Choose a dehumidifier by matching its current capacity rating to both the room’s size and how damp it is—not by square footage alone. Before buying, also check how the rating was measured, energy efficiency, drainage, and the room’s operating temperature. The right choice depends on the moisture load and where and how the unit will run.
1. Choosing capacity from square footage alone
Room area matters, but so does the severity of the dampness before dehumidification. ENERGY STAR’s U.S. consumer guidance gives these recommended minimum capacities for portable units:

These are ENERGY STAR recommendations, not guarantees for every room layout or moisture problem. The organization advises choosing a unit that is too large rather than too small. Persistent wetness or water intrusion may have a cause beyond ordinary indoor humidity; a dehumidifier alone should not be assumed to address it. A current pint-per-day rating may look much lower than an older model’s even when the two numbers do not represent a like-for-like comparison. The U.S. Department of Energy changed its dehumidifier test procedure: the newer portable-unit test uses 65°F rather than 80°F, a temperature closer to basement conditions. Because cooler air tends to yield less moisture removal, the reported capacity is lower under the newer method. The change took effect in 2019, with new-method ratings appearing around 2020.

ENERGY STAR gives a rough example: an old 50-pint portable rating corresponds to about 30 pints per day under the newer method. Treat that as an approximate correlation, not a conversion formula; model-specific results can vary. 3. Ignoring energy efficiency
Capacity is only part of the operating picture. Compare the Integrated Energy Factor (IEF), measured in liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour: a higher IEF generally indicates greater efficiency. ENERGY STAR’s current criteria distinguish portable and whole-home equipment, with thresholds that depend on capacity or case volume. Certification can help screen options, but check the criteria that apply to the type of unit you are considering. ENERGY STAR key product criteria

ENERGY STAR says a certified dehumidifier uses 20% less energy than a similarly sized conventional unit to remove the same amount of moisture. 4. Buying before deciding where the water will go
A portable unit’s bucket needs to be emptied. Some models also support continuous drainage through a hose routed to a floor drain or sump. Before choosing a unit and setting its location, verify that the model supports the drainage method you want and that the hose can reach the drain in the intended setup. Check connection compatibility rather than assuming a hose will fit.

For a cool basement or other cold space
If the room often falls below 65°F, look for a model specified to operate at lower temperatures. Frost can form on cooling coils below that point and interfere with operation; some units have an anti-frost sensor. For moisture affecting more than one room
For certain homes in humid climates that have central air and consistently elevated humidity, ENERGY STAR identifies a whole-home system as a possible option. Unlike a portable room unit, this is a ducted installation decision: use professional sizing and installation rather than treating a whole-home system as simply a larger portable appliance.
