Yes—but only in the narrow sense used by the 2008 product announcement. Ciralight said its SunTrackerTwo roof daylighting unit would deliver more useful interior daylight, for longer parts of the day and at lower sun angles, than the earlier SunTrackerOne. The announcement claimed average electric-light shutoff periods of more than 10 hours and an average 20 percent increase in light levels.

Those figures were manufacturer claims in a short launch notice, not the results of an independently documented test. They do not prove that every daylighting unit produces more light than a skylight, light pipe or electric-lighting system, and they do not establish that SunTrackerTwo is still sold today.

What the title refers to

“Daylighting Unit Produces More Light” is the wording of a Roofing Contractor product announcement dated August 13, 2008. The product was Ciralight’s SunTrackerTwo, presented as the successor to SunTrackerOne. The comparison in that announcement was between those two Ciralight models—not between SunTrackerTwo and every other type of roof daylighting.

The stated design goal was to collect sunlight when a conventional fixed opening would receive less of it, particularly when the sun was low on the horizon. A tracking collector follows the sun and sends the captured light into the building, so the interior can receive useful daylight during more hours of the day and in seasons with unfavorable sun angles.

Mike Basch, identified in the announcement as Ciralight’s CEO, described the launch in promotional language: “SunTrackerTwo is the next generation of high-performance daylighting.” That sentence is a vendor statement, not an independent engineering assessment.

What Ciralight claimed in 2008

The announcement made two headline performance claims and one geographic claim. Each needs to be read with its original qualification because the notice did not publish a test protocol, baseline, site data or independent verification.

Claim in the 2008 announcement What it means What is not established
More than 10 hours Ciralight said the average time electric lights could be turned off during the day would exceed 10 hours. The announcement does not state the building type, latitude, weather, season, control settings, daylight target or measurement method.
Average 20 percent increase Ciralight said light levels would increase by an average of 20 percent. No comparison protocol, sensor locations, baseline model, statistical range or independent test is provided.
Operation as far north as Canada and Sweden The announcement said the unit could capture enough sunlight to illuminate building interiors in those regions. No city, climate file, roof orientation, interior target or site measurements are identified.

“Average” is especially important here. Without the population of buildings or operating conditions used to calculate an average, the figure cannot be applied as a guaranteed result to a particular warehouse, office, school or plant. A specification should therefore treat these numbers as historical marketing claims rather than design values.

How a tracked roof daylighting system works

Sun tracking

Current Ciralight material describes daylighting systems that use GPS-controlled tracking and mirror arrays. A controller determines the sun’s position and moves the optical assembly so mirrors continue directing sunlight toward the building’s light-delivery path. Tracking is intended to maintain useful collection when the sun moves across the sky, rather than relying on one fixed orientation.

Mirror-based light delivery

The mirror array redirects outdoor sunlight into the roof unit and onward into the interior. The useful output is therefore dependent on more than the collector itself: cloud cover, haze, dirt, obstruction, roof placement, interior geometry and the reflectance of the light-delivery path all affect the illuminance that reaches a work area.

Controls and electrical lighting

A daylighting installation can be paired with electric-light controls. When sensors detect that the target illuminance is available, the control system can dim or switch off electric fixtures. The 2008 claim of more than 10 hours concerns this potential operating outcome; it is not a promise that a fixture will remain off for that duration in every building.

What current product information does—and does not—show

Ciralight’s current website describes an active daylighting product family using GPS-controlled tracking and mirror arrays. A SunTracker 400 technical information sheet lists a solar-powered GPS tracking controller, unit dimensions, a roof opening and the unit’s weight. Those details show that the company continues to describe tracked roof daylighting as a product category.

They do not confirm that the 2008 SunTrackerTwo model remains available, that its configuration is unchanged, or that its launch-era performance claims apply to present installations. The current material also does not, by itself, provide a verified energy-savings result for a particular building. Before writing a specification or requesting a price, confirm the current model name, available territories, roof details, service arrangements and documentation directly with the manufacturer.

Does it produce more light than other daylighting options?

The available announcement cannot answer that broader question. It supports only the historical comparison of SunTrackerTwo with SunTrackerOne. It does not publish enough data to rank either unit against passive skylights, roof monitors, tubular light pipes or electric lighting.

For a current project, compare systems on the same defined basis:

  • Illuminance at the work plane: specify the target lux level and the exact measurement height and locations.
  • Useful daylight hours: state the latitude, orientation, operating season, weather assumptions and percentage of occupied hours that must meet the target.
  • Roof and structural requirements: check the roof opening, curb or flashing detail, loading, access and water-management requirements.
  • Controls: identify sensor type, dimming range, override behavior and how electric lights respond when daylight changes.
  • Energy performance: require a calculation or monitored result for the actual building rather than transferring a historical average from another site.
  • Maintenance: establish cleaning, inspection, tracking-component service and replacement access before installation.

A system can deliver a high peak illuminance yet provide little practical benefit if the light misses occupied zones, controls are poorly commissioned or maintenance reduces optical output. Conversely, a lower-output system may be a better fit if it covers the required area with simpler roof work and predictable service.

How to evaluate a SunTracker-style proposal

1. Define the indoor lighting target

List the rooms, occupied hours, tasks and required illuminance before reviewing equipment. A warehouse aisle, manufacturing bench and office desk have different visual needs. Mark the work plane and the zones where daylight must be useful; measuring only directly below a roof opening can exaggerate the benefit.

2. Request a site-specific daylight model

Ask the supplier or designer to state the building latitude, roof height, roof orientation, surrounding obstructions, glazing or interior delivery path, floor reflectance and assumed sky conditions. The output should show predicted illuminance by zone and by representative times, not just a single peak value.

3. Separate daylight from control savings

Daylight delivered to a room is not the same as electricity saved. Request the assumed fixture wattage, control sequence, occupancy schedule, dimming limits and baseline operating hours. A claim that lights can be off for a certain period must be tied to those assumptions.

4. Verify roof compatibility

Use the current technical sheet for dimensions, roof-opening requirements and weight, then have the project’s structural and roofing professionals verify the actual roof assembly. Confirm curb details, waterproofing, wind and snow considerations, penetrations, access paths and whether the existing roof warranty permits the work.

5. Establish commissioning and measurement

Put acceptance criteria in writing. They might include sensor calibration, tracking operation, illuminance readings at named work-plane points and the intended electric-light control response. Record outdoor conditions and the date and time of readings so later maintenance checks can be compared with the commissioning baseline.

6. Confirm service before committing

Ask who supplies replacement controls, motors or optical components, how faults are diagnosed, what inspection interval is recommended and how a technician reaches a roof-mounted unit. A daylighting concept that cannot be serviced safely can create more operational risk than its lighting benefit is worth.

How to interpret the “low sun” advantage

Fixed skylights and other stationary collectors are most effective when the sun’s path and the opening’s orientation align with the design assumptions. Early morning, late afternoon, winter conditions and high-latitude sites present lower solar angles. A tracking mechanism can keep the optical axis aimed toward the sun during those periods, which is the engineering reason a tracked unit may extend useful daylight beyond a fixed collector.

Tracking does not eliminate weather or seasonal limits. Thick cloud, heavy precipitation, smoke and obstructions can reduce available sunlight regardless of the mechanism. At a high latitude, the sun may remain low for long periods and winter days are short; a claim that a system can illuminate interiors “as far north as Canada and Sweden” therefore needs a site-specific interpretation rather than a blanket performance guarantee.

Common specification and purchasing mistakes

  • Repeating the launch figures as guarantees: the more-than-10-hours and 20-percent statements lack the test conditions needed for a contractual target.
  • Assuming the 2008 model is current: product names, dimensions, controls and service arrangements can change; verify the model being quoted.
  • Comparing peak lux only: useful daylight is a time-and-area question, so demand readings or simulations across occupied zones.
  • Ignoring electric-light controls: without properly commissioned sensors and dimming, captured daylight may not reduce electricity use.
  • Overlooking roof work: penetrations, flashing, structural review and safe maintenance access belong in the project scope and budget.
  • Using an unverified regional claim: “Canada and Sweden” covers many climates and latitudes; identify the actual project location.

What a defensible present-day comparison should contain

For each candidate system, prepare one side-by-side schedule with the same assumptions. Include the current product identifier, collector and roof-opening dimensions, installed weight, control power source, design illuminance by zone, modeled useful-daylight hours, electric-light baseline, maintenance tasks, warranty or service terms and the method used to verify results.

Label every number as a measured result, a modeled prediction or a manufacturer claim. Keep the weather file, latitude, date range and occupancy schedule with the calculation. This prevents a historical promotional average from being mistaken for a site guarantee and gives the owner a way to check performance after installation.

Bottom line for building owners

SunTrackerTwo was announced in 2008 as a higher-performing successor to SunTrackerOne, with claimed gains during low-sun periods. The announcement is useful historical context, but it is not an independent test and it does not establish current availability or present-day performance. Treat any modern proposal as a new design decision: verify the current equipment, model the actual building, specify measurable illuminance and controls, and require commissioning evidence before relying on daylight to replace electric lighting.
