Contour’s Sovereign is a design-led range of low-surface-temperature (LST) convectors using lamella heat exchangers. It is available as a floor-mounted, wall-mounted, free-standing or bench configuration, so the practical choice depends on the room layout, available fixing space and whether seating is part of the brief. Contour positions the range for public-facing spaces, but its published material does not provide independent heat-output, efficiency or safety-test results for the individual models.
For a building owner, architect, facilities manager, M&E engineer or contractor, Sovereign is therefore best treated as a configurable product family rather than a one-size-fits-all radiator. Use the four configurations to establish a layout direction, then obtain current technical data from Contour before fixing a specification.

What the Sovereign range is
Sovereign is a Contour range of convectors built around lamella heat exchangers. The manufacturer says the range was developed with flexibility of style in mind and describes it as particularly suitable for spaces occupied by members of the public. That positioning makes it relevant to schools, healthcare settings, offices, visitor facilities, reception areas and other projects where a heater is visible to users rather than hidden in a plant room. Those details must come from the current technical documentation for the selected size and system conditions.

The heat exchanger is the functional core; the outer form is where the four Sovereign configurations differ. Contour presents the range as a way to coordinate heating with architecture instead of treating the radiator as an unavoidable visual obstruction.
Why Contour calls it a design-conscious LST radiator
Contour lists several visual and handling details for Sovereign:
- a honeycomb grille;
- safe corners and edges;
- one-piece construction;
- a streamlined appearance;
- colour customisation; and
- optional slot or hole grille designs.
These are manufacturer-described features, not independent test findings. The available sources do not publish durability testing, impact testing, surface-temperature measurements or user-safety assessments specific to Sovereign. A project that depends on a particular safety classification, vandal-resistance level or cleanability standard should request the relevant evidence directly rather than infer it from the appearance of the grille or the phrase “safe corners.”

This is a stated product benefit, not an independently verified comparison. No source reviewed for this article reports a controlled efficiency trial, warm-up-time test, seasonal energy result or comparison against another convector.
The four Sovereign configurations compared
The four options solve different placement problems. The table is a design brief, not a substitute for a heat-loss calculation or a manufacturer’s dimensional schedule.

Buildingtalk’s 25 April 2022 feature describes the floor-mounted model as the conventional choice, the wall-mounted version as useful where floor area is limited, the free-standing model for heavily glazed spaces such as corridors or conservatories, and the bench model for boot rooms or utilities. Floor-mounted Sovereign
Choose the floor-mounted form when a traditional low-level heating zone fits the plan. It can be the simplest option to coordinate in a new-build wall build-up or a refurbishment where existing floor-level services already point to that location. Check the finished-floor build-up, skirting profile, door swings and furniture zones before reserving the footprint. A drawing should show the unit, valves or connections, cleaning gap and any required access panel rather than just a nominal centreline.
Wall-mounted Sovereign
Wall mounting preserves floor area, which can matter in narrow circulation routes, compact rooms or spaces that need flexible furniture layouts. The wall’s construction is decisive: a masonry wall, stud partition and lightweight lining will have different fixing methods and load paths. Coordinate brackets with insulation, service voids, dado rails, wall protection and any acoustic treatment. Keep the manufacturer’s connection and service clearances on the coordinated elevation; do not assume that a visually slim grille means the installation can be placed tight to every adjacent finish.
Free-standing Sovereign
A free-standing unit can suit a glazed perimeter where there is little uninterrupted wall. It may also allow the heating line to follow a spatial boundary without building a bespoke recess. The trade-off is that the heater occupies circulation or usable floor area and must remain stable when people pass, clean around it or move furniture. Confirm whether the selected model requires anchoring, how pipework is protected, and how the unit is isolated for maintenance. In public areas, include the free-standing footprint in the accessibility and escape-route review.
Bench Sovereign
The bench configuration combines heating with a seat, making it relevant to changing areas, boot rooms, utilities, waiting zones or other places where people naturally pause. Treat the seat as part of the building’s furniture and safeguarding strategy, not merely as a decorative top. Establish the intended user load, seat dimensions, edge detail, cleaning regime and relationship to adjacent doors and lockers. The source material’s question about “combining your radiator with a seat” describes this functional idea; it is not a technical load rating. Obtain the manufacturer’s current structural and fixing information before allowing regular public use.

How to select a configuration for a real project
Start with the room rather than the product photograph. Work through these decisions in order:

Mark glazing, doors, escape routes, furniture, skirtings, columns and equipment. Identify where a heater can sit without reducing required circulation or access.
- Decide whether the floor must stay clear. If the answer is yes, test a wall-mounted arrangement first. If the walls cannot accept the load or the perimeter is largely glazed, investigate a free-standing arrangement.
- Test whether seating is genuinely needed. Select the bench form only when a seat improves the room’s operation and can be maintained safely. Do not add a bench simply to fill an awkward elevation.
- Check the heat-loss model. The sources do not publish Sovereign outputs by model. Size the room using the project’s design conditions, then ask Contour to confirm which length, height and configuration can meet the calculated duty.
- Coordinate the interfaces. Resolve pipe routes, valves, brackets, floor build-ups, wall finishes, access for cleaning and replacement, and any guarding or protection required by the building operator.
- Freeze the visible specification. Record the colour, grille pattern, configuration, dimensions and connection arrangement on the schedule so substitutions cannot change the appearance or installation assumptions.
What must be confirmed before specifying Sovereign
The reviewed sources identify the product family and its four forms but do not state current prices, dimensions, heat outputs, operating temperatures, warranty terms, lead times or system-compatibility limits. They also do not identify which dealers currently stock each variant. A technically complete specification should obtain the following from current Contour documentation or its technical team:
- model code and configuration;
- overall length, height, depth and weight;
- heat output at the project’s flow, return and room temperatures;
- allowable operating pressure and temperature;
- connection sizes, positions and valve requirements;
- compatibility with the project’s heat source and control strategy;
- wall, floor or bench fixing details and substrate requirements;
- required clearances for air movement, cleaning and maintenance;
- available colours and the finish-selection process;
- honeycomb, slot or hole grille options;
- current availability and lead time; and
- installation, cleaning and replacement instructions.

Installation and coordination workflow
1. Establish the design duty
Use the project heat-loss calculation and design water temperatures to define the required output. Do not select a length from a room area rule of thumb when the manufacturer has not published a model-by-model output table in the available evidence.
2. Select the physical arrangement
Compare the four configurations against the coordinated plan and elevations. For every option, show the occupied footprint, service zone and access for removal. A bench or free-standing unit needs the same level of plan coordination as built-in furniture.

3. Obtain current technical data
Send Contour the room duty, water temperatures, system type, proposed dimensions, mounting substrate, finish and grille preference. Ask for confirmation in writing so the final schedule reflects a current product rather than an outdated web description.
4. Coordinate structure and services
Verify fixing points with the structural or architectural team, route flow and return pipework, and coordinate valves and controls with the controls engineer. For wall-mounted units, resolve partitions and linings before closing the wall. For free-standing and bench units, resolve anchoring and protection before finishes are installed.
5. Approve the appearance
Request a finish and grille sample or an approved colour reference where the radiator is prominent. Record the selected option against the model code; “custom colour” is not sufficiently precise for a construction schedule.
6. Inspect and commission
Before handover, check that the installed configuration, dimensions, grille and colour match the approved schedule; confirm that air paths and cleaning access are not blocked; pressure-test and balance the system in accordance with the project requirements; and provide the operator with the manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance information.
What the available evidence does—and does not—prove
Contour’s statements support a clear design proposition: a lamella convector range with four placement formats, visual customisation and a form intended for public-facing interiors. They do not establish a quantified performance advantage. No independent Sovereign-specific statistic was identified for efficiency, warm-up time, heat output, surface temperature, noise, durability or lifecycle cost.

Contour’s broader materials include a cleaning-cost business-case example for its DeepClean range. That example is not a Sovereign result and should not be transferred to this product. Likewise, a claim that low water content enables rapid heating should remain attributed to Contour unless a project-specific test or independent report is supplied.
Designing for public spaces
The manufacturer’s official product page says: “The Sovereign range is particularly suitable in spaces occupied by members of the public.” That is a suitability claim, not a blanket approval for every public building. The responsible specification still considers the room’s users, likely impact, cleaning methods, tamper exposure, accessibility route, emergency egress and maintenance access.
Safe corners, a one-piece enclosure and a choice of grille styles may help the visual and practical coordination of a public interior, but the project team should request evidence for any mandatory performance requirement. Where a client needs a defined surface-temperature limit, fire classification, impact resistance, hygiene protocol or accessibility clearance, write that requirement separately and obtain the supporting documentation.
Is Sovereign the right LST radiator for the project?
Sovereign is a credible starting point when the brief calls for an LST convector that can be integrated visibly into the architecture and adapted to four different placement conditions. The floor, wall, free-standing and bench forms give a useful layout choice, while colour and grille options can reduce the visual compromise of exposed heating.
The decision should remain evidence-led. Select the configuration from the plan, calculate the required duty, and confirm the exact model, dimensions, compatibility, finish, grille, fixing method, availability and lead time with Contour before procurement. Without that project-level confirmation, the range name alone is not enough to guarantee performance or fit.
