Keep the battery dry and out of direct sun and excessive heat. If the drill stops under load, first release the trigger and let the protection electronics reset; if the pack is cracked, swollen, leaking, or otherwise damaged, stop using it and arrange manufacturer-authorized service.
Battery platforms differ in voltage, connector design, charging temperature, storage state of charge, and electronic protection. The procedures below explain the common principles and show where manufacturer guidance diverges. Your drill, battery, and charger manuals take priority over any general advice.

Identify the battery platform before you plug it in
A charger is not interchangeable simply because its plug fits. Confirm the battery platform, nominal voltage, connector, and model numbers printed on the pack and charger. The drill manual may list the approved battery families; the battery manual may list the permitted chargers. Bosch’s EasyImpact 18V 40 instructions, for example, say to use only the chargers listed for that battery. The same principle applies across other systems: use the charger designed for that manufacturer’s platform and voltage.
Use an authentic, manufacturer-approved pack when the tool maker specifies one. DEWALT’s safety guidance emphasizes authentic batteries for compatibility with its tools and chargers. A visually similar third-party pack can have different temperature sensors, contacts, or protection circuitry, so a successful connection does not prove that charging is safe.

- Read the model and voltage markings on the battery, charger, and drill.
- Check the tool manual for approved battery series and charger numbers.
- Inspect the contacts for dirt or corrosion; do not scrape them with metal objects.
- Do not force a pack into a charger or use an adapter that the manufacturer does not approve.
How to charge a cordless drill battery safely
1. Inspect the pack and charger
Before charging, look for cracks, deformation, punctures, leaking material, melted plastic, burnt smells, or contacts that are loose or discolored. Do not charge a visibly damaged pack. DEWALT states, “Do not use batteries with visible damage or cracks.” Put a damaged battery in a safe, non-combustible location away from children and combustible materials and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service point for instructions.
Check the charger cable, housing, vents, and contacts as well. A damaged charger should be removed from service rather than tested with another battery.
2. Use a suitable charging location
Place the charger on a stable, dry, ventilated surface where its vents are not covered. Keep the battery away from rain, condensation, sawdust piles, solvents, and direct sunlight. Do not charge it inside a hot vehicle or next to a heater. The charger monitors battery conditions, but it cannot make an unsuitable environment safe.
3. Let a hot or cold pack return to its permitted range
Charging-temperature limits are product-specific. STIHL’s lithium-ion instructions say its battery will charge only above 5°C and note that the charger monitors temperature. That 5°C threshold is not a universal rule for every battery platform. If a pack has just completed demanding drilling, allow it to cool naturally before charging; never cool it with water, ice, or compressed air that can drive moisture inside.

4. Seat the pack fully and observe the indicator
Slide the battery into the matched charger until it locks. Confirm the indicator pattern in the charger manual. A flashing light may indicate normal charging, a completed charge, unsuitable temperature, or a fault depending on the model. If the indicator reports an error, remove the pack, wait for it to reach the specified temperature, and consult the manual rather than repeatedly reinserting it.
5. Recharge without deliberate deep discharge
For the lithium-ion batteries covered by the cited manufacturer guidance, you do not need to run the drill until it stops before every recharge. Bosch says its lithium-ion battery can be charged at any time and that interrupting charging does not reduce service life. STIHL explains that lithium-ion batteries do not have the memory effect associated with older nickel-cadmium batteries. In practical terms, a partial discharge followed by a normal recharge is acceptable.
When the drill’s low-voltage protection shuts it down, release the trigger. Bosch warns that continuing to press the switch after automatic shutdown can damage the battery. Do not repeatedly “bump” the trigger to extract a few more seconds of operation.

When charging is complete, follow the manual’s direction about leaving the pack on the charger. If the instructions call for removal, take it off by the housing rather than pulling the cable. Keep the charger disconnected when it is not needed if the manual recommends that practice, and coil the cable loosely to avoid strain.

Storage: why one charge percentage cannot cover every brand
Manufacturers give different storage targets, so averaging them can produce the wrong advice for your pack. The following figures are manufacturer recommendations for their own products, not independent limits or guarantees for all lithium-ion batteries.

Because these recommendations conflict in a meaningful way, identify your exact model before choosing a storage percentage. If the manual is unavailable, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel instead of assuming that 40%, 50%, 80%, or 100% is universally correct.
Preparing a pack for several weeks or months
- Clean dust from the housing with a dry cloth. Keep liquid away from vents and terminals.
- Remove the battery from the drill. A tool left in a trigger bag or case can be activated accidentally and can slowly drain the pack.
- Apply the charge level specified by the battery manual. Follow the manufacturer’s special instruction if storage will exceed six months.
- Place the pack in a dry, shaded location with stable temperature and ventilation. Do not seal it in a damp toolbox or leave it on a windowsill.
- Keep it separate from loose metal objects such as screws, nails, and coins that could bridge the contacts.
Milwaukee identifies 49°C as the point above which long storage can cause permanent capacity loss in its packs. STIHL USA gives 10°C to 20°C as a preferred storage range in its guidance. These numbers describe those manufacturers’ recommendations, not a universal safe-storage specification.

After long storage
Inspect the pack before installing it. If it is swollen, cracked, wet, unusually hot, or has a chemical odor, do not charge it. If it looks normal, use the matched charger and allow a normal charging cycle. Milwaukee’s guidance says its packs can be charged normally after about a year of storage; do not convert that interval into a rule for another platform.

Why a cordless drill battery shuts off
Electronic protection can interrupt output when the pack detects excessive current, low voltage, or excessive temperature. A shutdown is a signal to change conditions, not an invitation to keep pulling the trigger.
Shutdown during high-torque drilling or a bind
Milwaukee explains that high current draw during high-torque work, binding, or stalling can switch the pack off. Release the trigger, remove the bit from the work safely, reduce pressure, select an appropriate gear or bit, and restart. If the bit is jammed, disconnect the battery before freeing it by hand and follow the drill manual’s procedure.
Temperature indicator or hot pack
If an indicator signals excessive temperature, release the trigger and let the pack cool in a dry, shaded place. Do not place it in a refrigerator, freezer, water, or on a cold metal surface that can create condensation. A pack that repeatedly overheats under ordinary work, remains hot after cooling, or shows physical damage should be taken out of service and assessed by an authorized technician.
Shutdown when the charge is low
Some systems disconnect the output to prevent deep discharge. Bosch describes automatic shutdown when its battery is discharged and warns against continuing to press the switch. Remove the pack, recharge it with the specified charger, and investigate unusual short runtime rather than defeating the protection.

Battery will not charge: a safe diagnostic sequence
- Verify compatibility. Match the charger model and battery platform exactly. Do not substitute a charger from another brand or voltage family.
- Check temperature. Bring the pack into the charging range stated in its manual. STIHL’s cited instructions require its battery to be above 5°C; another product may specify a different range.
- Inspect contacts. With the charger unplugged, check for dirt, corrosion, bent terminals, or foreign material. Clean only as the manual permits and never bridge contacts with a tool.
- Read the indicator code. A solid, flashing, or alternating light can mean different things on different chargers. Use the model-specific table.
- Try no repeated forced starts. Do not repeatedly insert a pack that reports a fault, and do not press the drill trigger while it is on the charger.
- Stop for damage or abnormal heat. Cracks, swelling, leaks, smoke, chemical odor, or rapid heating require removal from service and professional guidance.
If a known-good, compatible charger still rejects a normal-looking pack, the battery may have reached a protective fault or end-of-service condition. Do not open the housing or attempt cell replacement.
What to do with a damaged or failing battery
Do not use, charge, puncture, crush, solder, or dismantle a pack that is cracked, swollen, leaking, scorched, or behaving abnormally. DEWALT directs users not to attempt battery repair or service and to use a service center. Other manufacturers likewise provide authorized service routes. Keep the pack away from heat and combustible materials while you arrange instructions, and follow local rules for lithium-battery collection and disposal. Never place a lithium-ion drill battery in ordinary household trash unless local authorities explicitly direct that method.
Choosing a replacement battery or charger
When a pack is worn out or damaged, identify the exact drill model and battery platform before ordering anything. Compare these five items:
- Tool compatibility: the exact drill model and approved battery series.
- Voltage and connector: nominal voltage, physical rails, terminals, and locking mechanism.
- Charger match: the approved charger model and its charging-temperature requirements.
- Storage instructions: the charge state, temperature, and extended-storage procedure for that pack.
- Support: the manufacturer’s authorized service, warranty, and disposal channels in your region.
Do not assume that a higher-capacity pack is automatically suitable. Capacity can affect size, balance, charging time, and the tool’s approved combinations. If the label is unreadable, photograph the drill, battery, and charger and ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to identify the platform before purchase.
A practical inspection checklist for job sites
- Before work: check housing, terminals, and charger condition; confirm the pack is dry and seated correctly.
- During work: avoid binding and excessive pressure; if the tool stops, release the trigger before changing technique.
- After work: remove the battery from the drill, wipe off dust, and let a hot pack cool naturally.
- Before storage: apply the exact manual’s charge target, isolate the pack from metal objects, and place it in a dry, shaded location.
- Before the next charge: inspect again for cracks, swelling, leaks, odor, or unusual temperature.
The safest battery-care rule is therefore specific rather than universal: match the charger and platform, charge lithium-ion packs without deliberate deep discharge, store them under the manufacturer’s stated conditions, and treat every protection shutdown or physical defect as a reason to stop and investigate.
