You may still provide architectural services without registration, but you must describe yourself and market your services without presenting yourself as an architect. The context matters: a purely social reference is treated differently from a business website, CV, social-media profile used to attract work, or a company name.
The short answer: title protected, services not generally prohibited
The legal restriction is aimed at the professional title, not at every activity associated with building design. ARB’s public guidance says the title “architect” can only be used by someone on the Architects Register. Section 20(1) of the Architects Act 1997 states: “A person shall not practise or carry on business under any name, style or title containing the word ‘architect’ unless he is a person registered in Part 1 of the Register.”

That means an unregistered person can generally offer design, drawing, planning or other architectural services, including work for friends or family, provided the person does not practise or carry on business under a name, style or title containing the protected word. Calling the service an architectural service does not automatically make the provider a registered architect; using the standalone professional title can.

What Section 20 actually prohibits
Section 20 covers practising or carrying on business under any name, style or title containing “architect.” It is broader than a person putting the word on a business card. A website heading, social profile, email signature, proposal, invoice, trading name or other promotional material can all form part of how someone carries on business.
The statutory wording also identifies specific exceptions. The words naval architect, landscape architect and golf-course architect are listed exceptions in section 20. An exception is not a general licence to use “architect” in any context: it relates to the named form and the work it describes. If a title is not one of those statutory exceptions, do not assume that adding a descriptive word makes it lawful.
The Act contains provisions for certain companies and partnerships to use “architect” subject to conditions concerning control and management of their architectural work. Those provisions are why a practice name needs separate checking; an employee’s registration alone does not automatically authorise every business name.

Business use versus purely social use
ARB distinguishes professional use from social use by looking at purpose and context. Someone who is not practising may refer to themselves socially as an architect. That is different from using the title while offering services, seeking commissions or presenting professional credentials.
Social-media profiles
A purely social profile is treated differently from a profile that promotes a business or practice. If the profile advertises design services, links to a portfolio for prospective clients, invites enquiries or otherwise helps secure work, ARB is likely to view the title in its professional context. A profile used only for personal conversation is less likely to be professional use, but the surrounding facts still matter.

Changing a profile from “architect” to a neutral description is sensible when the account has any commercial purpose. Keep the description accurate about your training and services, and avoid wording that could lead a reasonable client to believe you are on the Register.
Work for friends and family
Working without charging does not remove the issue. ARB’s guidance treats someone doing architectural work for friends or family as being in practice. The absence of a fee, a formal company or a large client does not turn professional activity into social use.
Can a student or trainee use “architect”?
Not in a business or practice context unless the person is registered. ARB advises avoiding “student architect,” “trainee architect” and “Part 2 architect” on a CV or social profile used to secure work. Those phrases contain or imply the protected professional title and can suggest a status the person does not hold.
“Architecture student” and “architectural assistant” are less likely to create the same problem because they describe study or a job function rather than claiming the protected title. They must still be used honestly. Do not combine a permissible label with a headline, logo or biography that elsewhere presents you as a registered architect.
What about “architectural consultant” or similar wording?
ARB does not treat “architectural consultant” and “architectural assistant” as protected in the same way as the standalone title “architect.” That does not make every use safe. The overall presentation can still mislead the public, especially where the words appear beside claims of professional registration, statutory responsibility or a practice name containing “architect.”

Use a description that states what you actually do: for example, architectural design consultant, architectural technologist, building designer or architectural assistant, where those descriptions are accurate. Explain your qualifications and role plainly, and identify any registered architect who is responsible for work when that is genuinely the arrangement. Do not use a substitute label as a way to imply registration you do not have.

Professional designations and abbreviations
ARB’s policy says the word “architect” appearing in an acronym, including an acronym such as “RIBA,” can raise issues when the designation is used by an unregistered person in connection with business or practice. ARB assesses the circumstances individually. The practical question is not only what the letters stand for, but whether a client could reasonably read the designation as evidence that you are entitled to use the protected title.
Do not place professional initials after your name, in a logo or in a profile in a way that creates a misleading impression. If you hold a qualification or membership that does not itself confer UK registration, describe it precisely and separately from the title “architect.”
Does registration in another country allow UK use of “architect”?
No. Foreign registration is not a substitute for UK registration. ARB states that a person registered abroad still needs to register with ARB before using “architect” in UK business or practice.
You may explain that you are registered in another jurisdiction, but that fact should not be presented as UK ARB registration. A UK-facing website, proposal or social profile should make the jurisdiction clear and avoid an unqualified “architect” heading if you are not on the UK Register.

Company, LLP and practice names
A limited company or LLP that wants to include “architect” in its name must apply to ARB for permission. ARB may authorise the name where a registered architect is responsible for the architectural work; its policy describes the requirement as an architect being in control and management of all the architectural work.
This is a practice-level requirement, not something that can be inferred from having one registered architect on the payroll. The statutory provisions also address firms and partnerships. Follow ARB’s current name-approval process before incorporating, rebranding or trading under a name containing “architect.” Companies House may ask for evidence that the ARB step has been completed.
Before choosing a business name
- Decide whether the proposed name contains the word “architect” or creates the same professional impression.
- Check who will control and manage all architectural work, rather than only who is employed by the business.
- Apply to ARB for permission before using the name or submitting it as an established practice identity.
- Keep the permission evidence with the company’s records because Companies House may request it.
How to check whether someone is registered
ARB maintains an online Architects Register. Search by the person’s name before commissioning them. Every architect has a unique registration number, which you can request from the individual and compare with the Register.
- Ask the person for their exact registered name and ARB registration number.
- Search that name in ARB’s online Register.
- Check that the result identifies the same person, not merely someone with a similar name.
- Keep a dated record of the result with your appointment documents.
- If the person will work through a company, check the practice name and who is responsible for the architectural work as well as the individual’s status.
Registration confirms entitlement to use the title; it does not by itself answer every question about competence, insurance, scope of work or contractual responsibility. Those matters should be addressed separately in your appointment.
How to assess a borderline use
ARB says suspected title misuse is considered case by case, including whether the use is in business or practice and whether it could mislead the public. Use this decision sequence when reviewing a profile, document or proposed name:

- 4 per pack Features Clog Resistant Marker Tip Writes through Dusty, Wet and Oily Surfaces Durable Marker Tip for Writing on Concrete, OSB and Rough Surfaces
- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete
- Hard hat clip- attaches for easy access
- Quick dry time with reduced smearing and marking
- Identify the exact wording. Is it the standalone word “architect,” a compound title, an abbreviation or a company name?
- Identify the setting. Is the wording on a personal social account, a business profile, a CV submitted for work, a proposal, an invoice, signage or a registered company name?
- Identify the purpose. Is it merely social, or does it promote services, secure work, describe professional responsibility or solicit clients?
- Check registration. Search the person on the ARB Register and request the unique registration number.
- Check for a statutory exception. The Act names naval architect, landscape architect and golf-course architect; do not extend those exceptions by analogy.
- Consider the likely impression. Even a technically different phrase can be problematic if a reasonable client would be misled about UK registration.
Where the facts remain uncertain, obtain advice specific to the wording and jurisdiction. ARB notes differing evidence requirements in Scotland and says it takes specific legal advice regarding prosecutions there, so a Scottish dispute should not be assessed solely by copying an England-and-Wales assumption.
What to do if you think a title is being misused
First preserve the evidence: save the webpage, profile, dated proposal, advertisement or company details showing the wording and the context in which it was used. Ask the person or business to clarify their registration status and role. Do not accuse someone publicly on the basis of a similar name or an abbreviated designation alone.
If the concern remains, ARB accepts title-misuse concerns. Provide the exact wording, where it appeared, the date, the person or business involved and why the use appears connected with business or practice. ARB’s assessment is fact-specific, so a complete record of context is more useful than a general assertion that someone “looks unregistered.”

An unregistered designer can reduce risk by describing services without claiming the protected title. A profile might state “architectural design consultant” or “architectural assistant,” if accurate, and explain qualifications, experience and the services offered. It should not use “architect” as the person’s unqualified role, call the business an architecture practice where that implies registration, or suggest that overseas registration is UK registration.
If the project requires a registered architect, identify that requirement at the outset and confirm who will undertake the regulated professional role. Put the division of responsibilities in writing so the client understands who is providing design services and who, if anyone, is acting as the registered architect.
Key distinctions at a glance
| Situation | ARB position described in its guidance | What the reader should do |
|---|---|---|
| Using “architect” in UK business or practice | Requires registration on the Architects Register. | Verify registration before using or accepting the title. |
| Providing architectural services without registration | Generally permitted if the person does not use the protected title in business or practice. | Use an accurate alternative description and avoid misleading presentation. |
| Purely social reference | Treated differently from professional use. | Assess the profile’s purpose and surrounding context. |
| “Student architect,” “trainee architect” or “Part 2 architect” used to obtain work | ARB advises avoiding these labels in business or practice. | Use “architecture student” or “architectural assistant” where accurate. |
| Foreign registration | Does not replace UK ARB registration. | State the foreign jurisdiction and do not use an unqualified UK title. |
| Company or LLP name containing “architect” | Requires an ARB permission process and appropriate control and management of architectural work. | Obtain permission before adopting the name; retain evidence. |
| Naval architect, landscape architect or golf-course architect | Named exceptions appear in section 20. | Use only the specific exception that genuinely describes the work. |
Why the distinction matters to a construction client
A construction client may rely on a title when deciding who is qualified to lead design, coordinate consultants or provide professional advice. Checking the Register prevents a marketing label from being mistaken for UK registration. It also clarifies whether a company’s name has been authorised and who controls the architectural work.
The Register currently contains more than 42,000 architects, according to ARB’s public guidance. That is a rounded, time-sensitive figure rather than a year-specific count. The reliable test for an individual project is the current Register entry and the person’s stated registration number, not a number quoted in an old brochure.
