Overview

Open Planner Studio is an open-source planning tool for construction work across buildings, infrastructure and civil works. It brings schedule planning and project data into an application built around IFC, the open buildingSMART standard: schedules are stored as IFC files rather than in a proprietary closed format.

The software is marked Available Beta in the OpenAEC ecosystem. Its maker invites work planners, schedulers, project leads and BIM coordinators to try it and share feedback. That beta status is worth weighing if you are choosing a tool for a live project: the stated availability is not the same as a claim of mature or production-ready software.

OpenAEC describes three parts of its organization: a Foundation that maintains tools, OpenAEC Studio for implementation, hosting, custom development and professional support, and a community of contributors. The application also includes an offline manual in fourteen languages, with quick-start material, practical guides, reference pages and sample projects.

Key features

Schedule planning and resource control

Gantt charts provide a visual view of task timing, while automatic critical path calculation identifies the sequence of work that determines the schedule's duration. Resource histograms show resource demands, and automatic levelling addresses overallocation. Tasks can be measured in days or hours.

Construction calendars can account for holidays, recesses, frost delays, inspection moments and project phasing. These options let a planner represent constraints that affect when work can proceed, rather than relying only on a basic working-week calendar.

Interoperability and AI access

Alongside its native IFC 4.3 schedules, Open Planner Studio can import and export IFC, CSV, MS Project XML and Primavera P6 XML. It can also open MS Project MPP files natively. This range gives teams several ways to exchange schedule information, though the listed formats do not by themselves establish that every project detail will transfer identically between applications.

A built-in MCP server allows compatible AI clients, including Claude Code, to read and edit schedules. The available controls include pausing access, switching to read-only mode, automatic backups and an activity panel. These safeguards give users ways to constrain and review AI-client interaction with project schedules.

Reports and file recovery

Reports can be exported as PDF at approximately 220 DPI, with paper sizes up to A2. Baseline overlays and status or progress lines are available for communicating planned and current schedule information.

The application offers crash recovery and optional periodic saving back to a writable project file. Unsaved documents are not automatically overwritten, which helps preserve a distinction between recovery and routine saving.

Pricing

The listed plan, Open Planner Studio, costs 0.00 USD per free. It is free and open source under LGPL-3.0, with no subscription and no per-seat licence fees. A free plan is available; there is no free trial.

Platforms

Open Planner Studio is listed for Linux, macOS, web and Windows. No mobile apps are listed, so teams needing a dedicated phone or tablet app should account for that limitation.

Who it's for

The product is aimed at work planners, schedulers, project leads and BIM coordinators, particularly those who need construction scheduling alongside IFC-based project information. Its calendars, resource levelling, reporting and exchange formats also make it relevant to contractors coordinating work across building, infrastructure or civil projects.

Homeowners managing a renovation may find a schedule useful for understanding sequencing and progress, but the stated intended users are project professionals, and the software is currently marked beta. It is best approached as a planning tool to assess with the project team rather than assumed to be a homeowner-focused job-management system.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with no subscription or per-seat licence fees.
Pros: IFC-based schedule storage and support for several exchange formats, including native opening of MPP files.
Pros: Construction calendars, critical path calculation, resource histograms and automatic levelling address core scheduling needs.
Pros: PDF reporting, an offline manual in fourteen languages, crash recovery and optional periodic saving are included.
Cons: The product is marked beta, and its maker is seeking feedback from users.
Cons: No mobile apps are listed.
Cons: AI-client schedule editing may not suit every workflow, even with pause, read-only, backup and activity controls.

Alternatives

Teams comparing tools can browse Construction scheduling software. Other options include FinitePath, Oracle Primavera Cloud, InEight, Nialli Visual Planner, Outbuild, TeamGantt, ALICE and Asta Powerproject.

Verdict

Open Planner Studio combines construction scheduling fundamentals with IFC-based file handling, broad schedule exchange options and controls for compatible AI clients. Its zero-cost, open-source plan is straightforward, and the construction-specific calendars and resource tools make its scope clear. The main caveat is beta availability: teams should consider that status, the lack of mobile apps and their own requirements for schedule maturity before making it part of project operations.
