For most renovation and construction work, choose a listed 15A, 120V portable GFCI cord set or in-line unit marked UL 943 Class A, with a weather-resistant housing when it will be used outdoors. Match its plug, receptacle, wire gauge, and load rating to the extension cord and tool. A manual-reset model is usually safer around saws, mixers, pumps, and other equipment that must not restart unexpectedly; automatic reset is appropriate only where unattended restart is acceptable and the manufacturer allows it.
Portable GFCIs add personnel protection to temporary power, but they do not act as circuit breakers and do not automatically replace a permanently installed GFCI where the electrical code requires one. Correct placement, testing, and compliance with the current local code are as important as the product label.

What a portable GFCI does on a job site
A ground-fault circuit interrupter compares the current leaving on the ungrounded conductor with the current returning on the grounded conductor. If some current is escaping through a person, wet surface, damaged insulation, or another unintended path, the device opens the circuit quickly enough to reduce shock risk. The portable version puts that protection in a cord set, plug head, or in-line module instead of relying solely on a receptacle installed in a building.

It can protect the cord and tool downstream of the device when the unit is connected correctly. It cannot protect the section of cord between the power source and a GFCI placed at the far end, so putting the unit near the source is normally the safer arrangement.

A portable GFCI is not an overcurrent protective device. It will not replace a fuse or circuit breaker for overloads and short circuits, and it does not make an undersized extension cord safe. The supply circuit still needs the correct overcurrent protection, grounding, conductor size, and rating for the connected load.
The portable GFCI formats worth considering
| Format | What it is | Best use | Limit to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plug-head GFCI | A compact protective module built into or immediately behind the plug. | Short cords, hand tools, and situations where a small device must travel with the tool. | Limited space for multiple connections; verify that the outlet and cord will not place mechanical stress on the module. |
| In-line module | A separate GFCI housing installed along a short cord with a plug and receptacle. | One portable tool or an extension cord where a visible TEST and RESET location is useful. | The module only protects equipment downstream from it; its marked amperage, voltage, and connector pattern must match the circuit. |
| Cord set with receptacle | A complete cable assembly with a GFCI module and a receptacle at the load end. | General renovation work, where the assembly can be placed close to the temporary power source. | Length, conductor gauge, jacket type, and receptacle configuration determine where it can be used. |
| Industrial portable assembly | A heavy-duty, configurable cable assembly with industrial connectors and specified amperage. | Contractors using temporary maintenance power, generators, pumps, or equipment with twist-lock or higher-current connections. | It may require a matching distribution system and qualified electrical planning; do not adapt connectors to force compatibility. |
For a normal 120-volt tool circuit, a 15A/120V assembly is the common starting point. A 20A, 30A, 240V, or twist-lock device is appropriate only when the source circuit, connector, conductors, and equipment are all rated for it.
Documented portable GFCI devices and assemblies
The following examples are configurations documented by their manufacturers. They are not an independently tested ranking. Availability, connector options, and revisions can change, so verify the current marking on the product before purchase.
| Device or family | Documented specifications | Reset and construction | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leviton GFA15-37E | 15A, 120V cord set; 37-foot length; 14/3 SJTW cable; 5 mA ± 1 mA trip level in the technical specification. | Automatic reset; rainproof module; open-neutral protection; UL 943 Class A certification. | A long, outdoor-capable cord set for renovation areas where the length and 15A rating match the tool and source. |
| Legrand/Pass & Seymour 1597PC2A | 15A portable in-line unit with a 2-foot cord. | Self-test, automatic reset. | Short-run protection for a portable tool when automatic restoration is acceptable. |
| Legrand/Pass & Seymour 2097PC2M | 20A portable in-line unit with a 2-foot cord. | Manual reset. | Applications that require a 20A configuration and deliberate re-energizing after a trip. |
| Hubbell Circuit Guard GFPST6C15x | 15A/120V portable GFCI line cord. | Portable line-cord format; consult the current product sheet for the exact reset and cord options. | General temporary power where a 15A/120V line cord is compatible with the source and load. |
| Hubbell portable range | 15A and 20A line cords, plugs, and modules are listed in the product family. | Configuration depends on the selected part. | Useful when a contractor needs a particular plug, receptacle, or cable arrangement rather than a standard cord set. |
| Eaton Crouse-Hinds portable assemblies | Industrial assemblies configurable by amperage, cable length, and connector family. | UL/cUL 943-listed configurations are available. | Temporary maintenance power and industrial work requiring higher-duty cable or specialized connectors. |
Legrand describes its portable line as a code-compliant solution for NEC and OSHA requirements. That statement is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent field test or a determination that every configuration satisfies every local job-site rule.
How to choose the right rating and connector
Start with the branch circuit
Read the source receptacle and circuit information before choosing the GFCI. A 15A device belongs on a compatible 15A/120V application. A 20A device needs a properly rated 20A circuit and matching NEMA configuration; a 20A label alone does not make a 15A extension cord or receptacle suitable. Higher-current and 240V assemblies require the same discipline across the source, conductors, connectors, GFCI, and tool.
Match the tool’s running and starting load
Check the tool nameplate and the extension-cord ampacity. Motors, compressors, pumps, and dust extractors can draw a starting surge, so avoid a device or cord that is already at its marked limit. If several tools will share a temporary distribution point, calculate the expected simultaneous load rather than adding nameplate ratings casually.

Match the NEMA pattern and grounding arrangement
The plug and receptacle must physically and electrically match the circuit. Never defeat the grounding pin, use an unlisted adapter to change a configuration, or connect a 20A device to a receptacle that is not rated for it. A portable GFCI does not correct reversed wiring, an absent equipment grounding conductor, or a damaged receptacle.

Choose enough cord without creating a hazard
A longer cord can keep the protective module near the source while reaching the work area, but excess cable should be laid out rather than coiled under load. Confirm conductor size and jacket designation. The documented Leviton example uses 14/3 SJTW cable; SJTW is a flexible, thermoplastic, weather-resistant cord designation commonly selected for exposed temporary work, but the marking on the actual cord controls.
Manual reset versus automatic reset
Why manual reset is usually preferred for tools
After a ground-fault trip or power interruption, a manual-reset unit remains off until someone presses RESET. That behavior prevents a saw, mixer, pump, or other machine from unexpectedly restarting while a worker is clearing a jam, changing a blade, or investigating wet conditions. It also makes a trip visible: the person returning to the work area must intentionally restore power.
When automatic reset can make sense
An automatic-reset unit restores power after an interruption or when its self-test sequence permits it. This can be useful for equipment that is designed to resume operation and is attended in a way that makes restart acceptable. It is not a universal convenience feature: an automatic unit should be used only when the manufacturer’s instructions, the equipment design, and the site risk assessment allow unexpected re-energizing.
Automatic reset does not mean the GFCI is less sensitive, and manual reset does not make an incorrectly wired circuit safe. The distinction is what happens after the protective interruption, not whether the device detects a ground fault.
Outdoor and wet-location requirements
For exposed renovation work, choose a housing identified as weather-resistant or rainproof and a cord with an outdoor-rated jacket. Keep every connection out of standing water, protect the module from direct impact, and route the cord where vehicles, ladders, sharp edges, and doorways cannot crush it. Weather resistance is not permission to submerge a device or leave a connector lying in a puddle.

Inspect the cap, strain relief, cord jacket, plug blades, and receptacle before each shift. Cracks, flattened sections, exposed conductors, loose blades, discoloration, or a cover that no longer closes are reasons to remove the assembly from service. Do not wrap damaged insulation with tape and return the cord to a wet location.
What the electrical code requires—and what a portable unit does not prove
Hubbell’s portable-GFCI documentation quotes NEC 590.6(A): “All 125-volt, single-phase, 15-, 20-, and 30-ampere receptacle outlets that are not a part of the permanent wiring of the building or structure and that are in use by personnel shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.” The applicable NEC edition, state or provincial amendments, and local authority having jurisdiction determine how that rule is enforced on a particular project.
A listed portable GFCI can provide the required personnel protection for a temporary outlet when it is installed and used within its rating. It does not automatically satisfy every job-site requirement. A project may still require a permanently installed GFCI, a specific assured-equipment-grounding program, documented inspections, weather protection, or a particular industrial assembly. Ask the electrical inspector, general contractor, or safety officer which code edition and site rules apply before treating a portable unit as the complete compliance solution.

Leviton’s bulletin also states that the UL 943 requirement calls for self-test GFCIs. Look for the complete listing mark and the manufacturer’s instructions, not merely a product description that uses the words “GFCI” or “ground fault.”
Placement: protect the cord and tool, not just the person at the end
Connect the portable GFCI as close to the power source as practical, then connect the extension cord and tool downstream. This arrangement protects the longest possible section of temporary wiring. A GFCI at the tool end can interrupt a fault in the tool or downstream cord, but it cannot sense a fault on the upstream section between the source and the device.
Keep the TEST and RESET controls visible and accessible. Do not bury the module under insulation, inside a closed box, or behind stacked materials. If a generator, temporary panel, or distribution box already has GFCI protection, a second portable unit may still be used when required by the equipment instructions or site plan; expect possible nuisance trips and investigate the cause rather than bypassing either device.

Setup and operating procedure
- Confirm the source. Identify the voltage, amperage, receptacle pattern, grounding, and overcurrent protection. Stop if the receptacle is damaged, wet, hot, loose, or incorrectly wired.
- Inspect the GFCI and cord. Check the housing, cable jacket, strain relief, plug, receptacle, TEST and RESET buttons, and listing marks. Verify that the cord gauge, length, and outdoor rating suit the work.
- Place the unit near the source. Set it where the controls remain visible and the housing is protected from impact and standing water.
- Connect without an attached load first. Plug the GFCI into the source, then press RESET if the instructions require it. The indicator should show the normal energized state specified by the manufacturer.
- Run the self-test. Press TEST. Power to the downstream receptacle should stop. Press RESET to restore power. If the unit does not trip, will not reset, or behaves differently from its instructions, remove it from service.
- Connect the extension cord and tool. Make sure the plug is fully seated, the equipment switch is off, and the cord is routed away from water, traffic, heat, and cutting edges.
- Monitor during work. Stop immediately after a trip. Unplug the tool, inspect for moisture or damage, and reset only after the cause is corrected.
- Test again after relocation or a power event. Moving a cord to a different source or experiencing generator interruption can change conditions; repeat the manufacturer’s test procedure before resuming.
Troubleshooting a trip or failed test
The GFCI trips immediately with nothing connected
Unplug the downstream cord and reset once. If it still trips, the source may have a wiring or neutral problem, the device may be wet or damaged, or the GFCI may have detected an internal fault. Do not repeatedly cycle RESET. Tag the assembly out of service and have the source and device checked by a qualified person.
It trips only when a particular tool is connected
Leave the tool disconnected and inspect its cord, plug, switch, motor, and enclosure for moisture or damage. Try no substitute tool until the suspect equipment has been evaluated. A GFCI trip is a warning, not evidence that the protective device is defective.
It will not reset after a power interruption
Automatic-reset and manual-reset models behave differently. Confirm that the source is energized, the upstream breaker is on, and the device is dry. On a manual-reset model, press RESET only after the load is disconnected and the area is safe. If the manufacturer’s reset sequence does not restore operation, replace or service the unit rather than bypassing it.
The TEST button does not remove power
Stop using the device immediately. A failed test means the portable assembly cannot be relied on for personnel protection. Remove it from service, label it, and follow the manufacturer’s replacement or inspection procedure.
Which type fits common work situations?
General indoor renovation
A 15A/120V listed in-line unit or cord set is usually sufficient for one compatible hand tool. Manual reset is preferable when the tool could move or cut material if power returns unexpectedly. Keep the module accessible rather than placing it behind temporary walls or flooring.

Use a rainproof or weather-resistant housing and an outdoor-rated flexible cord. The 37-foot Leviton GFA15-37E configuration illustrates the kind of complete assembly to evaluate when reach and weather exposure matter: 15A/120V capacity, 14/3 SJTW cord, open-neutral protection, and UL 943 Class A marking. Its automatic-reset behavior still needs to be acceptable for the connected equipment.

Industrial maintenance or higher-current equipment
Select an industrial assembly whose amperage, cable length, and connector family are specified for the equipment. Eaton Crouse-Hinds assemblies offer configurable options in those categories and carry UL/cUL 943-listed configurations. The correct choice depends on the temporary distribution design; do not substitute a household 15A cord set for a higher-duty connector system.
Multiple crews sharing temporary power
Use a documented temporary-power plan that identifies each branch, cord, GFCI, and connected load. A portable device at each work area may be convenient, but protection still needs to be coordinated with any GFCI devices at the generator, panel, or distribution box. Keep inspection records if the site’s safety program requires them.
Buying checklist
- UL 943 Class A or the applicable recognized listing mark is present on the device.
- Voltage and amperage match the source circuit and tool.
- Plug and receptacle use the correct NEMA pattern and grounding configuration.
- Manual or automatic reset behavior suits the hazard and operating plan.
- Housing is rainproof or weather-resistant when exposed to the elements.
- Cord jacket, conductor gauge, and length are suitable for the environment and load.
- Self-test controls are accessible, and the instructions explain normal indicator behavior.
- Open-neutral or equivalent protective features are included when required by the product specification.
- The physical assembly has no cracks, cuts, loose blades, bent pins, or damaged strain relief.
- The current code edition and authority-having-jurisdiction requirements have been checked for the project.
Maintenance, storage, and replacement
Perform the manufacturer’s TEST procedure at the interval specified in its instructions and whenever the unit is moved to a new supply. Keep the housing clean and dry, coil the cord without tight kinks, and store it away from direct sunlight, solvents, and freezing or excessive heat that the product instructions prohibit.
Portable GFCIs are safety devices, not permanent repairs for a failing tool or temporary wiring system. Replace an assembly after a failed self-test, visible damage, repeated unexplained trips, contamination that cannot be cleaned safely, or uncertainty about its history. Never open, modify, defeat, or splice the protective module in the field.
Bottom-line selection
Choose a listed 15A/120V portable GFCI cord set or in-line device for ordinary contractor and DIY renovation tools, add weather-resistant construction for outdoor use, and place it near the source so the downstream cord and tool are protected. Select manual reset when unexpected restart could injure someone; select automatic reset only for equipment and procedures that explicitly tolerate restoration. Move to a 20A or industrial assembly only when every part of the temporary-power system is rated for that configuration, and confirm the local code and site safety rules before relying on the portable unit for compliance.
