use extra sand to conceal a hollow, an incorrect slope, or an under-compacted base. Once screeded, avoid walking on the finished bedding surface; place pavers from the working edge so the plane remains intact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Lay the pavers and make cuts

Start at the planned corner or straight edge and work outward. Keep the pattern and joint spacing consistent, checking alignment frequently against the string lines. QUIKRETE recommends setting units outward from a corner and tapping them into place with a rubber mallet. Confirm that advice against the instructions for the actual clay or concrete unit.

Install full units first, then measure and cut border pieces around walls, steps, posts, and drains. Make cuts deliberate and large enough to remain stable; revise the pattern if the perimeter would otherwise be filled with fragile slivers. Keep the finished surface at the established elevations instead of forcing isolated units to match a neighboring mistake.

8. Fill the joints and finish the surface

Sweep the specified jointing material across the surface until the joints are filled. QUIKRETE distinguishes standard jointing sand for joints up to 1/2 inch from its polymeric product for larger joints up to 2 inches. Those limits belong to its products, not to every sand or paver.

Follow the selected product label for dry application, cleanup, wetting, and curing. QUIKRETE describes staged misting for its products; too much water can wash material from the joints, while too little may prevent the product from setting as intended. Belgard describes polymeric sand as a way to lock units and reduce debris and weeds in joints, but compatibility and installation conditions still come from the label.

Prevent the failures that move or sink patios

Symptom Likely process problem Corrective approach
Pavers rock underfoot Uneven bedding, a hollow in the base, or inadequate compaction. Remove the affected units, correct and compact the base, screed a consistent bedding layer, and relay the units. Do not pack extra sand beneath one paver as a permanent fix.
Edges spread outward Missing, loose, or incompatible edge restraint; weak perimeter base. Expose the perimeter, rebuild and compact the base where necessary, and install restraint suited to the system.
Water stands near the house The planned fall was not carried through the base, bedding, or surface, or the low edge has no suitable outlet. Check elevations with a straightedge and string. Regrade the affected assembly rather than relying on joint sand to redirect water.
Joints wash out or remain soft Wrong product for the joint width, incomplete filling, or watering outside the label procedure. Choose a compatible jointing product, refill clean joints, and apply the manufacturer’s specified wetting and curing method.
Pattern ends in awkward narrow pieces Pattern and border were not planned before excavation. Rework the border layout or distribute cuts across the perimeter so pieces remain stable and visually intentional.
Low areas reappear after repair Unsuitable soil or an under-designed base for the site conditions. Investigate soil, drainage, and expected loading; a local qualified professional may need to redesign the assembly.

Use the guidance without mixing systems

Manufacturer instructions are written for their own materials and assumptions. The QUIKRETE example combines a 4-to-7-inch excavation with a 2-to-4-inch base and 1-to-2-inch bedding layer. Belgard’s guidance discusses a typical 4-to-6-inch compacted granular base and at least 1 inch of bedding while qualifying both by soil and application. Select one system, document its required layers, and then check that the finished elevation and drainage work at your property.

For clay pavers on a sand setting bed, consult the Brick Industry Association technical note in addition to the clay-paver manufacturer’s instructions. For a general sequence and tool list, the consumer explanation How to Build a Brick Patio can help visualize the work, but it does not replace local design requirements or the installation instructions for your product.

When a patio needs site-specific design

Pause and obtain qualified local advice when excavation would undermine a foundation, when the patio bears against a retaining wall, when the soil stays saturated or is visibly weak, or when runoff cannot be directed safely away from a building. High pedestrian use, vehicle loading, frost conditions, and unusual drainage can also change the base design. In these cases, a generic depth range is not enough evidence for a safe specification.

A well-built patio is the result of a matched sequence: a suitable subgrade, a compacted and correctly graded base, an even bedding layer, accurately placed pavers, restrained edges, and joints filled with a compatible product. Treat each layer as structural work, not hidden preparation, and the visible pattern will have the support it needs.
