It is useful for everything from simple open boxes and trays to hinged cases, electronics housings, drawer inserts, flex-hinge designs, and workshop fixtures. The important qualification is that it generates geometry—not a universal machine setting. You still need to measure your stock, calibrate the laser’s kerf compensation, verify the imported scale, and make a test cut before committing a full sheet.
What Boxes.py actually does
Boxes.py is free, GPL v3+ software for creating parametric designs intended for laser cutting. You choose a generator, enter dimensions and material settings, and receive a vector drawing that can be inspected and sent through your laser-cutting software.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It is available in three practical forms:
- Online generator: the quickest route for choosing a design and entering its parameters.
- Inkscape plug-in: useful if Inkscape is already part of your vector-design workflow.
- Python library: intended for adapting existing generators or writing custom ones.
The project is written in Python 3. The command-line interface, web interface, Inkscape extension, and Jupyter notebook example sit on top of an architecture that separates generators, drawing primitives, edge types, and rendering. That makes Boxes.py more than a collection of downloadable templates: it is a parameterized 2D fabrication library.

What can you make?
The name is narrower than the catalog. Alongside ordinary rectangular boxes, the generator reference includes:
- Open, closed, universal, sliding-lid, sliding-drawer, and two-piece boxes
- Hinged and integrated-hinge boxes
- Card boxes, dice boxes, display cases, and electronics housings
- Rack enclosures and EuroRack-style projects
- Trays, drawer inserts, shelves, and storage components
- Flex boxes, book-style hinged designs, bread boxes, and other living-hinge projects
- Laser holdfasts, clamps, angled-cut jigs, laptop stands, phone holders, motor mounts, pulleys, and robot-arm parts
The catalog is organized into groups including Boxes, Boxes with flex, Trays and Drawer Inserts, Shelves, Parts and Samples, Misc, and Unstable. That last category matters: a listed generator is not automatically production-ready. Treat unfamiliar or unstable designs as experiments and inspect the output carefully.
The two settings that determine whether the parts fit
1. Actual material thickness
Enter the thickness of the sheet you are really cutting—not merely the number printed on the package. A sheet sold as 3 mm, 1/8 inch, or another nominal size may vary by supplier, batch, veneer, finish, or location on the sheet.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Boxes.py uses material thickness to calculate finger joints, hinges, and other features. The project documentation recommends measuring every sheet. Even a hundredth of a millimeter can noticeably change the stiffness of a plywood press fit; harder or more brittle materials can be more sensitive still.
A digital caliper for measuring sheet thickness is therefore a practical part of the workflow, not an unnecessary precision-tool upgrade. Measure several points on the sheet, particularly if the stock looks uneven, and use a representative value—or the value appropriate to the area you will cut.
2. Burn, or kerf compensation
The burn parameter compensates for material removed by the laser. Boxes.py describes it as approximately related to the radius of the cut, or half the kerf width. The correct value depends on the machine, optics, focus, material, thickness, cutting settings, and the fit you want.
In general:
- Larger burn: tighter press fits.
- Smaller burn: looser fits.
Do not copy a burn value from an online project and assume it will work on your machine. A plywood press fit that assembles comfortably on one cutter may be impossible to assemble—or too loose to hold—on another.

- 【Multifunctional use】: The unfinished wood has strong machinability.it is applicable to all crafts and woodworking. you can paint or write something on the surface.Perfect for DIY decoration projects, small house building, aircraft, boat, architectural model making, laser projects, staining, painting and other DIY craft projects.
- 【Easy to cut and shape】 These basswood sheets are soft and uniform in density, allowing you to cut, carve, or shape them easily with basic tools. Whether you are a beginner or a professional craftsman, you can achieve precise results without extra effort. The wood holds details well and resists splitting, making it ideal for intricate designs and custom projects.
The recommended starting method is to cut a calibration rectangle, measure the difference between its nominal and actual size, and use approximately half that difference as an initial burn value. The BurnTest generator can place several values in one test run so you can compare fits efficiently. Fine adjustments matter: changes of 0.01 mm, and sometimes 0.005 mm, can alter the force required for a plywood press fit.
Material behavior matters as well. Spongier wood may be suitable for an interference fit, while brittle acrylic may need clearance so the parts can be assembled with adhesive rather than forced together.
Internal dimensions are usually not external dimensions
Boxes.py generally treats entered dimensions as internal dimensions unless the selected generator specifically offers an outside-dimension option. A box whose entered width, height, and depth are each 100 mm will normally be larger externally because its walls occupy space.
Before generating a design, check:
- Whether the chosen generator labels dimensions as internal or external
- Whether the lid, hinges, feet, handles, or other features add to the overall envelope
- Whether the finished box will fit the shelf, drawer, rack, or opening where it must go
- Whether the selected dimensions leave enough room for the requested features
Many generators do not reject every nonsensical combination. Negative dimensions, insufficient clearance for handles, or a hinge that collides with another feature may still produce an output file. A successful render is not proof that the design is physically plausible.

Finger joints, dovetails, flex cuts, and corners
Finger and dovetail joints
Finger joints are the primary joining method for many Boxes.py designs. They support 90-degree edges and T-connections, and their sizing scales with material thickness to preserve useful proportions. The library also supports dovetail joints for pieces that meet in the same plane.
Joint geometry is only half of the result. Actual assembly depends on the measured stock and calibrated burn. If a joint is too tight, forcing it can split plywood or crack acrylic. If it is too loose, glue or a redesign may be needed.

Flex cuts and living hinges
Flex cuts remove material in a pattern that allows a sheet to bend or stretch in one direction. Boxes.py uses these patterns for rounded edges, living hinges, flex boxes, book-style cases, and related designs.
These designs deserve a more cautious test than a basic flat-sided box. Check the direction of bending, the remaining web between cuts, the material’s grain and brittleness, and whether repeated movement is appropriate for the stock. A generated flex pattern is a starting design, not a guarantee of hinge life.

A laser beam—and especially a milling tool—is round, so an inside corner is not always perfectly sharp. Boxes.py provides treatments such as loop, corner, and backarc options. These choices have different visual and dimensional effects. Inspect the actual paths in the target software rather than assuming every internal corner will behave the same way.
Output formats and the scale trap
SVG is the primary direct output. The documentation also supports PostScript without the external pstoedit helper. With pstoedit installed, additional choices can include DXF, G-code, PDF, and PLT/HPGL, along with other formats supported by that tool.
SVG and DXF can be interpreted at the wrong scale by downstream applications. This is one of the easiest ways to waste a sheet: the drawing looks correct on screen but imports at an incorrect physical size.
Use the reference parameter to include a rectangle with a known length. After importing the file into your laser software, measure that rectangle in the software and confirm that it matches. Also check:

- The document units and import units
- The overall dimensions of the design
- Whether the drawing has been resized to fit a page or workspace
- Whether duplicate or overlapping paths are present
- Whether cut, score, and engraving operations have been assigned correctly in the downstream software
For a LightBurn-style workflow that performs its own kerf handling and line optimization, the Boxes.py manual gives a specific approach: set burn to zero, use the absolute offset mechanism for the actual kerf, and enable removal of overlapping lines. That instruction is workflow-specific; do not apply it automatically to every laser-control application.
A reliable Boxes.py workflow
- Choose the generator. Start with a stable, simple design if you are learning. Use the catalog description to determine whether it is a box, tray, enclosure, flex design, or fixture.
- Convert dimensions to millimeters. Boxes.py generally uses millimeters and does not provide a unit-switching option. Convert inch measurements before entering them.
- Measure the stock. Use a caliper and record the actual thickness of the sheet you intend to cut.
- Decide whether dimensions are internal or external. Check the selected generator’s options and account for walls, lids, hinges, handles, and other projections.
- Calibrate fit. Run BurnTest or an equivalent test pattern for the exact machine-material combination.
- Generate the design. Enter the calibrated thickness and burn value, then render the vector output.
- Inspect the geometry. Look for implausible dimensions, collisions, incomplete features, overly narrow webs, and corners that may not assemble as expected.
- Export in the format your cutting workflow actually needs. SVG is usually the simplest starting point, but verify the downstream application’s import behavior.
- Check scale with a reference. Confirm a known-length rectangle after import. Do not rely only on the on-screen appearance.
- Preview and test-cut. Cut a small joint or a reduced version before using an entire sheet.
- Cut the final parts and assemble carefully. If the fit is wrong, stop and adjust thickness or burn rather than forcing fragile parts.
Choosing sheet stock
The generated geometry does not make all sheet goods interchangeable. Plywood, basswood, acrylic, and other materials differ in thickness tolerance, stiffness, brittleness, adhesive content, surface finish, and cutting behavior.
If you are buying stock for these projects, laser-cutting plywood sheets can be a sensible starting category, but verify the advertised thickness, flatness, construction, and suitability for your particular machine. “Laser-ready” is not a universal safety or performance guarantee. Confirm the material with the cutter manufacturer’s guidance and your own settings.
Do not assume that a design calibrated for plywood will transfer directly to acrylic. Acrylic may require a different burn value and more clearance, especially where adhesive rather than a press fit is intended. Always test unfamiliar stock.

What Boxes.py does not do
Boxes.py is a design generator, not a complete CAM verifier, material database, laser-safety system, or universal machine-control platform. It does not know whether your machine is properly focused, ventilated, aligned, powered, or suitable for the material you loaded.
Cutting quality still depends on the laser, optics, focus, power, speed, air assist, ventilation, material composition, actual thickness, and kerf. Follow the laser manufacturer’s safety and materials guidance, including restrictions on hazardous materials. The software’s successful output is only one step in a safe fabrication process.
Can you sell objects made with Boxes.py?
Boxes.py identifies itself as GPL v3+ software. Its FAQ distinguishes between distributing the software and selling physical boxes made from generated drawings. It also says users may sell modified drawings, while cautioning against simply selling unchanged files that people can obtain for free.

If you plan to sell digital files, bundle a design into a commercial product, distribute modified generators, or build a business around the software, examine the applicable license obligations for your specific distribution model.
Optional equipment considerations
You do not need to buy every laser accessory to use Boxes.py. The required equipment depends on whether you own a cutter, use a makerspace, or send files to a cutting service.
- Caliper: strongly justified because material thickness directly affects the design.
- Sheet stock: required for physical production, but select it for your machine and application.
- Honeycomb bed: an optional machine accessory whose size and compatibility must match the cutter.
- Air assist, exhaust, and masking: machine- and material-dependent accessories, not Boxes.py requirements.
- Makerspace or cutting service: a practical alternative if you need files cut but do not own a suitable laser.
Boxes.py includes laser-specific fixtures such as a laser holdfast, but that does not mean every user needs a particular bed or accessory. Treat those designs as helpful examples and verify compatibility with your equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Boxes.py use inches?
Boxes.py generally expects millimeters and does not provide a unit-switching option. Convert inch measurements before entering them.
Why did my Boxes.py press fit come out too tight or too loose?
The most common causes are an incorrect material-thickness value or an unsuitable burn setting. Measure the actual sheet and run BurnTest for the exact machine-material combination.
Are Boxes.py dimensions internal or external?
They are generally internal unless the selected generator specifically offers an outside-dimension option. Check the generator’s parameters and account for wall thickness and projecting features.
Can Boxes.py create more than boxes?
Yes. Its catalog includes trays, drawer inserts, shelves, display cases, electronics housings, rack enclosures, flex-hinge designs, jigs, clamps, stands, mounts, and other fabrication parts.
Can I sell products made with Boxes.py?
The project FAQ says users may sell physical products made from generated drawings and may sell modified drawings, while cautioning against simply reselling unchanged files available for free. Review the GPL v3+ terms and seek legal advice for a business-specific distribution model.
The Bottom Line
Boxes.py is an unusually capable starting point for laser-cut construction: it can turn a measured material and a set of dimensions into box joints, hinges, trays, enclosures, and workshop parts. The dependable results come from treating it as parametric design software rather than a one-click cutting guarantee. Measure the stock, calibrate burn, verify scale, inspect the paths, and test-cut first.
