Cedar Rapids LightLine Bridge Reaches Major Construction Milestone Ahead of Fall 2026 Target

The Alliant Energy LightLine pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Cedar Rapids has reached a major construction milestone, with river piers advancing, a tower pedestal completed and key bridge components being fabricated off site. ConnectCR’s latest update says the project remains on track for completion in fall 2026, although no confirmed public opening date has been announced.

What milestone did the LightLine bridge reach?

Construction has moved beyond early site preparation. The west-side trail detour is open, work on the remaining pier cofferdam is progressing, and several piers are complete or advancing. Crews have also finished the concrete pedestal that will support the bridge’s signature tower. Fabrication of the tower and other bridge components is taking place away from the Cedar River before those pieces are installed on site.

ConnectCR’s 2026 project update describes the Alliant Energy LightLine as “on track to be completed in Fall 2026.” That is a construction target rather than a guaranteed opening date; final completion certification and opening operations had not been announced as of October 17, 2026.

Where the bridge will go and why it matters

The bridge will cross the Cedar River between Cedar Rapids’ New Bohemia and Czech Village neighborhoods. It replaces the former CRANDIC railroad bridge, which was washed out in the 2008 flood. Unlike a road bridge, LightLine is intended for people walking, bicycling and using the regional trail system, providing a separated crossing without motor-vehicle traffic.

For trail users, the direct connection is expected to shorten some trips. Cedar Valley Nature Trail user Rob Kasper told KCRG that the route “gonna cut off about half a mile.” The crossing is also intended to make it easier for residents and visitors to reach destinations on either side of the river without detouring to a vehicle bridge.

Bridge design and trail connections

ConnectCR’s FAQ describes an 18-foot-wide deck designed for two-way bicycle and pedestrian movement. That width is intended to accommodate people riding or walking in both directions, families with strollers, seniors, people with disabilities and users who stop to look at the river or fish.

The completed bridge is planned as part of a broader recreation network, linking the Hoover Trail, Cedar River Trail and Cedar Valley Nature Trail. ConnectCR also identifies it as a future segment of the American Discovery Trail and Great American Rail-Trail.

How tall is the LightLine tower?

The current 2026 construction material from ConnectCR identifies the tower as 164 feet tall. Earlier project notes described a 168-foot tower. Because the newer update is the latest official figure, 164 feet is the appropriate number for current reporting; the two descriptions may reflect a design revision or differing measurement conventions, but the available project materials do not explain the discrepancy.

How much is the project costing?

KCRG reported a total project cost of $20 million in 2026. Its report said ConnectCR had raised more than $8 million through private donations and grants, with an Alliant Energy contribution and city funding covering the remaining needs. ConnectCR’s FAQ gives a more itemized set of figures, which should be read as the organization’s stated amounts rather than a separately audited project total.

Funding figure How it is described
$20 million Total project cost reported by KCRG in 2026
More than $8 million Private donations and grants reported by KCRG
$8.3 million Private donations listed in ConnectCR’s FAQ
$5 million Hall-Perrine Foundation matching grant listed by ConnectCR
$5.9 million City commitment listed by ConnectCR

The bridge site was sold to the city for $1, according to KCRG. Cedar Rapids is expected to own and maintain the completed bridge and Cedar Lake through its Parks and Recreation operations.

What happens before the bridge opens?

Remaining river work includes completing cofferdam and pier construction, followed by installation and integration of the tower and prefabricated bridge components. The west-side detour and active construction areas will continue to affect how trail users move around the site until work is finished.

The fall 2026 date should therefore be treated as the project’s current schedule goal, not proof that the bridge is already open. A city or ConnectCR announcement will be needed to confirm final completion, inspections, public access and any opening event.

Why the crossing is being built

Community development director Jennifer Pratt told KCRG that the bridge “becomes a destination people can enjoy on long trips or short trips.” Steve Akers, also quoted by KCRG, said it “opens up a lot of possibilities for people.” Those uses include everyday walking and cycling between neighborhoods as well as longer recreational rides connected to the regional trail network.
