Best Multicolor 3D Printers of 2025: Print the Rainbow

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best multicolor 3D printer depends on how it changes materials. For most beginners, families, classrooms, and hobbyists, the Bambu Lab A1 Combo is the best starting point. The Bambu Lab P1S Combo is the better enclosed option; Anycubic’s Kobra 3 Combo and Flashforge’s AD5X are value-oriented filament-changing alternatives; Snapmaker’s U1 is the low-waste toolchanger pick; and the Original Prusa XL 5-Toolhead is the premium large-format choice.

Single-nozzle systems are usually more compact and simpler to buy, but they purge material during color changes. Toolchanger systems keep separate materials on separate toolheads, which can reduce purge waste and improve multimaterial workflows at the cost of more hardware, space, and expense.

Short answer: For most first-time buyers, the Bambu Lab A1 Combo 3D printer is the most approachable route to multicolor FDM printing. Choose the Bambu Lab P1S Combo if you specifically want an enclosed Bambu Lab setup; the Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo or Flashforge AD5X if color capacity and value matter most; the Snapmaker U1 if reducing purge waste is a priority; and the Original Prusa XL 5-Toolhead if you need a large-format, premium toolchanger for serious multimaterial work.

There is no single best multicolor 3D printer. The important decision is architectural: most printers automatically swap filament through one nozzle, while toolchanger models keep separate materials on separate toolheads. The first group is generally easier to package and less expensive; the second can make material changes cleaner and reduce purge waste, but normally requires more hardware, space, and budget.

This is a sensible fit for first-time makers, families, classrooms, and hobbyists printing color-coded signs, models, figurines, labels, or small construction mockups. Its open design is also easier to place where a full enclosure is inconvenient, although an open printer is not the right choice for every material or workspace.

  • Why choose it: straightforward entry into multicolor printing, automatic calibration features, and a useful 256 mm cubed build volume.
  • What to watch: it uses a filament-changing system, so color swaps can create purge waste and additional print time.
  • Do not assume: the A1 and A1 Combo are interchangeable listings.

2. Bambu Lab P1S Combo: best enclosed option

The Bambu Lab P1S Combo is the strongest choice in this group for readers who specifically want an enclosed Bambu Lab workflow. The official Combo listing identified in the research includes the P1S, AMS 2 Pro, AMS Hub, and associated cabling and tubing. Because storefront packages can change, verify those inclusions on the listing you are considering rather than assuming every P1S package is a complete multicolor bundle.

An enclosure can make the printer easier to separate from a dusty workshop environment and can be useful when the buyer wants a more contained machine. It also changes the footprint, ventilation, access, and material considerations. The P1S Combo is therefore a different kind of recommendation from the open A1 Combo, not simply a faster or larger version of the same purchase.

Bambu Lab’s AMS documentation describes multicolor and multimaterial capability along with filament management, drying, runout detection, and winding detection. Those features address practical problems that appear when several spools feed one printer, but the AMS does not eliminate the purge behavior inherent in changing filament through a shared nozzle.

  • Why choose it: enclosed construction and a complete-looking Combo workflow built around the P1S and AMS system.
  • What to watch: confirm the exact AMS version, hub, cables, tubing, warranty, and seller; do not use a temporary storefront price as a permanent value judgment.
  • Best buyer: someone who wants the Bambu Lab ecosystem and specifically prefers an enclosed printer.

3. Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo: best budget-oriented color alternative

Anycubic positions the Kobra 3 Combo around multicolor printing, filament management, and high headline speed. The manufacturer lists support for four or eight colors, a 250 × 250 × 260 mm build volume, a stated maximum speed of 600 mm/s, and ACE Pro filament drying while printing.

The Kobra 3 Combo is a strong value-oriented candidate for a buyer who cares about color capacity and wants an integrated material-management system. However, value here is an editorial category, not a promise that it will always have the lowest price. Promotions, bundles, inventory, and regional pricing change.

Material qualifications matter. The product information lists PLA, PETG, and TPU support, while also stating that TPU is not compatible with ACE Pro. That means a buyer should not read the color-system specification as proof that every listed material can be routed through every part of the system. Check the current compatibility table for the exact printer, ACE Pro configuration, spool, nozzle, and material.

  • Why choose it: four- or eight-color configurations, a 250 × 250 × 260 mm volume, and integrated drying features in the ACE Pro system.
  • What to watch: 600 mm/s is a manufacturer maximum, not a typical multicolor print speed; verify whether the package is four-color or eight-color and how the additional colors are achieved.
  • Best buyer: a value-focused user who wants more color capacity than a basic four-spool setup may provide.

4. Flashforge AD5X: best compact four-color alternative

The Flashforge AD5X is a useful alternative for buyers who want a compact four-color printer without moving to a large toolchanger. Flashforge describes it as supporting four colors with automatic filament loading, a 220 × 220 × 220 mm build volume, and a stated maximum speed of 600 mm/s.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

  • Up to 16 Colors: Bring your designs to life with vibrant multi-color/multi-material printing capabilities, perfect for showcasing your creativity. Note: Connecting Bambu Lab AMS is required.
  • 500mm/s and 20000 mm/s² Acceleration True High Speed: Don't wait around for your masterpieces. Lightning-fast printing speed lets you focus on creating, not waiting.
  • Enclosed Design: Fully enclosed body improves print performance for advanced filaments. Automatic Bed Leveling: Say hello to high-quality, successful prints. Auto bed leveling makes 3D printing such an easy thing.
  • Set Up in 15 Minutes: Spend more time printing and less time setting up. User-friendly design ensures a hassle-free assembly experience for all skill levels.
  • Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.

Flashforge’s documentation also explains the IFS configuration and the color-painting workflow used to prepare multicolor jobs. That workflow distinction matters: the printer is selecting among loaded filaments, not mixing arbitrary colors like an ink printer. The final design still needs clearly assigned color regions and compatible slicing instructions.

Keep the model distinction explicit when shopping. Flashforge says the AD5X IFS system is not compatible with older AD5M or AD5MP models. An older printer listing may look similar while lacking the required material system or compatibility.

  • Why choose it: four-color capability in a smaller 220 mm cubed build envelope.
  • What to watch: verify the IFS package and do not assume AD5M or AD5MP accessories will work with the AD5X.
  • Best buyer: someone printing relatively small multicolor parts who values a compact machine.

5. Snapmaker U1: best low-waste and toolchanger option

The Snapmaker U1 takes a fundamentally different approach. Its SnapSwap system uses four independent toolheads, and Snapmaker describes tool changes in about five seconds, automatic filament loading, multicolor and multimaterial printing, and a 270 × 270 × 270 mm build volume. The U1 FAQ confirms that up to four colors or materials can be used in one print.

A dedicated toolhead can avoid repeatedly forcing one filament through a shared nozzle whenever the print changes color. That is why the U1 belongs in a low-waste category rather than being compared only by its number of colors. Snapmaker claims up to 80% less waste than filament-changing systems; treat that as a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result that applies to every model, material, geometry, or slicer profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The U1 is also more compelling when the goal is multimaterial work rather than merely adding color. Separate toolheads can make combinations such as rigid and flexible materials or support materials more practical, subject to the manufacturer’s current compatibility guidance.

  • Why choose it: four independent toolheads, a 270 mm cubed build volume, and a design intended to reduce purge waste.
  • What to watch: the system has more hardware and a different operating workflow from a single-nozzle AMS, ACE Pro, or IFS printer; confirm the top-cover and enclosure configuration.
  • Best buyer: an advanced maker, designer, or small production user who values material separation and lower purge waste.

6. Original Prusa XL 5-Toolhead: best premium large-format multicolor printer

The Original Prusa XL is the specialist choice. Prusa describes it as a large-format desktop printer with up to five toolheads, a 360 × 360 × 360 mm build area, and a toolchanger designed for rapid material changes with little to no purge waste in suitable workflows.

Its large build volume is a major advantage for terrain, architectural models, large organizers, cosplay components, and production pieces that would need to be split on a smaller printer. The trade-off is physical size and price class. A larger machine also needs more operating space, and an optional enclosure changes that requirement again.

Prusa offers a separate upgrade path that lets buyers move from fewer toolheads to five. That can be useful if the initial project needs only two or three materials but future work may require more colors, soluble supports, or additional material separation. It also means the buyer should compare the cost and contents of the exact toolhead configuration rather than treating every XL listing as a five-toolhead printer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Why choose it: the largest build volume in this shortlist, up to five independent toolheads, and a workflow designed to minimize purge waste.
  • What to watch: it is not the default beginner pick; the machine is larger, more expensive, and more specialized than the A1 Combo or AD5X.
  • Best buyer: advanced makers, designers, small production workflows, and anyone prioritizing large parts and material separation over purchase price.

How multicolor 3D printers actually change colors

Single-nozzle filament changers

The A1 Combo, P1S Combo, Kobra 3 Combo, and AD5X use a material-management system that feeds different filaments to one printing nozzle. When the design changes color, the printer unloads one filament, loads another, and purges residual material before continuing.

Rank #3
Bambu Lab A1 Mini Combo, A1 Mini 3D Printer&AMS lite, Multi-Color Printing

Setup for your first print takes just 20 minutes thanks to its pre-assembled design. The 1-Clip quick swap nozzle allows for convenient maintenance and versatile printing options. Plus, enjoy a quiet printing environment with active motor noise cancellation, ensuring ≤48 dB noise levels.

This approach is comparatively compact and can be easier to sell as a complete consumer package. Its costs are purge material, added tool-change time, and the need to manage a purge tower or another waste-handling strategy. The exact waste depends on the number of changes, color order, materials, nozzle temperature, model geometry, and slicer settings.

Independent toolheads and toolchangers

The Snapmaker U1 and Original Prusa XL keep separate materials on separate toolheads. Instead of flushing every old color from one nozzle, the printer changes to the toolhead carrying the next material. That can substantially reduce purge waste and makes multimaterial combinations more practical.

Toolchangers are not automatically waste-free. They can still produce material waste during loading, priming, cleaning, failed changes, or support operations. Prusa’s little-to-no-waste description applies to suitable workflows, and Snapmaker’s percentage reduction is a manufacturer claim. Neither should be generalized into a guarantee for every print.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multicolor is not the same as full-color printing

These printers select from loaded filament colors. They do not generally mix arbitrary colors into continuous gradients the way an ink or resin color printer might. A model can contain multiple discrete colors, but the result depends on the available spools, the design’s color regions, the slicer, and the printer’s material-changing workflow.

What matters more than the advertised color count

1. How many materials are independently available?

A headline such as four, eight, or sixteen colors does not necessarily mean four, eight, or sixteen independent nozzles. A system may reach a higher count by linking material-management units to one nozzle, while a toolchanger may use several dedicated toolheads.

For example, Anycubic lists four- or eight-color support for the Kobra 3 Combo, while the Snapmaker U1 uses four independent toolheads. The Prusa XL can use up to five toolheads. Those are different capabilities even where the color counts look similar on a product page.

2. Purge waste and print time

If you are printing a small sign with a few color changes, purge waste may be acceptable. If you are producing repeated parts with many transitions, the waste can become a meaningful operating cost and cleanup task. A single-nozzle printer may still be the right choice for its lower complexity, but compare the material cost and print-time consequences rather than looking only at the number of colors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Build volume

Compact beds are sufficient for small figurines, labels, desk organizers, and many simple signs. Construction-oriented users may want more room for site models, terrain, building components, mockups, or jigs. The researched machines range from the Flashforge AD5X at 220 × 220 × 220 mm to the Bambu A1 at 256 × 256 × 256 mm, the Snapmaker U1 at 270 × 270 × 270 mm, and the Prusa XL at 360 × 360 × 360 mm.

More volume does not come free. A larger build area normally means a larger machine footprint, more clearance around the printer, and more room for spools, enclosures, doors, and maintenance access.

4. Material compatibility and drying

Do not choose solely by color capacity. Anycubic lists PLA, PETG, and TPU for the Kobra 3 while qualifying that TPU is not compatible with ACE Pro. Bambu Lab’s AMS documentation highlights drying and filament-status detection, and Snapmaker positions the U1 for combinations such as rigid, flexible, and support materials.

Before buying, verify the manufacturer’s current compatibility table for the exact material, spool format, nozzle, enclosure, and material-management configuration. A printer that handles multicolor PLA does not automatically handle every engineering filament, flexible filament, abrasive composite, or support material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Enclosure and workshop placement

An enclosed printer can be preferable in a workshop, classroom, or dusty environment, but enclosure status varies by model and bundle. The A1 is open. The P1S is the enclosed pick in this shortlist. The Kobra 3 Combo and AD5X configuration should be verified before purchase. The Snapmaker U1 has an enclosed-chamber design with top-cover configuration variations, while the Prusa XL offers an optional enclosure.

Also check room for spool loading, tubing, cable routing, door or lid movement, and routine maintenance. A printer that technically fits on a bench may not be practical if there is no clearance to change filament or remove a finished build.

Which printer makes sense for construction and workshop projects?

Multicolor printing is useful when color communicates information. A construction firm, designer, educator, or maker might use different colors to distinguish building systems in a scale model, mark phases in a site model, identify components in a mockup, or make labels and training aids easier to read.

For larger architectural models, terrain, and repeated parts, build volume may matter more than the maximum color count. The Prusa XL’s 360 mm cubed workspace is the strongest fit here, while the Snapmaker U1 offers a useful middle ground when material separation and reduced purge waste matter. For small desk-scale models and classroom demonstrations, the A1 Combo, AD5X, or Kobra 3 Combo may be more proportionate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color does not make a printed part structurally certified. For load-bearing, code-regulated, fire- or heat-exposed, or safety-critical applications, use a material and process approved by the responsible engineer or authority. Treat multicolor printing as a visualization and fabrication feature, not as proof of engineering performance.

A practical buying and setup checklist

  1. Define the job. Decide whether you need decorative color, color-coded information, multiple functional materials, soluble support, or simply a larger printer.
  2. Choose the architecture. Select a single-nozzle filament changer for a simpler, compact route, or a toolchanger when reduced purge waste and material separation justify additional hardware.
  3. Count the actual loaded materials. Determine whether a four- or eight-color claim comes from one linked material system or from independent toolheads.
  4. Confirm the bundle. Look for the exact inclusion of AMS lite, AMS 2 Pro, AMS Hub, ACE Pro, IFS, or toolheads. Do not assume a printer-only listing is a multicolor Combo.
  5. Check the material table. Confirm compatibility for PLA, PETG, TPU, support materials, abrasive filaments, spool dimensions, and the relevant nozzle or enclosure.
  6. Plan for moisture. Use the printer’s supported drying function where applicable, and store unused filament in airtight storage with appropriate desiccant. Moisture management is especially important when several spools remain loaded.
  7. Design for color changes. Use clear color boundaries and understand that a single-nozzle system may require a purge tower or another purge strategy.
  8. Test a small model first. Before committing a large architectural model or production batch, confirm color order, material loading, tool changes, supports, and the amount of waste produced by your own workflow.
  9. Verify software and firmware. Check current slicer and firmware compatibility for the exact printer and material-management system before relying on a color-painting or multimaterial workflow.
  10. Check the seller and policies. Verify regional warranty coverage, returns, shipping, seller identity, and the contents of the listing you will actually receive.

Accessories worth budgeting for

A multicolor printer is only as useful as its material workflow. Depending on the machine, practical additions may include PLA filament for multicolor 3D printers, PETG or TPU where supported, a filament dryer, airtight filament storage, replacement nozzles, build plates, PTFE tubing, and basic maintenance tools.

Buy accessories only after checking compatibility. A dryer, spool holder, tube, nozzle, or build plate that fits one printer or material system may not fit another. In particular, do not assume that TPU can use the same automatic path as PLA or PETG just because the printer lists all three materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Bambu Lab A1 Combo is the strongest beginner-oriented pick in this shortlist because the Combo includes the AMS lite, offers automatic calibration features, and has a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume. Make sure the listing is specifically the Combo; the standard A1 is not the multicolor configuration.

Which multicolor 3D printer is best for a beginner?

Not automatically. An eight-color claim may come from linking material-management units to one nozzle, while a four-color toolchanger may use four independent toolheads. Compare waste, material separation, build volume, compatibility, and bundle contents—not just the maximum color count.

Is an eight-color printer better than a four-color printer?

The Snapmaker U1 and Original Prusa XL are the low-waste choices here because they use independent toolheads. Snapmaker claims up to 80% less waste than filament-changing systems, and Prusa describes little to no purge waste in suitable workflows. Both are manufacturer claims and do not guarantee zero waste on every print.

Which multicolor 3D printers produce the least waste?

Compatibility depends on the exact printer and material-management system. Anycubic lists PLA, PETG, and TPU for the Kobra 3 but states that TPU is not compatible with ACE Pro. Always check the current manufacturer compatibility table for the spool, nozzle, enclosure, and loading path.

Can these printers print TPU and PETG in multiple colors?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They are useful for color-coded site models, architectural mockups, terrain, labels, jigs, and training aids. Multicolor capability does not certify a part for structural, load-bearing, fire-sensitive, code-regulated, or safety-critical use. Those applications require an engineer-approved material and process.

Are multicolor 3D printers suitable for construction parts?

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the Bambu Lab A1 Combo for the simplest entry into multicolor printing, the P1S Combo for an enclosed Bambu Lab setup, the Kobra 3 Combo or AD5X for value-oriented filament changing, the Snapmaker U1 for four-toolhead, lower-purge multimaterial work, and the Original Prusa XL when large parts and material separation justify a premium toolchanger.

Before ordering, confirm the exact bundle and material compatibility. Four, eight, or sixteen listed colors describe a loading system—not necessarily the number of independent nozzles—and manufacturer speed or waste claims should not be treated as universal real-world results.
