Best Outdoor TV for Your Backyard or Patio: 5 Picks by Sun Exposure

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For direct sunlight, choose Samsung The Terrace Full Sun. For a covered or fully shaded patio, choose SunBriteTV Veranda 4. For a lower-cost purpose-built option, compare the exact Sylvox Deck Pro 3.0 configuration. The decisive factor is the TV’s sunlight category: full shade, partial sun, or full sun. Weather resistance alone does not make a television suitable for direct rays or permanent outdoor installation.

Choose by sunlight before choosing by brand. For an uncovered patio or pool deck where direct rays will hit the screen, the best category-specific pick is Samsung The Terrace Full Sun. For a roofed, screened, or deeply shaded patio, SunBriteTV Veranda 4 is the better fit. If the priority is a lower purchase price while still buying a purpose-built outdoor set, consider the Sylvox Deck Pro 3.0—but verify the exact size and sun-exposure variant.

That recommendation is based on manufacturer specifications and installation constraints, not a controlled, independent picture or durability test. No outdoor TV is completely waterproof, immune to heat, or safe to submerge. Even a model marketed for full sun needs correct placement, ventilation, protected power, and a mount suitable for the structure.

Disclosure: This guide may contain commercial product links. Verify the exact model number, price, stock, warranty, weight, VESA pattern, and sunlight rating before buying.

The quick recommendation

Best for Recommended family Why it fits Important limitation
Direct sunlight or an exposed patio Samsung The Terrace Full Sun Samsung’s direct-sun category combines anti-reflection treatment, direct-sun protection, outdoor-optimized 4K processing, and IP55/IP56 protection depending on the model or component. It still needs careful placement. Samsung’s installation guidance warns against prolonged direct sunlight and says the TV must not be submerged.
Covered or fully shaded patio SunBriteTV Veranda 4 600-nit sustained full-screen brightness, anti-glare QWP screen, 4K HDR10, webOS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, IP55 weatherproofing, and a two-year parts-and-labor warranty. It is a full-shade television, not the right choice where direct sun regularly strikes the panel.
Lower-cost purpose-built outdoor TV Sylvox Deck Pro 3.0 A weatherproof 4K outdoor-TV family with multiple sizes and configurations. Brightness, weather rating, temperature range, and other specifications vary by exact configuration. Do not generalize from one size to the whole family.
SunBrite full-sun performance SunBriteTV Solis SunBrite classifies the Solis family as full sun and lists 1,500 nits of sustained full-screen brightness with webOS. Confirm the current model number, size, and availability; the comparison information is family-level.
Full sun without smart-TV software SunBriteTV Pro 2 SunBrite classifies Pro 2 as full sun and lists 1,000 to 1,500 nits depending on model. The family is listed as non-smart, and exact specifications vary by model.

First decide: full shade, partial sun, or full sun?

The sunlight category is an installation requirement, not a marketing detail. A weather-resistant television can still be difficult to see, overheat, or suffer excessive solar load if it is installed in the wrong light conditions.

Full shade

Full-shade models are intended for locations where direct sunlight does not hit the screen: a covered patio, screened porch, gazebo, pergola with adequate shade, or area beneath a deep overhang. Ambient daylight can still be bright, but the panel is not expected to fight direct rays.

The SunBriteTV Veranda 4 is the clearest match here. Its 600-nit rating is specified as sustained full-screen brightness, rather than an unspecified peak figure. It also has an anti-glare QWP screen, RGB-W technology, 4K resolution at 60 Hz, HDR10, webOS smart-TV software, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an IP55 weatherproof enclosure, and a weatherproof remote. SunBrite lists 49-, 55-, 65-, and 75-inch versions on the product page reviewed.

Partial sun

Partial-sun models are designed for brighter outdoor conditions but generally still benefit from a roof, overhang, or a layout that keeps direct rays off the panel during the main viewing period. This category can work well on a patio with a canopy that shades the TV but not every seat.

Do not treat partial sun as interchangeable with full sun. Before buying, watch the proposed mounting location through the hours when the TV will be used. A screen that is shaded at noon may be hit by low-angle morning or evening sunlight.

Full sun

Full-sun models are the appropriate category when direct sunlight is unavoidable. They typically combine higher sustained brightness with anti-reflection treatment and additional design attention to solar exposure.

Samsung The Terrace Full Sun is the best overall choice for this use case. Samsung distinguishes its Full Sun and Partial Sun versions, and the Full Sun line is marketed for direct-sun environments. The reviewed U.S. product page listed 65-inch and 75-inch configurations. Relevant features include direct-sun protection, anti-reflection technology, outdoor-optimized 4K picture processing, and IP55/IP56 protection depending on the exact model and component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important qualification: Samsung’s general support guidance cautions against prolonged direct sunlight and emphasizes proper installation. That does not make the Full Sun category meaningless; it means “full sun” should be read as the correct product category for unavoidable exposure, not as permission to install the set in an extreme solar-heat location without regard to ventilation, surrounding surfaces, or the manufacturer’s clearances.

Outdoor TV comparison

The figures below are not directly interchangeable. In particular, SunBrite’s cited brightness figures are sustained full-screen ratings. Other manufacturers may publish different measurement methods or emphasize peak brightness.

Why Samsung The Terrace Full Sun is the best choice for direct exposure

Direct sunlight creates two separate problems: reflections reduce contrast, and solar heat increases the thermal load on the television. Samsung’s Full Sun design addresses both more directly than a full-shade set. Its anti-reflection treatment helps reduce reflected sky, furniture, and surrounding surfaces, while the direct-sun positioning and outdoor 4K processing are intended for brighter environments.

It is the strongest choice for an exposed seating area, pool deck, or backyard wall where moving the TV into shade is not realistic. The trade-off is cost: this is a premium outdoor-TV line, and the exact U.S. price and inventory should be checked on the current listing rather than copied from an older page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Placement still matters. Avoid a location that traps heat behind the set, follow Samsung’s clearance and mounting instructions, and do not place the TV where water can pool or where the unit could be submerged. Samsung specifically warns that the TV, remote control, and power cord must not be submerged.

Why SunBrite Veranda 4 is better for a covered patio

A full-sun model can be unnecessary under a roof, while a purpose-built full-shade model may provide the right balance of brightness, weather protection, smart features, and price. The Veranda 4 is designed for that environment rather than for direct rays.

Its 600-nit sustained full-screen rating is useful because outdoor scenes often contain large bright areas, and a sustained rating is more informative for this purpose than an unexplained peak number. The anti-glare QWP screen can also matter as much as brightness when the panel faces a bright garden, patio floor, or open sky.

The Veranda 4 has powder-coated aluminum construction, IP55 weatherproofing, an operating-temperature specification of 32°F to 122°F, and a two-year parts-and-labor warranty. It includes two 8-watt internal speakers and an amplifier for an optional SunBrite all-weather soundbar. The optional dust cover is sold separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those specifications make it a strong covered-patio outdoor TV, but not a full-sun recommendation. If direct afternoon sunlight reaches the screen for hours, move up to a full-sun family instead.

When Sylvox Deck Pro 3.0 makes sense

The Sylvox Deck Pro 3.0 is worth considering when you want a purpose-built weatherproof outdoor television without automatically moving to the premium Samsung or SunBrite lines. Sylvox currently markets the family as a weatherproof, ultra-bright 4K outdoor TV.

  • Outdoor Sound Quality: Designed for outdoor entertainment, the Patio Series Outdoor TV comes with dual 10W waterproof speakers for clear, powerful sound. Whether for backyard gatherings or daily viewing, enjoy a premium audio experience that elevates your outdoor fun.

The critical buying step is selecting the exact variant. The Deck Pro 3.0 name covers multiple sizes and configurations, so its brightness, IP rating, operating-temperature range, smart features, and warranty should be treated as model-specific. A reviewed 75-inch product page advertised 4K resolution and a complimentary one-year warranty from Sylvox, but that should not be presented as the warranty for every size.

Match the individual product page to your sunlight conditions. A partial-sun or full-sun version may be appropriate for a bright patio, while a shaded installation should be judged on its exact brightness, weather rating, mounting pattern, and warranty rather than on the family name alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other strong options: SunBrite Solis and Pro 2

SunBrite’s own comparison guide puts the Solis and Pro families in the brighter full-sun portion of its range. The Solis is listed at 1,500 nits of sustained full-screen brightness and includes webOS smart-TV functionality. The Pro 2 is listed as full sun at 1,000 to 1,500 nits depending on model, but as non-smart.

Choose Solis if integrated smart-TV software is important. Choose Pro 2 if you already plan to use an external streaming device or a whole-home AV system and prefer a non-smart commercial-style display. Because these are family-level comparisons, check the exact model number, current size range, input selection, warranty, and availability before ordering.

How big should an outdoor TV be?

Start with the seating distance, viewing angle, and mounting structure rather than choosing the largest screen. A screen that is too large for a close patio seat can be uncomfortable, while a small screen at the far side of a yard may lose detail and subtitles.

  • 49 or 55 inches: Usually easier to place on a covered patio or screened porch and suitable for a compact seating area.
  • 65 inches: A practical middle ground for a larger patio seating group and a common size for a dedicated outdoor wall.
  • 75 inches or larger: Better suited to long viewing distances, large seating layouts, or an outdoor-theater arrangement, but it adds weight, structural, shipping, and installation demands.

These are starting points, not a universal formula. Content type, eyesight, seating layout, and whether viewers watch from an angle all change the right answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the VESA pattern and weight before buying the mount. For example, SunBrite’s Veranda 4 data sheet lists a 200×200 VESA pattern for the 49-inch model and 400×400 for the larger models. Never assume that a mount that fits one size in a product family fits another.

Outdoor TV installation checklist

  1. Map the sun. Observe the proposed wall during the hours the TV will be used. Note direct rays, low-angle glare, reflected light, and whether a roof or overhang actually shades the panel.
  2. Select the exposure category. Use full shade for a genuinely shaded location, partial sun for bright but mostly protected locations, and full sun when direct rays cannot be avoided.
  3. Confirm the exact model. Record the model number, sunlight category, IP rating, operating-temperature limits, warranty, dimensions, weight, input layout, and included remote. Family names are not enough.
  4. Check the structure. Use a mount rated for the TV’s total weight and VESA pattern. Confirm that the wall, masonry, framing, or other supporting structure and its anchors are appropriate for the installation. Outdoor mounting can also increase exposure to wind and vibration.
  5. Plan power before mounting. In U.S. dwelling installations, outdoor receptacles supplied by qualifying circuits generally require GFCI protection under applicable NEC provisions, including the requirements explained for NEC 210.8(F). Local jurisdictions can adopt amendments or exceptions. Use a licensed electrician when new wiring, an exterior circuit, or code questions are involved.
  6. Protect the connection points. Keep plugs, cable connections, and water paths arranged so rain cannot track into the receptacle or equipment. An appropriate weatherproof outdoor outlet cover, such as an extra-duty while-in-use cover, may be relevant, but the product must match the receptacle, box, cord, and local code.
  7. Respect temperature and ventilation limits. Follow the manufacturer’s clearances and operating range. Do not seal the TV into a cabinet or create a heat trap behind it unless the manufacturer specifically permits that installation.
  8. Decide how to handle network and source equipment. Protect HDMI, Ethernet, streaming boxes, and power adapters from the same moisture and heat exposure as the TV. A smart-TV platform does not eliminate the need to plan reliable Wi-Fi or protected wired connections.
  9. Install audio separately if needed. Test the listening area, not just the TV location. Wind, conversation, and distance can overwhelm built-in speakers.

A permanent installation is more than moving an indoor television outdoors. If the project involves new electrical work, uncertain framing or masonry, a large screen, or an integrated audio system, arrange professional outdoor TV installation or an outdoor AV consultation. A professional should still follow the TV and mount manufacturers’ instructions and local electrical requirements.

Power and weather safety

Outdoor-rated does not mean submersible. IP55, IP56, or a manufacturer’s word such as “weatherproof” describes a defined level of environmental protection for a particular product; it does not authorize immersion, pressure washing, water pooling, or careless cable routing.

Use the manufacturer’s power cord and installation instructions. Keep the set away from standing water, do not operate it with damaged cables, and do not rely on an indoor extension cord as a permanent outdoor wiring solution. For U.S. homes, have an electrician verify GFCI protection, grounding, box location, weather-resistant devices, and local code compliance.

Where the TV will sit unused for long periods, a model-specific outdoor TV dust cover can add protection from dust and debris. It does not turn an indoor TV into an outdoor TV, and it should not be fitted while the set is hot or wet. Confirm that the cover is compatible with the exact installed model and that the manufacturer’s ventilation and care instructions permit its use.

Brightness, glare, and viewing angle

Nits are only one part of outdoor visibility. The sun’s direction, screen coating, contrast, panel heat, viewing angle, and reflections from nearby surfaces can matter just as much.

  • Prioritize anti-reflection or anti-glare treatment when the screen faces open sky or reflective hardscape.
  • Angle the television to reduce direct reflections, but do not create an awkward viewing angle for the main seating area.
  • Do not compare 600 nits, 1,000 nits, and 1,500 nits as though every brand measured them identically. Confirm whether the number is sustained full-screen, peak, or a manufacturer estimate.
  • Keep heat and airflow in mind. A brighter screen in direct sun can still be a poor installation if the surrounding wall or enclosure traps heat.

Samsung’s Full Sun models emphasize anti-reflection and direct-sun protection. SunBrite lists anti-glare treatment and 600-nit sustained full-screen brightness for Veranda 4, while its comparison guide lists 1,500 nits for Solis and 1,000 to 1,500 nits for Pro 2 depending on model. These figures support category selection, not a claim that one brand has the best picture without independent testing.

Sound and streaming outdoors

Built-in speakers can be adequate for casual viewing in a quiet, covered patio. They may be insufficient when the TV is far from the seats or competing with wind, conversation, a pool pump, or outdoor activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Veranda 4 includes two 8-watt speakers and an amplifier for an optional SunBrite all-weather soundbar. Samsung promotes a matching Terrace Soundbar. These are sensible outdoor-audio options documented by the manufacturers, but no independent sound test was performed for this guide, so neither should be described as objectively superior.

If you add a soundbar or outdoor speakers, plan their mounting, cable routing, power, and weather exposure at the same time as the TV. A protected TV paired with an unsuitable indoor audio component is still a vulnerable outdoor installation.

Should you use an ordinary indoor TV outside?

Not as a permanent installation. Indoor TVs generally are not designed for the combination of rain, humidity, dust, insects, corrosion, temperature changes, and solar loading found outdoors. They may also lack the brightness and anti-glare treatment needed for daylight viewing.

An indoor set can make sense only for temporary use in a genuinely protected location when it is brought back inside after use and kept away from moisture, condensation, heat, and direct sunlight. A dust cover alone does not provide outdoor weather sealing.

A final buying decision

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a full-sun outdoor TV be installed in direct sunlight?

A full-sun outdoor TV is the appropriate category when direct sunlight will hit the screen, but it still needs proper ventilation, clearances, protected power, and careful placement. It is not immune to extreme solar heat and must not be submerged.

Can I use a regular indoor TV on my patio?

Not as a permanent installation. Indoor TVs generally lack outdoor weather sealing, temperature tolerance, corrosion resistance, and daylight brightness. A temporary indoor-TV setup should be brought inside after use and kept away from moisture and direct sun.

How bright should an outdoor TV be?

The 600-nit figure published for SunBrite Veranda 4 is a sustained full-screen rating. SunBrite’s comparison guide lists 1,500 sustained full-screen nits for Solis and 1,000 to 1,500 nits for Pro 2, depending on model. Brightness figures from different brands should not be compared without confirming how each was measured.

Do I need a special outlet for an outdoor TV?

A weather-resistant or extra-duty while-in-use cover can protect an outdoor receptacle from weather while equipment is plugged in, but it does not guarantee code compliance. Outdoor electrical work should follow local requirements, and new wiring or circuit work may require a licensed electrician.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The best outdoor TV depends primarily on the sun, not the screen size. Choose Samsung The Terrace Full Sun for direct exposure, SunBriteTV Veranda 4 for a covered patio, and Sylvox Deck Pro 3.0 as a lower-cost purpose-built alternative after confirming the exact variant. Use a correctly rated mount, GFCI-protected outdoor power, protected cable connections, and manufacturer-approved clearances.
