For a mixed-brand installation spanning Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi and other protocols, Homey Pro (Early 2023) was the more capable choice. Neither is the right answer for every home.
The best smart-home purchase depends on three things: the ecosystem already in your home, the job the device must perform, and whether the installation suits the building’s wiring, network and HVAC systems. This is a retrospective 2024 roundup, so prices, product listings, compatibility and software support should be checked again before buying.
Quick picks: the best smart-home products of 2024
The 2024 buying guides from Tom's Guide, PCWorld and Android Authority treated smart-home equipment as a set of categories rather than a single ranking. That is the more useful approach: a smart plug, thermostat, camera and home controller solve different problems.

Best dedicated smart-home controller: Amazon Echo Hub
For an Alexa household that wants a dedicated control panel rather than another general-purpose tablet, the Amazon Echo Hub is the clearest 2024 recommendation. Tom's Guide named it the best smart-home device in its July 24, 2024 awards coverage.
The Echo Hub has an 8-inch display and can be wall-mounted or placed on a tabletop. Its customizable dashboards are intended for home control: users can organize devices by room or type, run routines, view compatible camera feeds and move between functions such as Ring security and thermostat management. That makes it particularly attractive in a new build or remodel where a permanent control point can be planned near an entry, kitchen or central hallway.
#1 Best Overall
- Audible Notifications - be informed of system alerts and events with your selected sounds/tones as well as text-to-speech messages like “the garage door is still open!”
- 100-in-1 Audible Device! Customizable tones/sounds and custom spoken text-to-speech messages means your SpeakerHub can act as a driveway alert, security siren, water leak alarm, door chime and you’ve-got-mail announcer!
- Smart Design – SpeakerHub is powerful yet compact and portable. Handsome and measuring less than 3 inches across, it will look great anywhere in your home. Simply connect it to WiFi (only), and USB power (with the included AC adapter)
- Private & Secure – SpeakerHub is smart, but it does not have a microphone and can not listen. Be secure in your privacy and safely place this smart speaker anywhere in your home or business
- Requirements – Android or Apple smartphone, stable WiFi connection (SpeakerHub does not have an Ethernet port), and USB power or an AC outlet nearby for the plug-in power adapter
Its strongest case is not that it does everything, but that it gives an Alexa installation a visible, room-oriented interface. A wall panel can be faster for checking cameras, turning off lights or adjusting a thermostat than opening a phone app or issuing several voice commands.
The limitation is ecosystem dependence. The Echo Hub should be presented as the best dedicated controller for Alexa-compatible homes, not as a universal Matter replacement. Camera support and manufacturer-specific features can still depend on the relevant platform integration. If a household is primarily based on Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings or a mixed-protocol hub, another controller may be a better foundation.
Best multi-protocol hub: Homey Pro (Early 2023)
For an advanced installation containing products from several brands, Homey Pro (Early 2023) is the more ambitious choice. Homey's documentation lists support for Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave Plus, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, infrared and 433 MHz devices. It also describes local processing and automation across otherwise different protocols.
That breadth is useful in a renovation or larger property where the equipment list may include existing Z-Wave switches, Zigbee sensors, Matter devices, infrared-controlled equipment and Wi-Fi products. Instead of designing the entire home around one manufacturer, an enthusiast can use Homey as an automation layer across multiple technologies.
The trade-off is cost and complexity. Android Authority characterized Homey Pro as a powerful but expensive standalone hub. It is a better fit for someone prepared to plan device compatibility and automation flows than for a homeowner who wants the simplest possible setup.
There is also an important version and date distinction. Homey's current support documentation states that the Early 2023 model supports Matter 1.2 and Matter-over-Thread. That should not be confused with what was available during the 2024 buying period, or with a promise that every future Matter device will expose every feature through Homey. Confirm the exact model, firmware support and device integration before designing around it.
Best Alexa smart display: Amazon Echo Show 8, 3rd gen
The Amazon Echo Show 8 (3rd gen) is the better choice when a household wants a smart display that also functions as an entertainment and communication device. PCWorld continued to rate it highly in its 2024 roundup.
Unlike the more control-focused Echo Hub, the Echo Show 8 is designed for video streaming, video calls, recipes and ordinary screen-based interaction in addition to smart-home control. PCWorld identified it as a Matter-compatible smart-home hub with Zigbee and Thread-border-router capabilities, along with support for camera feeds.
Choose the Echo Show 8 when the screen will be used for several purposes throughout the day. Choose the Echo Hub when the priority is a dedicated, glanceable dashboard for lights, cameras, thermostats and security devices. Both are most compelling when Alexa is already the household's primary platform.

Best compact Alexa speaker: Amazon Echo Spot (2024)
For a bedroom, office, guest room or other small space, the Amazon Echo Spot (2024) was PCWorld's compact Alexa speaker pick. The roundup listed a reviewed price of $79.99 at the time, but that is a historical 2024 reference rather than a current price.

The Echo Spot makes sense when the main goals are voice control, timers, alarms, routines and basic device control without dedicating wall space to a large display. Its smart-home usefulness is a more important reason to buy it than expecting room-filling, high-fidelity music.
Readers who care more about music quality should compare larger speakers such as the Sonos Era 100 or JBL Authentics 300. Those products are a different type of purchase: the Echo Spot is primarily a compact voice-control endpoint.
Best smart lighting: Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19
Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 bulbs were Android Authority's best smart-bulb choice in its December 2024 roundup. They offer adjustable white light and a broad color range, and the Hue ecosystem works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home.
Hue is a strong choice for a remodel because lighting can be planned by room, scene and use rather than treated as a collection of isolated bulbs. A homeowner might create brighter work lighting in a kitchen, low-level nighttime lighting in hallways and color scenes in an entertainment area.
Budget for the ecosystem, not only the bulb. Some Hue features require a proprietary Hue Bridge, and the Bridge may add to the initial cost. Matter can improve interoperability, but it does not automatically expose every proprietary Hue feature identically in Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home or another platform. Confirm which functions matter to you before deciding whether to use the Bridge, Matter or both.
Best beginner automation: TP-Link Tapo Smart Plug Mini
The TP-Link Tapo Smart Plug Mini two-pack was Android Authority's smart-plug pick, with a cited 2024 MSRP of $29.99. A smart plug is one of the simplest ways to add schedules and remote control to an ordinary lamp or another compatible device.
Its value is practical rather than glamorous: a lamp can turn on at a schedule, a seasonal decoration can be automated, and a device that is safe to disconnect from power can be controlled remotely. Power-management and smart-charging features were among the reasons Android Authority highlighted this model.
Do not treat a small smart plug as a universal controller for appliances. Some high-power devices may not be suitable. Check the plug's electrical rating, the appliance manufacturer's instructions and the installation requirements before connecting anything that draws substantial current. For fixed, high-load or safety-critical equipment, consult a qualified electrician rather than improvising with a consumer plug.

Best thermostat: Google Nest Learning Thermostat, 4th gen
For a Google-centered home with compatible heating and cooling equipment, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) was Android Authority's 2024 thermostat pick. Google's official specifications listed a $279.99 price, Google Home and Matter support, ENERGY STAR certification and a second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor included in the package.
The included sensor can be useful when the temperature near the thermostat does not represent the room occupants care about most. Google ecosystem integration and climate-control features are the main reasons to consider it, rather than Matter alone.
HVAC compatibility must come first. Google lists compatibility with most 24-volt HVAC systems, but that does not mean every heating, cooling or heat-pump configuration is a straightforward replacement. Before purchase, verify the system type, wiring and compatibility information for the exact installation. A thermostat installation may require professional help, particularly when wiring is unfamiliar or the equipment serves a larger or more complex property.
Best Google-centered outdoor camera: Google Nest Cam, 2nd gen
Android Authority selected the Google Nest Cam (2nd gen) as its best outdoor camera in its 2024 guide. The cited strengths included battery operation, three hours of free cloud storage and Google AI features.

Android Authority noted that the weatherproof cable was sold separately. Buyers should also examine what the free storage includes and whether a Nest Aware subscription is practically necessary for the alert history and features they want.
Camera choice is not only a specification contest. Consider whether footage is stored locally or in the cloud, how long recordings are retained, which features require a subscription, how alerts are processed, and whether the installation gives the camera a useful field of view without unnecessarily recording neighboring property or private areas.
Google Nest Doorbell (Battery) for a Google-centered entry
PCWorld separately identified the Google Nest Doorbell (Battery) as particularly strong within Google's ecosystem. Its cited capabilities included on-device image processing, familiar-face recognition, person, animal and vehicle detection, and package alerts.
The battery model is convenient where existing doorbell wiring is absent or difficult to use. A wired installation may be preferable for a frequently used entrance if the specific model and wiring support it. As with the Nest Cam, review storage, subscription, privacy and notification behavior before choosing it solely because it works with Google Home.

Best smart-home router among the 2024 selections: Google Nest Wifi Pro
Android Authority chose Google Nest Wifi Pro as its router recommendation in its 2024 smart-home guide. Its editorial case was straightforward setup, consistent performance, Thread and Matter support, and no required subscription.
That makes it a sensible Google-centered network foundation for households that value simple management and want Thread and Matter capabilities without adding a separate subscription-based service. It should not be described as the fastest or most future-proof router without current comparative testing. Wi-Fi coverage, building materials, floor plan, internet speed and the number of connected devices still determine whether a particular network design works well.

Best advanced robot vacuum: Narwal Freo Z Ultra
Tom's Guide's 2024 awards coverage identified the Narwal Freo Z Ultra as its best robot vacuum. The coverage described automated cleaning, quiet operation, 12,000 Pa suction, self-cleaning and drying, a large dust capacity and AI features.

This is a premium floor-cleaning option for a home designed around automated maintenance. However, those features do not make it objectively best for every floor type or layout. Thresholds, rugs, loose cables, furniture clearance, pet messes and the location of the dock can materially affect the experience. Treat Tom's Guide's award as an editorial assessment, not as a guarantee for every house.
What Matter and Thread actually change
Matter is an application-layer smart-home standard. In practical terms, it is intended to provide a common language for compatible devices so that products from different manufacturers can be set up and controlled more consistently across ecosystems. Apple describes Matter as allowing iOS applications to discover and control Matter devices from multiple manufacturers and ecosystems, while the Connectivity Standards Alliance presents Matter as a common language for smart-home products.
Matter does not mean that every device behaves identically everywhere. A Matter label does not guarantee that Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings and Homey will expose the same settings, automations or manufacturer-specific features. Buyers still need an appropriate Matter controller, and they must confirm that the desired function—not merely basic on and off control—is supported.
Thread is different from Matter. Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology; Matter defines the application messages and device behavior that can operate over it. A Matter-over-Thread product therefore needs access to a Thread network and usually a compatible Thread border router. A Matter controller and a Thread border router may be built into the same product, but they are separate roles.
The standard also changed during 2024. The Connectivity Standards Alliance released Matter 1.3 on May 8, 2024, adding or expanding capabilities for energy reporting, water management, electric-vehicle charging and major appliances. Matter 1.4 followed on November 7, 2024, with improvements involving multi-admin, home-network infrastructure and energy management, along with additional device types including in-wall electrical devices. Those release dates matter when comparing a product's original 2024 support with its later documentation.

Best Value
- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
- Choose the primary ecosystem. Decide whether Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings, Homey or Home Assistant will be the household's main control layer. A secondary platform can be added later, but starting with a clear primary platform reduces duplicate hubs and inconsistent automations.
- Map the jobs, not just the products. List the outcomes needed: entry control, lighting scenes, thermostat scheduling, camera alerts, leak monitoring, energy reporting, media control or floor cleaning. Select the device category that solves each job rather than buying several overlapping controllers.
- Plan network and hub locations. Provide suitable power, reliable Wi-Fi coverage and, where appropriate, wired network connections. Keep hubs and routers accessible for resets and firmware updates. If a panel will be wall-mounted, plan its height, viewing angle, cable route and nearby power before drywall or finished surfaces are installed.
- Verify Matter and Thread roles. For every Matter device, confirm the exact model and supported features. For Matter-over-Thread devices, verify that the intended ecosystem has a compatible Thread border router. Do not assume that any Matter-capable speaker, display or router provides every role needed by every device.
- Check proprietary bridges. Philips Hue is the clearest example in this list: some features require the Hue Bridge. Include the Bridge, its network connection and a suitable location in the design if the full Hue feature set is important.
- Check HVAC before buying a thermostat. Confirm the system type and wiring against the manufacturer's compatibility information. If the installation is unfamiliar or technically complex, arrange qualified installation rather than discovering a mismatch after removing the existing thermostat.
- Check electrical loads before using plugs. Verify the Tapo plug's rating and the appliance's instructions. Smart control should not bypass electrical code, a required disconnect, a safety control or the manufacturer's approved installation method.
- Plan camera privacy and maintenance. Decide where cameras can point, how footage will be stored, who can access it and whether subscriptions are acceptable. Battery cameras also need a charging plan; wired cameras and doorbells need an appropriate cable route and weather-resistant installation.
For a project involving HVAC wiring, mounted displays, cameras, doorbells, in-wall equipment or multiple protocols, smart home installation can be worth budgeting as part of the construction scope. The right installer can coordinate electrical, network, mounting and commissioning work; a specific service provider and price should be verified locally.
How to choose among the 2024 recommendations
Choose Echo Hub if…
- Alexa or Ring is already the main household platform.
- You want a dedicated control screen rather than a general-purpose tablet.
- You value room-based dashboards, camera feeds and quick access to routines.
- You can provide a sensible wall or tabletop location with power and network access.
Choose Homey Pro if…
- Your home contains or will contain Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, infrared, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or 433 MHz products.
- You want one automation layer across brands and are comfortable with configuration.
- Local processing and protocol flexibility justify the additional cost.
Choose a simpler ecosystem-led setup if…
- Google Home is central and you primarily need a thermostat, camera, router and ordinary voice or app control.
- Apple Home is central and compatible lighting or Matter devices are the priority.
- You are starting with only a few devices and do not yet need a dedicated multi-protocol hub.
Important buying cautions
- Prices are historical. The $79.99 Echo Spot reference, $29.99 Tapo two-pack MSRP and $279.99 Nest thermostat specification price came from 2024 coverage or specifications. They may not be current.
- Compatibility is model-specific. Check the exact generation, regional version and current software support. A brand name or Matter logo alone is not enough.
- Advanced features may not cross platforms. Basic control can work through Matter while camera intelligence, lighting scenes, energy tools or other proprietary functions remain dependent on the manufacturer's ecosystem.
- Cameras have ongoing costs and privacy implications. Compare free storage, paid plans, local processing, cloud retention and account access before installation.
- Thermostats require system verification. A smart thermostat is not a universal DIY replacement for every HVAC configuration.
- Smart plugs have electrical limits. Check load ratings and appliance guidance, especially for high-power equipment.
- Performance claims need context. Suction, audio quality, camera intelligence, setup ease, reliability and real-world coverage vary by home. The recommendations here reflect the cited 2024 editorial roundups and official specifications, not first-hand testing by this article's writer.
What was not a good fit for this guide
PC cleanup and optimization software such as Outbyte does not naturally belong in a guide to physical smart-home hardware, ecosystems and building installations. StreamNeo is a service for looping recorded video as a continuous YouTube live stream, not a home-automation device or smart-home service. Neither is recommended here.
