The database described in the Building Design + Construction headline cannot be identified from the available record. That means its owner, product coverage, geographic scope, fields, verification method, access terms and current status should not be inferred from the headline alone. Two separate, documented examples show what these resources can look like: Declare, described in a 2016 Living Future interview as an ingredient-transparency platform, and a USGBC–The Home Depot green-home product database announced in 2012. They are different initiatives, and neither is confirmed as the database in the headline.
For a designer, contractor, specifier or owner, the practical lesson is to treat a product database as evidence to evaluate—not as proof that every listed product is safe, sustainable or suitable for a project. Start by identifying the database and its governing organization, then check exactly what each entry discloses, when it was updated and how the information was verified.

What the headline establishes—and what it does not
The wording “a new database sheds more light on building products’ content” describes an editorial subject, not a technical specification. The available exact-title search did not return the article or a reliable passage naming the database. Consequently, no supported statement can be made about the database’s name, owner, launch date, number of listings, product categories, countries served, search interface, subscription requirements or update schedule.
That uncertainty matters because databases that sound similar can serve very different purposes. One may publish ingredient disclosures; another may sort products by energy, water or recycled-content attributes; a third may simply aggregate manufacturer marketing information. A listing can also be product-specific, family-level or generic to a brand. Those distinctions affect whether the information is useful for a specification, a material-health review, a code submittal or an owner’s purchasing decision.

How to read an unresolved reference
- Do not transfer figures from a known transparency program to the unidentified database.
- Do not assume that “listed” means independently tested, certified or compliant with a project standard.
- Do not treat a historical launch count as a current inventory.
- Record the database name, operator, entry date and access date in the project file so another reviewer can reproduce the check.
Two documented examples that should not be conflated
The following examples are useful for understanding the range of building-product information services. They are not evidence that either one is the unnamed resource in the Building Design + Construction headline.
| Resource | What the dated source documents | Numbers and date limits | What is not established for the headline’s database |
|---|---|---|---|
| Declare | A 2016 Living Future interview describes an ingredient-transparency platform. It called for ingredient reporting to 100 parts per million for a minimum of 99% by weight of a product’s ingredients. Ingredients were screened against the Living Building Challenge Red List, with identified Red List ingredients highlighted. The database was organized by manufacturer and offered filters for declaration status and CSI MasterFormat division/section; the interview also mentions search improvements and product images. | 100 ppm and minimum 99% by weight are program-description figures from 2016. They are not a current specification unless confirmed directly with the program. | Its ownership, current rules, current catalog size, access terms and present-day interface are not established for the unnamed database. |
| USGBC–The Home Depot green-home product database | A 2012 USGBC press release announced a separate database of green-home products sold through The Home Depot. | The release reported more than 2,500 products at launch in 2012. That is a historical launch-era count, not a current total. | Its relationship, if any, to the headline’s database is unknown. The available evidence does not establish its current operation, fields or verification process. |
| Database in the Building Design + Construction headline | The exact-title record identifies a new database as the article’s subject but does not provide a reliable name or passage describing it. | Not stated. | Owner, scope, fields, review method, update date, geography, access and catalog size all require confirmation from the article or the database operator. |
What “building-product content” can mean
Before using a listing, determine which type of content it actually supplies. “Content” may refer to physical ingredients, environmental indicators, performance data or sales information. These are not interchangeable.
Ingredient or constituent disclosure
An ingredient disclosure identifies substances or materials in a product, sometimes with a reporting threshold. The 2016 description of Declare is an example: it specified a threshold of 100 ppm and coverage of at least 99% by weight, then flagged ingredients appearing on the Living Building Challenge Red List. A threshold still leaves a defined portion of product mass outside the disclosure, so reviewers should read the program’s rules rather than interpret “disclosed” as “every molecule identified.”

Environmental or green-product attributes
A green-home catalog may collect attributes such as efficiency, recycled content or other sustainability characteristics without publishing a complete ingredient list. The 2012 USGBC–The Home Depot announcement is evidence of this type of product-oriented directory, but it does not establish that every entry included material composition or third-party verification.
Commercial and classification data
Directories may also provide manufacturer names, product images, categories, model numbers, availability or CSI MasterFormat classification. Those fields help a team find and specify products, but they do not by themselves validate health, environmental or code claims.
A due-diligence workflow for using any product database
- Identify the operator. Capture the organization’s name, the database’s official title and the page or record where the data appears. A trade-publication reference is not a substitute for the operator’s own methodology.
- Read the methodology before searching. Look for definitions of “ingredient,” “product,” “disclosure,” “certified,” “screened” and “verified.” Note any reporting threshold, exclusions, confidentiality treatment or allowed estimation.
- Confirm the exact product. Match manufacturer, product line, model or formulation, size and intended use. A family-level entry may not describe every variant, color, adhesive, coating or accessory.
- Check the date. Record the entry’s publication or revision date and the date you accessed it. Formulations, factories and ownership can change; a 2016 description cannot establish a 2026 rule.
- Separate disclosure from approval. An ingredient list tells you what the program says is present or absent. It does not automatically establish code compliance, indoor-air performance, fire rating, durability, warranty or suitability for a particular assembly.
- Review verification. Determine whether information is manufacturer-declared, document-reviewed, laboratory-tested, audited or certified by an independent body. If the method is not stated, mark verification as “not stated” rather than assuming it.
- Check project geography and availability. A catalog can include products unavailable in your country, region or procurement channel. Confirm the seller, manufacturing location, lead time and current specification before substitution.
- Archive the evidence. Save the disclosure or export permitted by the service, along with the access date and the product submittal. This creates an audit trail if the online record changes.

- Governance: Who owns and funds the service? Is there a published standard, advisory body or conflict-of-interest policy?
- Coverage: Which divisions, product types, manufacturers and geographic markets are included? Are discontinued or custom products excluded?
- Data granularity: Is the record for a precise model, a product family or a generic category? Does it identify percentages, ranges, chemical names or only broad attributes?
- Thresholds and exclusions: What concentration threshold applies? Are intentionally added substances treated differently from residuals, impurities or process chemicals?
- Verification: Who reviews submissions, what documents are required and what happens when a formulation changes?
- Freshness: Is there a revision date, expiration date or re-attestation requirement? A large catalog with stale records may be less useful than a smaller, maintained one.
- Search and export: Can users filter by manufacturer, declaration status, CSI MasterFormat division/section or product type? Can the record be downloaded for a submittal package?
- Access: Is the service open, account-based, paid or limited by region? Are records available to subcontractors, owners and public reviewers?
How the documented Declare example can inform a review
The 2016 Living Future interview provides a concrete model for reading an ingredient-disclosure entry. Its reported 100-ppm threshold and minimum 99%-by-weight coverage describe the program’s reporting rule at that time. A reviewer could therefore ask three precise questions: which ingredients fall below the threshold, whether the product record covers the exact formulation, and how Red List screening was performed. The Red List highlighting is a screening aid, not a substitute for checking the project’s own material requirements.

Those interface features can make a catalog easier to navigate, but usability does not establish data accuracy. How the 2012 USGBC–The Home Depot example should be used
The USGBC press release’s “more than 2,500 products” figure describes the separate database at its 2012 launch. It can illustrate the scale a retail-oriented directory once reported, but it cannot be used as a current inventory, a count of ingredient disclosures or evidence about the unidentified database. If a project team encounters that figure in older material, label it explicitly as a launch-era number and seek a current catalog or operator statement.

Common failure modes and corrections
Assuming the first matching name is the right database
Several services can use terms such as “green,” “product,” “materials” or “transparency.” Verify the operator and article reference before importing a statistic or methodology.
Using a catalog entry as a blanket product approval
Keep material disclosure, environmental certification, technical performance and code compliance as separate review tracks. Require the documents specified by the project manual for each track.

Ignoring formulation and date changes
Ask the manufacturer or database operator whether the record applies to the supplied batch or current model. Preserve the dated record used for the specification.

Comparing unlike coverage
A directory with thousands of retail listings and a smaller ingredient-focused program may answer different questions. Compare fields, thresholds and verification before judging one as more complete.
A practical record for project files
For each product investigated, keep a short log containing the database name and operator, exact product identifier, manufacturer, disclosure type, reporting threshold, verification method, record date, access date, geography, URL or export reference and unresolved questions. If a field is absent, write “not stated” and request clarification rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
This approach gives a construction team a defensible basis for substitutions and material reviews even when a database is new, renamed or later revised. It also prevents historical examples—such as the 2016 Declare description or the 2012 USGBC–The Home Depot launch count—from being mistaken for current facts about another service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat readers can responsibly conclude
The available record supports a narrow conclusion: building-product databases can make material information easier to find, but the specific database named in the Building Design + Construction headline remains unidentified here. Declare provides a dated example of ingredient disclosure with a reported 100-ppm threshold, minimum 99%-by-weight coverage and Red List screening. The USGBC–The Home Depot announcement provides a separate, historical example of a green-home product directory with more than 2,500 listings at launch in 2012. Their different owners, purposes and dates are precisely why a project team must verify the database behind any current claim before using it in a specification or procurement decision.
