1:2:4 concrete

Cement, sand and aggregate mix ratios for common home projects

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right mix depends on what the concrete must carry, how it will be exposed, the section thickness and whether the work is concrete or screed. As a practical starting point, a nominal 1:2:4 cement:sand:coarse aggregate ratio by volume suits many ordinary paths, shed bases and ground slabs, provided the specified strength and local requirements allow it. Low-load fill may use 1:3:5 or 1:3:6, while heavier-duty paving generally needs about 1:1.5:3 or a designed mix. Floor screed contains no coarse aggregate and commonly uses 1:3 to 1:4.5 cement:sand with as little water as workable.

These ratios are field guides, not universal building-code prescriptions. Foundations, reinforced slabs, retaining walls, driveways carrying vehicles and other safety-critical work should follow the project drawings, required strength class and competent professional advice.

What a concrete mix ratio means

A nominal ratio lists the ingredients in the order cement : sand : coarse aggregate. Thus, 1:2:4 means one measured volume of cement, two equal volumes of sand and four equal volumes of gravel or other coarse aggregate. It is a proportion, not a promise that one particular bucket sequence will produce a specified strength.

Nominal ratios are normally measured by volume on small domestic jobs because buckets, boxes or batching gauges are convenient. Weight batching is more accurate: sand and gravel contain different amounts of void space and moisture, so equal volumes do not always contain equal masses or behave identically. For structural work, use the specified grade or an engineered mix design rather than converting a drawing into an informal bucket ratio.

Concrete is mostly aggregate. Current American Cement Association guidance puts aggregate at roughly 60%–75% of concrete volume, cement at about 7%–15% and water at about 14%–21%. Those ranges explain why changing aggregate grading, moisture or water can alter workability and performance even when the nominal ratio appears unchanged.

Quick ratio guide for home projects

Project context Starting nominal ratio by volume How to use the guidance
Low-strength fill or lightly loaded mass concrete 1:3:5 or 1:3:6 Use only where no structural strength is required.
General paths, shed bases and ordinary ground slabs 1:2:4 Confirm the required strength class, thickness and local practice before placing.
Heavier-duty paving or load-bearing work About 1:1.5:3 or a designed mix Follow the engineer or building-control specification; do not select this solely from a table.
Cement-sand floor screed 1:3 to 1:4.5 cement:sand No coarse aggregate; keep water low, compact properly and cure under cover.

FAO examples describe 1:2:4 and 1:2:3 as ordinary mixes, 1:4:6 and 1:3:5 as lean mixes, and 1:2:2 or 1:1.5:2.5 as rich mixes. For C15–C20-type applications, its examples include 1:3:5, 1:3:4 and 1:2:4 for foundation walls, basement walls, structural concrete, reinforced floor slabs, roads, driveways, paving, walks and stairways. The same guidance gives richer examples such as 1:2:4, 1:2:3 and 1:1.5:3 for severe wear, heavy machinery, retaining walls, dams and similarly demanding conditions. Treat those examples as context, not as a substitute for a project specification.

Choosing a ratio by project

Paths, paving and a shed base

For an ordinary pedestrian path, small patio or shed base on competent, well-prepared ground, 1:2:4 is a common starting point. It gives more cement than a lean fill mix while retaining enough coarse aggregate to limit shrinkage and cost. The ratio alone cannot correct poor subgrade preparation, inadequate thickness, standing water or missing joints. Confirm the required slab thickness and reinforcement, if any, separately.

A shed base that will carry only the shed and household storage is a different demand from a slab supporting machinery or a vehicle. If the use may change, design for the higher load now rather than relying on a nominal domestic ratio.

Driveways and vehicle areas

Vehicle traffic, turning forces, freeze–thaw exposure and de-icing salts can make a driveway substantially more demanding than a footpath. FAO lists 1:3:5, 1:3:4 and 1:2:4 among examples for roads and driveways, while richer mixes are associated with severe wear. That range is deliberately broad: the correct selection depends on the specified strength, slab thickness, base, drainage, reinforcement, joint layout and local exposure.

Do not assume that changing from 1:2:4 to a richer ratio alone makes a driveway compliant. A designed mix may be required, and the concrete supplier or engineer should state the strength class and durability requirements.

Foundations, retaining walls and reinforced slabs

Foundations, basement walls, retaining walls and reinforced structural slabs are safety-critical. FAO examples can indicate the order of magnitude of ordinary and rich mixes, but building regulations, structural drawings, cement strength class, aggregate grading, admixtures and exposure conditions may require different proportions. Use the specified concrete grade and placement method. If no specification exists, obtain one before mixing.

Low-load fill and mass concrete

Lean 1:3:5 or 1:3:6 mixes can be suitable for low-strength fill or lightly loaded mass concrete. They are not suitable where the concrete must resist structural loads, hold reinforcement in a designed member or provide a durable wearing surface. Label separate batches clearly so a lean fill mix is not accidentally placed in a footing or slab.

Floor screed

Screed is not the same material as coarse-aggregate concrete. Domestic levelling screed commonly uses 1:3 to 1:4.5 cement:sand, according to The Concrete Society. The ratio is cement to sand only; adding gravel changes the material and its finishing behaviour.

Keep screed water to the minimum that permits thorough mixing, placing and compaction. Excess water increases drying shrinkage and can leave a weak, dusty surface. The Concrete Society advises covering the screed for at least four days, preferably seven, to support controlled curing and drying. Protect it from rapid drying, frost, traffic and contamination during that period, and follow the flooring manufacturer’s moisture requirements before covering it permanently.

How much water should you add?

There is no single bucket of water that is correct for every 1:2:4 batch. The American Cement Association defines the water-cement ratio as the weight of mixing water divided by the weight of cement. Lower water demand is preferred when it still allows proper placement, compaction and finishing. Adding water to make a stiff batch flow more easily can increase porosity and reduce strength.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Water demand changes with cement content, sand grading, aggregate size, temperature, admixtures and the moisture already in the aggregates. Damp sand contributes water; very dry aggregate can absorb part of the batch water. Measure or estimate aggregate moisture consistently and adjust the added water rather than blindly repeating the same volume for every batch.

For a small job, add most of the planned water during mixing, then add the remainder gradually while the mixer runs. Stop when the mix is cohesive and workable enough to place and compact without segregation or a pool of water on the surface. Do not correct a wet batch by throwing in extra cement and sand at random; that changes the ratio and may leave an unverified mix. If the work is structural, use the water-cement ratio and admixture instructions supplied with the designed mix.

Selecting sand and coarse aggregate

Use clean, sound aggregates free of clay, organic matter, salts and other materials that could harm concrete quality. Aggregate size should suit the section thickness, reinforcement spacing and finishing method. Large stones may be economical in a thick mass pour but can obstruct reinforcement or prevent full compaction in a thin slab. A well-graded blend of sizes generally packs more efficiently than a single-size stone, but the exact grading should follow the specification.

Sand that is visibly wet changes the effective water content. Store aggregates so rainwater and soil do not contaminate them, and keep the moisture condition as consistent as possible from batch to batch. If the appearance of the sand changes during the day, expect the same nominal volume to deliver a different amount of water and solids.

Volume batching versus weight batching

Volume batching for minor work

Volume batching can work for non-structural domestic work when every measure has the same capacity and is filled consistently. Use a rigid gauge box or marked bucket rather than a random shovel load. Level each measure instead of heaping it, and keep the sequence constant. One measure of cement, two of sand and four of coarse aggregate is only meaningful when all six measures use the same unit.

Weight batching for accuracy

Weight batching is more repeatable because it accounts for differences in bulk density and moisture. It is the preferred basis for designed concrete and for any work where the specified strength matters. Weigh each ingredient to the mix design, account for aggregate moisture, and use the specified water and admixture doses. A nominal volume ratio should not be presented as equivalent to a laboratory or supplier-designed weight mix.

A practical mixing and placing sequence

  1. Confirm the specification. Check the required strength class, exposure, slab or screed thickness, reinforcement, joints and curing instructions. Stop if the work is structural and no specification is available.
  2. Prepare the base and equipment. Compact and level the subgrade, set forms, install reinforcement or edge details as specified, and ensure the mixer, gauge, wheelbarrow and finishing tools are clean.
  3. Measure consistently. Use one calibrated volume container for a nominal mix or scales for a designed mix. Keep cement dry and protected, and note whether the sand is damp.
  4. Blend the dry ingredients. Mix cement and sand until the colour is reasonably uniform, then add the coarse aggregate and distribute it before introducing water.
  5. Add water progressively. Introduce the planned water while mixing, reserving enough to adjust gradually. Aim for cohesive workability, not a soupy appearance.
  6. Mix thoroughly. Follow the mixer manufacturer’s loading and mixing time guidance. Scrape unmixed material from the drum only when the mixer is stopped safely.
  7. Place promptly. Deposit close to its final position, avoid dropping concrete from excessive height, and compact so there are no voids around reinforcement or edges.
  8. Finish without sprinkling water. Strike off and finish to the specified level and texture. Do not add surface water to make trowelling easier.
  9. Protect and cure. Prevent rapid moisture loss, rain damage, frost and early traffic. For screed, keep it covered for at least four days and preferably seven, following the flooring system’s drying limits.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using 1:2:4 for everything: The ratio is a starting point for ordinary work, not universal compliance. Use the specified grade for structural, heavily loaded or exposed work.
  • Adding water until the mix flows: Excess water raises the water-cement ratio. Add water slowly and improve workability through correct grading, mixing and approved admixtures.
  • Ignoring wet sand: Moisture in sand becomes part of the mixing water. Reduce added water when necessary and keep batches consistent.
  • Changing the measuring container: A shovel, bucket and gauge box do not represent the same volume. Use one consistent measure throughout a nominal batch.
  • Choosing aggregate that is too large: Stone must pass through the available space around reinforcement and fit the section thickness. Select size for the actual member, not merely for price.
  • Overworking or wetting the surface: Finishing water can create a weak surface layer. Finish the concrete or screed at its proper consistency.
  • Skipping curing: A correct ratio can still produce poor results if moisture is lost too quickly. Cover and protect the work according to the specification.
  • Mixing structural work without a design: Foundations, reinforced slabs, retaining walls, basement walls and vehicle areas deserve a documented strength and durability requirement.

Decision checklist before you batch

  • What load will the finished work carry: pedestrians, a shed, vehicles, machinery or a structural member?
  • Is the work concrete with coarse aggregate, or cement-sand screed without it?
  • What strength class, exposure category and thickness does the project specification require?
  • Are the sand and aggregate clean, suitably graded and in a known moisture condition?
  • Will you batch by consistent volume for minor non-structural work or by weight for designed concrete?
  • How will you control water, compaction, joints, finishing and curing?
  • Who will approve the mix if the work affects structural safety or building-control compliance?

The practical rule is simple: use 1:2:4 only where the project genuinely calls for an ordinary nominal mix, use leaner ratios only for non-structural fill, and move to a specified or designed mix as loads, exposure and consequences increase. Treat water control, aggregate condition and curing as part of the mix—not afterthoughts.
