Best Z-Wave Programmable Thermostats for Smart Heating and Cooling

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most homes with central, low-voltage HVAC and an existing Z-Wave hub, the Resideo/Honeywell Home T6 Pro Z-Wave is the strongest current choice. Models TH6320ZW2003/U and SmartStart model TH6320ZW2007/U support scheduled programming, remote setpoint changes, multi-stage systems, heat pumps, and hub-based automation.

That recommendation does not apply to every heating system. Z-Wave thermostats require a compatible controller, and a low-voltage central-HVAC thermostat cannot directly replace a 120/240-volt electric-baseboard thermostat. Check the system voltage, wiring, HVAC stages, and controller support before buying.

What a Z-Wave thermostat actually does

Z-Wave is a local wireless protocol that lets a compatible hub, security panel, or home-automation controller communicate with the thermostat. Depending on the thermostat and the integration, the controller may be able to:

#1 Best Overall
Honeywell Home TH6320ZW2007/U Z-Wave T6 Pro Programmable Touchscreen Thermostat with SmartStart, Low Voltage, UWP Mounting System, Cover Plate, Color - White
  • Product Overview Energy-saving, Z-Wave Thermostat The T6 Pro Z-Wave Thermostat provides a large, sleek touchscreen display and offers versatility and convenient comfort control
  • Compatible with Z-Wave controls
  • Power comes via 3 AA batteries or hardwired through a C-wire
  • Schedule thermostat or change temperature based on occupancy of the Z-Wave control to save on home energy costs
  • Main Features Up to 3H/2C Heat Pump systems or up to 2H/2C Conventional systems Z-Wave Plus certified with improvement in range, battery life, and bandwidth Backwards compatibility General
  • Read room temperature and, on supported models, humidity.
  • Change heating and cooling setpoints.
  • Switch between heat, cool, auto, and off modes.
  • Change fan modes where supported.
  • Run schedules and scenes.
  • Use occupancy, door-lock, alarm, time, geofencing, or sensor events to change HVAC settings.

The wall thermostat generally remains usable if the hub is unavailable, but hub-created schedules, scenes, remote access, and geofencing may stop working. The exact controls exposed to your system depend on the thermostat, Z-Wave command classes, hub firmware, and integration. The Z-Wave Alliance thermostat catalog lists capabilities such as mode, setpoint, fan mode, operating state, temperature, humidity, battery, and configuration support, but certification does not guarantee that every hub exposes every feature.

Best overall for central HVAC: T6 Pro Z-Wave

The T6 Pro Z-Wave TH6320ZW2003/U is the best-supported choice in this product group for a typical U.S. central HVAC installation already using Z-Wave. The TH6320ZW2007/U is the SmartStart variant for controllers that support that enrollment method.

What it supports

  • Seven-day, 5-1-1, and 5-2 programmable schedules.
  • Conventional systems up to two heating and two cooling stages.
  • Heat-pump systems up to three heating and two cooling stages.
  • Battery operation with three AA batteries, C-wire operation, or both.
  • Temperature and humidity display.
  • Occupancy-based schedule or setpoint changes through a compatible Z-Wave controller.
  • Outdoor-sensor support for applications such as dual-fuel and auxiliary-heat lockout.
  • Z-Wave Plus gateway/controller compatibility and a five-year warranty listed by Resideo.

Resideo lists a compatibility-checking path and product specifications. Its technical material also identifies Z-Wave 5.0 chipset encryption. For full functionality, Resideo recommends a security-enabled Z-Wave Plus controller; not every generic controller will expose the same thermostat controls.

What it does not do

The T6 Pro Z-Wave is not the same product as the T6 Pro Smart Wi-Fi. It is designed to communicate through a Z-Wave controller or gateway, not to be registered directly as a standalone thermostat in the Resideo consumer app. Resideo’s Wi-Fi model documentation treats Z-Wave specifications as not applicable to that Wi-Fi version.

2GIG STZ1-345 Z-Wave 700 Thermostat for Security Panels GC2, GC3, GC2e | Z-Wave 700 Series | 345 MHz Compatibility | Programmable Thermostat | Heat & Cool Control | LCD Display | Fan Control
  • Advanced Z-Wave Plus 700 Series chipset: Delivers extended wireless range, improved battery life for battery-powered operation, and enhanced network reliability for superior smart home integration
  • Large LED backlit display: Ensures clear visibility of temperature readings and settings in various lighting conditions, day or night
  • Flexible dual-power options (4xAA batteries or 24VAC C-wire): Allows for versatile installation with or without a dedicated C-wire, simplifying setup in various homes
  • Pre-programmed energy-saving schedule: Offers immediate energy efficiency right out of the box with default settings designed to reduce HVAC usage
  • Remote access and alert capabilities: Supports remote temperature adjustments, schedule changes, and system alerts through a connected Z-Wave hub or Alarm.com service, minimizing unnecessary service callbacks

It is programmable, but that does not make it an adaptive learning thermostat. Its schedules are configured at the thermostat or through the controller; occupancy and other automatic behavior normally come from the compatible Z-Wave automation system.

For electric baseboards: Stelpro Ki, with a discontinuation warning

The Stelpro Ki Z-Wave thermostat, model STZW402+, addresses a different problem. It was designed for 120/240-volt electric baseboards and convectors, with listed loads of 150–2,000 watts at 120 volts and 300–4,000 watts at 240 volts. Stelpro states that the Z-Wave version does not communicate with fan heaters, unlike its former Zigbee version.

Stelpro marks the Ki as discontinued. The official discontinued-products listing means it should not be presented as a normal current retail recommendation. It may still matter when replacing an existing unit or when independently verified remaining or used stock is available.

Do not use the Ki as a replacement for a conventional 24-volt central-air thermostat, and do not use the T6 Pro on a line-voltage baseboard circuit. Stelpro’s installation documentation describes the relevant line-voltage exclusions and wiring requirements.

Legacy alternative: GoControl GC-TBZ48 and GC-TBZ48L

The GoControl GC-TBZ48 family is a battery-powered or 24-volt-powered Z-Wave thermostat for central HVAC. The Z-Wave Alliance catalog documents support for standard and heat-pump systems, single- and multi-stage operation, and modes including heat, cool, auto, auxiliary or emergency heat, and fan-only on the Z-Wave Plus entry.

It remains a possible value option only when the exact model, condition, price, and availability are verified. Catalog documentation does not establish broad current retail availability, modern app support, or compatibility with every current hub. Expect an older interface and confirm the controller’s thermostat integration before purchasing.

Compatibility checklist before buying

  1. Identify the voltage. The T6 Pro is for low-voltage HVAC control. It is not a direct controller for 120/240-volt baseboard loads.
  2. Identify the equipment. Confirm whether the system is conventional gas, oil, or electric; a heat pump; multi-stage; dual-fuel; or equipped with auxiliary or emergency heat.
  3. Document the wiring. Photograph the existing terminals and follow the model’s installation guide. Wire colors are not a reliable substitute for terminal identification.
  4. Check power options. The T6 Pro can use three AA batteries, a C-wire, or both, but a C-wire alone does not prove HVAC compatibility. Battery operation may affect wake-up and reporting behavior.
  5. Check the controller. Verify that the hub, alarm panel, or home-automation platform supports thermostat devices, secure inclusion, setpoints, modes, fan control, schedules, and temperature or humidity reporting as needed.
  6. Check security requirements. Resideo recommends a security-enabled Z-Wave Plus controller for the T6 Pro’s full feature set. SmartStart requires a controller that supports SmartStart.
  7. Check local operation. Decide which functions must continue at the wall if the hub or internet is offline.

For unusual wiring, multiple stages, heat pumps, dual fuel, or auxiliary heat, have an HVAC professional verify the installation. Incorrect reversing-valve, staging, or auxiliary-heat configuration can produce cooling when heating is requested, unnecessary auxiliary-heat operation, or poor comfort.

How pairing generally works

Menu names vary by hub and firmware, so there is no universal inclusion procedure. The normal sequence is:

Rank #4
Smart Thermostat
  • Works with Alexa for voice control (hub required, Alexa device and hub sold separately).
  • Z-Wave compatible - Ver. 4.5.5
  • Supports Z-wave Flirs Functionality. The GC-TBZ48 works with most contemporary Central HVAC systems whether standard or heat pump which makes this thermostat a great solution for all retrofit or new construction needs. Wall mount or mounts on single-gang junction box
  • Works On Standard Hvac Systems With 2-stage Heat & 2-stage Cool. USB firmware upgrade ability
  • Works On Heat Pump Hvac Systems With 3-stage Heat & 2-stage Cool
  1. Put the Z-Wave controller into inclusion, add, or install mode.
  2. Wake the thermostat if its display is asleep.
  3. Open the thermostat’s Z-Wave inclusion menu.
  4. Start inclusion from the thermostat.
  5. Wait for the controller to identify the device.
  6. Assign its name, room, system type, and heating and cooling capabilities.
  7. Test heat, cool, mode, fan, and setpoint control.
  8. Confirm that the wall interface still operates independently.

For the legacy GoControl GC-TBZ48, the manual specifies holding the FAN button for five seconds, selecting Z-Wave, and confirming installation. A successful connection displays SUCCESS; a failed attempt displays FAIL. See the GoControl instructions for the model-specific procedure.

If inclusion or operation fails

  • Exclude the thermostat first, even if it appears unused.
  • Move the hub temporarily closer to the thermostat.
  • Wake the thermostat before starting inclusion.
  • Check whether it is still associated with another Z-Wave network.
  • Use secure inclusion or SmartStart when required and supported.
  • Confirm that the controller supports the thermostat device type.
  • Power-cycle or reboot only as directed by the manufacturer.
  • Before a factory reset, document HVAC configuration and staging settings.
  • After resetting, reconfigure the system type and stages.
  • Test the thermostat at the wall before troubleshooting the Z-Wave network.

A delayed response after a cooling change may be intentional. The GoControl documentation describes minimum off-time and run-time protections intended to prevent compressor short cycling. Do not defeat compressor-protection delays simply because an automation appears slow.

Z-Wave versus Wi-Fi thermostats

Consideration Z-Wave thermostat Wi-Fi thermostat
Hub Usually requires a Z-Wave hub, panel, or controller Usually connects directly to home Wi-Fi
Network Local mesh network Home Wi-Fi network
Cloud dependence Depends on the controller and its services Often depends on the manufacturer’s cloud and app
Interoperability Can work across compatible Z-Wave ecosystems Often more closely tied to the manufacturer’s platform
Remote access Through a hub, security panel, or service Usually through the manufacturer’s app
Best fit Homes already using Z-Wave or a compatible security system Buyers wanting a standalone smart thermostat

Z-Wave does not automatically mean cloud-free, and Wi-Fi does not automatically mean unusable locally. A locally controlled platform such as Home Assistant may reduce cloud dependence, while a security-provider panel may route remote access through its own service. Remote control is therefore a property of the complete thermostat-and-controller setup, not just the radio protocol.

When another approach is better

  • Choose Wi-Fi if you do not already own a Z-Wave controller and want a standalone app-based thermostat. Compare the hub cost and setup complexity before choosing Z-Wave.
  • Consider Zigbee or Matter if your existing home-automation platform has stronger support for those protocols.
  • Choose a conventional programmable thermostat if you do not need remote access or automation.
  • Use professional HVAC controls for proprietary communicating systems or equipment that does not expose conventional thermostat terminals.

Buying decision

  • Central low-voltage HVAC plus an existing compatible Z-Wave hub: choose the T6 Pro Z-Wave, using the exact model number required by the retailer or controller.
  • Central HVAC plus a SmartStart-compatible hub: consider the TH6320ZW2007/U.
  • 120/240-volt baseboard or convector heating: do not buy the T6 Pro. Select a purpose-built line-voltage thermostat; the Stelpro Ki is relevant only as a discontinued replacement-market option.
  • No Z-Wave hub: compare the cost of adding a controller with Wi-Fi or another ecosystem.
  • Multi-stage, heat-pump, dual-fuel, auxiliary-heat, or unusual wiring: verify compatibility with the manufacturer’s documentation and consider professional installation.
  • Considering GoControl: confirm the exact GC-TBZ48 or GC-TBZ48L model, condition, current stock, and hub support before purchase.
