The best single portable detector for investigating suspected sewer gas in a home is a multi-gas meter with a dedicated electrochemical hydrogen-sulfide (H₂S) sensor and a combustible-gas/lower-explosive-limit (LEL) channel. H₂S and methane are different hazards, so a methane-only alarm cannot tell you whether toxic H₂S is present. Do not use the rotten-egg smell as a safety test: odor can disappear even while dangerous H₂S remains.
What “sewer gas” contains and why one sensor is not enough
Sewer gas is a mixture, not a single chemical. Ohio EPA identifies possible components including hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. The exact mixture changes with the source, temperature, ventilation and plumbing conditions.

Hydrogen sulfide is the acute toxic concern. OSHA describes H₂S as “sewer gas”; it is toxic, flammable and heavier than air, so it can collect in low points and enclosed spaces. OSHA’s review of Bureau of Labor Statistics data reported 46 worker deaths involving H₂S between 2011 and 2017. Methane is primarily a fire and explosion hazard. A meter that senses combustible gas can warn about methane’s flammability, but it does not measure H₂S concentration.
Smell is not a dependable warning. H₂S can smell like rotten eggs at low concentrations, but olfactory fatigue or paralysis can remove that odor warning while gas is still present. OSHA states: “DO NOT rely on your sense of smell to indicate the continuing presence of hydrogen sulfide or to warn of harmful levels.”

The best detector format for a house
For a homeowner who needs to investigate a drain, basement, crawlspace entrance or utility area without entering a confined space, choose a portable multi-gas meter that explicitly lists both of these channels:
- Hydrogen-sulfide (H₂S) sensor: normally an electrochemical cell that measures the toxic gas directly.
- Combustible-gas/LEL sensor: a broad-range channel that responds to methane and other flammable hydrocarbons as a class.
An oxygen channel is also common on four-gas instruments and is valuable when an atmosphere may be oxygen-deficient, but oxygen measurement does not replace either H₂S or LEL sensing. Select a unit with audible and visual alarms, a readable display, a documented calibration procedure and available replacement sensors.
Detector types compared
| Detector type | What it detects | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| H₂S-specific meter | Hydrogen sulfide | Checking for the toxic gas directly; OSHA identifies electronic H₂S meters as suitable equipment. | It will not measure methane unless a separate combustible-gas channel is installed. |
| Combustible-gas/LEL meter | Methane and other flammable hydrocarbons as a class | Broad flammability warning when the exact contaminant is unknown; OSHA describes broad-range sensors as useful in that situation. | It does not identify H₂S concentration and may not alarm for toxic H₂S at a low LEL reading. |
| Combined multi-gas meter | H₂S plus combustible gas, often oxygen as well | One instrument covering the two hazards most relevant to a sewer-gas investigation. | Costs more than a single-gas instrument, requires calibration and has model-specific ranges and alarm settings. |
| Detector tubes | A selected gas, shown by a color change | Portable, gas-specific spot sampling when a trained operator needs a concentration estimate. | Each tube is single-use, depends on sampling technique and is not a continuous alarm. |
How the sensors work
Electrochemical H₂S sensing
An electrochemical cell reacts with H₂S and produces an electrical signal proportional to the concentration within the sensor’s working range. OSHA Method 1028 describes an electrochemical H₂S sensor with a 0–200 parts-per-million (ppm) working range and a selective filter. When comparing meters, verify that the specification actually names an electrochemical H₂S sensor; a listing that only says “gas detector” is too vague.
Combustible-gas and LEL sensing
The combustible channel is intended to indicate how close an atmosphere is to the lower explosive limit (LEL) of a flammable gas. It is a class response, not a chemical identification. A reading on this channel cannot be converted into an H₂S reading, and a zero LEL display does not prove that H₂S is absent.

Why a methane alarm is not an H₂S alarm
Single-purpose methane and H₂S detectors are separate products because the gases require different sensing approaches. A consumer “methane detector” can be appropriate for a suspected natural-gas leak, but it is not a substitute for an H₂S sensor when sewer gas is the concern. For the title hazards, use the combined configuration or carry dedicated instruments for each gas.
Buying checklist for a home investigation
Confirm the channels in the specification
- Look for the words H₂S or hydrogen sulfide and combustible gas, LEL or lower explosive limit.
- Check the H₂S range, resolution and alarm set points. A number without units or a stated sensor type is not enough.
- Verify whether the LEL channel is calibrated for methane or another reference gas and read the manufacturer’s cross-sensitivity notes.
Require usable alarms
Prefer a meter with a loud audible alarm, bright visual indicators and a vibration alert if you may work around machinery or wear hearing protection. OSHA sewer-entry guidance specifies alarms for oxygen below 19.5%, flammable gas at 10% LFL or more, and H₂S at or above 10 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted-average reference. Those settings are occupational guidance, not a license to remain in a contaminated home area; follow the instrument maker’s alarm configuration and leave when an alarm occurs.
Check calibration and bump-test support
- Read how often the manufacturer requires calibration and whether a daily or pre-use bump test is specified.
- Confirm that certified, traceable calibration gas, regulators and tubing are available for the exact sensors.
- Check sensor replacement intervals, battery life, ingress protection, operating temperature and the cost and availability of replacement cells.
- Make sure the display records peak readings or alarms if you need to show a plumber or emergency responder what occurred.
Do not choose on a vague product label
“Sewer gas detector,” “toxic gas alarm” or “four-gas capable” can describe very different instruments. A four-gas meter without H₂S, or one with no combustible channel, does not cover this investigation. Read the sensor table, not just the product title.

| OSHA general-industry H₂S ceiling | 20 ppm | Ceiling limit; OSHA allows a limited 50-ppm peak for one 10-minute period only when no other measurable exposure occurs. |
| NIOSH recommended exposure limit | 10 ppm for a 10-minute ceiling | Recommended occupational limit, not a residential clearance level. |
| Immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) | 100 ppm H₂S | OSHA identifies this concentration as IDLH; untrained rescue attempts are prohibited. |
| OSHA sewer-entry alarm reference | 10 ppm H₂S | Used as an 8-hour time-weighted-average reference in sewer guidance. |
| OSHA sewer-entry flammable-gas alarm reference | 10% of the LFL | Alarm point for flammable gas; the exact display depends on the meter’s calibration and gas setting. |
| OSHA oxygen alarm reference | Below 19.5% | Indicates an oxygen-deficient atmosphere in the sewer-entry guidance. |
Readings can change quickly as plumbing traps drain, ventilation changes or a source is disturbed. Do not average a high reading into a reassuring number, and do not assume that a brief zero proves the area is safe.
How to investigate a suspected sewer-gas problem without creating a second hazard
A detector is for information and warning. It is not permission to enter a manhole, tank, crawlspace, pit or other permit-required confined space.
- Move people and ignition sources away. If anyone has symptoms, if a detector alarms, or if a strong odor is accompanied by hissing or a suspected fuel leak, leave the building and call emergency services or the gas utility from outside. Do not operate switches, start engines or create sparks on the way out.
- Read the manual before turning the meter on. Confirm the battery, sensor warm-up sequence, alarm behavior, expiration dates and the correct gas units. Perform the required pre-use inspection.
- Test the instrument. Use a bump test with the manufacturer-approved certified gas when required. If the response is missing, weak or outside the maker’s tolerance, do not use the meter for decisions; calibrate or service it.
- Stay outside enclosed spaces. Sample from a doorway, hatch opening or other safe position using the manufacturer’s probe or tubing. OSHA’s instruction is: “Test (monitor) the air in the space from the outside before entering.” In a home, that means do not put your head or body into a low or enclosed area to obtain a reading.
- Allow the meter to sample long enough. Follow the stated response and stabilization time. Move the probe methodically rather than waving it quickly through the air, and keep yourself upwind where practical.
- Watch all channels. Record H₂S, LEL and oxygen readings, the location, time and whether an alarm occurred. A nonzero H₂S result matters even when LEL is zero, and an LEL alarm matters even when H₂S is zero.
- Stop at an alarm or unsafe trend. Retreat to fresh air, keep others out and call a qualified plumber, industrial-hygiene professional, fire department or emergency service as appropriate. Do not continue sampling to “find the source” from inside the affected area.
Calibration and bump testing: the part that makes readings credible
Gas sensors drift, become poisoned, expire and respond differently as temperature or humidity changes. OSHA’s 2024 guidance on calibrating and testing direct-reading portable gas monitors says the best way to verify accuracy and reliability is to expose the monitor to a known concentration of certified, traceable gas and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.

- Inspect the case, inlet filter, probe, tubing, battery and alarm indicators.
- Check the calibration label or electronic record and the expiration date of the test gas.
- Run the specified bump test. A bump test confirms that the sensors and alarms respond; it is not the same as a full calibration.
When a full calibration is needed
Calibrate at the interval in the manual, after a failed bump test, after sensor replacement, after exposure to a high concentration or contaminant, and whenever the instrument has been dropped or repaired. OSHA recommends using certified traceable gas and, where possible, calibrating under conditions similar to those of use. Do not improvise with an unverified gas mixture or assume that a factory zero is sufficient.

Keep records
Write down the instrument identification, gas lot and expiration date, calibration result, operator and any alarms. Records help a professional distinguish a genuine gas event from a maintenance failure and show when a sensor has reached the end of its service life.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret common results
| Observed result | What it can mean | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| H₂S alarm, LEL at zero | Toxic H₂S is present below the combustible channel’s alarm point. | Leave the area, ventilate only from a safe location and arrange professional assessment. Do not dismiss it because there is no flammability alarm. |
| LEL alarm, H₂S at zero | Methane or another flammable hydrocarbon may be accumulating. | Eliminate ignition sources only if that can be done while leaving, evacuate and call the gas utility or emergency service. |
| Both channels alarm | A mixed sewer atmosphere or another source may be present. | Exit immediately and keep everyone out until qualified responders test and control the atmosphere. |
| Strong odor but both channels read zero | The odor may be from a different compound, the sample may be poorly placed, the sensors may be unsuitable or the meter may need service. | Repeat the check from a safe position after verifying the bump test; have a professional investigate plumbing and the instrument. |
| Intermittent readings | Gas generation, pressure changes, trap failure or ventilation may be causing a changing atmosphere. | Record time and location, keep monitoring from outside and treat any alarm as real. |
Where a home detector stops being appropriate
Manholes, sewer mains, tanks, pits, deep crawlspaces and some utility vaults can be permit-required confined spaces. OSHA sewer guidance calls for trained entrants, continuous or appropriate monitoring, ventilation, audible alarms and a rescue procedure. A homeowner’s portable meter does not provide that training, ventilation, communications or rescue capability.
Never enter to rescue someone who has collapsed. H₂S can overcome a person rapidly, and an untrained rescuer can become the next victim. Call emergency services and tell them that a possible H₂S or sewer-gas atmosphere is involved so they can bring appropriate respiratory protection and monitoring.

- Store the meter clean, dry and within the temperature and humidity limits in its manual.
- Keep the sensor inlet unobstructed; replace filters when contaminated.
- Charge or replace batteries before every planned investigation and carry the specified spare if the manufacturer permits it.
- Do not paint over vents, expose the instrument to solvents or use compressed air in a way the manual prohibits.
- Replace sensors at the stated interval or sooner after repeated high exposure, failed calibration or a persistent fault code.
- Retire the instrument if the maker no longer supports its sensors, firmware, calibration gas or repair process.
Common buying and testing mistakes
Choosing a methane-only alarm for a sewer problem
Methane sensing addresses flammability, not H₂S toxicity. Buy the two-channel configuration when the suspected source is sewer gas.

Trusting the rotten-egg smell
Odor can fade through olfactory fatigue or paralysis. Use an appropriate, maintained instrument and leave whenever conditions are uncertain.
Skipping the bump test
A display that turns on does not prove that gas reaches a functioning sensor. Test with known certified gas as specified by the manufacturer.
Using an uncalibrated consumer gadget as clearance evidence
Many inexpensive devices provide no stated sensor type, calibration method or alarm basis. They may be useful as a preliminary indication only if their specifications are clear; they should not be used to authorize entry or declare a space safe.
Entering to get a better reading
Sampling from outside is the safe boundary. If the probe cannot reach the area, stop and call professionals rather than putting your body into the atmosphere.
A practical choice by situation
| Your situation | Most suitable approach |
|---|---|
| Occasional odor near a floor drain or basement utility area | A maintained portable multi-gas meter with H₂S and LEL channels, used from a safe position, followed by a plumbing inspection. |
| Suspected natural-gas leak with no sewer symptoms | A combustible-gas detector may identify the flammability hazard, but add H₂S sensing if sewer gas remains plausible. |
| Need to document a gas concentration for a contractor | Use an instrument with logged readings, current calibration and documented bump-test results; provide the records to the contractor. |
| Manhole, tank, pit or deep confined space | Do not enter. Call a qualified confined-space team or emergency responders with the required monitoring, ventilation and rescue equipment. |
Bottom line
For a home sewer-gas investigation, select a portable multi-gas meter that names both an electrochemical H₂S sensor and a combustible-gas/LEL sensor, with audible and visual alarms and a documented calibration program. Treat H₂S and methane as separate hazards, never rely on odor, and never use a home detector as permission to enter a confined space. A reading or alarm is a reason to move to fresh air and obtain qualified help, not an invitation to investigate from inside the contaminated area.
