“Dry air fryer” is informal shorthand, not a regulated product category. It usually means a countertop air fryer that circulates hot air around food so you can brown and crisp it with little or no added oil. The best choice depends on your household, counter space, cooking style, materials priorities, and whether you need one basket or a multifunction oven.
No single model wins every test. Independent evaluations from Consumer Reports and RTINGS emphasize different priorities, so the shortlist below is organized by use case rather than by one universal ranking.

An air fryer combines a heating element with a fan. Hot air moves rapidly around food in a perforated basket or on a rack, exposing more surface area to heat than a conventional pan. Browning comes from hot, relatively dry air rather than submerging food in oil.

“Dry” does not mean the food contains no moisture or fat. Chicken wings release water and rendered fat; salmon contains natural oil; vegetables lose moisture as they cook. The term simply describes the cooking method and the small amount of added oil typically required.
Air frying can produce a lighter, drier crust than deep frying, but it is not an identical substitute. Texture, browning, and juiciness depend on the food, load, temperature, and basket design.
Is air frying healthier?
It can be a useful way to reduce added oil compared with deep frying, but the appliance does not make every recipe healthy.

- SHAKE NOTIFICATIONS: Get notified with an audible alarm halfway through cooking, reminding you to shake your food for the crispiest results possible
Where it can help
- Use measured oil instead of immersing food in oil.
- Make vegetables, fish, poultry, and homemade foods convenient on busy days.
- Reheat leftovers without heating a full-size oven for a small portion.
What it cannot change
- Frozen breaded foods remain processed, salty foods remain salty, and fatty foods still contain their calories.
- Portion size and the recipe usually matter more nutritionally than the appliance.
- Browning carbohydrate-rich foods can create acrylamide; avoid excessively dark or burnt surfaces rather than assuming air frying eliminates cooking byproducts.
- An air fryer does not make spoiled food safe. Handle raw ingredients correctly and verify doneness with a food thermometer and the appliance manual.
Best air fryers by use case
Best compact single basket: Ninja Air Fryer Pro XL AF181
RTINGS identifies the AF181 as a leading 6-quart-class model, highlighting its compact dimensions relative to capacity, stable temperature, and useful baking and dehydration behavior. It suits one to three people or a small family that wants strong airflow without a dual-basket footprint. The trade-off is sequential cooking when a main and side need different settings. See RTINGS’ 6-quart comparison.
Best for family meal timing: Ninja Foodi DZ550
RTINGS names the DZ550 its best overall air fryer in its 2026 roundup, citing a 10-quart total capacity and two independently controlled baskets. It is useful for a main and side, different temperatures, or separating meat and vegetarian foods. Two baskets do not equal one large uninterrupted cavity, however, and the wider footprint and extra parts increase cleaning demands. Consumer Reports lists the DZ550 among tested models but reaches a different overall assessment, illustrating why methodologies matter. Sources: RTINGS and Consumer Reports buying-guide data.
Best value candidate: Cosori TurboBlaze
Cosori describes the TurboBlaze as a 6-quart model with a DC motor, five fan speeds, ceramic coating, and dishwasher-safe parts. Its comparison material showed a $119.99 retail-price signal in August 2026. This is a sensible candidate for straightforward single-basket cooking, but Cosori’s speed and performance descriptions are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. - FROZEN TO CRISPY: Cook frozen foods in just minutes for an extra-crispy finish.
Best PFAS-conscious candidate: Cosori Iconic
Cosori states that the Iconic has ceramic-coated cooking surfaces free of PFAS and BPA, a stainless-steel structure, tempered glass, a 6.5-quart capacity, a 90–450°F range, dishwasher-safe parts, and a five-year limited warranty. These are manufacturer claims describing the stated cooking surfaces; they are not independent certification that the entire appliance is “non-toxic.” Sources: materials and specifications and product page.

Best mainstream alternative: Instant Vortex Plus
Consumer Reports includes Instant Vortex Plus models among its tested air fryers, and other roundups treat the line as a strong conventional option. Confirm the exact SKU before comparing capacity, window, controls, coating, warranty, or price: “Vortex Plus” refers to multiple versions. Sources include Consumer Reports and Food Network.
Best toaster-oven replacement: Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro
Breville lists 13 cooking functions, a 1-cubic-foot interior, compatibility with most 9-by-13-inch pans, four dehydrating trays, and capacity for a 14-pound turkey. Its U.S. product page listed $399.95; Breville’s range page also showed a $319.95 promotional signal. It is a strong consolidation choice for baking, toasting, roasting, broiling, reheating, and air frying, but it occupies substantially more counter space than a basket appliance. Single basket or dual basket?
Choose a single basket when
- You cook for one to three people.
- Counter and storage space are limited.
- You usually cook one food at a time.
- You want fewer parts and a lower likely purchase price.
A large printed quart number can still hide a narrow cooking floor. Tall baskets are not automatically better for spreading food in one layer.
Choose dual baskets when
- You regularly cook a main and side simultaneously.
- Foods need different temperatures or cooking times.
- You meal-prep or want to keep ingredients separate.
- Your counter can accommodate a wider appliance.
Sync and match functions coordinate finish times for convenience; they do not guarantee identical texture in both baskets. RTINGS recommends single-basket designs for space-constrained kitchens and dual-basket designs for simultaneous cooking or larger households: RTINGS recommendations.

| Consideration | Basket model | Toaster-oven style |
|---|---|---|
| Small portions | Usually faster preheating and concentrated airflow | May take longer to heat |
| Food shape | Best for fries, wings, nuggets, and reheating | Better for pizza, casseroles, trays, and tall foods |
| Versatility | Usually fewer functions | Often toasts, bakes, roasts, broils, reheats, and dehydrates |
| Space and cleaning | Smaller footprint and simpler cleanup | Larger cavity, more racks and surfaces to clean |
| Air-fry consistency | Often more concentrated around a small load | Can vary by rack position and food load |
How much capacity do you need?
Use these as starting points, not standards:
- 2–4 quarts: one person or small portions.
- 5–6.5 quarts: general-purpose range for couples and small families.
- 7–10 quarts: larger portions and meal prep.
- Dual basket: two foods at once, with each basket’s individual size still limiting.
- Toaster-oven format: baking pans, pizza, roasting, and tray cooking.
Measure usable floor area, not just total volume. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying data shows that measured usable capacity can differ materially from advertised capacity: Consumer Reports buying guide.

Materials, coatings, and PFAS terminology
- PTFE is a fluoropolymer used in many nonstick surfaces.
- PFAS is a broad chemical class; PFAS-free is a wider statement than PFOA-free.
- Ceramic-coated generally describes a coating system, not a solid ceramic chamber.
- Stainless steel may describe only the basket, only the exterior, or both.
- Glass can reduce reliance on coated food-contact surfaces but adds weight and breakage risk.
Ask exactly which food-contact parts a claim covers. Replace baskets or trays when coatings visibly peel, flake, warp, or otherwise deteriorate, following the manufacturer’s guidance. Avoid the blanket terms “chemical-free” and “non-toxic” unless a precise independent standard supports them.
Features worth paying for
High-value features
- Stable temperature control and even airflow.
- A broad cooking surface and effective grease separation.
- Readable controls and a shake or turn reminder.
- Removable parts whose dishwasher compatibility is stated in the manual.
- Replaceable baskets or crisper plates.
- Vent placement and cord length that suit your counter.
Useful but optional
- Viewing window and interior light.
- Temperature probe.
- App connectivity, guided recipes, presets, dehydration, and dual-zone synchronization.
Often overvalued
- Very high wattage without evidence of better temperature stability.
- Dozens of presets, voice control, or Wi-Fi for a manually usable appliance.
- Large quart claims that do not disclose usable cooking area.
- “Restaurant-quality” or “healthier” marketing without comparative testing.
How to cook with less oil and better texture
- Pat wet ingredients dry before seasoning.
- Apply oil as a measured coating when it improves browning; zero oil is not always the best texture.
- Leave space between pieces and cook in batches instead of stacking densely.
- Shake or turn food as directed by the recipe or manual.
- Preheat only when the manual or recipe calls for it.
- When adapting an oven recipe, begin checking early because a compact chamber may cook faster.
- Favor vegetables, fish, poultry, beans, and minimally processed foods; balance calorie-dense items with vegetables.
Cleaning and safety checklist
- Unplug and let the appliance cool before washing.
- Remove crumbs and grease from the basket, crisper plate, and interior.
- Inspect the heating element for buildup.
- Use non-abrasive tools on coated surfaces and avoid metal utensils when the manual prohibits them.
- Put only the explicitly approved removable parts in the dishwasher; repeated dishwasher use can affect coatings and finishes.
- Operate on a stable, heat-resistant surface with exhaust vents clear.
- Do not place the appliance directly under cabinets or block rear or side ventilation unless the manual permits it.
- Keep lightweight parchment or liners weighed down by food so they cannot reach the heating element.
- Use oven mitts for hot baskets and trays.
- Check cords, glass, baskets, and coatings for damage; stop using the unit if you see peeling, cracks, warping, or unusual smoke.
- Use a food thermometer for meat, poultry, and reheated leftovers rather than relying only on preset times.
Clearance, electrical requirements, maximum loads, temperature limits, and exact dishwasher instructions are model-specific. Follow the manual for the appliance you buy.
