Induction heats magnetic iron, and the enamel is only a glass-like coating over the iron body. The important qualification is that compatibility is model-specific: confirm the manufacturer’s guidance, test the base with a magnet, and make sure the pot is flat, smooth and correctly sized for your cooking zone.
Why enameled cast iron works with induction
An induction cooktop does not heat a pan with a gas flame or a radiant heating element. It creates a magnetic field that induces heat in compatible cookware. The cookware therefore needs a magnetic metal base, normally iron or magnetic stainless steel.

In an enameled cast-iron Dutch oven, the structural body is cast iron. Enamel is a glass-like coating applied to protect that iron and provide a non-reactive cooking surface; it does not normally block the magnetic field. Bosch describes enameled pots with an iron pan beneath the ceramic layer as suitable for induction and gives a magnet test as a quick confirmation.

This does not mean that every pot described as “enameled” is automatically suitable. Enameled cookware can be made from different metals, and a particular base may be too small, uneven or poorly sensed by a particular appliance. Treat the exact pot and exact cooktop as the combination you need to verify.

Check the specific Dutch oven before cooking
1. Look for the maker’s compatibility statement
Start with the product manual, packaging or product page. Look for wording such as “induction compatible,” “suitable for all cooktops,” or the induction symbol. A manufacturer’s statement is stronger evidence than the word “enameled” alone because it applies to that model’s base construction.
For example, Lodge states that its 6-quart Essential Enamel Dutch Oven is compatible with any stovetop, including induction. Lodge’s USA Enamel Cast Iron Dutch Oven page also lists induction compatibility. All-Clad’s 6-quart enameled cast-iron Dutch oven is described as suitable for all cooktops, including induction. Le Creuset’s UK FAQ says its cookware other than stoneware is suitable for induction and describes its cast-iron enamel as glass.
2. Perform the magnet test
Place a household magnet against the outside bottom of the Dutch oven, not against the enamelled interior. Bosch’s induction cookware guidance puts the test this way: “An easy test – if a magnet sticks to the bottom of your pan, it can be used on an induction cooktop.” A strong, clear attraction is a good indication that the base contains magnetic iron.

The magnet test is a screening check, not a complete guarantee. It does not tell you whether the base is flat enough, whether its diameter matches the zone, or whether your cooktop’s sensor will recognize the pot. If the magnet does not stick, do not use that pot on induction unless the manufacturer specifically identifies it as compatible and explains why the test may not apply.
3. Inspect the base
Turn the pot over and check that the contact surface is smooth, clean and reasonably flat. Chips or rough enamel on the underside can reduce contact with the glass and may scratch it. A visibly warped or heavily ridged base can also prevent reliable detection and even heating.
Match the pot to the induction zone
Induction cooktops sense cookware through the magnetic field in each cooking zone. The base should be similar in size to the zone, following the appliance manual. SITRAM advises that the cookware bottom diameter be equivalent to the cooking-zone diameter and notes that sensors vary between cooktop models. A pot that heats normally on one induction unit may be detected differently on another.

Do not assume that the advertised capacity is the relevant measurement. Capacity describes volume; the cooktop needs the diameter and shape of the magnetic contact area. Lodge lists a 6.87-inch flat-bottom width for its 6-quart Essential Enamel Dutch Oven. That is a measurement for that specific model, not a universal dimension for six-quart Dutch ovens.

| What to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic base | A magnet sticks firmly, or the maker confirms induction use | Induction requires a magnetic cookware body or base |
| Bottom diameter | Compare the actual flat contact width with the zone guidance | A very small or oversized contact area may not be sensed correctly |
| Flatness | The bottom sits evenly without rocking | Good contact supports detection and stable heating |
| Surface condition | Clean, smooth underside with no sharp projections | Protects the glass and avoids poor contact |
| Cooktop requirements | Read the appliance manual for minimum pan size and sensor rules | Detection thresholds differ by model |
How to test it safely on your cooktop
- Read both manuals. Confirm that the Dutch oven is listed as induction-compatible and note the cooktop’s minimum pan diameter, zone markings and cookware warnings.
- Clean the contact surfaces. Wipe the glass zone and the pot’s underside so grit cannot become trapped between them.
- Center the pot while it is empty. Set it down gently in the middle of a zone that matches its flat base. Do not drag it across the glass.
- Add a small amount of water. Testing with water gives the cooktop a heat load and avoids heating an empty heavy pot unnecessarily.
- Select a low or medium setting. Wait for the cookware indicator or heating response described in the appliance manual. Increase the setting gradually rather than starting at maximum power.
- Watch for normal operation. The water should begin heating and the cooktop should not repeatedly switch the zone off because it cannot sense the pan.
- Stop if anything is abnormal. Turn the zone off if the pot is not detected, the base rocks, the glass shifts or scratches, or the appliance displays a cookware error. Let the pan cool before moving it.
Verified examples—and what their specifications do and do not prove
Manufacturer statements can establish compatibility for a named model, but they do not turn one product’s dimensions into a rule for every Dutch oven. Use these examples as evidence of how makers describe compatible cookware, then verify your own model.
| Manufacturer or model | Published induction information | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lodge 6-quart Essential Enamel Dutch Oven | Listed as compatible with any stovetop, including induction; flat-bottom width listed as 6.87 inches | The width is specific to this model |
| Lodge USA Enamel Cast Iron Dutch Oven | Listed as compatible with stovetops including induction | Confirm the dimensions of the exact size you own |
| Le Creuset enameled cast iron | UK FAQ says cookware other than stoneware is suitable for induction; enamel is described as glass | The statement is from the UK FAQ; check local instructions for your appliance |
| All-Clad 6-quart enameled cast-iron Dutch oven | Listed as working on all cooktops, including induction | Use the stated model and size, not a blanket assumption about all enameled cookware |
| SITRAM cast-iron Dutch ovens | Described as suitable for all cooktops, including induction | SITRAM cautions that sensors vary and recommends matching bottom diameter to the zone |
Protect the glass cooktop when using heavy cast iron
Cast iron is heavy even when it is covered with enamel. Induction compatibility does not guarantee that a particular glass surface is immune to damage. Follow the cooktop maker’s handling instructions.

- Lower the Dutch oven vertically instead of dropping it onto the glass.
- Lift it to reposition it; do not slide it across the surface.
- Keep the underside free of salt crystals, sand-like debris and hardened food that could scratch the glass.
- Do not place a hot Dutch oven on an area the manual identifies as unsuitable for hot cookware.
- Allow the pot to cool before washing or moving it if thermal shock could affect the enamel, and follow the cookware maker’s care directions.
- Never use a damaged pot with a loose, sharp or badly chipped base.
If the cooktop does not detect the pot
The magnet does not stick
The base may not contain enough magnetic material for induction. Recheck the manufacturer’s specifications. If the maker does not list induction compatibility, choose a different Dutch oven rather than relying on an uncertain test.
The pot is detected briefly, then shuts off
Center it on the zone, confirm that the bottom diameter meets the appliance’s minimum, and remove anything between the base and glass. A zone may also cycle off when the pan is too small for its sensor or when the cooktop’s cookware-detection threshold is not met.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe pot works on one burner but not another
Different zones can have different sizes and sensing arrangements. Move the Dutch oven to a zone whose marked diameter is closest to the flat base. If the manual allows bridge or flexible zones, follow its instructions rather than turning on adjacent zones independently.

The pot heats unevenly
Cast iron spreads heat more slowly than thin cookware, so use moderate power and allow preheating time. Check that the base is flat and that the zone is not substantially larger than the contact area. Induction can heat the magnetic base quickly while the thick iron body takes longer to equalize.
The glass shows marks after use
Stop sliding the pot and inspect both surfaces for grit or rough enamel. Clean according to the cooktop manual. If there is a crack, deep scratch or other structural damage, stop using the appliance and obtain professional guidance from the cooktop manufacturer.
Buying or replacing an enameled Dutch oven for induction
If your current pot fails the checks, select a model whose documentation explicitly names induction. Before purchase or use, record these details:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The exact model and capacity, rather than only “enameled Dutch oven.”
- The manufacturer’s induction statement or symbol.
- The flat-bottom diameter, measured at the actual contact surface.
- Any minimum or maximum pan-size requirement in your cooktop manual.
- Instructions for lifting, cleaning and protecting the glass surface.
A product described as compatible with “all cooktops” is a useful starting point, but the phrase still applies to the named model. Confirm that its base fits your zone and that its weight is acceptable for your appliance’s handling guidance.
Bottom line for everyday use
You can use an enameled cast-iron Dutch oven on induction when its iron base is magnetic, its manufacturer approves induction use, and its bottom is smooth, flat and appropriately sized for the zone. Test with a magnet, verify the dimensions and manual requirements, then lower the heavy pot gently onto the glass. Those checks matter more than the enamel label by itself.
