Direct answer: The Bosch 800 Series SHP78CM5N is the best overall dishwasher for most U.S. households in 2026. Its 42 dBA operation, CrystalDry system, flexible racks, and balanced price make it the safest all-around recommendation. Miele is the premium choice, KitchenAid is best for loading flexibility, GE Profile focuses on dishwasher freshness, LG offers the strongest smart-feature mix, and Whirlpool is the budget-oriented option.

Scope: This comparison is for standard 24-inch built-in dishwashers sold in the United States. Prices, stock, rebates, model suffixes, installation requirements, and retailer services can change, so verify the exact model before ordering.

Our verdict: the Bosch 800 Series SHP78CM5N is the best default choice

For the typical U.S. household, the Bosch 800 Series SHP78CM5N offers the strongest balance of cleaning support, quiet operation, drying performance, rack flexibility, availability, and price. Bosch lists a 42 dBA sound rating, CrystalDry, PowerControl, PrecisionWash, EasyGlide racks, a flexible third rack, and Home Connect connectivity. Its listed price at the time of research was $1,499, but appliance pricing and promotions are volatile.

The biggest reason to choose this Bosch over a less expensive dishwasher is not simply the stainless-steel tub or the brand name. It is the combination of quiet operation and a drying system designed to handle difficult items, especially plastics. Bosch describes CrystalDry as a mineral-based drying process. That is different from AutoAir, a system Bosch uses on selected 500 Series models, so do not assume every Bosch with a similar appearance has the same drying hardware.

The SHP78CM5N is the best starting point if you have an open-plan kitchen, run mixed loads, dislike unloading wet plastic containers, or want a premium dishwasher without moving all the way into luxury pricing. It is not automatically the right purchase for every kitchen: verify the complete model suffix, cabinet opening, door and handle clearance, rack configuration, installation parts, and local service before buying.

If you are ready to compare live listings, the Bosch 800 Series dishwasher is the model family to start with. Confirm the exact SHP78CM5N suffix, seller, delivery terms, installation availability, and return policy rather than buying from a listing based only on a product photograph.

When the Miele G 7196 SCVi SF is worth the extra money

The Miele G 7196 SCVi SF AutoDos is the premium recommendation. It is aimed at buyers who care more about refined rack design, automatic detergent dosing, cleaning systems, and premium ownership support than about minimizing the initial purchase price. Miele lists 42 dB operation, AutoDos with PowerDisk detergent, AutoOpen drying, QuickIntenseWash, a 3D MultiFlex cutlery tray, Miele@home connectivity, and an integrated water softener. The current U.S. product page listed a $2,399 sale price at the time of research.

AutoDos automatically dispenses detergent from a PowerDisk. That can make daily operation more convenient and provides consistent dosing, but PowerDisks are proprietary consumables and should be included in the long-term ownership budget. Miele says its G 5000 and G 7000 series dishwashers and core components were tested for the equivalent of 20 years of use, based on 5,600 wash cycles. This is a manufacturer durability-test claim, not a promise that an individual dishwasher will operate for 20 years without a repair.

There is also useful, though geographically limited, service evidence behind the premium recommendation. Yale Appliance’s 2026 analysis covered 33,190 service calls in Boston, Cape Cod, and Southern New Hampshire. Miele recorded a 5.6% first-year service rate in that dataset, the lowest among the brands Yale tracked. Bosch, Benchmark, and Thermador formed the next group at approximately 7.7% to 8.1%. Those figures describe first-year service calls in one retailer’s service territory; they are not national failure rates, lifetime reliability probabilities, or a guarantee for your location.

Choose the Miele if you have hard water and will use its water-softening system correctly, want automatic detergent dosing, value the 3D MultiFlex tray, and have access to an authorized dealer and service provider. Miele says its products are sold through authorized retail partners rather than every national retailer. Confirm local installation and warranty support before committing to the premium price.

Best dishwasher by need

Best for loading flexibility: KitchenAid KDPM604KPS

The KitchenAid KDPM604KPS is the strongest alternative when rack arrangement matters more to you than absolute quietness. Its 360-degree Max Jets third rack is designed to spray water across items loaded on that rack, and KitchenAid and Lowe’s describe it as having space for additional glasses, mugs, and utensils. It also has fan-enabled ProDry, a self-cleaning filtration system, and a 44 dBA sound rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a practical choice for families that frequently wash a varied combination of plates, cups, utensils, and awkward small items. A well-designed third rack can free space below and reduce the need to hand-wash utensils. The trade-off is noise: 44 dBA is quiet for a dishwasher, but it is not as quiet as the 42 dBA Bosch, Miele, and LG models in this comparison.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying-guide data lists the KDPM604KPS with an overall score of 70. Current comparison coverage describes KitchenAid as a strong loading-flexibility or value competitor, while generally placing it behind Miele and Bosch on the most difficult cleaning loads. Availability and price can vary substantially by retailer.

Best for reducing dishwasher odor: GE Profile UltraFresh

GE Profile’s UltraFresh system targets the unpleasant odor or stagnant-water problem that concerns some households between wash cycles. GE describes three elements:

  • Drain: periodic draining and fresh-water circulation intended to reduce standing water.
  • Dry: continuous fresh-air intake to help the interior dry between cycles.
  • Defend: Microban treatment on selected touchpoints, such as handles, controls, rack handles, and filters.

GE says treated surfaces remain 99% cleaner than untreated surfaces. That is a manufacturer claim about treated touchpoints; it does not mean the entire interior is sterile or that the dishwasher never needs filter cleaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

UltraFresh makes the most sense for households that leave dishes in the machine between cycles, have experienced dishwasher odor, or are building a coordinated GE Profile appliance suite. Check the exact model number. Sound ratings, rack designs, drying systems, and the specific UltraFresh features differ across the GE Profile range. The system is also not a substitute for scraping heavy food soil, using the correct detergent and rinse aid, cleaning the filter, and allowing the dishwasher to complete its drying process.

Best feature-rich smart alternative: LG LDTH7972S

The LG LDTH7972S is a strong choice for smart-home users and shoppers who prioritize steam, a fast cycle, and a broad feature set. LG lists TrueSteam, QuadWash Pro, Dynamic Heat Dry, Wi-Fi, a height-adjustable third rack, 15-place-setting capacity, and a 42 dBA sound rating. It also offers a one-hour wash-and-dry cycle.

LG’s specification sheet lists 10 cycles, eight options, 238 kWh per year, a 2.9 water factor, and ENERGY STAR qualification for this model. An ENERGY STAR Most Efficient recognition was documented for the model’s 2023 launch, but that historical recognition should not be treated as proof of the current certification status of every listing. Check the current EnergyGuide label and certification for the exact dishwasher you purchase.

LG is the better fit than Bosch if an app, steam, and a fast wash-and-dry option are central to your decision. It is less suitable if you are selecting primarily on long-term service evidence, because the available comparison and regional service data in this research provide stronger support for Miele and Bosch.

Best basic-value path: Whirlpool WDT730HAMZ

The Whirlpool WDT730HAMZ provides the core built-in dishwasher format at a lower price point than the premium recommendations. It includes a third rack, an adjustable second rack, a triple-filtration wash system, and a listed capacity of 14 place settings for this model family.

This is a reasonable value route if your priority is replacing an aging dishwasher without paying for advanced drying, app connectivity, premium rack hardware, or the quietest available operation. It is not best framed as a performance equivalent to the Bosch 800 or Miele G 7196. Expect fewer premium refinements, and compare the exact sound rating, stainless-steel-tub construction, drying method, rack layout, and warranty.

Whirlpool’s documentation also identifies compatible installation accessories, replacement parts, dishwasher cleaner, and water-supply kits. Before ordering, check whether the installation requires a new water line, power cord, drain extension, mounting hardware, or an air-gap component under local code.

Cleaning performance: what the current evidence supports

Miele and Bosch have the strongest current editorial support for difficult-load cleaning in this group. Yale Appliance’s 2026 comparison describes Miele as strongest for clean dishes and Bosch as strongest for quiet operation and drying. Yale’s service-data analysis also places Miele and Bosch near the top of the brands it tracked.

That does not establish a universal laboratory ranking. Cleaning depends on spray-arm coverage, filter condition, detergent, water temperature, rinse aid, water hardness, cycle selection, and loading. A cheaper dishwasher loaded correctly can outperform a premium dishwasher with blocked spray arms or tightly nested bowls.

For any model, scrape rather than fully pre-rinse most dishes unless the manufacturer specifically directs otherwise. Keep spray-arm openings clear, avoid nesting spoons and bowls, place heavily soiled cookware where the main jets can reach it, and use a cycle appropriate to the soil level. The third rack is useful only when it does not block the upper spray arm or force taller items into poor positions below.

Drying systems are not interchangeable

A stainless-steel tub does not by itself guarantee dry dishes. These models use materially different approaches:

Model or system Drying approach What it means in practice
Bosch 800 CrystalDry A mineral-based process Bosch positions as an improvement for drying, particularly plastics.
Miele G 7196 AutoOpen drying The door opens automatically at the end of the cycle to help release moist air.
KitchenAid KDPM604KPS Fan-enabled ProDry Uses assisted drying; performance varies with the cycle, load, rinse aid, and plastic items.
LG LDTH7972S Dynamic Heat Dry Pairs with LG’s wash-and-dry programs, including the listed one-hour cycle.
GE Profile UltraFresh Fresh-air intake as part of UltraFresh Designed to improve freshness and interior drying between cycles; exact implementation varies by model.

Plastic containers remain harder to dry than glass and ceramic because they retain less heat and shed water differently. Results also change with cycle selection, the shape and density of the load, rinse-aid use, and local water conditions. If dry plastics are a major priority, focus on the actual drying system and current model documentation rather than assuming all premium dishwashers perform alike.

  • TurboDry for Dry Dishes: A built-in fan pulls moisture and warm air out of the dishwasher while a heating element boosts drying power. Even plastics come out dry and spot-free. Ditch the dish towel
  • Whisper-Quiet Wash + Smart Features: This elite dishwasher runs at just 42 dBA with a QuietWash option for a whisper quiet cycle. LED floor light tells you when it's running. Hidden touch controls and a sleek bar handle offer a streamlined look

Noise: 42 dBA versus 44 dBA is useful, but not the whole story

The Bosch 800, Miele G 7196, and LG LDTH7972S are listed at approximately 42 dBA, while the KitchenAid KDPM604KPS is listed at 44 dBA. Lower numbers generally indicate quieter operation, which matters in an open-plan kitchen or when the dishwasher runs overnight.

Compare ratings only when they were measured under comparable manufacturer and regulatory conventions. Perceived sound also changes with cabinet construction, flooring, installation quality, the cycle phase, pump operation, and the contents of the load. A poorly secured dishwasher can sound louder than its specification suggests. Do not select on dBA alone, but use it as a meaningful tie-breaker between otherwise similar models.

Reliability: how to interpret the available service data

Reliability is the most easily overstated part of a dishwasher ranking. The most useful current field evidence in this research comes from Yale Appliance’s 2026 service-call analysis:

  • Miele: 5.6% first-year service rate.
  • Bosch, Benchmark, and Thermador: approximately 7.7% to 8.1%.
  • KitchenAid: approximately 8.2%.
  • GE and GE Profile: approximately 8.9% to 10.3%.

The analysis covered 33,190 service calls in Boston, Cape Cod, and Southern New Hampshire. It is valuable because it reflects actual service activity, but it is not a national census and does not measure lifetime failure probability. Regional water conditions, installer quality, product mix, service practices, and the brands sold by that retailer can all affect the result. Use it as one input alongside warranty terms, local service coverage, product complexity, and price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a premium dishwasher, local authorized service may matter more than a small difference in a published ranking. Confirm who will diagnose and repair the appliance in your area, whether labor is covered, and whether the retailer or manufacturer handles the service claim.

Efficiency: check the exact yellow EnergyGuide label

ENERGY STAR’s current residential dishwasher criteria, effective July 19, 2023, require standard models to use no more than 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle. ENERGY STAR says certified dishwashers are, on average, 20% more energy efficient and 30% more water efficient than standard models.

Those program thresholds are useful for screening, but the exact yellow EnergyGuide label is the better comparison tool for two models you are actually considering. It reflects the model’s estimated annual energy use and operating cost assumptions. LG’s LDTH7972S specification sheet lists 238 kWh per year and a 2.9 water factor, but do not transfer those numbers to other LG models or assume a retailer’s listing is current without checking the model-specific label.

Dishwashers also use less water than hand-washing in many normal household situations, particularly when the machine is run with full loads. A longer cycle does not necessarily mean wasteful operation; modern efficiency programs often trade time for lower water and energy consumption.

Fit and installation: measure before choosing a model

Most dishwashers in this comparison are standard 24-inch built-in units, but “24-inch” is not an installation measurement. You need the cabinet opening’s actual width, minimum and maximum height, depth, door clearance, and clearance to adjacent cabinets or islands.

Published dimensions illustrate why model-level checking matters:

  • Bosch SHP78CM5N: approximately 23 9/16 inches wide and 23 3/4 inches deep.
  • Miele G 7196: approximately 23 9/16 inches wide, adjustable from 33 11/16 to 36 1/4 inches high, and 22 7/16 inches deep.
  • LG LDTH7972S: approximately 23 3/4 inches wide, with a 33 5/8-inch minimum height and 24 5/8-inch depth.

These dimensions do not replace the installation guide. Account for the floor beneath the dishwasher, countertop height, insulation, leveling feet, water-line routing, drain-hose routing, electrical connection, and the depth of the door or handle when open. A replacement unit may fit the rough opening but still interfere with a cabinet, island, baseboard, or adjacent appliance.

Also determine the configuration before purchase:

  • Top-control versus front-control: top controls provide a cleaner appearance but may be harder to see during operation.
  • Finished stainless steel versus panel-ready: panel-ready models require a correctly sized cabinet panel and compatible hardware.
  • Electrical connection: confirm whether the dishwasher uses a power cord or direct wiring and follow local electrical code.
  • Water supply: verify the required line, shutoff, fittings, and water temperature.
  • Drainage: check high-loop or air-gap requirements and whether the existing drain hose reaches.
  • Mounting: confirm the supplied or required brackets work with your countertop and cabinet construction.

If you are replacing an existing unit, a dishwasher installation kit can be useful, but compatibility is not universal. Match the kit to the selected dishwasher, connection type, cabinet layout, and local code. Some installations should be handled by a qualified appliance installer or plumber, especially when electrical work, difficult drain routing, water damage, stone countertops, or code-specific air-gap requirements are involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hard water, detergent, and maintenance

Hard water can leave spots, scale, and mineral deposits and can reduce the apparent performance of any dishwasher. The Miele G 7196 includes a water softener, which is a meaningful advantage for households with hard water that can install and set it up correctly. Other models may require appropriate detergent, rinse aid, household water treatment, or more frequent descaling according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Basic maintenance remains necessary even on models with self-cleaning filtration or hygiene features:

  1. Inspect and clean the filter at the interval specified in the manual, or sooner if food debris remains.
  2. Check spray arms for blocked holes and remove debris carefully.
  3. Keep the door gasket and detergent-dispenser area free of buildup.
  4. Use rinse aid if recommended for the model and your water conditions.
  5. Run a dishwasher-cleaning cycle or cleaner product as directed by the manufacturer.
  6. Leave the door slightly open after a cycle if the manual and kitchen layout allow it, particularly if the interior remains damp.
  7. Do not mix incompatible detergents or use products not approved for the dishwasher.

For routine upkeep, dishwasher maintenance supplies such as compatible cleaner tablets and rinse aid can help, but they do not replace filter cleaning or correct loading. Follow the product instructions and the dishwasher manual; detergent and rinse-aid compatibility varies by brand and model.

How to choose among the six recommendations

  1. Start with the opening. Measure width, height, depth, flooring, and door clearance before comparing features.
  2. Decide whether drying plastics is a priority. If yes, give particular attention to Bosch CrystalDry and compare the drying system on every alternative.
  3. Choose your loading style. KitchenAid is compelling if its third rack and Max Jets layout match your everyday utensils, mugs, and small items. A third rack is not automatically useful if it reduces clearance for your normal plates or cookware.
  4. Consider water hardness. Miele’s integrated softener may justify its premium position in a hard-water home, provided you are prepared to configure and maintain it.
  5. Set a noise threshold. For an open kitchen, prioritize approximately 42 dBA models, but also insist on careful installation and cabinet fit.
  6. Separate must-have features from novelty features. LG’s Wi-Fi, TrueSteam, and fast wash-and-dry cycle are valuable if you will use them. Otherwise, they should not outweigh cleaning, drying, fit, service, or price.
  7. Confirm the exact model suffix. Small suffix changes can alter the handle, finish, rack, water-softener configuration, panel-readiness, sound rating, and drying system.
  8. Price the complete installation. Include delivery, haul-away, installation labor, water line, power cord, drain components, mounting hardware, sales tax, and any countertop or cabinet modifications.
  9. Check service before purchase. Confirm warranty coverage, authorized service availability, and the process for obtaining parts and repairs.
  10. Recheck live details immediately before ordering. Prices, rebates, inventory, seller policies, installation slots, and returns can change between research and purchase.

Which dishwasher should you buy?

  • Buy the Bosch 800 Series SHP78CM5N if you want the best all-around balance of quietness, drying, cleaning support, and mainstream availability.
  • Buy the Miele G 7196 SCVi SF if premium rack design, AutoDos, a water softener, and premium ownership support justify the price and PowerDisk cost.
  • Buy the KitchenAid KDPM604KPS if loading flexibility and its third-rack layout matter more than achieving the lowest sound rating.
  • Choose a GE Profile UltraFresh model if between-cycle odor and interior freshness are your primary concerns, after confirming the exact feature set.
  • Choose the LG LDTH7972S if Wi-Fi, steam, and a fast wash-and-dry cycle are central to your buying decision.
  • Choose the Whirlpool WDT730HAMZ or a similar Whirlpool model if your budget is limited and you want a standard built-in dishwasher with a third rack.

There is no universal winner independent of fit and installation. A dishwasher that fits the opening, has local service, matches your loading habits, and can be installed correctly is a better purchase than a theoretically superior model that cannot be supported in your kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best dishwasher overall in 2026?

For most U.S. households, the Bosch 800 Series SHP78CM5N is the best default choice. It combines a 42 dBA rating, CrystalDry, flexible racks, strong current cleaning and service-data support, and broad mainstream availability. The best choice changes if you prioritize Miele’s AutoDos and water softener, KitchenAid’s loading layout, GE Profile’s UltraFresh system, LG’s smart features, or Whirlpool’s lower price.

Which dishwasher has the best drying system for plastics?

Bosch 800’s CrystalDry uses a mineral-based process that Bosch positions as especially useful for difficult-to-dry items such as plastics. Miele uses AutoOpen drying, KitchenAid uses fan-enabled ProDry, and LG uses Dynamic Heat Dry. Actual results depend on the cycle, load, rinse aid, plastic type, and water conditions.

Which recommended dishwasher is the quietest?

The Bosch 800 Series SHP78CM5N, Miele G 7196 SCVi SF, and LG LDTH7972S are listed at approximately 42 dBA. KitchenAid’s KDPM604KPS is listed at 44 dBA. Installation quality, cabinetry, flooring, cycle phase, and the load also affect perceived noise.

What is the best dishwasher for hard water?

Miele is the strongest premium option for hard-water households because the G 7196 includes a water softener. It must be configured and maintained correctly, and buyers should still use appropriate detergent and rinse aid according to Miele’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will any 24-inch dishwasher fit my existing opening?

A 24-inch label usually refers to the nominal category, not the exact cabinet-opening requirement. Measure width, minimum and maximum height, depth, flooring, door clearance, adjacent cabinets, and handle projection. Also check electrical, water-supply, drain, mounting, and panel requirements for the exact model.

How reliable are the recommended dishwasher brands?

Yale Appliance’s 2026 regional service-call analysis found a 5.6% first-year service rate for Miele, approximately 7.7% to 8.1% for Bosch, Benchmark, and Thermador, 8.2% for KitchenAid, and approximately 8.9% to 10.3% for GE and GE Profile. The dataset covered Boston, Cape Cod, and Southern New Hampshire, so it should not be treated as a national failure-rate ranking.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Bosch 800 Series SHP78CM5N is the best default recommendation for most U.S. households. Move up to the Miele G 7196 SCVi SF for premium features and hard-water support, choose KitchenAid for loading flexibility, GE Profile for between-cycle freshness, LG for smart features and speed, or Whirlpool for a simpler value-focused installation. Verify dimensions, exact suffix, EnergyGuide data, installation parts, warranty, and local service before ordering.
